good morning, america. breaking now -- >> big, big tornado. it's coming on the road right in front of me. >> the massive twister outbreak now causing chaos across the south. >> i'm in the tornado, in the tornado. >> more than 100 tornadoes reported so far over 10 states. the frantic run for cover. >> basement now. >> the word still coming in on people trapped and this morning, heroic actions saving so many. the restaurant staff saved in this cooler. the storms now stalled. we are live across the region in this weather emergency. and breaking news, a shooting at fedex. georgia police say at least six are injured at this hour after a workplace shooting at a fedex center in metro atlanta, details coming in right now.
7:01 am
decision day. the head of the nba set to decide the fate of embattled clippers owner donald sterling, just as the team is about to take the court tonight. we see sterling for the first time, and mark cuban speaks out. everything is really painful right now. it's hard to breathe. plus, drama on the dance floor. paralympian amy purdy rushed to the hospital during the live broadcast moments after injuring herself during the rumba. did she push herself too far to turn up the heat? and good morning, america. welcome back to michael strahan and we begin with this tornado disaster. even more now slamming mississippi and alabama. look at the storm chasers up close with their cameras capturing these terrifying scenes and sounds. look at this twister literally crossing the highway just feet
7:02 am
from the car in mississippi. >> just so, so terrifying. and here's the latest. there have been 114 reported tornadoes since sunday. the death count now stands at 29 at this hour over these 6 states and the big headline right now, the storm's literally spinning in place staying right where they have already wreaked so much havoc. >> and you see this utter devastation there in tupelo, and the threat this morning has not gone away. and, ginger, you say the storm could even turn back to places already hit so hard. >> correct. we're in what we call a blocking pattern, so essentially what you're seeing there, all of those images, could happen in the same place again today, and this is why, we have that huge system spinning. it's blocked. it's stuck right here in the center, and it's spinning, spinning. and so places back here from birmingham back into parts of mississippi are going to be in the threat area again later this afternoon and evening. but the storms that came through yesterday are still blowing through. tornado watch still in parts of georgia all the way through the florida panhandle.
7:03 am
so it's a morning threat, it's an afternoon and evening threat, and it will be including tupelo. and that's where we find our steve osunsami this morning in the midst of all of that damage from yesterday's storm. steve? >> reporter: good morning, ginger. take a close look at this restaurant. there were people here inside eating lunch when the storm came through. you can see the sun now poking through the roof. there's still plates of food on the tables here. amazingly, everyone here survived. >> big, big tornado across the road right in front of me. >> reporter: it was heartbreak falling down from the sky. at least two tornadoes tearing through mississippi monday. >> to be able to stop there and then see what the tornado had become or what it had turned into is a wow moment. >> reporter: one of them ripped through the heart of tupelo. meteorologist matt laubhan on our abc station was live on the air warning his viewers and
7:04 am
his 35 co-workers to run for cover. >> basement now. >> let's go. >> let's go. >> i tell people at home at that point you got to get to your safe place. what kind of example are we setting if we don't go? >> reporter: in downtown tupelo, so many buildings and restaurants this morning are missing a roof or walls. vanelli's was a local institution. the restaurant is a total loss. 13 employees and customers were able to walk away because the owner was thinking fast. >> one of the employees said, hey, there's a tornado coming, and i said, well, everybody get in the cooler. >> reporter: voz vanelli says he rushed them into this large cooler, and when they came out, the restaurant was destroyed. >> the building shook a little bit, and your ears popped, and 15 seconds later it stopped. >> reporter: overnight emergency crews searched the broken homes. eight confirmed deaths in mississippi alone. three people were taken to the hospital from this block in pearl, mississippi. entire neighborhoods destroyed. homes downed.
7:05 am
cars overturned. businesses ripped apart. streets littered with power lines. and the rare moment of relief like when constance lambert embraces her dog after reuniting after the storm. schools across alabama and georgia today are closed because of the threat of even more severe weather. lara? >> all right. steve, thank you so much. and from mississippi, parts of alabama also hit so hard from the severe weather. abc's gio benitez is in kimberly just north of birmingham with us this morning. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, lara, good morning to you. we are in a small town just north of birmingham. and i want you to take a look behind me because this is the church or at least it was a church, and at one point throughout the night, there were people trapped beneath it in the basement. amazingly, they got out, but, boy, it was a wild night in alabama. lightning tears through the skies near birmingham. the storm's fury menacing towns all across the south.
7:06 am
[ sirens ] >> reporter: sirens blaring. that ominous warning in alabama that a deadly tornado was on the way. this is the same storm that we're seeing here. this is the same storm that was in tuscaloosa. that tornado on the ground moving towards birmingham. we're going to go down and get shelter right now. we're on top of a hotel. it's just too dangerous up here. >> there's like two tornadoes over there. >> reporter: 13 tornadoes touching down across alabama just in the last 24 hours responsible for at least two deaths. and now reports that a 21-year-old in tuscaloosa died after doing the right thing, going into his basement. but the basement wall collapsed on top of him. the storm destroying this church in kimberly, alabama. 25 people were inside at the time. all of them survived. the pastor uses this church as a community shelter, keeping people safe underground. when you saw your church demolished the way it is right now -- >> i cried. i cried.
7:07 am
the church is not the people. the people are the church. >> reporter: and here at this apartment building, a massive tree took out two cars, and people were forced out after the building's roof was torn off. and this morning, officials tell us that people still could be trapped in the rubble. but emergency crews just haven't been able to reach them. there's too much damage. lara and george? >> all right, gio. thank you so much. >> and i know you've got the other huge story this morning. >> that's right. the latest on that firestorm surrounding l.a. clippers owner, donald sterling. sponsors pulling away from the clippers after hearing those racist comments caught on tape, and the nba commissioner expected to announce the results of his investigation later today. abc's ryan smith has the story. >> are you a racist, mr. sterling? >> reporter: l.a. clippers owner, donald sterling, seen here for the first time since the scandal broke leaving an l.a. steakhouse sunday night with his estranged wife, shelly. and when asked if her husband is a racist? >> no, of course not. >> reporter: a far cry from the statement she issued hours
7:08 am
earlier saying "our family is devastated by the racist comments made by my estranged husband." those comments, now notorious. >> it bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people. >> reporter: believed to be sterling speaking to his alleged former lover, v. stiviano and obtained by tmz and deadspin, they've caused no fewer than ten sponsors to either suspend or end their relationship with the clippers. >> do you think sterling is a racist? >> reporter: as for stiviano, she was silent monday while on her way to court for an unrelated dui case according to k app abc-tv. but her attorney says the recordings are legitimate though he denied she released them to the news media. >> don't come to my games. don't bring black people. and don't come. >> reporter: the clippers haven't verified if the voice is sterling. but they say he is, quote, emphatic that what is reflected on the recording is not consistent with his views, beliefs or feelings.
7:09 am
still, the nba is up in arms. on monday night, the miami heat showing solidarity with the clippers, leaving their shirts midcourt. and clippers coach doc rivers speaking with reporters by phone monday. >> i can't tell you how upset i am, our players are. they didn't sign on for this. >> i think the players are going to attempt to defy donald sterling in every imaginable way and the best way to do that is by winning. >> reporter: dallas mavericks' owner, mark cuban, however, said while sterling's comments were "abhorrent," the nba should not remove sterling saying, "i think you've got to be very, very careful when you start making blanket statements about what people say and think as opposed to what they do. it's a very, very slippery slope." and now this development, magic johnson, who's pictured with stiviano is believed to have set sterling on that alleged rant is reportedly interested in buying the team if it's available. as for the game that's happening here tonight, the lapd telling
7:10 am
us that they will definitely have a presence at the game to ensure everyone's safety. george? >> okay, ryan. we're going to hear from the commissioner before that. let's get more on this now from espn's sage steele, the host of "nba countdown." sage, thanks for joining us this morning. so much pressure on the commissioner to take tough action. >> yeah. so much pressure and rightfully so. and he knows that. this is the biggest task of his young tenure. but, george, as far as what we think is going to happen, again, it is speculation at this point, i expect silver to come out and give a full explanation as to what the investigation has entailed so far and what it will continue to entail because this thing is not going away any time soon. as for actions he might take, certainly a suspension. will it be indefinite? will it be a year? will it be a lifetime? we will see. and then a fine. i'm hearing it could be up to $2.5 million. so certainly a seven-figure fine to go along with a suspension, but here's what i really hope happens, george, i hope he comes out and fully explains what his rights are as commissioner, what the rights of the league are and, most importantly, i
7:11 am
think, what the rights of the 29 other owners are because here's the thing. i'm offended. i'm sure you're offended. but is what he said, george, is what he said illegal? and that's the question. >> and is it grounds -- is it permitted in the bylaws? is expulsion permitted in the bylaws? it doesn't appear that it is. and the commissioner has to thread a needle here. he's got to come up with tough enough action to pressure sterling to sell the team but not enough -- not so much that it provokes a lawsuit. >> right. and as we know from past history, his track record, donald sterling, he's not afraid of lawsuits. he's dealt with several and, by the way, discrimination-related racism charges throughout the past 20 years. so i think that he has to be very careful there, and he knows that, so explain to us, though because we might not like the punishment he hands down. explain to us specifically what is in the rights and the rights of the owners. so, pressure him to make it as uncomfortable as humanly possible for him to stay on as
7:12 am
owner. try to force him out. but i don't know that it will be legally within their rights to kick him out based on what we know so far, george. >> we will be watching. sage, thanks very much. and, michael, you've played in professional leagues. these players right now really caught in the middle. unclear what they can do if they don't like the punishment. >> yeah, if they don't like the punishment, what really can they do? if anything, you're going to play, not for the ownership, but you're going to play for your teammates. these guys have worked hard to get where they are. and they're put in a bad situation. so if there's anybody i have sympathy for, it's the players, it's the fans, it's people that have invested in this team who now see that the ownership they've invested in really has not invested in everybody else. >> no question about that. let's get today's other top stories from amy. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news. workplace shooting in atlanta. several victims rushed to the hospital. matt gutman is there with the la latest. >> reporter: six have been wounded. one critically so in the shooting. the shooter himself is dead, they say, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the bomb quad continues to comb

that facility. about a couple hundred yards up the road for any spbs device, now, none have been found so far. this is just part of protocol. folks who worked at this facility said that the shooting happened at the busiest time for them just before 6:00 and created chaos. amy? >> all right, abc's matt gutman, thank you. a scare in midair for a planeload of passengers over australia. this regional jet caught fire and flames shooting from one engine after takeoff. stunned passengers could see sparks from their window. the pilot managed to safely make an emergency landing. no one was injured. president obama is returning to washington facing the worst poll numbers of his presidency. new video shows the captain of that ferry being rescued just as the ship started sinking.

[ cheers and applause ] >> oh, no. oh! he decided to do a backflip, but, yeah, he did not land that so well. don't worry. he's okay and thankfully we didn't actually see that impact and i didn't want to see that. but apparently he's been having lots of fun since this video was on local tv. his name is bobby blanc. he says it was a

spur-of-the-moment thing. he didn't mean to steal the show but he's pumped up there was an open space, so he thought, i'm going to go for it. just got it a little short. >> they said they should have done a dress rehearsal because i think the gown -- >> the gown could have gotten in the way. >> did you see the face of the president? what's going on here? >> well, he did make national tv. >> he did. he got something out of it. >> bobby blanc. >> amy, thank you. we want to move now to brand-new video, revealing truck drivers caught on hidden cameras texting and talking on the phone. these are terrifying moments on tape when drivers are taking their eyes off the road putting everyone around them in danger. investigative reporter jim hoffer from our new york station wabc-tv brings us the story. >> reporter: take a look at this video, a distracted truck driver in arizona allegedly looking at pictures on his phone crashes into police cars and emergency vehicles killing one officer. the driver has pleaded not guilty to murder charges. it seems epidemic.
7:16 am
truckers on major u.s. highways texting or talking on the phone. on a new york highway, this trucker appears more focused on texting than driving. one of the worst cases we observed, this driver engaged in dual distraction, as he talks on two phones, carrying on two conversations. on any highway where we set up our camera, we easily caught truckers dialing, texting and talking on their phones. illegal for sure and potentially deadly. >> the truck just came up and hit him from behind and pushed him into another truck. >> reporter: a year ago, george and kathy were killed when a driver who police say was texting slammed his tractor-trailer into the back of their car on a pennsylvania highway. >> it utterly destroyed us. i mean, it's devastating beyond words. >> reporter: do you think the consequences are strict enough right now for truckers? >> well, is it really changing behavior? and from your video, that video pretty clearly shows that
