and today has been a day of ceremony, as well as diplomacy and mourning. abc's tahman bradley joins us, now, from washington, with the details. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: diana and john, good morning. president obama is in south korea, meeting with his south korean counterpart, who is being consumed by an awful tragedy. president obama's trip to seoul is being overshadowed by last week's deadly ferry disaster. south koreans are mourning the dead or missing, about 300 people, a majority, high school students. across the country, people are wearing yellow ribbons. president obama is still pushing ahead with his agenda. he led a naturalization ceremony for military service members and their spouses. there, the president sent the u.s. congress a message. >> america is strengthened by our immigrants. we're a nation of immigrants. moving forward, we have to fix our broken immigration system and pass common sense immigration reform. >> reporter: mr. obama paused to remember the victims of the

korean war, laying a wreath at the country's memorial. he toured the spectacular gyeongbok palace and plans to visit some of the more 28,500 military personnel deployed on the korean peninsula. this is mr. obama's second stop on his four-nation asian tour. he was in japan the last two days, meeting with that country's prime minister about a stalled trade deal. addressing the russian incursion in ukraine, mr. obama said the u.s. could hit russia with fresh sanctions sooner rather than later. >> we continue to see militias and armed men harassing folks who are disagreeing with them. >> reporter: much of this trip is about reassuring key u.s. allies in the pacific that they're important, too, even though so much attention is being paid elsewhere. diana and john? >> abc's tahman bradley, live for us in washington this morning. thank you. all right. we have breaking news in indonesia. a virgin australian jet has made an emergency landing at the bali

airport, after what authorities are calling a hijacking attempt. according to reports, a drunk passenger tried to enter the cockpit. indonesia troops boarded the plane after it landed. they arrested the man. there were no injuries. the flight originated in brisbane, australia. it's been 49 days. and there's still no sign of the missing malaysian airlines flight 370. the u.s. bluefin-21 robotic submarine has scanned 95% of its focused underwater search area finding nothing of interest. the next phase of the search is likely to be decided in a week. and it may involve more powerful sonar equipment, similar to what found the wreck of the "titanic." secretary of state john kerry accusing russia of failing to live up to commitments it made to ease the crisis in ukraine. using unusually blunt language there, kerry said the moscow -- unless they take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation, washington will have no choice but to impose additional sanctions. >> let me be clear. if russia continues in this direction, it will not just be a

grave mistake. it will be an expensive mistake. >> his comments come during an increasingly bitter war of words over who is to blame for the crisis in ukraine, that is becoming steadily more violent. secretary kerry also had some strong words about the middle east peace talks which have now collapsed again. kerry refused to accept defeat, saying the u.s. will never give up hope for mideast peace. and, quote, there's always a way forward. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, broke off talks in response to a reconciliation agreement between the palestinian authority and the militant group hamas. we're learning details about the shooting deaths of three american doctors in a hospital in afghanistan. one, jerry umanos, was a pediatrician who worked in chicago for 16 years before moving to afghanistan. his wife says her husband was helping afghan children. >> our family and friends have suffered a great loss. while our hearts are aching for our loss, we're also aching for the loss of the other families, as well as the loss and the

multiple losses that of the afghan people. >> police say the attacker was a member of the afghan public protection force and had been assigned to guard the hospital. he was wounded during the attack. he was actually operated on by the colleagues of the doctors who had been killed. we're also learning more about that teen stowaway who flew from california to hawaii in the wheel well of a jetliner. family member says the boy was just recently told his stepmother was not his biological mother. he had just learned he was separated from his mother at birth in africa at the age of 2. the 15-year-old is hospitalized in hawaii. no word on when he will return home. that nevada rancher at the center of a feud over cattle grazing on public land denies he's a racist. cliven bundy's spoke to his supporters yesterday following an outcry over his remarks about slavery. his comments were first published in "the new york times" on wednesday. but he did little to ease the controversy, as he sought to address the public outrage. >> the question is, are they

slaves for where they are? or where they live? while slaves they get the charity and live in the government subsidized homes? for are they slaves when their daughters were having abortions and their sons are in the prisons? >> republican politicians from around the country who had rallied to bundy's defense in recent weeks have denounced those comments. and they're distancing themselves from the rancher now. an intense battle along the new jersey shore, where at least five brush fires are raging. fire crews fighting gusty winds and low humidity, trying to douse the fast-moving flames. at 1 point, more than 600 homes had to be evacuated. but this morning, some of those residents are being allowed back. firefighters don't expect full containment until later today. a lightning strike in little rock, arkansas, has sent four energy contractors to the hospital. this happened at a natural gas well site. the workers stopped to wait out a storm. they came back after the storm appeared to pass, and that's when the bolt struck. at least two of the workers were burned. all four are in stable condition. let's take a look at today's

weather across the nation. much of the west coast will see rain. but seattle should be dry. rain and mountain snow in the sierra nevada range and the northern rockies. dry across the midwest, with a fire danger across the southwest. and the eastern third of the nation will see more rain. >> 50s and 60s in the northwest and the northeast. warming up across the south and midwest, into the 70s and 80s. a sizzling 90 for everyone in phoenix. that's the hot spot for today. all right. up next, we know there's a wage gap between men and women. but one field where it's not as bad. we'll tell you what that is. plus, justin bieber spent a very long day stuck inside los angeles international airport. why agents questioned him for hours. but first, it's the end of an era, after more than 100 years and millions of readers. a popular magazine is making a big change.

welcome back. you can blame raising mortgage rates for the slowing of the housing market recovery. demand for home loans plummeted in the first quarter to the lowest level in 14 years. new mortgages down 23% from the previous quarter and 58% from a year ago. mortgage rates are up almost a full point since hitting record lows a year ago. remember how amazon was burned by late christmas deliveries, the online retailer is looking to build its own shipping service, with the possibility of same-day deliveries. it could help control shipping costs. walmart, ebay and google are also looking into their own delivery services. here's a surprise from the male-dominated tech world. the pay gap between female and male computer scientists is one of the smallest, just 89%. compare that to finance, where it's 66%. or medicine, 71%.

dangerous winds north of boston brought down power lines and trees including this tree. crashed right into a bedroom where a teenage girl was sleeping. not surprisingly, it woke her up. but it didn't hurt her or anyone else. now, for a look at morning road conditions. roads will be wet in the east, from indiana to the carolinas and much of the east coast. but maine should be dry. a mix of rain and snow will make roads slippery into the northern rockies. more wet roads today for the west coast. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in charlotte, north carolina. it's not clear whether wet roads contributed to a school bus crash in southern california. 11 students and their driver were hurt in anaheim when their bus apparently went out of control. two of the students and the

driver are hospitalized in critical condition. firefighters had to use the jaws of life to cut the driver out of that bus. eyewitnesses say the bus sped down a hill, hitting those trees and a lamppost. and a fiery crash outside of atlanta was caught on police dash cam video after a high-speed chase. the driver of this jeep, hitting speeds of 100 miles per hour, flips over before it bursts into flames. police had to kick out the windshield, and pull the man to safety. the suspect thanked the officers for saving his life. they found a stash of cash in the jeep and drug-related items. a frightening situation in florida. an american airlines flight forced to make an emergency landing. 49 people onboard. some described hearing an explosion and seeing smoke. the flight did land safely. a sign of the times. passengers including a top miami education official, tweeting a group selfie, happy to be on the ground. justin bieber arrived at los angeles international airport and got quite a reception.

he was met by a mass of photographers after being held at the airport for questioning. his session with the agents lasted several hours. bieber is canadian. and foreigners arriving in the u.s. facing legal issues often are questioned. he has pending cases in miami, los angeles and toronto. and topping our health headlines this morning, is new concern about the spread of measles. the nation has seen more case of the disease so far this year than at the same point in nearly two decades. new york and california are hardest hit. public health experts say unvaccinated travelers may be bringing the measles into the u.s. from the philippines, where there is an outbreak. and federal health regulators have approved a dna-based test as an alternative to the pap smear or cervical screening. since hpv causes all cases of cervical cancer, the test can now work as a stand-alone option for that screening. and new research finds

taking statens to lower cholesterol may have negative consequences. calorie and fat intake used by statin users over a decade. that shows that they might abandon heart-healthy habits. one study said that statins should not empower people to put butter on their steak. one with a take your child to workplace. this happened during mrs. obama's question and answer session with the kids of white house employees. a 10-year-old girl took action on behalf of an out-of-work parent. >> my dad has been out of a job. and i wanted to give you his resume. >> my goodness. it's a little private. but she's doing something for her dad. right? >> how about that? the girl's mother who is a government employee said she and her unemployed husband didn't know the daughter was going to do that. the family had joked about it during last weekend. good for her.

mid-to-upper 50's along the coast into san francisco. now the only commute. leyla gulen? >> good morning, everyone, happy friday. it is shake. we have this overturned vehicle speaking of slick roads, southbound 505 is where we we have an accident. you can see we do have slowing. there is yellow making the push up to 80. so it is locking like a pretty slow commute and when you get on to 80 it is moving along fine from there. you can see all of the green on the map is an indication of where we have rain that is falling and it is making for slick conditions. we will take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza and you can see the lights are glistening and it is dry out there but i some sprinkles on my way to work so be careful. slow down the speeds. reports a lean was hijacked while flying to indonesia was false.
