the plains, midwest hit by damaging winds, flooding, tornadoes. ginger zee on it all. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to everybody. the atmosphere got all aggressive again, especially in pockets of minnesota, down to even texas. around dallas. more than 70 severe storm reports, including seven reported tornadoes, which we're going to bring you close to, right now. >> got a large tornado on the ground. >> reporter: this menacing tornado in minnesota, along with six others, reported from missouri to colorado, tearing through the plains. >> just missed a big barn and house and everything. no more than a couple hundred yards. >> reporter: severe storms, mowing down power lines and roofs, as far as texas. >> it was bad. i mean, people were worried. people were running to the back. >> reporter: up to five inches of rain falling very quickly, just outside dallas. forcing an emotional rescue. crews pulling five boys out of a swollen and raging creek. >> back up. back up for us. >> they were moving so fast. at that curve there, holding on

to a branch or something. >> reporter: in lakeville, minnesota, shoppers scrambling, as high winds inhaled the door off this walmart. >> it sucked it right off. sucked the door off the front of the building. brought it down here. >> reporter: in southern illinois, rain falling at a rate of an inch per hour overnight, with winds gusting close to 60. and a close call in joshua, texas. >> it really scared me. she's only a month and a half. >> reporter: kelsey and her newborn daughter, inside the mobile home when the high winds tore it to shreds. little alexis suffering only a scratch on her nose. and yes, there is a threat today. the severe weather risk area stretches from indianapolis all the way south through parts of arkansas, mississippi and back through almost the same parts of texas. this would be this afternoon and evening. usually kicks up after 3:00 p.m., you guys. until 7:00, 8:00 p.m., that's the heart of it that you need to be on alert if you're in the orange. >> that's a big slice of the country.

thank you. we're going to turn to a growing scandal at v.a. hospitals, after at least 40 veterans died while waiting to see doctors at a v.a. facility in phoenix. there are new charges this morning about a possible cover-up. and new questions about the future of the official in charge of veterans affairs. that secretary facing calls to resign. >> reporter: he sure is, george. the allegations here are explosive. not only have veterans died waiting for medical care. but that the v.a. hospital in phoenix was allegedly covering up just how long vets were waiting by keeping and then destroying a secret waiting list. now you have general shinseki very much in the hot seat. fixing the backlog of medical claims was to be one of his top priorities, if not the top priority. he's facing calls from republican senators to resign. and more significantly, the american legion, one of the most influential veterans groups in the country is saying it is time for him to go because he is responsible for what they called bureaucratic incompetence and failed leadership.

>> that's a powerful group. but the white house and secretary shinseky both digging in. >> reporter: that's right. we heard late yesterday from the white house, saying the president has complete confidence in shinseki. and he has made tremendous progress. that's the words the white house used in dealing with the backlog of medical claims. of course, this allegation of a cover-up puts a lot of that in question. >> it sure does. we're going to have a lot more on sunday on "this week." and martha raddatz has an exclusive interview with defense secretary chuck hagel. >> all right, george. to the growing tensions with russia and the massive show of military might this morning similar to the soviet days. a huge military parade, as president vladimir putin arrived in crimea weeks after it became part of russia again. abc's terry moran is right there in crimea with the story. good morning to you, terry. >> reporter: good morning. president putin has just arrived in this historic russian naval port. until a couple of weeks ago, it was part of ukraine, now claimed by russia. this is a day of extraordinary

personal triumph for putin, in the face of western sanctions and criticism. he is taking to what amounts to a defiant victory lap. like a conquering hero from another age, vladimir putin toured the harbor of this city, bask eving in theed a ration of this pro-russian crowd. it began this morning in moscow. putin flanked by political deputies had a show of military might that echoed soviet displays during the cold war. 11,000 troops, 150 military vehicles and missiles, 70 aircraft roaring overhead. "we will protect russia, its glorious history and first and foremost protect our homeland,"

he told the adoring crowd. he is riding sky high right now. but for all the chest-thumping and defiance, he's stepped back from the armed forces, pro-russian separatists. they have called for a vote on sunday, and putin called for it to be canceled. he says he pulled back troops from the border though u.s. officials say they see no sign of it. and other parts of the ukraine with solidly divided, this part is pro-russian. and to the people here, vladimir putin is a hero. >> it's calm there, but there's new reports of violence in other parts of eastern ukraine today. >> thank you so much. let's get to the other top stories this morning with amy robach. good morning, amy. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with new concerns in that search for nearly 300 schoolgirls abducted by militants in nigeria. this morning, u.n. officials are calling for the international

search effort to expand to three neighboring countries, after nigerian government officials indicated for the first time they now believe the girls have been separated and taken out of the country. the first u.s. military experts are there on the ground, aiding in that search effort. republicans on capitol hill are opening an eighth investigation on the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. today democrats are meeting to decide whether to boycott the new investigation, calling it election year politics. and a dramatic scene near seattle. a man drove his car into puget sound, quickly becoming submerged in ten feet of water. complete strangers dove in and helped police officers break through the car window with an axe, pulling man out of the seat belt and pulling him 30 feet to shore. and then performing cpr. this is incredible. he is recovering even though he was underwater for up to eight minutes. growing outrage after police in a small texas town shot and killed a 93-year-old woman. they say she was waving a gun

when they responded to a 911 call at her home. pearly golden, seen here on the right, died of two gunshot wounds. protesters have marched on that police station. and the mayor is recommending the officer be fired. an elementary school in philadelphia is the latest american school accused of trying to cheat to get ahead. a principal and four teachers at kauga elementary are accused of changing answers on student exams to boost their scores. teachers who refused to cheat were allegedly punished. scores have dropped 60% since a recent crackdown. it could be apple's biggest deal yet. the company is reportedly in talks to pay $3 billion for beats electronics. that's the headphone company co-founded by rap star, dr. dre. the deal would include beats music streaming service and would make dr. dre the world's richest rapper. finally, this really is one whale of a tale. can you guess what's coming next? a humpback became trapped in fishing lines off australia. look at what happened when a local fisherman intervened.

he grabbed his knife, he jumped right into the water. at first, the whale tried to swim away and escape. but the fisherman, joe, swam even closer. he was able to cut the rope around this baby whale. his tail was caught and set it free. and joe called it the best feeling he will ever have. >> i love joe. >> joe did a great job there. >> free willy, free willy. >> yeah. >> thanks, amy. we're going to turn to the l.a. clippers controversy. embattled owner donald sterling is sounding off in a new recording. saying he's not a racist, can't be forced to sell his team. abc's ryan smith has all the latest. >> reporter: for the first time since his racist rant leaked two weeks ago today, l.a. clippers owner donald sterling is heard answering the question, is he a racist? >> you think i have anything in the world but love for everybody? you don't think that. you know i'm not a racist. >> reporter: listening to sterling, ironically on another

taped conversation with an unidentified friend. and released by radar online, explains how he can't be a racist in the business of the nba. >> how can you be in this business and be a racist? do you think i tell the coach to get white players? or to get the best player he can get? >> reporter: and as defiant as ever when it comes to keeping his team. >> you can't force someone to sell property in america. >> reporter: sterling takes on one of his biggest critics, after his rant to his then-assistant v. stiviano, seemingly stemming from this picture she took with magic johnson. >> it bothers me a lot if you want to broadcast you're associating with black people. >> reporter: johnson's response was swift and firm. >> he's got to give up the team. >> it breaks my heart that magic johnson, a guy that i respect so much, wouldn't stand up and say, well, let's get the facts. let's get him and talk to him. >> reporter: and while sterling speaks on race, his wife, shelly, through her attorney, is staking her claim as co-owner of the team and sending a message

to the nba. >> any suggestion that she would be involuntarily ridden out of town or have her property seized by the nba, it's not going to happen. >> reporter: something that according to clippers coach doc rivers, may not sit well with her own team. >> i guarantee every person would not be onboard with that. whether i would or not, i'm not going to say. >> reporter: donald sterling said growing up in east l.a. and being class president of a diverse high school there, along with his jewish background should mean that, quote, people must have a good feeling about me on matters of race. that's what he said on the tape. as for the team, they face off against the oklahoma thunder tonight in the playoffs, hoping to put this latest distraction behind them. george, lara. >> that can't be easy. this is going to be a long fight. >> no kidding. thank you george and ryan. now, we turn to a new study that could have parents thinking twice about what they feed their kids. it shows how much artificial food dye there is in some popular foods. dyes that some doctors and parents say can affect your children's behavior.

and here more with that is abc's chief health and medical editor, dr. richard besser. dr. b., why should we as parents or all of us be concerned about artificial food dye? >> for most people artificial food dye isn't going to cause a problem. but for a small group of children and some with behavioral problems, food dyes are going to worsen their behavior. you have no idea if your children is going to be one of those. >> a lot of our viewers are about to pour a bowl of cereal right now. what do parents need to know? how much? how little? what do we need to know? >> yeah, well, start -- definitely. look at your breakfast table. a lot of the foods you may be looking at right now. the breakfast cereals. the sweet cereals with bright colors, those are artificial dyes. processed cakes, some breakfast bars. they have artificial dyes. and hopefully nothing you have at breakfast, candy and sodas. a lot have dyes in them. >> like the skittles i ate last night probably should be taken -- >> exactly. >> taken seriously. all right. should parents blanket-avoid these foods or be more cautious?

>> there's things you can do. look at the food. if it's not a color you find in nature, odds are, it's artificial. so, read the label. if you see a color followed by a number. blue-1, red-40, yellow-6. that means it's an artificial dye. if you want to avoid those dyes, avoid those. i'm as concerned about the sugar in there, as well. artificial dyes go with a lot of added sugar. >> really important information to know. dr. b., we thank you, as always. we want to say we reached out to the international food information council which said that current research on artificial food colors found them to be safe and not to cause hyperactivity in children. we're going to get the latest on a new initiative to stop a wave of cell phone thefts. california could become the first state in the company that would require software in all smartphones that would shut them down if stolen. neal karlinsky has the story. >> reporter: this morning, state lawmakers are cracking down. trying to make scenes like these

less fremont. thieves ripping them out of people's hands on bussing, subways, even at gunpoint on a city street. a crime so common it even has a name, apple picking. >> i define it as a crime of convenience. if we can end the convenience, we can end the crime. >> reporter: it's not just iphones. a new study reveals smartphones of all kinds have been robbed from one in ten owners. now, a new killswitch bill is closer to becoming law in california. approved thursday by the state senate, it would be the first state in the nation trying to protect people by forcing smartphone makers to preload a so-called killswitch, a way to digitally lock down a phone if it's stolen. tech companies initially bristled at the idea of being told what to do. but this week they said two of the biggest smartphone makers, apple and microsoft at least eased their opposition. >> they don't think it's terrible technology. once you tell them they have to do it, they think it's not such a great idea because of pressure, i believe, from the carrier partners, who want to

trying to figure out exactly how and perhaps most importantly, why, this family died. this morning, a stunning revelation about the family of four found dead inside this burning million-dollar mansion owned by tennis star james blake. this surveillance video obtained by abc news, shows darrin campbell, who lived in the home with his wife and two kids, as he stocked his cart and then purchased $650 worth of fireworks from a shop in tampa bay just three days before the fire. the vice president of phantom fireworks, speaking with us overnight. >> he didn't say anything or do anything to raise any eyebrows in the showroom. the type of products he purchased, the amount he spent was pretty typical. >> reporter: the sheriff's office said fireworks were found throughout the over 7,000-square-foot mansion. and that campbell also purchased several cans of gasoline. >> the fireworks could have been used to ignite and keep the fire aflame. >> reporter: while investigators

believe the fire was set intentionally, we're now learning the fire may not be what killed the family. >> what i can confirm to you is that all four individuals were shot. the firearm was recovered in the residence that was registered to mr. campbell. >> reporter: the house's owner, retired tennis star james blake, renting the home out to darrin campbell and his wife, kim, for the last two years. their children, 19-year-old collin, a high school baseball standout. and 16-year-old megan, a dancer. their grandfather, on their mother's side, is in complete shock. >> i just lost one of my two children and my grandchildren. and i have no reason to believe there was anything wrong. >> reporter: this morning, police say they are not looking for any suspect, though they are not ready to call this a murder/suicide. >> we're not leaving any stone unturned on this case. >> reporter: we should tell you, the medical examiner has not officially identified the

bodies. but the family members shared the terrible news with us, george. >> it is such a sad story. >> so troubling. thank you, gio. we turn to oscar pistorius. his murder trial, wrapping up with the defense preparing to put its final witnesses on the stand. and abc's matt gutman is right there at the courthouse in south africa, covering all of it. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, lara. that's right. the expert on the stand right now is supposed to be the defense's ace witness, blasting away at the prosecution's assertion that there was an argument between reeva and oscar that night. that's until the lead prosecutor began shooting him down, trying to discredit him. even setting up an elaborate display in court to do so. it was one of the most theatrical moments of the trial. for the first time the judge brought down to inspect up close the reconstructed bathroom where oscar pistorius shot reeva steenkamp.

using lasers and spoke to enhance their beams, the prosecution trying to deflect the defense's claim of shoddy policework. >> the crime scene was absolutely not as it should have been. there was books taken out of the bookrack and put on to the blood. >> reporter: that's the defense's ace witness, a top ballistics expert. he would physically re-enact the shooting. the first bullet hitting reeva's hip. the next one, in the arm. >> collapse down, after the first shot. >> reporter: making the point that reeva wasn't in a defensive position when shot, suggesting there was no fiery argument between what was then south africa's "it" couple before the shooting. starting his testimony yesterday, he is a ballistic expert of seemingly unassailable authority, until gerrie nel began to assail him. >> the question is have you furnished the defense with a report of this? >> i think i answered the question. >> reporter: now known as the bull terrier, accusing him of unethically consulting with

good morning. i'm kristen sze. president obama is preparing to speak about energy efficiency at a walmart in mountain view in the next hour before he wraps up his two-day visit to the bay area. mike nicco has the forecast for mother's day. >> increase in sunshine, drizzle is over, temperatures below average, a lot of 60s until you get inland, low to mid-70s there. the accuweather seven-day forecast, breezy, sunny, mild temperatures about the similar, calmer at about 5 to 10 degrees warmer for mother's day. near record heat next week. leyla? a crash in livermore is blocking a lane west bound on 580 coming up to the boulevard. this is slow and go to the dublin interchange, bumper-to-bumper traffic, but eases up through castro valley.
