good morning. we begin with the big day in today's big race in boston. >> the runners are rested and hopefully ready to take on the challenging course, and law enforcement is putting its security plan into effect all to keep everyone safe and avoid something like what happened last year. >> abc's tahman bradley now in boston with details. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. this is a waiting area where families will greet their loved ones after the race. it's quiet right now, but this city is about to wake up for this historic race. it's a special day here in boston. the first running of the annual marathon since last year's deadly terror attack. more than 36,000 people, some of them survivors of last year's bombings, set off this morning for the 26.2-mile race. >> it's a beautiful day for boston. ♪ >> reporter: yesterday, the annual blessing of the runners and a pasta dinner. heather abbott, who lost part of her leg in the attack, will run the last half mile with the woman who found her on the ground and helped save her life. >> i can only imagine that it's

going to feel very invigorating and sort of like a sense of closure. >> reporter: along the marathon route, anywhere from 500,000 to 1 million spectators are expected. security is unprecedented. underground in a high-tech control room, officials are monitoring feeds from 100 cameras. >> anything of trouble and any person that's, you know, presenting a concern to us may be monitored very quickly. >> reporter: in addition, some 4,000 police officers are out on patrol, 500 of them undercover. >> it's important to note, i think, that this race goes through eight towns including boston, so that means you need a lot of coordination and a lot of communication. >> reporter: boston police got an early test last tuesday when a man left a backpack containing a rice cooker and confetti near the finish line. it turned out to be a hoax, but it brought back painful memories of last year. >> to the land of the free and the home of the brave.

>> reporter: last night before the red sox game, boston remembered those who were killed or injured and honored the first responders. as part of the security effort, fans along the route were encouraged to leave their backpacks and strollers at home. now, there's no specific threat against the race or the city, but officials remain on high alert. back to you guys. >> all right, abc's tahman bradley reporting live for us this morning in boston. thank you, tahman. and our other big story this morning, a teenage stowaway surviving a five-hour flight in the wheelwell of a hawaiian airlines flight. the plane flew from san jose, california, to maui, hawaii. the fbi says the 16-year-old boy, who had run away from his family in california survived unharmed despite below zero temperatures and a lack of oxygen. >> the juvenile was approached by airline personnel and asked him what he was doing out on the apron, and he wasn't too cooperative or too communicative. we did have security bring him in, and he was questioned by tsa

and also the fbi. >> the boy has not been charged. he was turned over to child protective services in hawaii. well, a horrifying end to an easter sunday service in ft. myers, florida. a car plowed right through the concrete wall of a crowded church last night hitting several pews and pinning people underneath. the church was packed as about 200 people attended an easter concert. 21 of them were injured. >> i thought it was going to stop, the person was going to stop, but it just like crashed through the church. >> there was somebody under the car. they pulled the person out. >> the driver was also there to attend the concert. she told police that her brakes failed as she tried to park her car. a sinkhole in central florida that had been threatening two homes has now been filled in. the 50-foot-deep hole opened up over the weekend and forced the owners of those two houses to evacuate. experts say thousands of possible sinkholes are waiting to open up in florida. underground water is washing away causing the limestone and the earth to fall in.

and in wyoming, they're trying to figure out how to stop a landslide. the slide has damaged water pump houses, lampposts, asphalt and even a house in an area near a walgreens. the sewer lines beneath the road have also been fractured. crews had to plug the sewer while a more permanent solution is attempted. new footage has emerged of the captain of that sunken south korean ferry. he was seen receiving medical treatment shortly after he reached shore following the capsizing of his ship. he has since been arrested on five charges including negligence of duty and abandoning people in need. this morning at least seven crew members have been detained. they're accused of not protecting their passengers. time running out in the search for malaysia airlines flight 370. the robot submarine provided by the u.s. navy has now covered about half of the area designated for the search, and it should be finished by the end of the week. at that point the search may end if nothing's been found. so far nothing has turned up. well, there's been a new round of drone strikes on al qaeda targets in yemen.

among those targets, a camp and a training site reportedly obliterated. the barrage comes just case after a new video surfaced showing a huge al qaeda gathering where leaders openly threatened america. and vice president biden is heading to ukraine this morning. he'll be giving the new government there advice on reforming their constitution and cracking down on corruption. but the standoff with russia remains topic number one. republicans are demanding tougher u.s. sanctions against russia for its interference in eastern ukraine where three people were killed in new violence over the weekend. all right. thousands of kids descending on the white house today for a colorful annual tradition. they are joining the president and his family on the south lawn there for the 136th easter egg roll. jim carrey, miss america, cookie monster, they'll all be the storytellers this year. there's also a health and witness theme in line with the first lady's let's move campaign. >> sure to be fun for everyone. >> oh, yeah, it's great. all right.

time now to look at the nation's weather. the northwest will see a rainy storm system that will eventually stretch over parts of wyoming and northern california. a wide band of thunderstorms will threaten south texas up into the great lakes region, and the eastern third of the nation will be clear and dry. >> and just look at all those springtime temperatures. most of the nation now in the 70s, 80s down south. the hot spot, phoenix, a summerlike 98 degrees. >> wow. all right, still ahead, a new kind of mixture. powdered alcohol could soon be at liquor stores near you. all right. plus, a family on an easter egg hunt gets a pretty horrifying surprise when a skydiver loses control and lands in their backyard. and later, a gutsy move by a brave young man. he asks miss america to his high school prom. what he got instead of that date, though. we'll tell you when we come back.

welcome back. as we begin thinking about backyard barbecues, there's a huge recall of hot dogs. kraft says 96,000 pounds of oscar mayer brand classic wieners were mislabeled. the packages really contained classic cheese dogs. some people are allergic to milk which was not included in the list of ingredients. the usda is investigating. well, more americans are leaving the driving to someone else. bus travel is gaining in popularity thanks to new coaches, wi-fi and the prices, as well. a study this morning finds a bus ticket can be half the cost of a train, and even if you wait to buy your bus ticket until the day before you leave, it's almost a third cheaper than driving yourself. young adults lead the bus ridership trend. also gaining in popularity are smaller sport utility vehicles. many automakers are featuring them at this week's new york auto show. these compact lighter suvs are

already very popular in europe and asia, and american drivers are paying attention. well, a superhero again vanquished its box office foes this weekend. "captain america: the winter soldier" was tops at movie theaters for a third time. it was produced by our parent company, disney. "captain america" had $27 million in sales. "rio 2" was number two with $22.5 million. "heaven is for real" debuted in third with $21.5 million. and booze is about to become more portable. a company called palcohol plans to start selling powdered alcohol later this year but only in establishments licensed to sell liquid alcoholic beverages. palcohol got approval from the federal government this month and will come in flavors like vodka and margarita. >> i'm thinking about like baseball games and concerts and all these places where people would like to sneak stuff in but can't because there's a coat check. a little bit of powder. >> a little bit of powder. there you go. >> very interesting. all right. when we come back, brute force wins the day. the firefighters took matters into their own hands literally when a man became trapped under a truck.

a hailstorm in el paso, texas, triggered this frantic scramble by firefighters. to rescue three homeless people swept about 400 feet into a drainage canal by a wave of water and ice. one of them, a 50-year-old woman was trapped under nearly three feet of ice. she was rushed to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. her core body temperature had dropped to just 75 degrees. all right. now for a look at your morning road conditions. it'll be wet and slick across a wide area of the midwest in the ohio valley with flooding conditions down in texas. then roads will be wet in the pacific northwest including most of washington, oregon and northern california. and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in

dallas due to thunderstorms and lightning. all right, new this morning, police in chicago are looking into a shooting incident that has left five children wounded. someone opened fire on the group after they had left a family barbecue. the victims' ages range from 11 to 15. it was the end of an extremely violent weekend across chicago. at least nine people were killed in gun violence. at least 35 were wounded. and back to the news now and the faa is investigating a fatal skydiving accident in southern new jersey. the 49-year-old victim landed in the backyard of a family that was out hunting for easter eggs. eyewitnesses say they knew something was wrong the moment he landed. >> the chute was here, and he was here, so as soon as i seen that, i knew he was in trouble, and i told them, uh-oh, so we all started running to see what we could do to help him. paramedics rushed the man to the hospital but it was too late. police say he was wearing a winged suit which allows sky divers to move forward while descending.

rubin "hurricane" carter being remembered for his lack of bitterness after a wrongful conviction. he got his nickname because of his boxing style. he spent 19 years behind bars for three murders he didn't commit. after being exonerated carter worked for other wrongfully convicted inmates. rubin "hurricane" carter died in toronto after battling prostate cancer. he was 76. singer chris brown's trial for an alleged assault begins in washington, d.c. today. a man says brown punched him outside a d.c. hotel last october. before brown's trial starts, a verdict will be delivered in a case involving brown's bodyguard. he was also accused of punching that same man. miss america standing up for a pennsylvania teenager after he was suspended for asking her to the prom. patrick farves decided to ask nina davaluri to the -- accompany him to the big dance when she spoke at the high school last week. well, school administrators warned him not to pop the question, but he did it anyway. >> she never actually gave me a direct answer. the whole school just started cheering and stuff. i gave her the flower and she kind of just laughed or

whatever. >> now, he apologized for disrupting the speaking engagement and miss america has asked the school to reconsider that suspension. she says she's flattered but too busy to attend the prom. and now to a frightening scenario that happened at a drive-through zoo in england. a mother and her two young kids were riding through the lion enclosure when their car overheated and burst into flames. well, they tried to get out, but park rangers stopped them because of the animals. they were virtually helpless as flames grew more and more intense. >> when anything is on fire, you know, there's nothing that you can control and you can't do anything about it. >> a ranger drove his vehicle right alongside theirs, and everyone got out quickly, and they were back to the rescue vehicle. they were admittedly frightened but luckily everyone was safe. >> wow. all right. britain's queen elizabeth celebrating her 88th birthday today. in honor of the occasion, renowned british photographer david bailey unveiled this black and white photo of the queen shot just last month at buckingham palace and social media ready with simple square

deck, a left lane between the incline and tower for another 30 minutes. mass transit and ace one off to a great start and bart has 17 trains and they are running on time. the san mateo bridge shows tail lights headed westbound and everyone moving at the limit. it is light. the bay bridge road work is not affecting traffic and moving nicely into san francisco. >> it is 4:29. we have developing news, a 16-year-old stow away from the south bay survived a flight to hawaii that could have been his last. san jose airport has security questions. >> the survival is call "remarkable." it name is not released because he is a minor.

a spokesman with the f.b.i. says that the 16-year-old climbed into the wheel well of a hawaiian airline jet from san jose to hawaii at an at fuel he was unconscious for most of the flight. analysts says that how the teen survived the flight raises many questions. >> i don't believe he was in the wheel well. that is what it comes down to. there are only two ways to survive: with pressure breathing. second, he who is to have a suit against minus 50 degree fahrenheit temperatures. >> the security footage verified the teen from santa clara hopped a fence and madely way to the flight without being detected. he regained
