it's love, your way. good morning, america. breaking now, flood emergency. after the twisters, the deluge. two feet of rain drowning out entire towns. >> and you can hear the skies roaring. >> lightning and flash flooding make for a wet, wild and deadly night. new tornadoes touching down, as brand new images stream in of the devastation. ginger zee is right there. an emotional day. an emotional four days. >> just hours after l.a. clippers' owner donald sterling's lifetime ban and one of the biggest penalties in sports history, his team scores big. and the woman in the middle of it all speaks out in a bizarre rant. we'll speak to a fellow team owner in a live exclusive. tale of the tape. the video of a school bus packed with kids careening off the road. the driver saying she was trying to swat a bee. but was she texting, putting the kids in danger? do or do not.

pensacola, where flash floods are taking a toll. good morning to you, gio. >> reporter: good morning, lara. good morning, george. this is quite an incredible storm. take a look behind me. this car here has been sort of floating around all night long. and take a look at that burger king because the water is inside, table-height. this is a true flood emergency here. overnight, flash flooding from alabama to north carolina, to the florida panhandle. in pensacola, florida, one person drowned when their car was submerged in floodwaters. in mobile, alabama, an elderly woman was rescued from a flooded car. crews waded through water to carry her to higher ground. in this neighborhood, lawns replaced by lakes. and roads turned into rivers. and you can just hear the skies roaring, as this storm just pounds the pensacola area. more than 60,000 lightning strikes hitting here in just the past hour. this is the view inside suzanne's home. she and her family forced

upstairs to wait out the storm. in north carolina, this van almost completely submerged in a flooded parking lot. other cars creeping along and stalling out. the same area that was ravaged by four tornadoes earlier in the day. >> it's touching down. it's touching down. >> this car has been tossed. >> reporter: this morning, families in alabama still digging through the rubble, from two twisters monday. stunning before and after pictures reveal the destruction. this drone video shows what's left of an apartment complex. and amid the heartbreak, an incredible tale of heroism. 21-year-old john servati, on the swim team at the university of alabama, was taking shelter in his basement with his girlfriend, when a retaining wall fell. he was able to hold the wall back just long enough for his girlfriend to escape before it collapsed and killed him. now, i want you to think about this number. we're talking about two feet of rain in just one day. two feet.

locals here tell us they have never seen anything like it. lara? >> gio, thank you. let's get to ginger zee, she's in kimberly, alabama, just north of birmingham, in the midst of severe devastation from those tornadoes. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, lara. here we are. this was the kimberly fire department. you see the fire hoses behind me. and if you look over here, just little remnants. it was a two-story building. now, it's nothing. they're not responding to fires, that's for sure. you can see the firemen's lockers. and all of it just soaked from the rains of last night. the flash flooding, i want to bring you down to the gulf, where we have the flash flood emergencies in effect and the warnings. and the watches that go from georgia, through the mid atlantic, as far north as massachusetts. this is huge deal today. number one threat is absolutely flooding, up and down the east coast. look at the rain totals you might be seeing. anywhere from four to even four-plus inches in that yellow

area, all the way up. d.c., look out for that. and the potential for severe weather, damaging wind, and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. much more coming up in the nation's weather. lara? george? >> that's a big area. okay. ginger, thanks. we're going to get the latest on l.a. clippers' owner don sterling and the racist comments that rocked basketball. the nba commissioner has responded with force, banning sterling for life. and there's a strange rant from the women involved. that's strange one. ryan smith is tracking it all from los angeles. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: after commissioner silver's game-changing decision, earning him near-universal praise, the clippers got back to business, winning the game. and the woman at the center of the controversy, speaking out in strange fashion. tuesday night, the l.a. clippers got back to what they do best, playing basketball. pulling out a win just hours after the team's owner, donald sterling, was handed one of the staunchest punishments in nba history for racist comments he

made in a taped conversation with his alleged ex-girlfriend, v. stiviano. >> don't come to my games. don't bring black people and don't come. >> reporter: nba commissioner adam silver handing down the league's verdict. >> i am banning mr. sterling for life, from any association with the clippers' organization. >> reporter: sterling will also be fined $2.5 million. the league maximum. silver is also pressuring nba team owners to force sterling to sell the clippers. a decision that 75% of those owners would have to approve. 31-year-old stiviano, who denied she released the tapes, broke her silence in a bizarre rant overnight about her political ambitions and civil rights. >> one day, i will become president of the united states of america. and i would change the legislation and laws. >> reporter: earlier in the day, she was seen roller skating. her attorney released a statement saying she was, quote, very saddened by the nba decision to ban sterling for life. and she was, quote, never wanted

any harm to donald. she is devastated that this got out. her attorney insisting that stiviano and sterling never had a romantic relationship. the clippers' organization celebrated both their win and the decision. >> it was a great day for everyone. for the nba. and we're happy about moving forward. >> reporter: miami heat's lebron james showing his support on twitter. writing, quote, thank you for protecting our beautiful and powerful league. great leader. fans i spoke with agreed. do you think he made the right decision? >> absolutely. my gosh. and i'm glad it happened right away. >> reporter: and so, crisis averted. in fact the golden state warriors, the team the clippers pete, were planning on walking off the court right after tipoff as a sign of protest. since sterling got the maximum punishment, those plans were

scrapped. as for sterling's wife, shelly, she was at the game last night. but she wasn't in her courtside seat. she was up in a suite, flanked by bodyguards and left after the game. george. one of the owners that will vote on the punishment. the owner of the sacramento kings. you have tweeted your support. are you confident your fellow owners agree? >> the owners i know, george, are all color-blind. and they found this behavior was outrageous. i would be surprised if it isn't a unanimous vote. >> unanimous? 29-0. >> i believe so. i would be very surprised if that was not the case. >> how quickly can you all act? >> the commissioner has shown he can act very quickly. he acted quickly, decisively and definitively. he will have a committee, perhaps, look at the matter. and make a recommendation to the whole board. >> is this going to take days? weeks? >> i would defer to the commissioner on that. but i'm very proud of the way he's acted. and he hasn't wasted any time. >> he came out so powerfully, as you pointed out. but are you worried about the precedent this might set? some of your fellow owners, like mark cuban supports what the

commissioner did, did raise the prospect that put actions that started out as private into play. and that could be terrible for other owners. >> there's only 30 of these platforms. and it's a huge privilege and honor to own an nba basketball team. and we really are just custodians. the team belongs to the fans, to the players, to the city. i'm perfectly okay there being a higher standard for us owners. >> what about mr. sterling right now? he hasn't responded since the commissioner came out. before, he seemed to indicate the team was not for sale. what if he fights and takes this to court? >> i would say, mr. sterling, do the right thing now. apologize to magic johnson. apologize to the nba, the fans, the black community, the world at large, and respect the wishes of the nba. put the team up for sale, take some of the profits and donate them to a good cause. >> you worked with him as an owner. do you think he'll do that? >> i have belief in people.

and i think that he's not going to be able to sit at the games. he's been an owner for a long time. the team is having its best run ever. and he's not going to be able to watch that. he would be the most scorned man in the stands. so, i think this is the time for him to step up and do the right thing. >> the game comes out stronger? >> i believe the game comes out stronger. i believe that basketball is the game of the 21st century. it's a global game. and this just makes it all the better. >> mr. ranaadive, thank you very much for your time this morning. let's go to amy with the day's top stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with a breaking story overnight, fueling new debate over the death penalty. executions were halted in oklahoma after a lethal injection went horribly wrong and was compared to torture. abc's senior justice correspondent, pierre thomas, is here to explain exactly what happened. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, amy. there's no delicate way to put this. the state of oklahoma was trying to execute a man and it did not go as planned.

clayton lockett was one of two inmates oklahoma had slated for execution on tuesday night. but the second man was granted a stay after lockett's execution went terribly wrong. the 38-year-old was brought into the death chamber. the execution began at 6:23 began, when the first drug in a deadly cocktail of three drugs, never before used in oklahoma was administered. ten minutes later, he was declared unconscious. >> a few minutes later, he began convulsing. lifting his head and chest off the gurney. even mumbling a few times. >> reporter: as they administered the remaining two drugs, there was a problem with lockett's vein. >> there was concern at that time that the drugs were not having the effects. >> reporter: the blinds were lowered so witnesses could not see what was happening. >> it was my decision to stop the execution. >> reporter: at approximately 7:06 p.m., lockett died. >> the inmate suffered what appears to be a massive heart attack. >> reporter: lockett was convicted of shooting a

19-year-old woman with a sawed-off shotgun and watching as accomplices buried her alive. in a statement before the execution, the family of the murder victim, stephanie newman, wrote what a wonderful person she was. they were glad the day of justice had finally come. no word on their reaction to the problems with the execution. amy? >> pierre thomas, with the latest from washington. thank you. a federal judge had thrown out wisconsin's voter i.d. law, that would have required state-issued i.d.s at the polls. the judge ruled the law places an unfair burden on poor and minority voters. an ex-con near seattle is under arrest. accused of plotting to bomb a walmart and two gas stations. the fbi says larry gillette wanted to use the bombings to divert police so he could go on a bank robbing spree. undercover agents said they sold him a fake bomb. and they arrested him when he tried to set it off. also in washington, a school bus driver is out of a job after veering into a ditch with dozens of children on board. she says she was trying to swat a bee at the time. but newly released video from inside that school bus captured her looking down, possibly texting.

fortunately no one was seriously injured. and a big headline about the economy. new figures show china will overtake the u.s. as the world's largest economy this year, five years earlier than expected. and trouble for twitter today. the stock plummeted more than 10% overnight, since hitting a high of $75 back in december. the stock has lost half its value. investors are worried about a lack of new users. and finally, most people have to wait years and years to get their dream job. but not for this 3-year-old. tyren johnson out of detroit. he wants to be a firefighter. you can see, look at that, he already is one. he was named honorary fire fighter for the day. got to spray the fire hose. tyren had a heart transplant recently. and the make-a-wish foundation arranged this special day for him. but like all fire fighters, tyren is tough. he's recovering remarkably well from the transplant. and the fire chief has invited him back in 16 years to join the squad full-time.

he said his favorite part of the day is getting to ride home in the fire truck. what a brave little boy. so happy he was honored for his bravery. >> absolutely. >> pretty good with that hose too. >> i think he's got a career. >> thank you, amy. we turn, now, to an incredible story of survival. it's a great ending to a story that had all the makings of a nightmare. a family of three set out for a short hike. but things went wrong fast. and it turned into three long nights in the wild. >> reporter: this morning, a south carolina family is relieved and finally home after spending 60 hours lost in the south carolina wilderness. >> i guess i did very good because i kept everybody alive for three days. >> reporter: 43-year-old j.r. kimbler and his two kids, 10-year-old dakota and 6-year-old jade, set out for a nature hike in congaree national park saturday, when they found themselves lost in the 27,000-acre park. with no food, water or supplies, kimbler sent a text for help. that was just before his cell

phone died. >> i had to be strong for them. that's what i kept thinking. if i start crying or freaking out, it will make it ten-times worst for them. >> reporter: that text set out a desperate hunt for the missing family. 80 people scouring the park. it was by foot, boat and helicopter. while they were forced to drink dirty rain water collected in puddles and even tried eating wild turkey eggs. they were finally found tuesday morning by a passing park ranger. >> i eventually got what i thought was a human voice. >> reporter: the family was dehydrated but okay. and kimbler able to have a sense of humor about the whole ordeal. when asked where he's headed for the next weekend adventure -- >> somewhere indoors. next time i'm going to google it first. >> reporter: it would be hard to get lost in a skating rink for three nights, that's for sure. all three were taken to the hospital for observation. they're out and doing fine this morning. >> thank god for the wild turkey eggs. >> yeah, right? >> right. thank you. big news for "star wars" fans right now.

good morning. i'm eric thomas. two-pointing news in the south bay, three people looking for new places to live after an early morning fire raced through their home. it broke out on north 8th street near downtown san jose. firefighters had kicked the door in to get in.

nobody was hurt. in san leandro, three people with recovering from chemical burns that happened an an explosion at a homeless encampment near spring lake drive. investigators are trying to figure out what caused that explosion. a check on midweek traffic. here's leyla gulen. >> as you're heading into east palo alto, southbound side of 101 at university avenue, crash involving a mini cooper cause some big problems, southbound side causing delays as you head out of redwood city. northbound traffic looking quite slow. drive time traffic tracy to dublin, 43 minutes, 680 southbound to dublin, mission boulevard south, loading up san jose, pretty quiet. >> when we come back, meteorologist mike nicco has that hot bay area forecast

hundreds of pages of documents, releasing a new theory about what happened with her roommate. and what amanda knox is saying. prince harry splitting with his girlfriend of nearly two years. is he the most eligible bachelor in the world? first, we begin with the montana homeowner charged with deliberately killing a teenager he claimed was a burglar. prosecutors say he set a trap, fully intending to take someone's life. abc's clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: it's the controversy splitting missoula, montana. is marcus karma an vigilante? they were at home with their 10-year-old son. just after midnight, motion sen sens and this camera on a baby monitor alerted them to an intruder in the garage. the couple was terrified because

of two recent break-ins. karma told police he grabbed his shotgun and hearing threatening noises from inside the dark garage, fired hour shots. >> it's easy in retrospect, to second-guess what he could have done. but at that moment, he felt he had no choice. >> reporter: inside, a german foreign exchange student and soccer player. police say there's no evidence he was connected to any of the previous burglaries. >> he was an outgoing kid. once you got to know him, he was a friend, for sure. >> reporter: in a twist, karma is charged with deliberate homicide because prosecutors and police believe the couple set a trap. in court documents police say, that night, the couple left their garage door wide-open, setting up that camera, with flaiger allegedly telling police, she left behind a purse, quote, so they would take it. prosecutors also say karma, a u.s. forest service firefighter,

was heard saying days before that he had been waiting up nights to shoot some kid. >> my client didn't want to just kill some kid like that. that was not his intent. and he feels terrible about this. >> reporter: karma plans to plead not guilty. this morning, one life is gone. and another, if convicted, could face life in prison. for "good morning america," clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> clayton, thank you. and dan abrams is here, putting on his legal expert hat. let's talk about this. is it legal to essentially set bait for a burglar? >> it's legal to have sensors outside your home. it's legal to have cameras. it's legal to leave your garage open and have expensive stuff in your garage. it's not legal to bait someone to your home to then try to kill them. remember, the defense here is self-defense. as we talked about in other cases, it has to be reasonable and necessary. meaning, necessary, even to prevent the felony from occurring. he doesn't have to have felt he

was physically in danger. he has to have felt at least it was necessary because you're talking about in his own home, to stop the felony from occurring to shoot him. and that's where it's going to be tough for the defense. >> reasonable and necessary. you heard this before, recently in a very high-profile case. one in minnesota, byron smith, he was found guilty using a similar defense. >> and the difference there was, in that case, he literally executed the second victim. in the sense that one person was coming down the stairs. then, someone else comes down the stairs. shoots her. and as she's dying, he walks up and shoots her under the chin. this case is a little tougher for prosecutors because the defendant is going to say, this is my garage. it was dark in my garage. i didn't know what was happening. i was in fear for my life. and that's what the jury's going to have to evaluate. was he really in fear? was what he did reasonable and necessary? and again, as i said in a

previous case, jury selection becomes so important in this case, as to who you have on that jury because a lot of people feel really strongly when you say someone breaks into my house, what are my rights? you have to be asking those prospective jurors a lot of questions whether they can evaluate the evidence fairly. >> we'll be watching this case. we're going to get the latest on the royal breakup. prince harry has split from his long-time girlfriend. and lama hasan has the details from buckingham palace. >> reporter: good morning, george. after being together for two years, prince harry and cressida bonas are calling it quits. the world's most eligible bachelor is back on the market. >> they decided to go their separate ways. they're both very sad. and for the immediate future, she wants to focus on her career. >> reporter: royal sources tell abc news, the couple are still

the best of friends and the split is amicable. cressida was his first long-time girlfriend since his split with the long-time love chelsy davy. the never-ending speculation of an impending wedding. and cressida being a princess in waiting became too much to handle. >> there's no going back when you marry into the royal family. cressida found the idea of life in the spotlight difficult. >> reporter: the couple were introduced by harry's cousin, princess eugenie. the relationship first played out in private. shortly after harry's last tour of afghanistan, harry and cressida were caught hugging on a ski vacation. signaling to the world they were an item. recently, the relationship grew even more serious. the two even attending events publicly together. just last month, the couple were seen embracing at wembley stadium and at a rugby match. if history is any indication, this may not be the last time we

out a new explanation for meredith kercher's murder. saying amanda knox killed her roommate after a mounting quarrel, that may have culminated with knox stealing 300 euros from her. there is reliable evidence that multiple killers were involved, including knox and her then-boyfriend, raffaele sollecito. >> there's no physical evidence whatsoever of amanda knox in the room where meredith kercher was killed. >> reporter: the court finds the crime scene was cleaned to cover up their involvement. there's no explanation how knox could have cleaned up her own dna, while leaving behind the dna of a third man, rudy guede, who is serving time for the murder. in a statement following the ruling, knox said, i am innocent. and the recent motivation document does not and cannot change the fact of my innocence. in january, knox spoke with robin about her conviction.

is so extreme. >> and there's a rich history to spider-man. when you tackle a classic character like the green goblin, how do you go about it? >> i think it's important to honor the green goblin and harry osbourne as they've always been because they existed for 50 years. to honor who they are in the spider-man universe. but what's exciting is you get to give the world a new harry osbourne and a new green goblin in the modern day. >> were you a big fan as a kid? >> i love superheros. i think i started acting by dressing up as superheros. as spider-man, superman, ninja turtles. that's where it began for me. and now i do it as a living is crazy. >> amanda has a question that's related. she was on facebook. do you catch yourself acting like your character at any time? >> well, sometimes when we're filming, because we film for like 14 hours a day. so, we're literally these

characters more than we are ourselves. so, sometimes subconsciously, it creeps into my everyday behavior. but i try really hard to separate my personal life from my professional life. >> that makes a lot of sense. >> definitely. >> emma stone and garfield were talking about the chemistry between them. but you had it with your fellow villain, jamie foxx. i love what he said about you. he said, that dude, he brings the pain. >> jamie's amazing. and he was such a support through this whole process. from my first day of shooting. to my first day of filming was my biggest scene in the movie. and jamie foxx is up in this rig, just staring down at me. >> high pressure. your first scene is the biggest one? >> i know. it's insane. i was so nervous. yeah. jamie, he was up in this rig. and he was just screaming and shouting and rooting me on the whole way through. >> was it fun to play the bad guy? >> yeah, it was. i just really like acting. you know, this part is so

complicated. it was so much fun to, you know, sink my teeth in it. >> and it's kind of a big leap for you. you really made your mark, up until now, in the smaller, independent films. did it feel different as you're working on it? >> yeah. well, you know. it's the biggest movie i've made by at least $150 million. so, there's a big -- like, i've made movies in 24 days before. and this movie, we had six months. there's just -- it's a great luxury to make a movie of this size and to have huge sets to take your time and make sure you're exploring every option you can. >> you did a great job with it. thanks a lot for coming in.
