live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm matt keller in for katie ma much rzulo, here's your accuweather forecast. >> we have fog in the north bay around santa rosa and the central coast and the southwest wind is picking up towards the delta, making for a mild to cool afternoon. here's a look from our tower cam. we can see the fog drifting by, keeping san francisco cool today. 51 by the delta with the southwest wind up to 32 miles per hour. so around the bay today, seasonal readings, but that's not going to last. temperatures from the upper 50s to the low 60s at the coast. so quite cool here. around the bay, mid and upper 60s, inland low to mid 70s,

we'll keep it status quo for another day before we bring on the warmth and you'll have to dig out the umbrellas perhaps into next week. matt? thank you, lisa. breaking news, a major earth quake has hit the south pacific nation of papau, new guinea, a 7.5-magnitude quake. no reports of damage, but a tsunami warning has been issued for papau new guinea and the sal mon islands. we'll continue to follow the breaking news here on abc7 news and also on twitter at abc7 newsbay area. a developing news, a woman has life-threatening injuries after a car drove into a bus shelter in san francisco. it happened in the area of mission street and silver avenue around 9:30 last night. police say a car driving northbound on mission street jumped the curb and hit a pole as well as a woman at the bus stop. >> the accident is under investigation, we're looking into impairment and what we do know is she's a 42-year-old san

francisco resident. and the driver is also a san francisco resident. in his 40s. >> police say they are talking to witnesses and looking at surveillance video to figure out exactly what caused this crash. developing news in san jose, where a chp officer is recovering from injuries after being hit by a car. it happened on 101 near mckee road just before 11:00 last night. the officer was injured in his leg. no word yet if this was a hit-and-run. now to the latest on the ferry disaster in south korea. the confirmed death toll is 32, with about 270 others, mostly teenagers, still missing. the captain, who abandoned ship is now under arrest. we're learning more about the final hours of the voyage and who was steering the ship. abc's gloria rivera has the latest. >> reporter: this morning for the first time nurks details on what happened inside the ship's bridge during the ferry's final two hours. a shocking revelation.

in charges by south korean senior prosecutor, yang jun jin that the 25-year-old third mate was at the helm for the very first time, steering the ship through clusters of islands, known as a tricky, treacherous area with rough currents. the captain, arrested on suspicion of negligence and abandoning people in need said he was in his bedroom at the time the accident happened. at least two other crew also in custody. search-and-rescue teams are dealing with rough seas and dwindling time. we're on the dock with so many of the divers getting ready to get out there and they hope to get in the water. they say some of them yesterday they were not even able to do any dives at all because of weather conditions. it is the beginning of day four. they say today should be better. every hour that passes bringing more heartache and deepening fear for awaiting families. this shelter is also a vigil where they watched for news. the worst kind of news came when it was confirmed a diver spotted three bodies in the ship.

but couldn't get them out. the search-and-rescue effort continues, focusing on the crowded cafeteria, where it is feared so many were trapped. with so many relatives so desperate for this search to be ongoing, the coast guard tells us they plan on lighting 880 powerful flares to light up the sky, so their search can go on. gloria rivera, abc news, island, south korea. people gathered at a clutch for a good friday sermon. one pastor told us boat trips had are common at the south korean schools, so it had a strong emotional impact on people from there. >> the videos are really shocking it became a power to unify members in the church. >> one person from a south sfo congregation said a family friend still missing. breaking news out of san francisco, there's been a

shooting following a police pursuit. authorities say a robbery occurred in the area of balboa street. at some point it's believed that the suspects fired a weapon. police pursued the suspect and at that pursuit ended in a crash at 20th avenue and lincoln. one officer take ton the hospital with injuries, not considered to be life-threatening. two people take noon custody. we'll continue to follow that here on abc7 news and also online at twitter. could be a month before we learn what caused the death of an oakland woman at the coachella music festival. a 24-year-old woman collapsed a at a taxi area and died at the hospital. a riverside coroner is not ruling out a drug or alcohol overdose, he'll run tests to determine the exact cause that could take up to four weeks, the festival kicked off the second weekend yesterday. >> i'm sure people this weekend are going to do it again and i hope it doesn't happen. >> it's so easy to get like excited about like you know, the party, the music and then anyone can just offer you anything and

just you know, go with the flow and you don't know about the consequences. >> coachella's promotors say they're saddened by the death, they call it unfortunately, but isolated. street in piedmont covered in dirt following a landslide is back open this morning. sky 7 hd shows what was a resident's yard, which slipped down and spread across maraga avenue it buried much of the road at 11:00 yesterday morning. city crews spent the day clearing the mess and pg & e took over, cutting limbs. the city said the landslide was caused when a one-inch pipe in the homeowner's irrigation system broke. >> it's under pressure and if it runs all night and people aren't aware of it, you have concentrated flow that's coming down a steep slope and all that concentrated flow basically makes the soils flow like a liquid. >> the soil engineer held restabilized the hillside, the homeownermy have to pay for the clean-up costs. see's candy in pleasant hill could be closed this weekend

after a car smashed into the building yesterday. police say two cars collided, sending one crashing through the front door of the busy candy shop. 20 people were inside at the time. both drivers and two other people suffered minor injuries, no word on when repairs will be completed so the store can reopen. one of san francisco's newest millionaires is not the inventor of a clever new start-up, he's a mechanic and he's cashed in on the city's soaring real estate market. here's abc7 news reporter sergio quintena on his good fortune. >> jesse henry's dad was a mechanic so he followed in his footsteps when he opened this garage and followed his dad's advice. >> he said if you get something, you got to buy it, if you're going to keep it the landlords, whenever he had a business, he had to move the shop here and there. >> bought the building ten years ago and just cashed in on san francisco's white-hot real estate market. >> i sold this for almost $9 million. >> a big building smack-dab in the middle of a mission district, a neighborhood that's seen plenty of change in the

last two years. the price of his property pales in comparison to what's considered the most valuable commercial real estate lot in the city. right here, third street and townsend. >> how much do you think it's selling for? >> the mcdonald's lot? >> yeah. >> let's say $2 million. >> higher. >> $5 million. >> $17 million. >> smart investors. >> no official offer has been made for the lot just yet and mcdonald's still has a lease here until 2017. back in the mission, jesse henry understands that his sale means more change in this neighborhood. >> i bought this building, and that's the big difference between me and the 100 other guys out there renting right now. >> in san francisco, sergio quinn tanna, abc7 news. san francisco police are looking for two men who tried to rob a dog own aernd ended up stap stabbing his pit bull to death. yesterday morning a man was walking his dog. two men approached, one with a knife.

they grabbed the dog but ran off without it after arguing with the owner. >> getting pups, purchasing, whatever else it is, if they want to fight the dogs or anything else, they're looking for dogs that have not been sterilized. this dog's owner, his guardian, just lost his best friend. >> it turns out the robbers stabbed the dog, he did not survive. the owner was not injured. new details concerning thursday night's b.a.r.t. train derailment in concord. b.a.r.t. says a an operator tried to move a train without approval. no passengers were on board at the time. the second time in two months a b.a.r.t. train has derailed in contra costa county. b.a.r.t.'s new cars are causing controversy. not over the style but the color of the seats on the new trains. they're the colors of the seattle seahawks. 49er fans are of course not pleased. one fan has even started a change.org petition asking b.a.r.t. to reconsider the colors of the new seats.

to support healthy eyes and packed with key nutrients to support your heart and brain, too. centrum silver. for the most amazing parts of you. >> announcer: this is abc7 news. this morning los angeles police have a man in custody, who they say walked into the "l.a. times" building and threatened to start shooting. a woman called police, saying a co-worker was depressed and reportedly showed her a bag of bullets. the "times" says the man is not a employee, but works for a call center which rents office space in the building. police say no weapons were recovered. officers did not have far to go to get to that scene -- lapd headquarters is right across from the "times" building. an emotional family reunion for 7-year-old twins who fought off a carjacker with nothing but a toy snake. abc7 news reporter ron claiborne has their story.

okay, you're okay. >> fighting back has worked before, this philadelphia youngster escaped by biting the man who snatched her and now the quick-thinking texas twins who had the kraej and creativity to fight back with the only weapon they have and police say they've identified a person of interest in the case. ron claiborne, abc news, new york. talking about lucking out, surveillance cameras captured this video of a woman who barely escaped when a truck crashed into a grocery store in chicago yesterday afternoon. she was buying lottery tickets from a vending machine when a ford pick-up hit two other vehicles and plowed into the front of the store. woman was pinned against the wall, but her injuries are not serious. this morning, a resupply cargo carrier to the international space center called the dragon, is in orbit. >> and liftoff of the falcon 9 rocket and dragon. spacex3 is under way. >> the mission is nearly five weeks late. it was plagued by contamination

concerns. dragon is bringing food supplies, a new space suit, equipment and a let tus growing experiment to the international space station. it should dock at the station tomorrow morning. the dragon is also carrying a unique small satellite, designed at nasa ames research center in silicon valley. it's a tiny satellite, the size of a postage stamp called sprites. this animation shows how the cube sat will spin, launching the sprites into orbit. the model for the cube sat went through three major design changes. >> we would come up with an idea, we would look at you know, mathematical mathematically, if it was possible. bun but then we would 3-d print it and there's a lot of 3-d printing that goes on in the space shop. we use the 3-d printers to keep printing successive models until we got it right. >> this is the first kick-started satellite project. the aim to reduce the cost of space flight and allow people to customize their own satellites. if you ever buy jewelry from the tv shopping channels, you'll

however that didn't happen. instead, jim's bond tv channel suddenly went off the air. that's when richard contacted 7 on your side. we spoke with jim's bond owner, maliq akbar, he tells me his business run into problems and his wife became very ill. but promised richard would get his ring and sure enough, weeks later, it finally arrived. a big relief, except for one problem -- >> it's a beautiful ring. but it doesn't fit. >> the ring was too small. 7 on your side contacted the company again, and akbar sent richard $70 to get the ring resized, plus this gift of a single red garnet. akbar said, we have thousands of very satisfied customers, and normally, things go smoothly. because i was unable to work when my wife became ill, mr. williams' ring was mistakenly returned to the supplier. it was then shipped back and i have now sent it to mr. williams. i have also sent him a valuable

the view from our live cameras. and the fog will bank up along the coastline again. the san mateo coast and we'll have a strong westerly wind. so it will be cool and you can see higher elevation winds blowing around the camera on top of mount tam and some scattered clouds, it's 50 in the city. 54 in oakland. good morning, san jose, 52 for you in gilroy, checking in at 51 and down at the beach in santa cruz, temperatures upper 60s, with partly cloudy skies, 48 in petaluma and fog in santa rosa. that has just recently formed. but as we look at emeryville, you can see the clouds scattering out here, making for a nice start to your morning. so cool to mild today, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. it will include the 80s tomorrow for our east bay valleys and wipe out the 50s at the coast so we're warming up the coastline tomorrow. chance of showers just enough 0 get the ground wet perhaps monday night and tuesday, but not everyone will see the showers. there's another opportunity, though, for rain, perhaps into

next weekend. but we'll look for a little change today, as the front sits offshore. tomorrow we're behind it, and the high pressure builds in temporarily and that gives us the warm-up, it's a one-day event and with it we'll be looking at a high surf advisory from 5:00 tomorrow, through 5:00 monday morning. the westerly swells go up significantly from where they are right now. so from the sonoma coast down through month erey bay, it includes montera and ocean beach. dangerous conditions tomorrow, but we're looking at a whole lot of sunshine in between. in fact, with the cloudy skies on monday, temperatures will be held down. they'll got other direction, you can see the showers around the bay, from chico to the northern sacramento valley and by monday night, we're looking at just a little bit of isolated shower activity. it will be much cooler, the brie wi breeze will kick up. 69 santa cruz, menlo park about

the same with upper 60s san mateo in san francisco today, a lot like yesterday, 64. seasonal and in the north bay, temperatures range from just 58, bodega bay, you head up towards ukiah, it will be 76 there, 77 in cloverdale, sonoma, 72. near east bay, 66 in berkeley and by the afternoon you'll warm through the 60s to 69 union city and castro valley. fremont, 68. heading inland, we'll be back to the low to mid 70s today. nice afternoon in concord and 73. pleasanton, about the same and accuweather forecast shows upper 70s around the bay, mid 80s for easter sunday, a slight chance of a shower, monday night into tuesday. but that will be the coolest day. breezy winds, and just you know i wouldn't even turn off your sprinklers. we're not talking about much rain at all, we recover by the middle of next week. >> we can use every drop we can

tam. here is where the camera is situated. so you can see the camera shaking. and that fog pushing into san francisco. so we're looking at a cool start in the low to mid 50s across the bay in oakland and today with the strong onshore push, temperatures are just going to be in the 50s along the san mateo coast. so we should get some sunshine, point reyes, 60s into oakland. you have to go far north to get the 70s, but in the santa clara valley we'll have a few 70s. 80s confined to the sacramento valley. they'll push closer tomorrow for easter sunday. i'll detail the forecast for you coming up. matt? >> thank you, lisa. today pope francis will take part in an easter vigil in st. peter's basilica. yesterday he presided over good friday mass. he began the service by prostating himself on the floor in front of the altar and then led a torch-lit procession marking way of the cross. tens of thousands of followers lined the streets holding prayer

has been issued for new guinea and the solomon islands. speaking of earthquakes, officials say mexico city had 71 seconds of warning before yesterday's 7.2 earthquake. because of the early quake warning system. yesterday's temblor is one of several earthquakes to hit our side of the pacific rim in the past two weeks. it hit just off the northern california coast on march 10, an 8.2 quake off chile on april 2nd. and now a 7.2 near acapulco. what's going on here? abc7 news reporter david lui reports from the usgs headquarters in menlo park. >> the earthquake centered in acapulco was strong enough to cause the wall of a billing to collapse in mexico city. the latest reminder that the pacific is the most seismically active region in the world. the ring of fire stretches 25,000 fire from the south pacific up to japan, across to

north america and swinging past south america. it encompasses densely populated coastal areas. however, earthquake sterts at usgs say the faults along the mexican coast have been building up stress, but the temblors have not been extraordinary. >> these have not been very large earthquakes, they've been a range of sizes. and the range of sizes and occurrences we've seen are what we would typically see over sort of this time span with variable, variations in activity that is pretty common. >> however, the pattern of earthquakes can be disturbing, we've seen the destruction in japan in 2011. enter have been two in chile, magnitude 8.2 and 6.7 and a 5.1 earthquake in orange county last month. and the bay area sits on the ring of fire, too. the 1989 loma prieta earthquake set fires, damaged the bay bridge and created deep cracks in roads. >> where the faults have more movement, we would expect more frequent large events on those faults. and so that's timically our plate boundaries such as the

pacific ring of fire. >> technology is making strides in predicting earthquakes. >> including mexico city. >> and earthquake warning system activated during a news conference cal tech and pasadena. a similar system gave mexico residents enough time to take shelter. >> it gave the population of mexico city a more than 70 seconds warning before the strong shaking arrived. and it gave acapulco about 27 seconds warning. >> in menlo park, david lui, abc7 news. what began with the best of intentions has turned in a fight between a homeowner with chickens and marin county neighborhood association with rules against them. abc7 news reporter wayne friedman picks up the story in camp woodlands. >> before the chicken, before the egg even, there was a coop. in kent woodlands, the question is which will be there longer? the birds or the $13,000 home. >> we wanted to build a nice coop. we didn't want to have a problem. >> now andy, his wife tracy and most important, their daughter

rainy, who has four chickens do have a problem. >> the one that is laying the egg is izzy. the black one is izzy. this one is felipe and this one is colette. >> the their neighborhood association has rules against barnyard pets. this board member says he's the designated chicken enforcers. >> they attract coyotes, they attract rodents, they make noise and the people didn't wish to have it. >> we tried really hard from the beginning to work with the community and figure out a good solution. and they've stuck to their guns that chickens are not common pets. >> they really love me and i love them. and they -- really are my pets. >> as chicken coops go, it's a megamansion. the neighborhood association unimpressed, however. it worries about barnyard pet proliferation. >> you allow chickens, you have goats.

cooler marine air across the bay today. so you'll feel it you may need the jacket from time to time. it will be breezy and then tomorrow, things really switch around. 54 half moon bay, san francisco, good morning to you, 51 at redwood city and a little sun in santa cruz, it will be a more of a beach day tomorrow with numbers in the 70s here. mid 60s up towards point reyes, but today it's just in the 50s in many bay area coastlines, 52 concord. livermore, 352 and the clouds have scattered out of emeryville and oakland, it will be a cool afternoon, on the mild side towards later on in the day but the winds will keep it feeling spring-like. so warming up for easter and a chachbs showers coming in monday night into tuesday. not everyone will see that. in fact it's looking weaker and weaker. but we're looking at cooler temperatures. so the satellite and radar shows that we're clear, looking at weak high pressure today and then it builds in tomorrow. starting out sunnier and

temperatures climbing through the 70s to make it to the mid 80s and the coastline, the onshore flow backs off. at the same time our surf kicks up. so the westerly swell, 13-15 feet tomorrow. today no problems really. but the risk of rip currents and sneaker waves tomorrow, especially along ocean beach, always a particularly dangerous place. livermore for the week ahead, a pleasant day today, in the 70s. look ha happens tomorrow, it bumps to the low 80s, dropping it off on monday with the clouds. only in the 60s for livermore on tuesday. and then look what happens by the middle of the week, back to average temperatures, a little bit above average. it doesn't look like you'll see any rain this week we can hold out our hopes for perhaps next weekend when things are looking like we could see a little bit of unsettled weather. 72 in los angeles today. nothing but sun there. 65 in the northern sierra with monterey coming in at 60. temperatures in the mid 60s san

last september's 3,000-acre fire. >> i'm surprised it looks a lot better than i thought it would be. i remember seeing the flames from 580, 680, walls of fire up here. i thought it would be nothing up here, i thought it would be complete devastation. >> since the fire it was really black. and now everything is coming back up. the flowers are beautiful. it's gorgeous up here. >> that's not to say that all has returned to its lush past. amid the bright poppies and daisies, there's still plenty that is charred. >> we didn't have the rainfall that we expected. we did get some good recovery. but we expected it to be a lot better. >> it will return, but fire is nature's way of cleaning house. with an eye toward what will be new and fresh when the time is right. >> there's some real bleak, almost lunar landscapes where things are quite burned off. but you can also see stuff coming back. >> the lack of rain not only

involving robbery suspects. it happened around 6:45 when officers responded to reports of a robbery on balboa street. police say a suspect apparently fired a gunshot, officers chased the suspects and at some point their patrol car crashed with the suspect's vehicle at lincoln way and 20th avenue. an officer was injured. he was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. the two suspects were taken into custody. our reporter continues now on twitter, follow us at abc7 newsbay area. happening today, san francisco will host it's largest egg hunt event. eggstravaganza will feature egg hunts, carnival rides, arts and crafts, entertainment and food. barbeque cookoff between san francisco's fire and police departments will be held. money raised from the barbeque will go to the san francisco rec and park scholarship fund. today's festivities get under way at 11:00. bring the jacket or wear a
