good tuesday morning. we begin with the mounting international pressure to free hundreds of girls held captive in nigeria. >> there is added urgency now that the alleged kidnapper has vowed to sell the girls. tahman bradley has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, the united states stands ready to assist nigeria. the situation would require a military or cia operation. from the streets of nigeria, to los angeles. >> bring back our girls. >> reporter: outrage over the horrific crime is growing. on social media, the #bringbookourgirls has gone viral. celebrities are joining the chorus of millions. about 50 of the more than 300 abducted girls managed to escape. the girls, age 15 to 18 years old, were taken from their school in the middle of the night and loaded on a truck, all because they wanted to go to school.

reporter alexis okeolo, spoke to one. >> these girls are heroes. >> reporter: this is the man behind the terror. boko haran. i took your girls. they are our slaves, he said. i will sell them in the market. some of the girls may have been shipped across the border to neighboring countries and sold into marriage. for the parents of those still missing, this is an awful nightmare. >> the hope of finding our daughters lies in the hands of the government. and the security. on our own, we cannot do anything. >> reporter: the white house says the u.s. will help. but despite the nigerian president's promise to do everything to find the girls, the u.s. has not been asked to help. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> all right, tahman. breaking news in southern california overnight. a stretch of major freeway shut down following a destructive bridge fire. >> portions of the bridge collapsed after going up in

flames. traffic came to a halt, as debris came crashing down on interstate 15, the main road between l.a. and las vegas. >> the 15 is expected to be closed for two days. it's suspected that a worker started that fire with a blowtorch. that deadly wildfire across oklahoma is 70% contained this morning. one man was killed. at least six homes completely destroyed. and there was a hidden danger lurking in one house. the a fire caused bullets to explode. a firefighter was injured after he was hit by shrapnel. >> that's when the ammunition started cooking off. i took two to the chest and one to the head. >> as you can see, that firefighter is okay. crews are facing tougher conditions today. temperatures are expected to hit the triple digits. in ukraine, more violence ahead of an emotionally charged holiday.

some insurgents have been killed along with several soldiers. the government set up roadblocks along the capital of kiev, ahead of the holiday celebrating russian nationalism that may bring people out into the streets. now, to south africa, where testimony the resuming at the murder trial of oscar pistorius, with more defense witnesses taking the stand. a neighbor and friend of pistorius testified that his emotional state just after he shot his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. the testimony was supposed to reinforce the theory that pistorius shot steenkamp, believing she was an intruder. communication problems turned for christopher dorner. a snippet of unreleased video that shows dorner's truck approaching an intersection and a flash of light. dorner killed four people before he killed himself in a burning cabin where he was holed up. we know the reason the air traffic criminal system

malfunctioned last week. a 2 spy plane. the computers were not able to process the flight plan. and the software became overwhelmed. a plane carrying a banner crashed into a house in a denver suburb. no one was home at the time. and the pilot was not injured. so, he found a garden hose and tried to put out the flames himself. but he had to back off when the fuel got too hot. he aiming to land in a nearby field but he just couldn't get there. and the eight acrobats hurt in rhode island are doing better. the women have been upgraded to serious condition. investigators say a snapped clip could have caused that accident. but a final determination has not been made. the women were hanging by their hair in a stunt called the human chandelier. the supreme court has ruled that local council meetings can begin with a christian prayer. the justices said prayers were okay, as long as they did not

denigrate nonchristians and did not try to make converts. it started in upstate new york, where most of the prayers mentioned jesus. today marks one year since we first learned about the so-called house of horrors in cleveland. that was where amanda berry, michelle knight and gina dejesus were held for years. ahead of today's anniversary, berry released a statement saying she had grown and has so much to live for. dejesus is learning to drive. and michelle knight's book is out today. she talked to cnn's anderson cooper last night about the first few days in captivity. >> there was a day i screamed until i had no voice. still nobody heard it. and when he hears you scream, he just shoves a sack or a cloth

managed to get it out of the vehicle and open it. >> the 43-year-old mother of four. doctors had to amputate both feet. but she is expected to survive. incredible video from new jersey where a tire suddenly smashed into the windshield of a commuter bus. the injured driver is being called a hero for bringing the bus to a safe stop. the tire came from a car driving the other direction and bounced across the divider before hitting the windshield. an expedition to bring back gold from a steam ship that sank off the coast of south carolina in 1857. showing some big results. it's recovered about 1,000 ounces of gold. it all went down onboard the "ss central america," which sank bringing back gold from california. 425 people died in that wreck. the expedition is the first there since the early '90s. medical news this morning. the fda is questioning whether aspirin should be used to ward off a first heart attack or stroke in certain people. fda experts say major studies do not support a daily aspirin regimen as a preventative

measure for people who have never had cardiovascular problems. and they point to the risk of taking regular aspirin, such as bleeding. the oregon governor, john kitzhaber, put on his medical training to good use last night. he was on his way to dinner when he performed cpr on a woman who was laying on a portland sidewalk. kitzhaber kept it going until paramedics arrived. the woman is believed to have overdosed on heroin. she was taken to the hospital. the first lady's brother is looking for work this morning. craig robinson has been fired by oregon state after six seasons as head basketball coach. >> his team finished no better than fifth in their conference and never made the ncaa tournament. but it's not all bad. the school will pay robinson the $4.2 million he's still owed in his contract. not bad at all. >> yeah. $4.2 million. and you get to sit home. not bad. stanley cup playoffs. the penguins and kings lead their respective series after both winning last night. >> and there were two nba
