broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> good morning. i'm kristen sze. >> we have breaking news out of mexico where a strong earthquake hit the pacific coast, 55 northwest of acapulco, it was just downgraded to a 6.4. it was felt as far away as mexico city, 188 miles away where frightened office workers streamed into the streets as you can see from this picture and away from high-rise buildings. first reports say the quake

lasted as long as 40 seconds. in spite of all that, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. last month a 7.2 quake hit that same region but there were no reports of page damage there either. >> back here fire investigators are trying to figure out the cause of a fire and explosion. an elderly couple killed and their son narrowly escaped. >> still a busy scene. sunnyvale command, department of public safety, also arson task force. they are trying to figure out what caused the fire that killed two people. the deb of this home in sunnyvale mobile home covered up a dark truth. two people died. the hope was they were staying somewhere else that night. the reality came to light when the sun came up. firefighters discovered their bodies several hours later before 7:00 this morning. >> we believe they were near a

bedroom door and hallway. >> flames huge at 2:00 and an explosion blew debris onto a neighbor's roof. firefighters couldn't go in, dousing the home with water from the outside. >> i heard the sirens. i opened the front door and saw flames burning above the trees. i yelled to my husband, it's either carol and paul, my friends that live across from them or dorothy and al. i ran to the corner and found it was dorothy and al. >> investigators believe they never made it out of their home. dorothy's son joey did escape. they say the man in his 50s is mentally challenged. they were longtime residents of a close-knit senior community. >> i don't know what to say. i can't believe they might still be in there. >> people living outside the mobile home community could see the huge flames from far away. this is cell phone video. he just got home to witness the

fire. >> i pray and hope nobody is inside. that's the last thing you want. everything else is replaceable. you just can't replace a life. >> neighbors say al worked as a school crossing guard. as for the investigation here, the santa clara county medical examiner's office is on the scene. their job is to remove the bodies and confirm their identities. reporting live, matt keller, nbc's news. >> thanks very much. in danville police are patrolling every school campus following threats that several people would be killed. one threat found in a graffiti message near charlottewood middle school. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us. amy, police caught somebody. >> they have made one arrest, cheryl. they are still looking for another. police today are at school. they are on campus even though about half the kids are not. they stayed home confirming what officials have been hearing all week, that parents are nervous.

danville police officers greeted students at charlotte on thewood middle school to ease concerns. parents took extra steps to assure their kids. >> she's nervous. normally i just drop her off. this morning i had to drop her off and walk her to class. >> the mental found spray painted on a rock just off campus property last week. >> plan to kill 12 people may 8th. today is may 8th. >> officials don't think it's a credible threat and police said no reason to cancel school or keep kids at home. >> that's been a huge question today. are you having school. should i send my kid. we've been very honest to say that's a family decision. >> at brad wong's house he let his kids decide. two of them are students at charlotte wood. >> i have three. one said he wants to go to school, one wants to stay home. >> a copy cat at john baldwin elementary.

that campus has police officers and administrators keeping watch today. >> fortunately the police caught one of the juveniles who was responsible for one of these copy cat messages. >> reporter: ambassadanda quatt decided to come even though her friends stayed home. >> we thought it was good to not go with a trick. even though there's protection, it is safe. >> the juvenile arrested has been released to his or her parents. they have not released the age or anything about the student. they want to keep it private. that student is accused of doing the copy cat message. they are still looking for the person who did the initial threat. they are encouraging anyone with information to please come forward and talk to danville police and help them find this person. live, amy hollyfield. >> just in, cal fire said it has

fired a battalion chief who was the subject of a policeman hunt. commentator county deputies say 55-year-old orrville flemming stabbed to death his girlfriend, 26-year-old sarah douglas last week. authorities released this new picture of flemming yesterday. they believe he could be in the series, a seri sierras or simi valley. he's known for changing his look a lot and shaving facial here. cal fire terminated him because he's been awol for five days. president obama is about to leave los angeles any minute now headed for san diego before coming to the bay area this afternoon. lets give you a live look from lax right now. this is marine one. we expect he will come out of marine one and get onto "air force one." that will take him to san diego. eventually he'll end up here in the bay area in a couple of

state senate just approved a bill to require smart phones sold in california to come with an anti-theft kill switch. state senator mark leno reintroduced his revised bill this morning after a similar proposal lost by just two votes several weeks ago. changes to the bill give manufacturers more time to comply with the rules. more than half of all robberies in san francisco involve cell phones. that figure climbs to 75% in oakland. the assembly now has to pass that bill before a governor can sign it into law. if your phone was stolen, how far would you go to get it back. a new study found people are willing to shell out big bucks and put themselves in danger. half would pay $500 to get their phone back. a third say they would pay $1,000.
