>> we have construction approaching the richmond-san rafael bridge with early construction eastbound 580. that is now cleared. you can see how empty it is with no traffic pulling toward the toll plaza. over on 101, it is clear and across the golden gate bridge it is getting foggy, look at this, you cannot see beyond the lights as you get closer to the tunnel, visibility is going to be hampered so use the low beams this morning. >> president obama is waking up in the south bay to wrap up the bay area trip and will visit a wal-mart store as we have mentioned trying to highlight an issue but creating controversy over a different issue. katie marzullo is at the san jose fairmont. katie? >> yes, kristen, this is where president obama stayed leaving the hotel in a few hours headed

for the wal-mart in mountain view where he will be greeted by roasts but there were protesters here last night at the hotel, as well. 100, in fact, the ones you usually see wanting the president they step the keystone xl pipeline project. at wal-mart the president will speak of energy efficiency and protesters will meet him there some with energy specific items calling on the president to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and a large group is there to show support for increase in the minimum wage that president obama has recently called for. the employees at the wal-mart are mixed. some are excited the president is coming. at least one employee says the president is missing the point. >> i am upset that president obama doesn't take the time to talk to us and find out what is going on in the store and how we are treated and what we go through each day.

>> the president is scheduled to speak at the wal-mart at 9:55 this morning and wal-mart says he is the first sitting president to visit a store. the protesters are planned for 8:00 a.m. and 9:55 and then will leave california at 10:35 this morning. in san jose international airport for abc7 news. >> the president's schedule has been packed since arriving in san jose yesterday. on thursday he attended two fundraisers for the democratic national committee. the second event was at the fairmont. co-hosted by yahoo c.e.o. marissa mayer and ahlman and a heckler interrupted shout "freedom to ethiopia." >> i want to hear from you. i love you back. you crewed up my ending but that is okay. that's okay. >> and we have free speech in

byrd. he is cleared to return. he grabbed the student's cheeks and slapped him because he did not know the answer to a problem. the administration thought it was best that he be back with the students this morning. >> they said that he served his punishment and it is best for everyone to come become to school and be in class. that is crazy. >> he says that the school is moving his son to another classroom and fremont police say they are still actively investigating the situation. the richmond teach are accused of sexually abusing students is due in court today for a preliminary hearing. he faces more than two dozen charges including kidnapping and 11 counts of lewd acts on a child under 14. the prosecution says that he took 11 and 12-year-old boys from making waves academy on field trips overnight and me

>> defensive back with the 49ers is facing a civil right stemming from an accident in san jose on march 28. the lawsuit was filed by a man whose car was hit by him after another incident involving a bicyclist. santos says he used racial slugs, vulgar language and threatened his 15-year-old son with brass knuckles and has pleaded not guilty. another pedestrian accident at the same intersection where a driver struck and killed a man in february. san francisco police say it happened at 2:30 in the afternoon at sunset avenue. a 20-year old was hit while crossing sunset. show was thrown through the air with scrapes on her face and a possible broken shoulder. the driver, 25 years old, didn't hit the brakes until she was already in the intersection. police say it appears the woman was crossing the street to cash

a bus and the driver did not see her. >> a silicon valley billionaire has been ordered to testify when the trial resumes over access to a san francisco beach. at issue is a private road that leaves to martin's beach south of half moon bay. the road is the only way to access the see excluded beach by land. it was closed down by the owner of the property, the billionaire. the suit filed by a surf foundation said he did not get proper permit to close the road and it is a violation of the california coastal act. >> the california says it is may but for firefighters it feels like august because of the fire danger in california. state fire officials came to the oakland hills yesterday to urge residents to do their part to prevent wildfires. three years of below normal rainfall has left vegetation extremely dry. residents are asked to clear vegetation around their home and have a disaster plan ready. >> be prepared to evacuate early

time this year. that is next week. today, below average, upper 60's to low 70's through the south bay and 73 at los gatos and 74 in gilroy and in santa cruz, 69 degrees today. we will have mid-to-upper 60's for the peninsula and redwood city and mountain view at 69 and 61 at half moon bay a warm spot along the coast and 62 in downtown and 63 in south san francisco and low 60's from the coast to sausalito and upper secretary and low 70's through the north bay and the wine country will be breezy. upper 60's away from the bay shore p line but berkeley and new, a around 66 and live more and wine country at 72 and breezy. most of the neighbors in the low-to-mid 70's. tomorrow morning, mid-40's to low 50's. significantly cooler by ten degrees compared to today. the front is stumbling through the higher elevations and we have a chance of drizzle through 9:00. clearing, then, and breezy

conditions by noon through to saturday. the temperatures do not change much tomorrow. we then jump six to ten degrees on sunday and another ten degrees by tuesday and it looks like we will peak to 80 at the coast with low-to-mid 90's around the bay and inland and it will take some money with the air conditioning to stay cool. >> if you are headed out of the bay area to lake tahoe or sacramento we do have a major accident. right now, though, at home, if you are traveling over the altamont pass, there is drizzle falling in some areas. right now it is heavy. it does lighten up along 580 as we continue along the road, it will take 31 minutes from tracy to dublin and highway 4 is clear at 101 through marin moving along fine. southbound i-5, there is where we have a full closure along i-5 because of a crash involving a

most of it is over the atlamot pass. in the east bay a brand new accident southbound 880, and it does appear to not be blocking any lanes with no delays southbound. there could be nails in the road northbound 680 so be careful driving through that area. hopefully c.h.p. can clear it up. the rest of drive in and out of sunol is just fine. >> 5:31. it is day two of the president's visit to the bay area. today, president obama will visit a wal-mart store in mountain view to highlight renewable energy and will be met by protesters for choosing the world's biggest retailer as a backdrop. katie marzullo is in san jose with more. >> the president has only one item on the agenda and it is not a fundraiser filled with

supporters. when he leaves the fairmont he be met with protesters at the next location and that is the wal-mart store in mountain view. he will give an energy speech with a few new detail on what, exactly, he will be saying. we know he will announce more than 300 private and public sector commitments to create jobs and cut carbon pollution by self ways -- several ways. president to visit the store and this wal-mart just installed solar panels. protesters are taking advantage of the opportunity. some will ask the president to redues greenhouse gas emissions but some employees are mixed, and say they love their jobs and others are not paid enough. >> i lost where i was living. now i am live out of my car. i sleep at a mattress on the

and the nine-year-old student says we burg grabbed his cheeks and slapped him twice because he didn't know the answer to the problem. the teacher difficult noose slapping him. the school is moving his son to another class. fremont police say the investigation is ongoing and nick will have a report at top of the hour. >> police in oakley are detaining a man in connection with a homicide investigation. police were called to a home yesterday afternoon before 4:00. they got there, the officers found the victim on the ground. officers and paramedics tried to save the man but he died at the scene. the person being detained is connected with the case. they have not named the person or said how the victim died. >> police are looking for a plan who used a stolen identity to steal a flatbed trailer. this is a picture of the suspect captured on surveillance video. he got a flatbed rental and

never returned it. skit believes he did the same thing in oakland and southern california. he could be driving a truck or this truck, where a camper shell. if you recognize the suspect or the truck, call petaluma police. >> efren carrillo will not face a formal censure from the colleagues after being acquitted on charges of being a peeping tom after called for him to resign from the fellow supervisor and constituents from the board meeting. the press democrat reports that the chair now has no plans to censure efren carrillo or force him to resign. efren carrillo vowed to stay in office. voters have the option of recalling him. >> it is a year since oakland's police chief left the job and there is still no sign of a permanent chief. interim chief is in charge at the oakland miss department and he took over last year for the chief would lasted two days. prior to that, howard jordan led

the force and it is a year since he stepped down. the mayor says the search is moving along but credit is thing more searching is not needed and the money is better spent recruiting officers not a chief. >> we did a national search and the deadline was april 30 and we have talked to the panel of those to interview. >> the money being spent on the recruitment effort should have been devoted to recruiting officers where we have a shortage. >> part of the expense is a brochure produced to help recruit a new chief. >> a major move is underway for gay and lesbian couples with children. birth certificates could change to reflect the status of same sex parents requiring parents to identify as a mother and one father forcing them to incorrectly identify themselves. there is now a bill to add a category for "parent."

it would go into effect as soon as 2016. >> california could get help with the water shortage problems next year because of mother nature. forecasters with noaa say that there is now a 78 percent chance of el nino by the end of the year when the pacific waters warm up at the equator, a strong el nino means wetter than average winter. in november, forecasters thought there was only 36 percent chance of this being el nino year but the odds have grown each month since. last month, there was 65 percent chance. >> mike, what is interesting the odds for the year? >> the water getting warmer and they forecast it will get warmer, but how warm does it get? if it is weak or moderate there is no correlation between the health winters and that has to be a strong el nino. we will watch that through the summer where it will be bone dry

five miles is our visibility at half moon bay. the ceiling down to 300'. that is what you will find in a lot of areas, clocking hanging low this morning and letting go of drizzle from time to time. if you take bart it is 52 in daly city, and mid-to-upper 50's at the other stations and, again, maybe just a little wet. temperature this morning is running one to six degrees warmer than yesterday because of clouds. patchy drizzle through the commute. now it will be brighter by noon and 58 at coast and 62 around the bay and 68 inland and by 4:00, breezy and brighter and 60 at the coast, upper 60's to low 70's and by 7:00, total sunshine toward the end of the day, grab a coat, though, the breezes make the mid-60's seem cooler for friday activity. >> we are tracking the accident in the east bay as you drive southbound along 880 and this is where we have a crash involving a car that spun out. it is over to the shoulder.

so it is not blocking any lanes, northbound side of traffic from union city to hayward and it could be slow-and-go traffic but you get to dumbarton or san mateo bridges, all at top speed. on the peninsula, the drive on 101 away from sfo to the city top speed and 280, looking clear. at the richmond-san rafael toll plaza, there are clouds over the east bay with construction at castro street to the tolls. it could have cleared early and to san francisco on 101 it is clear but foggy near the golden gate bridge. a local homeowner confront as woman would was impersonating a leasing agent to rip-off renters. it is all caught on camera. the story you will only see on abc7 news.

passengers dead and 180 injured. an ntsb hearing in december focused on mistakes made by the pilot and crew of the south korean airline. the pilot was making the first flight at controls of a boeing 777. >> in south korea, relatives of the victims of a sunken ferry staged a sit in near the presidential palace to protest the government's handling of the tragedy. they sat with portraits of their family members lost in the singing mostly high school students. families are asking for a meeting with president of korea to discuss concerns of the rescue operations much it is three weeks since the accident and 273 bodies have been recovered and 31 are still missing. >> our news cameras were rolling when a landlord confront add woman who was showing her oakland represental home without her approval. this is a story you will only sigh on abc7 news. >> the woman says her eighth said someone changed the lock on the house and was showing it to unsuspecting tenants.

sanchez met the woman at the home posing as a potential renter and says the woman didn't have the keys or any identification. >> interesting to me that it is a convince den before the open house you are here with no key. >> the woman got if her car and drove off and sanchez said the police told her she could not investigate unless they caught her in the act and she took that to heart and hope she has a case to investigate. >> san mateo mayor -- go ahead. >> we will could, behalf to that story. >> a tree trim are accused of killing baby birds said he screwed up. the chronicle reports that the man from bay point is apologizing for what happened and says that as soon as he realized birds were harmed he phoned the international bird rescue in fairfield and officed to pay for the care of the surviving birds. several birds including a protected heron were injured after tree trimmers chopped off branches holding in facts and threw the branches into a wood

chipper. the post office ordered the tree trimming because birds were making a mess on the trucks parked below. some of the birds are protected by state and federal laws. >> in walnut creek pg&e agreed not to cut down any trees or contact homeowners about removing trees for six months. in return the city not sue the utility. the agreement calls for pg&e and the city to fine a solution to cut down 735 trees to allow better access to the natural gas pipelines. it utility has to deal with trees from eureka to bakersfield and other cities we -- program. >> white house is now solar powered. the installation of american-made solar panels is part of a retrofitting to improve the overall negative efficientive the building.

other improvements include installing updated willing controls and variable speed fans. white house officials say the project should pay for itself in energy savings over the next eight years. the white house has solar panels before but what did you find out? >> they were thermal if you were heating water. president carter put them on in april of 1977 and reagan got rid of them and they ended up in a small college in maine, i believe, and in a warehouse like in "raid others of the lost ark." but they are still using them and china is big on that. 80 percent of the chinese people don't have hot water so they put that in. >> folks you get all the information you need along with the forecast all in one package.
