opponent. now he's heading to rehab. ♪ i want it that way the billionaires who want it their way. battling to buy the l.a. clippers. big names, from oprah, to floyd mayweather. and don't count out one of music's most famous. the bidding war that could be magic. and good morning, america. robin, welcome back from the big tour. >> oh, gosh. l.a. l.a. >> you were missed. >> you were missed. >> tough weather right here. >> there's no place like home. and it was tough getting home last night because we're going to look at aerial pictures coming in from laurel, maryland, this morning. more than five inches of rain falling in the area, causing serious damage. and we're also going to show you some people being pulled from the top of a city bus in philadelphia. they were stranded by the flooding. >> we have extreme team coverage of the massive flooding. ginger in baltimore. but first, abc's gio benitez is

outside the jail in pensacola, florida, where there was a deadly explosion overnight. good morning, gio. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. this is that jail right here. we're told that this building was actually flooded over the past couple days in the major storms we saw here. some two feet of rain just in the past couple of days hitting this area. now, i want to show you some video from overnight, showing those emergency crews. the gas explosion happened at the jail's central booking facility just before midnight. now, the explosion actually caused part of the building to collapse. more than 600 inmates and officers were inside at the time. now, we're also told 100 to 150 people were injured, including some officers. two inmates now, two inmates, are confirmed dead. and we're told that all of the other inmates who were there injured, and officer, they're all at the hospital. everyone is accounted for right now. investigators inside that building right now to find out exactly what caused this explosion. george?

>> gio, thanks. as we said, ginger in baltimore this morning. and, ginger, 4 1/2 inches of rain there, causing all kinds of trouble. >> yeah. i would call this trouble. that is for sure. when i saw this picture on twitter, i thought, that has to be in a rural area. no. we are in baltimore, maryland. look at this. come in a little closer. it's as close as we can get because it's still a safety issue. but that would be a huge landslide where ten cars were parked on the side of the road. they're all down in that ravine. that's where a railroad track lies. it's not going to be working today or any time soon. an active and emergency situation, where homes are still evacuated across the street. right now, this is just one of the scars from all of this flooding. overnight, relentless storms and drenching rains, slashing the east coast. from new england, all the way down to florida. rushing floodwaters leading to rescue after rescue after rescue. >> i started floating with the car. and then, it shut down. >> reporter: in philadelphia,

emergency crews had to save three people from the top of a city bus. and in delaware, nine children and a school bus driver had to be rescued after their bus got stuck in high waters. the nonstop pounding rain, gnawing away at roads, causing at least ten cars to fall onto railroad tracks, as a road gave way. watch as this car is captured on tape, falling in this huge, block-wide sinkhole in just a split second. >> oh, my gosh. the sidewalk's gone. the cars are gone. and everything just fell. it was like somebody came by and just ripped off the side of the road. >> reporter: this morning, just outside new york city, the morning rush, facing major delays after a retaining wall collapsed on to the train tracks. >> i just left my house. i got no electric. everything went out. everything is flooded. >> reporter: farther south, the sunshine state swallowed. nearly 2 feet of rain in 24 hours. this is florida from above. look at this pensacola neighborhood. homes huddled in four feet of water.

fortunately no one was hurt inside. they weren't in the cars. and we've got great information coming that they don't know when they're going to be able to get the cars out because on that road, they had to put in little seismic devices to see if they can bring a crane in and get people out. i want to quickly show you a look at what's happening. as the rain pulls away, it's still in parts of massachusetts and new england. we're going to have a warm one in front of the cold front. but big changes behind. i'll have that all in the nation's weather. robin? >> good to have you there. thank you. from flooding on the east coast, to wildfires burning out of control out west. more than 1,500 homes evacuated in california, as high winds and temperatures fuel the massive flames. abc's david wright is in southern california, with the latest for us. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. overnight, those hot, dry, santa anna winds died down. and that's good news for these firefighters. as you can see, they're starting

kick up again this morning. and the worry is, that could whip up this fire all over again. the treacherous combination of 90-degree heat. and up to 90-mile-per-hour winds, are making this fire fast-moving and unpredictable. the winds, so fierce, fire crews couldn't put up any helicopters or planes to battle the blaze. more than 700 firefighters are waging a ground war. in some cases, right up to homes. >> we're seeing a very, what we call a dirty burn. the fire is moving around in a lot of weird places. it's not a typical line of fire that you would normally see on something like this. >> reporter: 1,650 homes, more than 2,500 people forced to evacuate for much of the day. >> you get that adrenaline rush where you know you have to pack up your belongings. the thought goes to your head you're going to lose it all. >> reporter: that hasn't happened, yet. the fire has burned through 1,000 acres in less than 24 hours, melting mailboxes in some cases, but so far, no homes destroyed.

still, homeowners are nervous. the whole neighborhood smells of smoke. >> every time you think it's just going to go by, it doesn't. you know, these houses, last time, their backyards burnt on these houses. so, we know that it's real and it could happen. >> reporter: hot temperatures and high winds forecast throughout the day today, and that means red flag warnings throughout much of this region. george? another difficult one there. okay, david. thanks very much. we're going to turn to the breaking news overnight on embattled toronto mayor, rob ford, admitting he has a problem with alcohol, finally seeking help, just hours after a local newspaper reported on a new video that seems to show him smoking crack cocaine. abc's mara schiavocampo has the story. >> reporter: toronto mayor rob ford is making headlines yet again. but this time, announcing he's taking a leave of absence from his post. in a statement released overnight, ford who was campaigning for re-election, says he's seeking, quote, immediate help. saying, i have a problem with alcohol and the choices i have made while under the influence.

i have struggled with this for some time. this statement coming just hours after two new recordings surfaced, reportedly of the mayor, just last weekend. these images taken from a video obtained by "the globe and mail," which allegedly shows ford holding what looks like a crack pipe. an audio recording, allegedly taped monday night at a bar, making lewd comments about a mayoral contender and complaining about having to keep a gay pride flag hanging at city hall. >> this [ bleep ] flag up ahead of our canadian flag. >> reporter: in the past, ford admitted he has used drugs. >> yes, i have smoked crack cocaine. >> mr. mayor, have you purchased illegal drugs in the past two years? >> yes, i have. >> reporter: but has repeatedly denied he has an addiction problem. >> do you have an issue with alcohol? >> not at all. not at all. do i excessively drink once in a while? or it's called binge drinking or whatever you want to use? yes, i have.

i absolutely have. >> reporter: ford says he's been working on dealing with his various addictions for the past year. but this morning, says he is now taking them seriously. saying, quote, i know that i need professional help. and i am now 100% committed to getting myself right. for "good morning america," mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> at least he's finally admitting getting some help. >> i hope he gets that. let's get the top stories from amy. >> good morning, guys. we begin with new audio recordings just released in the malaysia 370 mystery. as new details in response to the missing plane. here's abc david kerley. >> reporter: we waited that malaysia officials waited four hours before launching a investigation. after another country asked, where is your plane. right after takeoff, directions to controllers to climb. >> malaise yan three seven

zero -- >> morning level two five zero. >> once the aircraft got to cruising altitude, the handoff from malaysia to vietnam, and what proved to be the final communication from flight 370. >> good night malaysian 370. >> reporter: two minutes later the transresponder was turned off. soon the aircraft turned around towards malaysia. 17 minutes later, vietnam controllers asked the malaysians, where is flight 370. four hours later, 5:30 in the morning. they launched the investigation. it's believed at that point to be off australia, where the search will enter a new phase in the coming week, searching not just this small area, but more than 21,000 square miles where the jet may have gone into the indian ocean. david kerley, abc news,

washington. david, thank you for that. authorities testing the drinking water after this train, carrying crude oil, derailed, crashed into a river and exploded into a fireball. no one was injured but this is the eighth crash of trains carrying oil. and montana's supreme court has overturned the rape sentence given to a high school teacher that stirred national outrage. stacey rambold served just one month in prison, after the judge said the 14-year-old student victim was, quote, probably as much in control of the situation as the defendant and was, quote, older than her chronological age. the judge later apologized for those comments. rambold will now serve two years behind bar. on wall street, the dow begins the morning trading at an all-time high. but there is some worrying news today about the job market. the numbers of americans applying for unemployment benefits rose to the highest level in two months.

raising questions that the job is lower than expected growth. finally you heard of rain delays in baseball but how about a geyser delay. watch what happens when this minor league player chases a foul ball. his cleat hits a sprinkler head and left players and fans running for cover. it took 18 minutes to turn off that water. that distraction might have been minor compared to this one. a dog running out on to the field of this college softball game in oregon, stealing the players' gloves. >> look. he does it again. he grabbed one right off the player's hand. and drops it after getting the other glove. apparently that was a little tastier. again, that's a pitbull. i'm like, you can have that glove. >> exactly. >> he eventually lost interest, and the game resumed. no one was injured. >> if i can't play, you can't, either. that type of situation. >> absolutely. all right. now, to the latest on l.a. clippers owner donald sterling. as you know, banned for life from the nba for racist comments. the attention, now, shifting this morning as to who may buy the team. oprah winfrey headlining an

all-star list of potential buyers. abc's ryan smith has more. he's there for us in l.a. this morning. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. leave it to an l.a. sports team to generate star power's potential buyers if the clippers are for sale. that's a big if. with donald sterling as defiant as ever, who knows how long this saga could continue. this morning, the nba working to convince team owners to toss out donald sterling. but he told fox news on wednesday, he's not going without a fight. >> his exact answer was, the team is not for sale. i am not selling the team. >> reporter: but if 75% of team owners decide to vote sterling out, plenty of stars are lining up to buy what may be the hottest property in pro sports. oprah winfrey in discussion with music mobile, david geffen, and software billionaire, larry

ellissson, to make a joint bid for the team. and another hat thrown into the ring. this time by boxing star floyd mayweather jr. >> we're very, very interested in buying the clippers. >> reporter: this morning it's not just donald sterling under siege after making racist remarks caught on tape, now his wife, shelly, is also being accused of making racist comments. according to a 2006 discrimination lawsuit filed on the sterlings by the justice department. a former supervisor at a property the sterlings owned, said hispanic tenates were filthy. and reportedly telling one tenant, who do you think you are, you black -- expletive. a statement she denied making. and said on the record, quote, we do not discriminate against any person. and we encourage diversity in both our tenants and employees. the sterlings settled in 2009 without admitting wrong-doing. in another suit, a former tenant took this video, which was determined to be mrs. sterling posing as a government official, allegedly in order to identify tenants she could erect. >> are you mrs. shelby from the health department? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: as for the woman who made the sterling recording, v. stiviano is refusing to

answer questions, hiding behind that now-familiar visor. even under the best of circumstances, it may take some time for owners to vote. sterling gets five days to respond to charges. and the vote would take place after that. but the question remain, if sterling is ousted, will he fight this in the court system. george? >> a lot of stories out there. and the clippers are on a roll. it's clear they don't want sterling as the owner. it's clear they don't want sterling as the owner. do you think the players care who buys the team? >> they want someone who respects the players and the game. you don't want somebody to buy the team for a the wrong reasons. you want someone to buy the team because they generally enjoy the game of basketball, they want to win. they're committed to winning. you just don't want a racist. bosom line. >> bottom line. >> but as a player, how aware are you of ownership? >> you're very aware. it's a family. you want to play for somebody that is committed to you because you're committed to them.

her husband, dino guglielmelli, sang in a rock band and made millions selling health supplements. they lived together in this sprawling southern california mansion. but there were cracks in this glamorous union. in the recordings obtained by kabctv in los angeles, he had no idea his friend was wearing a wire. >> by the time we're out of lunch, it's already done. you just need to pig you're out how to pay me. >> okay. >> how much? >> you already told me how much. >> 80,000. >> that's what you told me. >> guglielmelli pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and solicitation of murder. his attorney says the tape tells a different story. >> he was manipulated by somebody who was trying to help himself. he does all the talking. he's the one that is, in my view, soliciting. >> there's no stronger evidence in a case than an audiotape or a videotape of the defendant making incriminating statements. >> reporter: in a statement to

abc, a spokesperson for olsen said, she has been living scared for a long time and just wants this nightmare to end. as for the one-time vitamin guru -- >> i'll be happy when it's all over. >> it is. >> reporter: he has since declared bankruptcy, while living behind bars as he awaits a trial that begins next week. for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. we're going to move on to florida state football star, jameis winston, in hot water for shoplifting. he admits to taking about $30 of seafood from a grocery store. without paying for it. this comes six months after being cleared by sexual assault allegations. brought by a fellow student. matt gutman has the latest. he joins us this morning from miami. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there are two vast differences between these incidents. the offense this time, shoplifting, relatively minor. and this time, jameis winston also admits to grabbing crab

legs from a supermarket. the police citation he got, only the beginning of the fallout. this morning, florida state university's star, jameis winston is again, gaining some unwanted notoriety off the playing field. the football player, also a pitcher in baseball, was suspended from the baseball team, hours after being caught shoplifting at a florida grocery store tuesday night. the 20-year-old admitted to swiping -- >> seafood items that were prepared in the deli. crab legs and crawfish. >> reporter: for a grand total of $32.70. winston, who quarterbacked florida state to victory in the national championship game is used to ducking tacklers. >> touchdown. >> reporter: but he couldn't slip this collar. >> he did acknowledge he had left publix without paying for the items. he indicated to the deputies, he had forgotten. >> reporter: in a statement wednesday, winston said he had gone to the supermarket to purchase dinner but made a terrible mistake, for which i'm taking full responsibility.

but police say once winston realized he made off with the shellfish, he made no attempt to return to the store. in his statement, winston called it a, quote, moment of youthful inignorance. >> the reason this is a big deal is because it's another strike and a pattern of behavior that's being established for jameis winston. >> reporter: because it was considered his first offense, he was given only a citation. but winston does have an alleged history, accused by a fellow student of sexual assault in december of 2012. florida state's attorneys office decided not to prosecute him last year. but the department of education is reportedly investigating fsu over its handling of the assault allegation. in what was perhaps a nod to that episode, winston added, i realize that i'm in the public spotlight. and my conduct needs to be above reproach. now, in order to avoid being criminally charged, winston will have to complete 20 hours of community service and

probably repay the 33 bucks for the crab legs. this being his fourth alleged incident with the law in about 18 months, he'll continue to fall under increasing scrutiny. robin? >> thank you for that, matt. he's saying all of the right things in his statement. knowing that, yes, he is under the spotlight. and he's got to conduct himself in a certain way. and it seems to be a pattern, which is very disturbing to some people. but he's been suspended from the baseball team. they're taking it seriously. >> but you only get so many chances. that's what he needs to realize. and i guess it's safe to say, he ate the evidence. >> it's safe to say that? it is safe to say that? >> i couldn't help myself. i'm sorry. >> michael, you are a man after my own heart. >> we're going to move on from that. i know. get another check of the weather and ginger, who is in baltimore. hey, ginger. >> hey, there, robin.

sadly, my grandmother died of an allergic reaction to penicillin. it's definitely something we see. the vast majority of these cases are treated safely, effectively, and rapidly, in the emergency. we observe the patient for eight hours and they're sent home. >> what's the most important thing for people to know about all this? >> something i hear from my patients all the time. they say i'm allergic to penicillin, when pressed about that, they've never formally been tested. it's so easy. go to an allergist. skin testing. blood testing. there's a big study for all the people who say they're allergic to penicillin, 2% in reality are. and you need to know if you're going to be treated for a serious infection, whether you can use that drug. >> yeah. my daughter's allergic to penicillin. is it possible to be allergic and not be allergic? or to have -- you know, have a relapse? >> well, two separate questions. you can be allergic to penicillin and have a

cross-allergy, to another class of medication. but there's a rare condition that is called relapsing where you can get fever, joint pain, rash. and that can happen a week or two weeks after you had that insulting agent. >> and this is usually cured quickly, within a matter of days. not 27 days. >> 27 is not a number we use in the medical literature. we talk in terms of hours, weeks, months. not odd numbers. >> incredibly rare. >> it's rare. but it can happen. relapsing is the term. and you can see it. >> you have to be careful. >> the bottom line, if you're going to use an antibiotic, you need to use the antibiotic, speak to a doctor if you're concerned about an allergic reaction. >> jen, thanks very much. a lot of other headlines burning up the "heat index"overnight. details on prince harry and cressida bonas' split. the top story on people.com, saying things weren't going well for the couple. they've been together for about two years. it could have been because of airfare.

hi. how are you? hi. you guys are already eating. >> all right. we're cooking. you enjoy. >> what we're going to do is with that white rice we just talked about, how about soy marinated short ribs. it's all in the marinade. i'm going to do soy sauce and dump in some water here. dump in some water. we have some onion. garlic. it's so easy. some brown sugar to help it brown. a little bit of rice vinegar for tang and acid. a little bit of sesame oil. and some black pepper. so simple. that's the marinade we have right here. we're taking the short ribs and put in a bag. half of it goes in here. these ribs are -- they're cut across the bone. here, i've taken my ribs out. let them come to room temperature. and slowly add -- just add one

right in there. and we're going to sere them in a hot pan. they get nice and seared. >> can i ask a question? searing, should i have a spray in there? >> we have all of the oil in our marinade. >> there's nothing in the pan? >> that's a good question. ribs are really fatty. this is what we're looking for. and get nice and brown. and grab one out for me. they get nice and brown. you see the caramelization. there's flavor in the brown. we're going to serve this with a tangy. >> i'm burning them. >> you're not burning them. here we're going to serve it with a tangy and spicy coleslaw, that will put through the fat of these ribs. you're tasting it. jalapeno peppers and vinegar. then, we're going to do a pie with apples.
