everybody. >> welcome to "gma." >> and it's just day two. >> just day two. >> great to have you back, amy. >> thank you. that's all ahead. president obama traveling in japan. keeping the pressure on president putin. saying new sanctions are days away if russia does not back down in ukraine. three doctors killed at a hospital in kabul, by an afghan security guard hired to protect them. a nurse also wounded. and martha raddatz has all the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a hospital that specializes in treating afghan women and children. these americans, losing their lives while trying to help those in need. a group of doctors and nurses was walking into the hospital, when that security guard opened fire on them, killing those three american physicians, including a father and son. an american woman, a nurse, was also shot and wounded.

the guard then turned the gun on himself. but he's still alive and in custody. the hospital is run by a pennsylvania-based charity and treats tens of thousands every year. george? >> it seems like this campaign targeting westerners and americans really has intensified. >> reporter: it really has. i haven't seen such a targeted campaign to kill westerners there in a very long time. the taliban has hit a restaurant and upscale hotel and variety of compounds frequented by foreigners in recent months. we've been to all of them. this comes as the u.s. is trying to decide how many american troops to leave behind, as we prepare a major withdrawal by the end of the year. >> okay. martha raddatz, thanks very much. george, now, to president obama's tough talk on russia. and raising the stakes in the war of words with president putin. threatening consequences, if they don't back down in ukraine. abc's jon karl is traveling with the president in tokyo. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin

and george. as president obama begins his week-long asia trip here in japan, he's talking tough on russia. warning vladimir putin that new sanctions are teed up and ready to go, if he doesn't reverse course on ukraine. at a joint press conference with japan's prime minister, president obama warned he will soon slap more sanctions on russia, if they don't start supporting russian separatists in ukraine. >> we will follow through on what we said, which is there will be additional consequences on the russians. >> reporter: president obama has had his most famous ambassador at his side, caroline kennedy. she's now the most high-profile american in japan. >> it's not about me. it's about the united states. that's wonderful to be able to represent my country in a country that shares our most fundamental values. >> reporter: in her first tv

the boy's father. and jim avila has the story. >> reporter: the latest relative to offer some perspective in the motive behind the incredible stowaway trip, that puzzles the aviation world, is a cousin that lives in san jose. telling abc news, exclusively, the 15-year-old boy did miss his natural mother, who lives far away in the troubled african country of somalia. >> he needed his mother. but he never expressed outside world that he wanted to jump in over the fence and go to international airport and go to the plane. no. >> reporter: this, after the boy's father, a bay area cab driver, told "the voice of america," in his native tongue, that he was shocked when his son showed up in hawaii, traveling 5 hours at nearly 40,000 feet, in this. what the maui airport manager tells us is the actual wheel well of that hawaiian airways 767. i wondered how my son went

there. i heard that he survived. god saved him. i was extremely happy. the dad identified his son. he was very quiet person. he was busy, watching tv. and using computer. he had a tough time with his schoolwork, his math class, science. despite fbi reports, the dad revealed nothing about a fight the night of the stowaway, saying the boy prayed with the family saturday afternoon. authorities saying the boy jumped the fence at san jose's airport later that night. the boy may have wanted his mother. but there's little evidence he jumped in the wheel well to get to africa. he told airport officials in hawaii, he went to the first plane he could find. for "good morning america," jim avila, abc news, washington. >> still cannot believe he survived. let's get the other top stories from amy. you look fantastic after that vacation. >> thank you very much. one day and i'll be back to my old self again. we begin with a developing story overnight. a violent uprising inside a

prison in ohio. inmates taking a guard hostage, beginning a standoff that lasted for hours. alex perez has the dramatic phone call one of the inmates made. >> reporter: police say david martin, an accused murderer, kevin johns, and richard ware, who is locked up on a robbery charge, ambushed joe lynn, inside the trumbolt county jail. >> as he walked up the stairs, he was taken from behind. >> reporter: the prisoners used a homemade shank, to surprise the guard, and tying him up. the inmates steal the guard's cell phone and call tv station woio, to speak to a reporter. >> i can't get talked down. i need the story to get out there. i'm in a situation, where i'm calm as of now. >> reporter: martin says he's upset about how local media has portrayed him. argued he is innocent. and demand the media clear his name. the inmates even allowed the

prison guard-turned-hostage, to speak to the reporter. >> they took me by surprise. brought me into a cell. tied me up. never harmed me. they gave me water. they have loosened the restraints and put me into some cuffs. >> reporter: the ordeal went on for an astonishing five hours, until police negotiators finally convinced the inmates to release lynn unharmed and turn themselves in. authorities, this morning, looking for changes that could prevent something like this from happening again. for "good morning america," alex perez, abc news, chicago. >> alex, thank you for that. also breaking overnight, a major earthquake, shaking up the pacific northwest coast of canada and the u.s. the 6.7 magnitude quake struck south of port hardy, british colombia, and was felt as far south as seattle. no reports of any serious damage. now, to a potential bombshell in the catholic church. comments reportedly made by pope francis that could have major implications for divorced catholics.

a woman from argentina claims the pope personally called her and told her there is nothing wrong with receiving holy communion after divorce. that would run contrary to church law. but a vatican spokesman says the reports about the phone call are not believable. and no one should draw conclusions from a private phone call. and a new setback in the search for missing malaysia airlines flight 370. the piece of metal we heard about yesterday that washed up in australia is, in fact, not from the plane. the aerial search for debris could be called off as early as tomorrow. and back at home, the fda planning to regulate electronic cigarettes, which have been surging in popularity. the new crackdown would require warning labels, ban sales to minors, as well. doctors argue the liquid nicotine can make them just as addictive as regular cigarettes. but it could be months before regulations are implemented. and new york police are searching for this man, caught on camera, throwing a molotov

cocktail into a convenient store. police say he had just argued about a score credit. the clerk's jacket caught on fire. but he is okay. and finally, they say the streets of new york are mean. but new yorkers, passing by this man, foraging for food in a trash can, couldn't help but sympathize. one woman walking by offered him a bag of food, with i heart new york on the bag. she didn't realize that that man is, in fact, worth millions of dollars. that's richard gere, filming his next movie. and he was apparently extremely convincing, in his role. people just assuming he was another homeless man on the streets. but he was eating some food out of the trash can. i wouldn't have recognized him. he did not look like himself. look at that. >> he ate the food. >> the search is on for that woman. it's just like a prop. >> i hope he planted the food there. >> yeah. >> quarter pounder with cheese. >> he was chugging a couple beers, as well. >> we have seen that from time

to time. you may want to weigh in on this story, as well, because it's raising concerns about the big drug law in colorado. two fourth graders, separately, caught with edible marijuana on the playground. where did they get their hands on it? abc's clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: it's now legal to sell pot in colorado. but not if you're in the fourth grade. officials say a 10-year-old boy brought marijuana to his elementary school monday in greeley, colorado, allegedly selling it to three other fourth graders on the playground. >> pretty small quantities, which garnered a profit of $11. >> reporter: the next day, a second boy brought in marijuana candy. a so-called edible, made with highly concentrated marijuana, dangerous in large doses. both boys apparently stole the marijuana from their grandparents' stash. >> a boy preceded to unwrap it and took a small bite. this would have never happened had the marijuana been secured

properly. >> reporter: two recent deaths causing new worry. authorities say a 19-year-old college student jumped from a balcony to his death in march, after eating six-times the recommended amount of a marijuana cookie. and earlier this month, richard kirk was charged in the murder of his wife, christine. he was allegedly hallucinating after eating marijuana-infused candy. colorado is considering tougher regulations for edible marijuana. eating it can be more potent than smoking a joint. as for the fourth graders, they're now facing long suspensions. for "good morning america," clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> just a matter of time. >> it was made legal like that. and it's in the home. kids are going to go in the kitchen. they're going to pick up things. >> it's the responsibility of the parent, or the grandparent, to make sure -- >> you had a good question. what's the recommended amount. >> it was over the recommended amount of marijuana. what is the recommended amount of marijuana? i'm not quite sure about that. >> yeah. we're going to move on. we have an amazing rescue story.

it was all caught on tape. it happened on a tiny island, where a team of snorkelers were saved after a helicopter spotted their s.o.s. message, there drawn in the sand. ryan smith has this story for us. >> reporter: we were very lucky we didn't have a different outcome. that's what real-life castaways told us about being stranded on a desert island. watch as this australian rescue plane, searching for five missing people stumbles on a giant clue. a massive s.o.s., scrawled in the sand of a tiny island. an almost cinematic moment, like from the movie "castaway." their day began what was supposed to be a fun day of snorkeling. >> it was a great day to be boating. >> reporter: after dropping anchor to explore, their boat drifted away, leaving them marooned without food and water

or cell phones. >> went off down the sand bar. >> reporter: the group grew desperate, hoping their s.o.s. wouldn't be washed away by the tide. and fearing they could be in store for a long wait. or worse. >> we did suspect that we would be hunkered down on the rocks for the night. so, that wasn't -- that was a fairly grim prospect. >> we didn't -- >> reporter: in an incredible stroke of luck, another boat spotted the drifting vessel out at sea and alerted authorities. >> we wrote in the sand. we knew this must be them. >> reporter: and find them, they did, after nine harrowing hours on the island. rescuers seen here lowering down to the rocky surface of the island. and whisking them to safety. >> we very very, very lucky. it would have been a different outcome. >> reporter: all thanks to a lot of luck and that message written

in the stand. and lynn, the woman you saw there, told us she knows they were at great risk. but even so, she can't wait to get back out there and spend another day in what she calls, paradise. >> bring a cell phone. >> if you were on an island like that, what would be the one thing you would want? >> chapstick. i can't stand the thought of not having chapstick. >> yeah. >> i want a phone. yes. a lot of people are talking about what happened at last night's yankees/red sox game. two big-time travels. the yankees pitcher got thrown out of the game, caught cheating. it created a lot of buzz on social media. so many people weighed in. abc's linzie janis tracking all of the reaction on this. she's in the social square. linzie? >> reporter: good morning, michael. a huge reaction to what happened in boston. michael pineda, pitching for the

yankees. in the second inning, the red sox manager stopped the game and had the umpire check pineda for pine tar. pine tar is a sicky substance that batters are allowed to use on bat handles. but it's a big no-no for pitchers. sure enough, the umpire found some on his neck. throws him out of the game. let's take another look at that. there it is, right there. that smudge on his neck. that was enough for the umpire. this is not the first time that pineda has been accused of something like this. just two weeks ago, in a game against the red sox, no less, many people thought he had pine tar or some foreign substance on his hand. but it was gone by the fifth inning. he got away with it that time. not last night. by the way, the red sox beat the yankees, 5-1. as you can imagine, a lot of comments on social media about this. andrew marchand of espn, tweeting, saying the yankees have a million coaches. it turns out, they need a makeup artist, as well. he says #pineda.

coming. this is a potentially damaging allegation made, claiming that pistorius was lying under oath. on the stand, prosecutor gerrie nel tried to trap pistorius into inconsistencies -- >> you just started shooting. >> no. >> incidentally, your fingers pulled the trigger. >> reporter: after inconsistencies. >> if somebody were to say, you were respect. that person would be lying, am i right? >> that's right, my lady. >> you know who that person is? because somebody said that. >> no, my lady. >> it's you. you said it. >> reporter: a new report from south africa may have uncovered yet another twist in this tale. pistori pistorius described to the court a 2009 boat crash which left him in a coma. he said he smashed into the peer. >> the vaal river runs from east-to-west. and we were heading back west. so, the sun was setting in front of us. and i could only see the sun on the water.

>> reporter: but eyewitnesses reportedly have told "the south african daily maverick," there was no sun because it was already dark. and the pier was not submerged. the blade runner's representative declining to comment on this report. >> if prosecutors could prove that he lied about it, that could certainly impact his credibility. >> reporter: pistorius has pleaded not guilty to murdering his girlfriend, actress reeva steenka steenkamp, in his bathroom last year. "the daily maverick" report, just the latest attack on his character. last week, accusations that he had taken acting lessons, with spokesperson adamantly denied. for weeks, we've seen him sobbing and retching in the dark. and the agonized wails on the stand, after being shown a graphic photo of reeva's shattered skull.

>> if the judge believes he's faking it or acting, he's in big trouble. that would go to the heart of his credibility. >> reporter: with pistorius' credibility on the line, his defense team has a tough road ahead. when the trial reconvened on monday, may 5th. they have a dozen witnesses to call to give evidence. >> lama, thanks very much. he has a tough case ahead. now, to the surprising twist for the couple who had a terrifying confrontation with a moose in maine. they are now facing possible criminal charges. authorities are investigating whether they were harassing the moose. abc's john muller has the story. >> reporter: take a look at this close encounter. a wild moose stopping bob and janice powell dead in their tracks. >> the only thing i could think of is what i had to put between myself and the moose. >> reporter: janice capturing the run-in from her snowmobile camera while riding in jackman, maine, on friday. afraid the moose will come at them again, janice fires a

he warned new sanctions are days away, unless moscow stops lending support to russian separatits. and a standoff with russia took a violent turn this morning, with ukrainian forces killing as many as five pro-russian fighters. today, vladimir putin called ukraine's action a crime that will have consequences. and new proof of the ongoing troubles at general motors. it just reported that profits fell nearly 90% during the first quarter. as the company responded to a series of safety recalls. and a priest in detroit is charged defrauding his former church. the priest and his parish administrator are accused of stealing $700,000 to pay for a condo in florida. some of the cash, allegedly stolen right from the collection baskets. and a frightening night at the movies in miami. crowds rushing to evacuate the theater through dense smoke. turns out, it was just a popcorn machine that caught fire. it was engulfed in flames. everyone stayed calm. and no one was injured. what a dramatic scene there.

neither was an option for me. >> reporter: she pleaded for an alternate way to screen it. worried that three milk bod bottles might be damaged by the x-rays. >> we work really hard to drink lots of water and exercise and make sure we have nutritious food and milk for our children. >> reporter: she showed the print-out of rules to a screener. >> she read that. and says breast milk is a medical liquid. it is to be alternately screened. >> reporter: her lawyer filed a federal lawsuit against the tsa. >> in the glass enclosure before they allowed her to have her breast milk alternately screened. >> reporter: did you feel humiliated? >> you feel totally humiliated. >> reporter: we spoke with medical experts that say it's highly unlikely that the x-rays would damage breast milk. saying that the tsa plans to settle her suit for $75,000. we reached out to the tsa, which referred to us to this on its

website. when carrying breast milk through security checkpoints, it is treated in the same manner as liquid medication. parents flying with and without their child, is allowed to bring breast milk greater than three ounces. >> we were promised they were retrain everybody. and i think that breast-feeding moms can feel good about that. >> reporter: for "good morning america," abbie boudreau, abc news, los angeles. >> we want to hear from abc news senior medical contributor, dr. jennifer ashton. what do you think of the ruling? >> i think roar, momma, roar. i think the tsa regulations are crystal-clear. it should be treated like a medical liquid. but it is so easy to understand the upset of any woman, where someone stands between her and feeding her infant. that's such a primal drive. and this got in the way. if you get in the way, the claws are going to come out. >> even though the radiation, probably not harmful? >> all evidence shows that putting breast milk through the

x-ray conveyor belt or going through the back scanner is not going to do damage. if there's breast milk in our breasts and we go through the scanner, it's not damaged. and you get low levels of radiation when you fly. >> you can put makeup or other food through the screeners, as well. what can moms do? what should they do? >> i think the key is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. bring a copy of the tsa rules and regulations with you when you travel. and try to have a backup plan. stored milk. a pump. if you use it, formula, so you don't get into a situation where you can't feed your baby. >> i know you're a big proponent of breast-feeding. did you experience any of this? >> it was hard. and i did. i was going on residency interviews and having to pump in a bathroom in a hospital. we need to do a little better. >> dr. ashton, thank you very much. right over to robin, michael and tory. >> how can you stand still

away from all these people. okay? >> okay. >> no. stop. >> oh, my goodness. now, jamie foxx, you've always been electric. everywhere you've gone. but you're taking it to the extreme here. you describe your character as being devilishly angelic. >> yeah. i think what's great about the whole "spider-man" franchise is all of the characters that are villains, don't start out as villains. max dillon, who is the first black man with a combover, he's a big fan of spider-man. and all of a sudden, things don't quite work out. and this moment, when he's like, i'm going to be intense. and it doesn't work out. and he has this new power. he just unleashed. >> you described it so very well. and andrew, as spidey, as peter, you are able to play -- you have like split personalities. like a younger brother/older brother. what do you mean by that? >> i loved spider-man --

the crowd down here at times square. we're back here on the roof, with the cast, director and producers of "the amazing spider-man 2." getting caught up with everybody. you were talking earlier, jamie, about people who you think are good people. but then, they have some problems. and, dane, your character, as well. you're supposed to be his good friend. >> we started out as friends. childhood friends. but things get complicated. and ultimately, i have to take my life into my own hands. >> yes. >> and so, the battle begins. >> and you know what? there were a lot of battles. and a lot of dysfunction. but, emma, it was a love story. and you said that's what drew you to this role? >> i think gwen's entire arc is what drew me to the story. it's really tragic and beautiful what happens to gwen and peter. and makes such an impact on peter's life.

>> and, sally, your character had impact. you're the other woman in his life. >> i am impacted. >> i know you were hurt when he was talking about his parents. i mean, you raised this young man. >> yeah. i raised him. and you know, he forgot who was the one who did all of that. >> you know, you back there, did all of that. the director and producers. wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. let me ask you this. i know that you've been a part of this franchise. even though you're going to move on and do projects, this is going to stay with you. >> as a spider-man fan, it has been a formative experience. working with this amazing cast. i need to pinch myself. i want to know what i did right in a past life to get to work with these people. it's really a fantastic experience. i do. >> really? >> he can't get away from it. >> i do.

>> you've been a part of it. what sets this one apart from the other ones? >> well, it's bigger. the cast is amazing. everybody feels new york. we shot in new york, which is basically, spider-man country. it just is a bigger and better, more emotional, bigger action. our actors just -- they are the characters. i cannot describe it better than that. >> they did come to life. it was shot in new york. and new yorkers are very happy. it's the first time that all of it was shot here. but some of the destruction scenes that we saw, you did leave it intact. that had to be done with back lots and stuff? >> we love the city. so, we didn't want to -- >> thank you. >> we wanted to respect that. we actually built times square. we shot here for about four hours, in times square. and then, we built times square in long island, which was

insane, the scope of it. it's a really big place. and there's a lot of lights. so, that was an enormous undertaking. and we re-created a little of new york on long island. and we went there for many -- 100 days. to re-create this. >> you would have thought that you were right here in manhattan. we had a lot of people that were asking questions. >> the buzz, you know, on social media is huge. that's why i wanted to bring some of the questions from our viewers. i know you've been around the world answering questions like this. but katrina on facebook wanted to know what each of you, your favorite superhero of all-time. >> remember "the electric company," with morgan freeman? between those educational moments where morgan freeman was teaching us how to spell, spider-man would come on. and that was the first time you saw a superhero that wasn't animated. it was easy to go out and spin your web and everything like that. not only that, what this does

for kids. we've gone all over asia, and my daughter who is 5, has been with spider-man on the set, spider-man is the man. and for all of the people who have been hitting me, my phone crashed. you all calling me, and texting me, my phone crashed. >> we're here for you. >> i'm not shining on you. >> you're a big star, with everybody. so, they think you're not getting back to them. >> and my phone number is 818 -- >> writing it down. i think the other question, dane maybe said it. sally, people asking on twitter. if you could swap characters within the movie, who would you be? >> well, look, i think everybody wants to be spider-man. you know? that's why people go to see these movies. it's like andrew said, everyone identifies with peter parker and wants to, you know, make the right decisions and turn out to be the hero. they'll always be a little boy inside of me that wants to be spider-man.
