two small planes collide over san francisco bay. one pilot missing, the other landing safely. and a frantic search in the cold, choppy waters. ♪ and she is the woman who stole george clooney's heart. she's beautiful, she's brainy and now she has snagged hollywood's hottest bachelor. all the details on clooney's new leading lady. and good morning, america. this is the scene right after the tornado hit. crossing a major interstate, i-40. you see it so clearly surprising so many drivers right there and look at these scenes right now, overturned cars, shredded and total destruction. this is all taken from a drone above. you can see the path as the twister headed east just as the sun was setting. >> we know the storm taking this

path north of little rock over the towns of mayflower and vilonia, the tornado reported to be a half mile wide as it remained on the ground for 80 miles, george. >> so long. ginger has been tracking this all night long and it's not over. >> it is not over. there are still tornado watch boxes for the midsouth to deep south, tennessee down to texas and that means the threat is not over this morning and we've got a new threat later this afternoon and evening. we'll be talking about that. it all moves into parts of alabama and mississippi and we've got to look back at least at least 31 reported tornados. it wasn't just in arkansas. that one we are talking about that caused the most damage and likely the most deaths did track just north and northeast of little rock itself and that's where we find the most stunning images and our alex perez is in vilonia. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, ginger. unfortunately, this is what many people are waking up to. you look around here, look, this is someone's front door. there are personal belongings

just about everywhere you look. someone's car. entire lives completely ripped to shreds. there are 56 homes in this subdivision, all of them gone. >> we're in it right now. we're in the tornado. >> reporter: in an instant watch as day turns to night and this car swallowed by the black clouds of the massive storm. >> we're in it. >> reporter: and then the aftermath as this drone captures the violent twister's path. a line of destruction right through suburban little rock. this trail of devastation lasting more than 80 miles, a vicious footprint of nature's fury. >> as i was driving back i saw nothing but black. it was huge. >> reporter: overnight arkansas rescue crews scrambling in the dark of night searching the rubble for survivors. >> this mass destruction is everywhere. cars thrown everywhere. >> thank goodness ya'll are okay. >> reporter: even in cars thrown along busy i-40. >> need help. >> reporter: crews rescuing many who feared they'd never be found. within minutes, the violent storm destroyed entire neighborhoods.

tammy's family rode out the storm in a closet emerging from the rubble shaken but okay. in vilonia, block after block of pure devastation. judy garrett and her husband robert escaped to their tornado safe room as the storm approached. 15 minutes later, they tried to get out. >> we opened the door and we couldn't get out. >> reporter: they were blocked in by debris. they emerged to find their home and entire neighborhood flattened. >> opened the safe room door, and all i could see was the truck and the boat and sky. should have been a roof there. >> reporter: the garretts only have this purse and the few items they were able to get into the safe room. and after losing everything, they say they have what matters most. >> we're so thankful god spared our lives. >> reporter: and there are piles of rubble just like this one everywhere you look. there's actually a car underneath all of this. you look around here and talk to people.

they don't understand why the damage is so severe. a lot of the homes are made of brick. you'll see personal belongings scattered all over the place. things they care about. one of the buildings that was damaged was a brand-new $14 million school that was set so open in the fall. the governor is expected to tour the damaged areas here later today, but the cleanup hasn't even started. ginger. >> oh, alex, it's terrible to see. we know we saw that -- we had those warnings out for days in advance. little rock was right there in the center and i've got the same type of warning for you today. this is why you have to take it so seriously when you see the red color from the storm prediction center. jackson, mississippi included just south of nashville west of birmingham, the area we're looking at and all of the orange has an elevated risk too so from indiana down to parts of louisiana. i'll detail more coming up. >> not over yet. ginger, thank you very much. we do want to bring in the mayor of one of the hardest hit towns. vilonia, arkansas. mayor james firestone. good morning, mayor.

i know you have so much work to do this morning. ask you went through this, almost exactly the same thing three years ago almost to the day. tell us about this one. >> three years and two days ago we were hit by an ef-2 that practically the same path. in fact this ran right along the site where the other tornado came. cut a path six and a half miles long from one corner of the city to the -- from the southwest corner to the northeast corner. this did a tremendous amount of damage. in 2011 we had a lot of roof damage, windows broken out, privacy fences. this storm was much stronger. the devastation was just tremendous as far as the damage that it did. before, minor stuff, now the houses are reduced to just piles of rubble. >> mr. mayor, so glad you're okay. we understand you and your family were able to take shelter. looking at the destruction

behind you, give us the status on the search and rescue effort right now. >> the first thing we did was organized the first responders into areas. we had the city set up into nine grids. we went from house to house looking for injured and any survivors. calling out to make sure that people weren't buried in the rubble. and it was a slow, pain-staking process, but we did that. and then, of course, this is just one area. really a small area of the damage that they have to search through. >> mr. mayor, just so sorry your town is having to go through this again. our thoughts, our prayers are with all of you as you go through this. >> thank you so much. >> just a hard situation. go west of there now to

oklahoma. one tornado has killed one. mike is there. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning, george. an eyewitness told me it only took a couple of seconds for a tornado to mangle this building as it passed through downtown. the building collapsed on this car. luckily no one was inside, but after surveying the damage, it's amazing that only one person died. >> it is swirling. look at the top of it. turn around! [ bleep ] go! turn around! >> reporter: as the sunset, thunderheads grew and tornados began dropping from the sky across oklahoma, kansas and missouri. >> it's coming at us! >> reporter: james and michelle were caught on open highway and sped to evade the approaching tornado. michelle video taped the tornado with her cell phone. >> it's coming right at us, jim. please don't wreck us.

please. >> reporter: that tornado did this. ripped through the center of the town, killing one and sending five more to the hospital. >> it was raining so hard that i couldn't see the drive so i pulled over to stop. i did stop. after i had been stopped about 30 seconds, then a gust of wind hit me and that was the result of it. >> reporter: rescue workers searched through the night for more victims but found none. even the fire station was damaged. the chief, grateful his men survived. >> they're like family to me. the guys that i serve, you know. serve with. so you just never know. it's kind of an eerie feeling. >> reporter: when the same twister crossed into kansas, it was estimated to be three blocks wide. destroying and damaging about 100 homes and businesses, injuring 25. quapa is near joplin, they have seen a lot worse around here,

but they're already picking up the pieces, george. >> thanks very much. and you have the other big story of the morning. i do. absolute outrage this morning against los angeles clippers owner donald steriling and his apparently racist comments caught on tape. everyone from president obama to his own wife expressing outrage. and the team having a protest. refusing to wear the logo during warmups last night. cecilia vega is in oakland where the game was played. good morning. >> reporter: the calls for donald sterling to step down or face sanctions are growing louder this morning. with this controversy swirling he was not here in his usual courtside seat to see his team lose to the golden state warriors. they are the recordings shaking the nba to its core this morning. >> it bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people. >> reporter: that voice allegedly l.a. clippers owner donald sterling in an apparently

racist rant about african-americans to his former mistress, stiviano. in the recordings obtained by tmz sports, it appears the alleged rant was sparked by this photo, her with hall of famer magic johnson. >> you can do anything. but don't put him up for the world to see so they have to call me. and don't bring him to my games, okay? >> reporter: the comments outraging everyone from fans -- >> it was racist. >> reporter: to magic johnson himself. >> he's got to give up the team. if he doesn't like african-americans, and you're in a league that's over 70% african-americans -- >> ding ding ding. >> reporter: the clippers even staged a silent protest in oakland sunday, throwing their warmup uniforms in center court, wearing their shirts inside out. coach doc rivers telling me exclusively he hopes fans stick with the team through the controversy. >> it's the team that helps the fans, in this case it may be the opposite.

>> reporter: even the president slammed sterling. >> when ignorant folks to want advertise their ignorance, you don't have to do anything, just let them talk. >> reporter: he has twice been sued by the justice department over his alleged refusal to rent to minorities. the cases were settled. abc news tracked down stiviano who's being sued by sterling's wife. they were settled. and his wife told us she isn't talking. but his attorney calls the recordings legitimate, and his wife told us the family is devastated by the racist comments made by my estranged husband. the clippers haven't verified it's him, but he is emphatic that what is reflected is not consistent with nor does it reflect his views, beliefs, or feelings. many fans are not buying it. >> he needs to be put in his place and gone. >> reporter: he needs to be gone. out. >> yeah. >> reporter: so many fans

telling me that exact same thing, they want sterling to go. how the tapes got out is still a mystery. she says she did not release these tapes to the media. george. >> thank you. we are joined by sacramento mayor kevin johnson who is spearheading the controversy as chairman of the players association. good morning. >> good morning, george. >> you called this a defining moment for the league. you have met with the commissioner. if the tapes are authenticated, what kind of discipline do the players want to see? >> i think it's clear the players feel the comments are unsplinble and reprehensible. i got a phone call from chris paul who asked me to weigh in and help the players association navigate through this very difficult time. i was humbled and didn't hesitate. in terms of the players and if i had to say one word and what they're feeling, i would say outraged. we had an emergency call with

the executive committee and player representatives. they want to be heard. they don't want to be pass i have, they want to weigh in. and they want the most severe sanctions allowable in the nba bylaws. >> is suspension enough? >> we want to know what broad range of powers the commissioner has. what does he have at his discretion? and whatever that most severe sanction is, that's what they want. i would imagine it's some sort of a suspension. i imagine it's a very stiff fine. we think that the commissioner needs to act forcefully and very quickly. >> suspension and fine one thing, but we have seen people like magic johnson say he should be pressured to sell the team. do you agree with that? >> you know, i think we want to let the due process run its course. i think everyone's wrestling will with not being too hasty and rushed to judgment. but we can't be hesitant as a players association. we want our voices heard. and players don't think he's fit to own an nba team. >> do you agree with that?

>> i think i do agree with that. if everything is authenticated, it's very clear. this is the worst kind of intolerance and ignorance. and it does not represent the nba. and players want two-way accountability. the players want a code of conduct where they have to hold themselves to a very high standard, and the players want the owners to have a similar code of conduct where they have to hold themselves to a very high standard. and we feel strongly that the most severe sanctions that are possible are important. and ultimately if the commissioner doesn't have the discretion to say that a person has to sell a team, this has to be part of an ongoing discussion. >> thanks for your time. >> thank you. dan abrams with me right now. you heard the players and kevin johnson want him to go, can the commissioner force that? >> the commissioner probably can't expel him based on the contract and the agreement they have in place. but the nba has a wide latitude. expect a stiff fine.

and a new phase in the search for flight 370. the australian prime minister saying that the aerial search has been suspended to expand the underwater search that could take up to eight months. and a pilot is missing after two small planes collided in midair after flying from a vintage airplane festival. one pilot was able to land safely, but the other plane, similar to this one, spun out of control crashing into the water. a 22-year veteran of the knoxville, tennessee, sheriff's department has been fired of a he was caught allegedly choking a college student into unconsciousness. these pictures appear to show the young man appearing to be choked and then collapses. the sheriff said the deputy used excessive force. and finally a big scare for a long dance swimmer. adam walker was on this charity swim off new zee land -- zealand

when he realized a great white shark was lurking beneath him. and then a surprise, a pod of ten dolphins surrounded him until the shark swam off. those dolphins seeming to protect him. funny enough, walker was swimming to raise money for dolphin conservation. and i was actually -- i was amazed that the sharks are afraid of dolphins, but apparently they don't like the noise that dolphins make. that was a really nice -- >> the convoy was so great, protecting him. >> for an hour, protecting him. >> dolphins are so smart. and now to the other part of the storm system that caused the tornados. ginger has that. >> that would be the flooding rain. even if you don't get the storms you can see potentially this really heavy rain. the south all the way to iowa. you could see 5 to 6 inches of rain through wednesday. and even just west of new york city here for parts of pennsylvania, maryland, down into northern virginia. that's something we're watching. not just the severe weather potential, but, of course, the

that's true. latest research out on an alarming surge in devastating knee injuries among young girls playing all kinds of sports. we're going to have what parents need to know to cut the risk of injury in half. yeah, we will have that. first we need to get to the latest on the tragic murder of a connecticut honor student killed inside her high school on prom day. her classmate who killed her because she turned him down to the dance will be charged in court and linzie janis is outside the school with all the details. good morning to you, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, lara. the boy who's been charged with murder will not be at his arraignment today because he's undergoing psychiatric evaluation. his name is being withheld at the moment but state prosecutors could decide later today to charge him as an adult. 16-year-old maren sanchez was so excited to attend her junior prom, she posted this photo of herself in the dress she planned to wear. but at 7:15 friday morning just 12 hours before the dance, police say she was murdered.

stabbed in the school hallway allegedly by one of her classmates. the boy, also a high school junior, has been charged with murder. >> he asked her to prom and she said no because she had a new boyfriend and he just got really mad about it. >> we also were aware of the stories out there and looking into that possibility. >> reporter: a teacher and coach who knew the suspect telling us, no one could have seen this coming. >> i've known his family for over ten years. was there ever any evidence that this could possibly happen from this individual? absolutely not. >> reporter: with prom postponed students headed to a local beach in their dresses and tuxes friday night holding a vigil. >> she was very nice. she was gorgeous too. >> reporter: and in this youtube video created by maren sanchez's boyfriend, he's seen holding her prom dress. his message, i will forever love

and cherish her. sanchez was a national honor student and an enthusiastic member of the drama club. >> it's saturday night. >> reporter: that's maren playing the piano in the video she posted online. students gathered at a memorial outside the school telling us her talents were second only to her kind spirit. school is closed at jonathan law high school here today to allow students more time to grieve with their family s. there will be a memorial service on the football field tonight for maren sanchez and the students i spoke with over the weekend say when prom is rescheduled they plan to make maren their queen. george. >> okay, thanks very much. more now on the firestorm swirling around nba owner donald sterling. the league could determine as early as today if it was his racist rant caught on tape but it's not the first time he's been caught up in racial controversy, and there are questions about how the explosive conversation came to be recorded and released.

>> 100% -- >> is that right? >> we don't evaluate what's right and wrong. we live in a culture. we have to live within that culture. >> reporter: over the weekend the president of the clippers came to sterling's defense saying "the woman on the tape is a defendant in a lawsuit brought by the sterling family who told mr. sterling she would get even." that lawsuit brought just last month by donald sterling's wife rochelle who claims stiviano targeted extremely wealthy older men and embezzled $1.8 million from the sterling family. the suit also claimed that donald sterling used the couple's money to buy stiviano a ferrari, two bentleys and a range rover and gave her nearly $250,000 in cash. but in court filings obtained by abc news stiviano's lawyer claims these were gifts. >> do you have any comments at all about -- >> i have no comment. >> reporter: on sunday stiviano had nothing to say to our cameras but her lawyer says she vehemently denies what he called

"absurd allegations" in the lawsuit. as for those now infamous audio recordings stiviano's lawyer says she didn't release them to the news media but some are still calling foul. >> clearly this was a setup call because "a," she's recording it and "b" constantly redirecting him to issues of race. >> what's wrong with minorities? what's wrong with black people? >> nothing. >> reporter: still no comment from sterling. and rochelle sterling was at the game yesterday in oakland against the golden tate warriors courtside, right across from the clippers bench. donald sterling was a no show so the real question now is will donald sterling come here tomorrow night when the clippers have their next home game? george. >> or will he be allowed to. okay. thanks very much. to dan abrams in the social square. this is just exploding across social media the last couple days. >> as you can imagine the alleged comments sparking a huge reaction on social media.

pediatrics say they're on the rise because as they hit puberty their body size increases but their muscles don't keep pace. how worried are you about having a knee injury? >> pretty worried especially because i play a lot of different sports so the injury would definitely make a big impact. >> reporter: now the good news, the study says girls can cut the risk of injury in half. so i hit the field with my daughter khloe and a friend to show them ways to stay in the leg. one leg bent, you'll straighten your right leg and lift your hips straight up and make sure your shoulder to your leg is all in a straight line and put it on your standing leg. both your knees below your hips and balance for 30 seconds. >> all right, so we'll bring in jen ashton. we want to ask you some questions but first you'll do our flash poll. >> would fear of injuries stop you from letting your child play

sports? what did everyone say on this one? 42% said yes. >> wow. >> 58% -- >> that's too high. >> we hope not. >> that's too high. >> yeah, that is too high. dr. ashton, let me ask you what is it about a girl's anatomy. what is different? >> there are key differences. i spoke to two sports medicine specialists yesterday and said there are major factors called nerve muscle firing. that's how girls initiate movements, jumps, how they land, how they move. very different than boys and it can put a major joint like the knee in jeopardy. then there's something called quad dominance, we hear all the time strengthen your quads or your my muscles. it will protect your knee. girls tend to be strong in the quads and weak in what's called the posterior chain, the glut, hamstrings all the way down the back of the body and core and that's important. lastly kg called the "q" angle wider hips put strain on the

knees. >> what can we do? >> encourage them to play sports. ignore the flash poll. first of all there are things very important exercises they can be done anywhere and started young. ask their coaches or certified athletic trainer about pep program and get those exercises. >> "jeopardy," let's bring in khloe. >> okay. >> so this is khloe. she's 14, an ice hockey player. i'll put you on a pedestal literally. parents should ask their daughter to do a simple squat, do it the bad way and what they'll look for is their knees come in. this is showing weakness and all girls will do this. their knees come in and ankles roll. when they strengthen this posterior chain they can do this on a step and hold on to a railing or a desk like this and go straight down and see ow her leg goes straight down. you can tell she spends time on the ice. knee below hip foot underneath and do jumps and when they jump

nick. that has to be just a dream come true. >> it was, you know, it was really wild because, first of all, what better than anyone thought became this kind of cool thick and i was like, wow, that's great. that's enough and then now -- >> reporter: now you got a screenplay. >> and the movie happened. >> reporter: i've heard rumors the ending might not be the same as the book. is there any truth to that? >> i cannot give away in good conscious give away the ending of the movie but it's, you know, i wrote the screenplay so it was in good hands. people i think were kind of worried that it would turn into, you know, a musical or something. feel good hit of the summer and it's not that. still dark. >> reporter: it has been a remarkable journey for flynn. laid off as a writer for "entertainment weekly" back in 2008 and a few years later "gone girl" on the cover of that same magazine. >> i'm back. it turned out okay. i wish i could have told myself four years ago, get this.

scene and spider-man is always there for the underdog. i read you actually, spider-man helped you. the comic book series helped you with a young kid who was a bully. >> that kid jorge vega you saw in the clip, he is representing me as a 7-year-old. we had a real opportunity to bring our -- as the filmmakers to bring our own 7-year-old in and put him in the film and jorge vega is the kind of manifestation of that and it's amazing because the thread of it that he has after spider-man shows up, if i was getting bullied on the playground i'd be looking up to see if he was going to come and give me a hand. but what the hope that i drew from the comics and the cartoon and that character is that i found that own -- my own strength inside myself, he was always a representation of my own. >> it shows on the big screen

for sure. we know that in this rendition, spider-man has to go up against two villains and peter parker has to hide his own feelings. which was the tougher battle? >> it's -- something simpler about, you know, being spider-man, definitely, because you're literally trying to neutralize any threat to any innocent bystanders. >> matters of the heart are so much more complicated. >> absolutely. i think in life what i find is my biggest obstacle is myself and i think peter parker feels that way too because he's constantly in an existential dilemma and unless he's -- and if he's not he won't be peter parker anymore. >> i have to say the chemistry between you and emma is unmistakable. i know you don't like to talk about your off-camera relationship. what was it like working with emma on camera? >> yeah, she's -- you know, i will write a book one day about how i feel about every aspect.
