the atmosphere is riled up. it was yesterday, it is again today. we had more than 180 severe weather reports. all of the green, large hail. the blue, damaging wind. and five reported tornadoes and some striking images of a land spout. take a look. >> let's go. let's go! >> reporter: churning across the high plains of colorado, an ominous dust-filled landspout. >> it's headed for that barn. >> reporter: one of the stunning images erupting, as severe weather smothers the plains. at least five reported tornadoes. and then, this. huge hail, battering the landscape in oklahoma. some, up to baseball size. from colorado to kansas, hail in some spots, piling up to three inches deep. >> wow. >> reporter: a spectacular scene in denver, as lightning illuminates the mile-high city. and just north of wichita, near 90-mile-per-hour winds, knocking 30 train cars right off the track. >> i was shocked that it was strong enough to blow the train.

>> reporter: all as a second day of severe weather targets more than 50 million people today. so, the good part, if you can call it good, is most of that happened in rural areas. today, the elevated risk, gets to more populated spots in iowa and minnesota. there's a slight risk from texas up to parts of michigan. we will be talking more about the severe weather risks. a little note, washington, d.c. will in the mid-80s today. we'll struggle to get to 60s. i'll talk about what's up with all that. >> thank you, ginger. now, the intensifying hunt for the nearly 300 kidnapped schoolgirls. first lady michelle obama and secretary of state hillary clinton, joining the growing international chorus calling to bring back our girls. abc's martha raddatz staying on this for us, joins us from washington with more. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there's such an outpouring of support for these girls. but for the parents of those schoolgirls, each day that goes by is more difficult than the last.

a moment of silence for nigeria's president this morning. but for the parents returning to the school for the first time, there's little faith in the government. this father wanting the world to know we don't feel nigeria can help get our daughters back. but the world is listening. first lady michelle obama, tweeting this photo. and hillary clinton, giving a strong reaction to our robin roberts. >> it's criminal. it's an act of terrorism. and it really merits the fullest response possible, first and foremost from the government of nigeria. >> reporter: the nigerian government is offering a $300,000 reward. but finding the girls will be an immense challenge. the search will focus in the northern wilderness, a remote swath of forest, more than six times the size of yellowstone

national park. the u.s. is sending a ten-member military team to the capital. specialists in logistics and intelligence. the former head of african command told us drones could be brought in from a base in djibouti, as well as surveillance aircraft. cp-3s that could listen in on cell phone conversations below. >> you could have nigerian security officials aboard those aircraft, listening. so, you've got someone who has the language skills. >> reporter: the most important tool in finding those girls will be human intelligence, people on the ground. and that will have to be up to the nigerians. we have no one there, especially in those remote forests. but there's still a great deal of hope that at least some of these girls will be found. george? >> we have to keep trying. martha, thanks. we're going to turn to the mysterious fire at the florida home of tennis star james blake. four dead bodies found inside the mansion, which burned to the ground wednesday.

police convinced it was a crime. and abc's gio benitez has the latest from miami. >> reporter: this morning, a beautiful mansion at the center of a heinous crime. >> oh, my god. it's so bad. i was walking my dog. and the house just exploded. >> okay, ma'am. listen to me. try to calm down a little bit. >> it's a two-story house, ma'am. you need to go tell the other neighbors. it's a two-story house. oh, my god. >> reporter: police near tampa, florida, said somebody set this ragin' inferno wednesday morning, intentionally. >> we have confirmed there were various fireworks throughout the residence. >> reporter: inside, the bodies of two adults and two teenagers, discovered in their bedrooms. two appear to have upper body trauma. >> at this time, we have confirmed that the residence is being rented by the campbell family. however, we have not been able to positively identify the bodies. >> reporter: for the past two years, the campbell family has rented the posh 7,600-square-foot mansion from

retired tennis star, james blake. according to the tampa tribune, this is the man renting the home, daren campbell. his linkedin pro fail said he was treasurer of tampa's elite carrollwood day school. his children both went there. the police are trying to figure out the motive. while police are not identifying the names of the victims until after autopsy results are released, the campbells have not been heard from since the fire leaving those who knew the family devastated. >> his daughter is beautiful. it's so bad. >> reporter: they confirmed blake owned the house and was renting it out. but most importantly, george, they said he was not in florida yesterday.

let's go to amy with the other top stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with raids across the country, as federal agents fight back against the synthetic drug epidemic. the dea arresting 150 people in 29 states, seizing tens of millions of dollars in assets, while going after suppliers of synthetic marijuana. agents recently identified up to 300 new synthetic drugs. in detroit, a 90-year-old war veteran faces three years behind bars for smuggling drugs for a mexican cartel. he was caught with 228 pounds of cocaine. and a wild scene in houston. a car driving straight through this crowd of people, running for their lives. fortunately no one was hurt. they had gathered near a murder scene. police say the murder suspect's father was behind the wheel. and in washington, six democrats have joined republicans in the house, voting to hold a former irs official in contempt of congress. lois lerner refused to testify about targeting of conservative

groups. she pleaded the fifth. that case will now be sent to the justice department. and new questions about vladimir putin's next move in ukraine. on wednesday, putin claimed russian forces have pulled back from the ukrainian border. but the pentagon says there is no evidence of that. and today, putin oversaw a nuclear exercise conducted by russian forces. an exercise, he says was previously scheduled. and a massive explosion has leveled a hotel in northern syria, being used by government troop there's. a new escalation in the bloody civil war. no official word on casualties. and meanwhile, you have to take a look at this. it was an all-out brawl that erupted on television. look at this. in neighboring jordan. analysts are arguing over the syrian war, which has spread chaos across borders. but literally destroyed that set. that's hard to believe. finally, talk about an unwelcome surprise. a film crew was working off the coast of south africa when this happened. yeah. that's a great white shark.

it's attacking their -- yes, that's an inflatable raft. fortunately for the crew, the shark swam away before they sank. but that's right out of "jaws." you look at it -- on their inflatable raft. yes. thankfully, no one was injured. >> might not want to have an inflatable raft out there. >> i agree. >> just saying. >> a bigger boat. >> amy, thank you. now, to my one-on-one with hillary clinton. i had a chance to sit down with the former secretary of state, at the philanthropy of new york's meeting. where we talked about the global progress of women and girls but first i had a chance to ask her about recent developments in the benghazi investigation. benghazi investigation. are you satisfied with the answers? and are you content with what you know what happened? >> absolutely. of course, there are a lot of reasons why, despite all of the hearings, all of the information

that's been provided, some choose not to be satisfied and choose to continue to move forward. that's their choice. and i do not believe there's any reason for it to continue in this way. but they get to call the shots in the congress. >> and the question i took straight from the audience, were you to run for president in 2016, would you choose elizabeth warren or julio castro as a running mate? >> i've been asked this question many different ways. this is one of the cleverest. i would expect no less. i can only say they're both extraordinary leaders and great political advocates for a lot of what needs to be done in our country. and i admire both of them greatly. >> when i look at your twitter page, you, the last thing you list, is saying you're a glass ceiling cracker.

trapped in a wreck ravaged car 140 feet below a winding colorado road, without food or water. >> she was using every means possible to get out of where she was. >> reporter: using whatever she could find in her car, the single mother of four struggled to send out distress messages, using this placard. writing all 911. jaws of life, and mashing this red and white umbrella. need doctor. hurt and bleeding. and thirsty and hungry. six days, no food or water. >> connie had given her that umbrella because she didn't have one in the car. and she uses that umbrella to write messages. >> i know in my heart that she thought of her four kids. i have to stay alive. i have to get home to my babies. >> reporter: finally, a couple driving by spotted hopkins' car upside-down, in the tangled trees. telling police, they thought the person inside was dead. >> we just happened to look at the right place at the right time. >> if they had waited too much longer, she probably wouldn't be here today. >> reporter: hopkins has a long

crying and crying. >> reporter: it was only this week that yvette van schalkwyk asked the defense to testify after hearing criticism that pistorius had taken acting lessons. over the past two months, doubling over in court, weeping, wretching into a bucket. >> i saw a heartbroken man that's suffering emotionally. he said he accidentally shot her. >> reporter: and the prosecutor, known as the bull terrier here, gerrie nel, bouncing. >> he said to you, i accidentally shot her. you know what his version in court was? he thought he was under attack. and that's why he fired. so, he changed since he spoke to you. >> reporter: earlier, he called out pistorius' histrionics on the stand. mr. pistorius, you're not using your emotional estate as an escape, are you? >> reporter: a different side of those emotions allegedly on display tuesday after proceedings. reeva's friend, kim myers, accusing pistorius of walking up

to her in court and snapping, how do you sleep at night? today, the myers family were in court with family friends, mark bachelor, a soccer star here. their attorney telling abc news, they found it odd that he cries crocodile tears on the stand and then says something like that to kim. pistorius has denied saying anything to myers. and no one else heard it. the trial is really the home stretch right now. what we're seeing is the defense trying to insert a wedge in the prosecution's case by calling to the stand a couple of experts who are re-evaluating the contents in reeva's stomach and the crime scene that night. but the slugfest of the scientists, something of a stalemate. robin, george? let's turn to the latest on jason patric's bitter custody battle. he wants to be a father to the child conceived in vitro with his sperm. the mother says he's a donor with no parental rights. and the two face off in court for a trial that could cause huge changes in our custody laws. abc's cecilia vega has the story. >> reporter: jason patric calls

counterfeiter right now. no one better than me. it's me. >> reporter: he made his fakes in a small town in canada, outside montreal. he says it was relatively easy to copy many of the security features of the real 20s. actually, using the u.s. secret service website as a road map. american currency, not that hard to counterfeit? >> the easiest of them all. >> reporter: step by step, barassa said he found suppliers on the internet, from europe to china, that could provide the same security features. and used a front company to trick this paper mill in germany to produce the unique currency paper, made of cotton and linen, complete with andrew jackson water marks. >> once this is done, the rest is nothing. >> reporter: millions of dollars worth of the fakes went out, he says, before the mounties and the u.s. secret service moved in. >> this was going to affect americans. and it was important to get this right away. get this off the street. get it off the market.

first expected to live a shorter lifespan than their parents. 95% of americans will be overweight or obese in 20 years. the number of type ii diabetes cases among adolescents has skyrocketed. i said, you know, we have to do something about this. >> you hear the word, epidemic, time and time again. that's alarming. >> yes. it's incredibly alarming. and there's a host of reasons behind this epidemic. you know? i think that obviously, you know, since the low-fat craze hit in the 1980s, to take out fat, you have to pump in sugar. people are eating so much sugar. you're supposed to eat six to nine teaspoons a day. that's a safe threshold. but there's hidden sugar in everything. of the 60,000 products at the grocery store, 80% have added sugar. kids are marketed to death from a very early age. 50% of school districts serve junk food for lunch. fast food for lunch.

the kids are getting terrible choices. and the usda promotes agriculture and establishes dietary guidelines. >> you showed michael pollen in that clip, as well, saying the government is subsidizing the epidemic. >> that's right. well, you think about that. they are promoting u.s. agriculture. and we have a perfect example when skim milk came into being and the demand increased, the fat from the skim milk, the dairy farmers needed something to do with it. so, the government started promoting cheese. they're often working at cross purposes. >> there's been some pushback. not surprising. the food industry is pushing back pretty hard. grocery manufacturers say that the portrayal of the food industry is unfair and inaccurate. they've taken steps like moving soda from schools. changing advertising. and promoting school lunch standards. >> i think some steps have been in the right direction. and we certainly applaud michelle obama for bringing

attention to the issue. i think there's a dichotomy in terms of how to solve this problem. some people think it's fine to work with the food industry. and in some cases, positive steps have been made. but just re-engineering currently existing processed food and tinkering with it is not necessarily going to solve this problem. we applaud some of the positive things that have been done. but our experts say, it's like the fox guarding the hen house. they want to maintain the status quo. and they're worried about their bottom line. so, they can make some changes. but we don't think they can make enough. >> and you're also putting out this challenge. ten days without added sugar. >> that's right. the "fed up" challenge, starting monday. we're going to try to get as many people as possible to give up added sugar. >> what does that mean? >> there's some naturally occurring sugars in things like yogurt, plain yogurt. but we're trying to say, you can't have added sugar or artificial sweeteners, which have the same impact on your brain as added sugar.

nothing is ever over. >> no. nobody is ever dead. >> that's true. and, james, you have a chance to play, of course, professor x, the younger character. it was so powerful to see you going head-to-head with each other. the younger version with the older version. >> i've been interested in the classics for a long time. when i took over the role, i never thought we would be in the same movie together. let alone, share a scene together. and my first day was patrick's last day on the shoot. you get that hand over, which i never had in the previous movie. but it feels like a relay. the energy of being the custodian of this wise, empathetic, caring, most priestly character sometimes, has been handed over to this long hair, dressed in '70s gear with a pink psychedelic shirt. you shouldn't do this. this character won't be safe

with me. but it's nice. >> it works. it really works, having the two of you together. ellen, your character, so cool. but so powerful. i know you must appreciate that. >> yeah. so excited to be back. and so excited to play her. older and more fierce. it was great. >> taking no prisoners. i don't want to give away too much. a little twist from the comic book. let's just leave it at that. that caught me off guard, who went back. how do we still care after all those years, lauren, about these characters? they stay with us. >> i think it's two-fold. they were written with complexity. the characters all have flaws. they're all tragic in some way. and they all need to grow. that's the marvel world.

particularly chris claremont. and also, i think we cast them well. i think these actors are the best actors today. and they have grown with the roles. and they make the roles real and human. >> it must be exciting for all of you have have everybody. halle berry. i like the short hair. but to have you all together like that. and you see how the camaraderie you have with one another. that's got to help. >> we shot the film with the future part first. it was like a reunion to begin with. and james did the first day. then, it was the younger characters coming in. being very careful not to say the word old. >> what i want to know is, did you have more fun with the young guys or with, let's say it, the old veterans? >> i have never felt older in my life than being in the trailer parker, which we called the base camp, with these guys because they were running around with

of kids that are going to come over from india. >> it's a great baseball movie. but it's a lot more than that. at its heart, it's really about family. >> i think so. it was a nice opportunity for me to actually play a character that's a little more uplifting. a little more heartwarming than my normal guy on my day job. full disclosure. we're all related here. but it's -- it is. it's about a family. and how you can find family and make family in other relationships that maybe aren't necessarily in blood. as you mentioned, based on this true story, this actually happened to this guy. he went through this -- all of this change in his life. and is still very close with these two boys that he brought over. >> different for you because it gave you your first chance to go to india, which must have been an incredible experience. >> it's eye-opening in every sense of the world. it's a full-on sensory overload. we shot for four weeks in india. and shot during the month of may.

>> that scene you were seeing right there, how hot was it then? >> at the taj mahal. we were outside. it was probably -- it got up to about 120 degrees. there was a day when we lost -- i don't mean, they didn't die. but i mean, a couple of crew members went down, just from the heat. but alan arkin was there. in his 80s. he was a trooper. >> he's so funny. >> he's very funny in the film. and it was great. it was a wonderful experience, not only just to travel but to make the film. >> we told people you were coming on the show. getting all sorts of questions from social media. and one from kimberly. you know what it's going to be about? >> i know kimberly. >> are you going to miss playing don draper? and i just found out. you're the only actor on the show that knows how it's going to end? >> that's what matt says. and i think he maybe was making it a nice pull quote. i know how my character's story ends. i don't know necessarily how the whole show wraps up. and i feel like that's fair.
