defending sterling and demanding he apologize for the racist rant she caught on tape. >> we're going to play you some of the key moments from her exchange with barbara in a moment. first, let's go to abc's ryan smith, who has been covering this story all week from los angeles. ryan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. good morning, bianna. finally, donald sterling and his former companion, v. stiviano, speaking out. opening up a strange and mysterious window into their relationship. los angeles clippers owner, donald sterling and the woman who taped his racist rant, v. stiviano, finally breaking their silence. sterling told "du jour," a magazine that caters to the wealthy, quote, i wish i had just paid her off. in an exclusive interview with abc's barbara walters, stiviano described the embattled owner's state of mind, after speaking with him just minutes earlier. >> i think he feels very alone. tormented. emotionally traumatized. >> reporter: it was a week ago friday, in the middle of the nba playoffs, that the 80-year-old billionaire became what now some

call the most hated man in america, because of the release of his hate-filled comments caught on tape by the gossip website tmz. >> it bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people. >> reporter: all seemingly set off by a photo stiviano took with nba legend, magic johnson, posted on her instagram. >> don't put him on instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. >> reporter: a private conversation between sterling and stiviano, going viral over the next 24 hours. drawing near-instantaneous, scathing reaction. johnson took up the task immediately. >> he has to give up the team. if he doesn't like african-americans and you're in a league that's over 70% african-americans. >> ding, ding, ding. >> reporter: on tuesday, nba commissioner, adam silver, handed down one of the staunchest punishments in sports history to sterling. >> i am banning mr. sterling for life. >> reporter: as the players protested sterling's comments, he went into seclusion.

and his wife, shelly sterling, maintained her presence and defense of her husband. >> are you a racist? the accusations, are they true? >> forget it. it's not true. >> not true? >> no. of course not. >> reporter: but released a statement in an attempt to distance herself from the controversy, stating, quote, our family is devastated by the racist comments made by my estranged husband. meanwhile, stiviano seemed to set a new bar for strangeness. spotted all over town, making the full-face visor famous. >> i want to be very, very polite. i got california rolls from koi, for you guys. >> reporter: and tonight, right here at the staples center, one of the biggest games in clipper history. a win or season over game versus the golden state warriors with a trip to the western conference semifinals on the line. drama on and off the court. >> this isn't what the players want after having much a good season, as well. ryan, our thanks to you.

we want to get straight to barbara walters' exclusive one-on-one with the woman at the center of the scandal, v. stiviano. her first interview since she recorded donald sterling making racist remarks during a phone call. >> is donald sterling a racist? >> no. i don't believe it in my heart. i think the things he says are not what he feels. anyone can say anything in the heat of the moment. >> sometimes in the heat of the moment, you say things -- >> that you mean. >> that you mean. >> or that you felt. >> do you think he should apologize? >> absolutely. >> do you think he will apologize? >> only god knows. >> i want to go through some of the things that he has said and get your comment on them. he said to you, about black people, you can sleep with them, you can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. >> the little i ask you is not to promote it on that and not to bring them to my games. >> mr. sterling allowed me to bring whomever i wanted. and in a case when mr. sterling

wasn't there, people would call him and tell him that i brought a certain amount of people. and that they look like a certain way. >> black people? >> not just black people. >> well -- >> v. brought gangsters or v. was hanging out with thugs. or v. was hanging around with bad women. or with women. this wasn't the first time. there's been numbers of occasions where mr. sterling and i have had conversations like this one. it was just one of the very many. and we were just sharing information with one another about how he felt and how i felt. >> in one of your recorded conversations with sterling, you said, i wish i could change the color of my skin. >> i was being cynical and sarcastic. >> i see. >> i wanted to get him to see

what he was doing to me, what he was doing to himself. i think he was brought up to believe those things. >> what things? >> segregation. uh-huh. >> whites and blacks. minorities. >> you said that donald sterling is emotionally traumatized. from what? >> from everything. from everyone. he's hurt. i think he's highly more traumatized and hurt by the things he said himself. >> what advice are you giving donald sterling now? >> i just want him to come to his senses. i want him to believe it and feel it and to generally feel apologetic to the world. i'm giving him the advice that he should apologize to the nation, to the world, for his racist remarks. truth is, these conversations were in private. nevertheless, they became public. and because they did, a lot of people have been hurt by it.

his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his team, his fans, myself included. >> fascinating to watch. and of course, there's so many more questions. why is she defending sterling? what exactly is the nature of their relationship? romantic or financial? >> right. and barbara will be asking those questions and much more coming up in our next half hour, when we bring you some of the other key moments from her exclusive interview. >> including the fact that she says sterling refers to her as a silly rabbit. there's a lot more to talk about this morning. we do have some other headlines. for that, as always, we turn it over to mr. ron claiborne. good morning, sir. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with more turmoil in ukraine this morning. seven captured military observers and their five counterparts have been released. this comes a day after violent clashes between pro-ukrainian and pro-russian groups in the city of odessa. 31 people died inside a fire in a building that had been used by

pro-russian separatists. the latest clashes are triggered by ukraine's offensive to recapture the city of slovyansk from forces siding with russia. russia claims it has gotten thousands of pleas of help from inside. a major ruling in a legal battle between the world's top smartphonemakers. a federal jury ruled that samsung enfringed on apple's features. samsung was ordered to pay $120 million in damages. that was far short of the $2.2 billion apple had been seeking. apple's big payday was reduced slightly when the same jury found that apple, too, had copied one of samsung's patents. and a school bus near georgetown, mississippi, in flames. moments earlier, it was carrying high school students. but a postal worker, betty wyndam, happened to see the bus when it started to smoke. she is also a part-time firefighter. drove in front of the bus, forcing it to stop. she and her sister helped the

driver and 21 students off just in time. the cause of that fire is under investigation. heads up for that. and panic underground in new york city, as a packed subway train goes off the rails. the train derailed between two stations in queens on friday. rescue crews had to go into the tunnels through emergency exits in the sidewalks above to get to the thousand trapped passengers. one of the eight cars derailed. 19 people were injured, 4 of them seriously. no word yet on what caused that derailment. and new this morning, the teenager who stowed away in a jetliner's wheel well on a flight to hawaii has now left the state. his father was in honolulu earlier this week. but officials there did not say whether the two left together. he survived the 5 1/2-hour flight from san jose, california, to maui, after he jumped an airport fence and climbed in the wheel well of that boeing 767. and look at this surveillance photo of a man pointing a pitchfork at workers at a georgia waffle house.

investigators say he ran off with a cash register but couldn't hold on to the loot. so, he dropped the pitchfork. some workers pursued him. they grabbed the discarded pitchfork and used it to smash the window of this guy's truck. but the suspect got away. the police say the same guy is wanted for several other armed robberies. >> sounds like a crime from the 1800s. >> it does, doesn't it? and a lesson in humidity. a well-known homeless man in upstate new york, found 250 bucks outside of a restaurant. instead of keeping the money for himself, he gave it to police. locals have known him for years, saying he usually keeps to himself and has a knack for good deeds. after all, the same man found almost $500 last year. and he also turned that in. when a reporter asked him about his latest find and giving the money back, he said, quote, wouldn't you do the same? >> see if he can teach the guy with the pitch fork a thing or two. >> good story. >> thank you, ron. we're learning a lot more

about that alleged bomb plot stopped by police in minnesota. they say a teenager obsessed by columbine planned to kill his family and then blow up his high school. the woman who called the cops is revealing what raised her suspicions. abc's alex perez is in waseca, minnesota, this morning. alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. prosecutors are seeking to charge the teenager as an adult. school officials here have announced a few changes, hoping to calm fears. overnight, worried parents packed waseca junior and senior high school, as the superintendent revealed new safety measures. including plans to install panic butts and magnetic locks at schools, all in the wake of what could have been a deadly tragedy. your quick thinking may have saved lives. how does that feel? >> it makes me feel good. i'm glad i trusted my gut. >> reporter: chelsie is being

hailed a hero. she called 911 tuesday, when she noticed 17-year-old john david ladue, cutting through her backyard, instead of the sidewalk, to get to this nearby storage unit. you see him walking through your backyard, that made you suspicion. >> he made himself look suspicion by trying not to be seen. >> reporter: they found ladue inside and the makings of a massacre. ammo and materials to make nail bombs. investigators say ladue was just days away from carrying out a plot that involved killing his family, setting a fire to distract police and then, heading for the high school. >> he planned to set off numerous bombs during the lunch hour. kill a resource officer as he responded to help. set fires and shoot students and staff. >> reporter: ladue allegedly admitted to setting off explosions in nearby areas, as preparation for his deadly attack. and investigators say ladue had allegedly been plan the attack for about ten months. and sketched out every detail in a journal. a journal in police hands. >> thank goodness that witness acted on her intuition.

now, a health alert. a deadly virus thought to have originated in camels in the middle east, has turned up in indiana, in the first known case in the united states. it's called mers, short for middle east respiratory syndrome. and it causes respiratory illness. what is the latest case in the u.s. mean for people living in this country? let's bring in abc's dr. jennifer ashton for more on this. tell us about mers. what is it? >> think of it like sars, which is a respiratory virus, causing acute respiratory failure in some cases. only, believe it or not, it appears to be more deadly. this is a brand-new virus. it's only about two years old. we're learning a lot about it. it did start in the middle east. migrated to some countries in europe. and now, made landfall in the united states. this is something we expected. but the cdc and the world health organization, the disease trackers, the medical

detectives, are working around the clock to learn more and more about this case. >> it's like a scene out of the movie "outbreak." how contagious is it? we know this man is in isolation at the hospital. >> he's in isolation because he's hospitalized. the cdc says it poses a low risk to the general u.s. population. people who are on the plane that landed in chicago, on the bus that went from chicago to indiana. they will be contacting those people just out of a sense of precaution. it's really close, prolonged contact. and we don't know that much about how it spreads, person-to-person. only that it appears that it can spread person-to-person. >> we don't know how contagious it is. what are some of the treatments out there? are there? >> there really isn't. there's no vaccine. there's no direct antiviral medication. the treatment is supportive. people have been to this part of the world where there are cases in the middle east. they get symptoms of shortness of breath, fever, severe cough, they have to alert them to a medical professional and tell them where they've been.

people in this country, just precautionary. >> better to be proactive if you're starting to feel these symptoms. >> absolutely not a cause for panic at this point. >> and we wish this man well in his recovery. >> and we'll be following it closely. >> thanks, guys. now, to the life-or-death moment caught on tape for a little girl. she fell into a pool. her frantic mom called 911. and the officer who responded had no idea his efforts to save the girl were being captured on his audio recorder. abc's cecilia vega with more, now, on the moment this officer knew the 4-year-old would be okay. >> reporter: a chilling 911 call. >> your daughter is 4-year-olds old and isn't breathing? >> she's not breathing. she's all blue. please hurry. >> reporter: a mother who found her daughter not breathing in the family pool. >> i ran out towards the pool. she was completely lifeless and blue. >> reporter: sara villasenor had made a quick trip to the bathroom. she was gone for less than two minutes. in that time, her daughter, nina, managed to take off her life jacket and floaties. >> there was no struggle. no splashing. no sound. nothing. she started sinking down to the bottom.

>> reporter: when costa mesa police officer matt olin arrived on the scene, he thought it was too late. the fear in his voice, captured by the recorder he wears. >> come on, nina. come on, nina. i was doing cpr for about a minute. and at that point, i still wasn't getting any response from her. >> reporter: she finally did respond. >> there you go. there you go. just got her started to breathing. >> reporter: drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children 4 and under. and most of those drownings take place in home swimming pools just like this one. on average, that's about 400 children a year. a sober warning, reminding parents to never take their eyes off a child near water. is there a lesson in this for other people and other families? >> if you're not within an arm's reach, take them out. be that paranoid mom whatever you have to do. >> reporter: wise words from a grateful mom to parents everywhere. for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news.

i'm certain, much better than being a fugitive. >> reporter: the 55-year-old california fire battalion chief is suspected of murdering his fiancee, 26-year-old sarah douglas, then going on the run. >> he's the chief. he is supposed to be the one that helps people. >> reporter: douglas' sister says the haunting phone call may have caught her final moments. >> she screams. blood-curdling screams. and the phone was dead. >> reporter: when the sister went to the home several hours later, she says she found douglas facedown, blood everywhere. she phoned her mother with the news. >> mom, she's dead. she's in there and cold. he's gone. and he killed her. >> reporter: perhaps one of the strongest clues so far, fleming's car, a fire department vehicle, abandoned in a nearby area. >> it was reported that the neighbors saw him cleaning his truck and packing it before the homicide. >> reporter: but there's disappointment, as the canine and aerial search detects no hint of this fire chief now on the lam. he was a 24-year veteran of the force.
