one eyewitness saying as fans were trampled, it was like a herd of elephants running at us. chaos at the mgm grand in las vegas overnight after floyd mayweather defeated marcos maidana in a 12-round match. [ screaming ] crowds stampeding out of control trampling each other in the lobby. initial reports of gunshots sent crowds scrambling to take cover in restaurants and kitchens. bystanders wheeled out on gurneys. the supposed gunshots turned out to be the sound of metal detectors toppled over in the mass confusion, according to local officials. all of this in reaction to the floyd mayweather high-profile fight with marcos maidana. >> i wanted to give the fans their money's worth. i wanted to give people on pay-per-view their money's worth, so that's what i went out there and did tonight. we fought. we fought. and he was a -- he's a hell of a competitor. >> reporter: mayweather was favored to win this fight, but maidana came out swinging from the first bell giving mayweather one of the toughest fights in his 16-year professional career.

mayweather even suffering a bad cut but manages to hold on to his undefeated streak. the judges call the close fight for mayweather. now at a perfect 46-0. adding to the tension, the glove maidana wanted to use wasn't allowed. a ruling coming down just hours before the fight. it didn't have enough padding. both men are already buzzing about a rematch. >> a lot of money at stake. >> sure is. >> thank you, reena. >> yeah, thanks, reena. well, this morning the l.a. clippers are writing their own storybook ending. last night's come-from-behind victory against the golden state warriors, just what the team needed to put the scandalous last two weeks behind them. their victories overshadowed by the racist comments of team owner donald sterling, and as they head to the western conference semifinals, there will be a new man in charge of the team. abc's ryan smith is in los angeles with more. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. with controversy swirling around donald sterling and his wife giving her first comments about the nba's decision to ban

while v. stiviano taking a break from her shenanigans friday sitting down with an exclusive interview with barbara walters. >> i'm giving him the advice that he should apologize to the nation, to the world for his racist remarks. >> reporter: this, as the nba announced plans to appoint a ceo to run the day-to-day operations of the team while sterling's case is being resolved. sterling's wife, shelly sterling, who attended the game last night told abc news in a statement that she looks forward to working with the nba to bring in executives quote of the utmost character, proven excellence, and a commitment to promoting equality and inclusiveness. but once the players stepped on the court, the game, not racial controversy, took the spotlight. two minutes left in the game. clipper nation on its feet. this is the moment they've been waiting for. >> they advance to the second round. >> reporter: the nba's feel-good team feeling good about their win. >> just felt it in the time-outs, at halftime. we just knew it wasn't time for

comes from members of pope francis' newly formed sexual abuse advisory committee. officials say they will develop, quote, clear and effective protocols to hold people bishops and other church members accountable if they fail to report allegations or to protect children from pedophile priests. and take a look at this surveillance video of a suspected serial arsonist. it's in oregon. portland fire officials believe that he set a half dozen fires within a few hours of each other. fire crews got to this home and were able to put out this blaze. one of the fires was set across the street from a fire station. it was empty since all the firefighters were responding to the other reports of fires. and this morning we are hearing for the first time from the family of the teenage girl in connecticut who was fatally stabbed at her high school on the day of her prom. in a statement to police, the family of maren sanchez thanked the committee for the support that they have received saying in parts, "our hearts are forever broken by the loss of our maren. the outpouring of compassion, support and love from the community she touched during her

life and in her passing have moved us deeply." and the message comes one day after maren's alleged killer, 16-year-old christopher plaskon, seen here, faced a judge in adult court where he was charged with her murder. and some terrifying moments at a convenience store in florida. watch a surveillance camera capture the moment that a bmw comes barreling through the front door. the car takes out everything in its path before coming to a stop eventually in front of the beverage case at the back of the store. one worker says that he jumped out of the way just seconds before the crash. actually you don't see him there but i believe him. authorities are not sure what exactly caused the accident. nobody inside, thankfully, was hurt. and finally, they say it takes a village to raise a child. well, in this case, it took almost a village and the local police to rescue some adorable baby ducklings in evansville, indiana, home of don mattingly, former yankee great. police sergeant brian hildebrand who was wearing a body camera teamed up with some passing motorists to help extricate the

nine baby ducklings who fell into the sewer. the mother duck watched from a distance. a plumber finally went down into the drain and brought those ducklings out gently placing them inside a cardboard box one by one. the ducklings and mom were reunited and were safely relocated. ♪ reunited and it feels so good ♪ >> look at the talented ron claiborne. >> you know, you never know what he's going to do. you never know. >> you know, i don't know. that's pretty -- >> that's the dangerous part. that's what worries me. >> that was the first time i have ever sung on national tv and probably the last time. >> it wasn't too bad. >> actually -- >> unless the public demands it. which i'll do it again next week. >> i'm sure they will. >> i'm sure i will be. as we await the public uproar, we'll go on to other news. overnight, president obama employed a little bit of humor as a way to defuse the criticism he's been facing from republicans for not being tough enough with russian president vladimir putin over ukraine.

at the white house correspondents' dinner, mr. obama pointed out that many members of the gop have actually praised putin. >> rudy giuliani said putin is what you call a leader. mike huckabee and sean hannity keep talking about his bare chest, which is kind of weird. >> all right. so let's bring in abc's george stephanopoulos, who will be hosting "this week" later this morning from washington. he was at the big event last night. the president got laughs. does that take the edge off the fact that thus far his administration seems unable to rein putin in here? >> a little bit, but, of course, it doesn't solve the problem in any way, shape, or form. and it's coming at a time when you're seeing dramatic escalation if the last 48 hours. you've got the former ambassador to russia, the united states former ambassador michael mcfaul saying this is real. this is war. they're even starting to rethink whether putin really does want to go into ukraine with a big way with troops. although their calculation had

been that he simply wanted to destabilize the area. the problem for the administration is military options are off the table. not clear that those would work. and it's tough to get a consensus across europe about the kind of sanctions that might deter vladimir putin. so they are a bit hamstrung right now. but the united states and the president especially is determined not to put the united states in the middle of a war over ukraine. >> it's such a thorny problem and as you say, humor is not going to make it go away. george, by the way, has a big show this morning with much more on the situation on ukraine. that's later this morning on "this week" right here on abc. george, thanks again. and, bianna, over to you. we're going to turn to the brazen teen accused of hacking into his high school's computers to change not only his grades but those of some other students as well in return for money. abc's michelle franzen has the story. >> reporter: a senior high school student in miami-dade county is under house arrest this morning, accused of hacking his way to a higher gpa. >> you've been arrested on four counts of offenses against intellectual property.

>> reporter: jose bautista faces a total of eight felony counts after allegedly hacking into a school compute story boost his grade. >> the lengths he went to was pretty crazy. >> there have been whispers going around over the last week or so. more and more information started to come out. and then we saw that he was arrested. >> reporter: a school spokesman said this was an isolated incident. but because of the ongoing investigation, those details cannot be shared at this time. >> my guess is not only will he not graduate with his class, he may not see unsecured daylight for quite a number of years. >> reporter: in a bond hearing on friday, bautista's public defender argued the prosecution is overcharging the teen. >> there's no legal basis for four counts of either of the charges. >> reporter: cops say while they've seen cheating students before, bautista's alleged scheme makes ferris bueller's playbook look more like child's play. >> i've got it right here in front of me. time for a check of the weather and over to julie durda from our miami station wplg is with us again. good morning, julie. >> good morning, you two. and good morning, america. we'll start off with a live look from boston where we're seeing partly cloudy skies in place. and there will be a pocket of some spotty showers. overall, not a bad start to this sunday. but what we're noticing more than anything is an area of low pressure. that's going to sweep through the northeast with the cold fortunate attached to it. just bringing spotty showers. more than anything you're going to notice gusty winds across parts of the northeast. temperatures still stay nice and mild. in the 50s and 60s. we are expecting warmer conditions across the southern half of the united states. and oklahoma city could be dealing with a record today. the actual record is 93 degrees. we're forecasting 96. that's not the only place dealing with record heat. we are going to see the very hot and dry conditions across the northern portions of texas. 92 degrees in dallas. this is anywhere between 10 to 20 degrees above where we should be this time of year. look at phoenix, checking in with a temperature of 102. we've got temperatures in the 90s for las vegas. that's a look at the forecast from coast to coast.

cross-examination. well, now he's mounting a defense he hopes will show that the murder was an accident. abc's matt gutman is back outside the courthouse in pretoria, south africa, with the latest. matt? >> reporter: good morning, dan and bianna. sources close to the defense tell us that oscar pistorius has spent the past two weeks resting and recuperating, that after being mauled in cross-examination by the lead prosecutor. and while it may seem grim for the blade runner, the defense team says that it has 2 weeks and up to 11 witnesses to try to convince the judge that this was a tragic mistake, not murder. once again tomorrow, oscar pistorius will stride into court sitting on that hard bench to resume the fight of his life. he was pummeled in cross-examination and his case battered last month by the prosecution. >> say, yes, i shot and killed reeva steenkamp. >> i did, my lady. >> reporter: this morning, sources close to the defense tell abc news that oscar pistorius spent weeks recuperating with his family,

even taking a short trip with them to the family farm. in april towards the end of prosecutor gerrie nel's cross-examination, the olympian seemed dazed on the stand. >> my lady, i'm getting confused. >> reporter: even confused about what he said to his model girlfriend reeva in the minutes before he shot her in his bathroom last year. >> if you are tired and the reasons you're making all these mistakes is because you're tired, you must say so. >> reporter: but prosecutor nel known here as the bull terrier sinking his teeth into the blade runner. >> if somebody would say that you whispered, that person would be lying. am i right? >> that's right, my lady. >> you know who that person is? because somebody said it. >> no, my lady. >> it's you. >> if he can have a neighbor come in and give a different account of the story, an account that actually matches oscar pistorius' story, it could really bolster his credibility. >> reporter: indeed, the defense team says it has as many as 11 witnesses to call.

dealing with some storms tomorrow but temperatures will be mild in the 60s. the northeast still nice and comfortable in the 60s and then you can see in the southern half we will see temperatures in the 80s. let's take a look at what's happening in the pacific northwest where we are going to see some showers moving in along this frontal boundary locally anywhere between 1 and 2 inches of rain. it will be later in the week and this is what we're concerned about. so we talked about very warm, humid condition as cross the central portions of the united states. possibly record heat today for parts of oklahoma, well, a storm system will start to move in later this week and once you collide cold arctic air to very warm humid air, there's that possibility some strong to severe weather. that's right. so our main concern going into the middle part of this workweek will be anywhere from oklahoma all the way up towards parts. of the great plains and in towards the midwest for the possibility of severe weather.
