again it's been a breezy week all day and today out of the northwest, today gusts to 23 miles per hour, half moon bay, elsewhere, it's calm in hayward and napa, the airport, anywhere from 12-15 miles per hour and it will be a windy day today at the beaches. with temperatures just in the upper 50s, that's the end of that. the heat comes in tomorrow. plenty of 70s north and south bay, 80s still far-reaching in the valley. they'll be with us tomorrow for mother's day and a big warm-up,

katy? >> breaking news out of the east bay, two suspects are in custody of a a robbery led to a high-speed chase and a police chooting around 1:30 a.m. at a seven 11. police say one of the suspects was shot by an officer who had responded to the scene. the other suspect took off in a vehicle leading police on a high-speed chase. the chase ended when the suspect crashed on industrial avenue off highway 92 in hayward. both suspects were taken to the hospital. a small plane crashed shortly after landing last night at manetta-san jose international airport. the single-engine plane's landing gear collapsed. none of the three people on board was hurt. the runway had to be closed during the response, but later reopened. airport officials say commercial flights were not affected. a cal football player is facing serious allegations this morning. and he's already been suspended from the team. demaria drew is accused of

attacking man and his dog. abc7 news anchor ama dates has the story. >> i'm shocked to find out that you know, that he's in jail. that's crazy. >> berkeley track athlete, kayla taylor is talking about her good friend on the football team, 20-year-old safety demariy drew from livermore, arrested after an incident tuesday. it happened on bancroft way in the south campus area. >> it was reported that the incident occurred during a fundraising event. so there were students in the area for that event. >> the victim told police he got into an altercation. and the suspect, drew, kicked his dog and punched him in the face repeatedly. taylor says that's not the friend she knows. saying drew is a great person. the athletics department has issued a statement saying they are tracking the case and cooperating fully with the berkeley police department. drew has been suspended indefinitely from the team, pending further information. >> i honestly think that we just have to be careful as student athletes in what we do. because honestly, we're under a

microscope all the time. >> the cal football problem has had problems with players before. just last year, two team members got into a locker room fight that sent one player to the hospital. ama dates, abc7 news. we spoke withdrew's attorney who says the dog may have attacked his client. he also says the focus right now is getting drew out of jail. a basketball player from the bay area has been kicked off the university of oregon team because of a sexual assault investigation. dominick artist graduated from solesian high school in richmond. he and two other players have not been charged with a crime, but the head coach said the decision to suspend all three is in the best interests of the school. a woman has claimed several players forced her to have sex during a house party. an 11-month-old stockton girl severely abused in march has died. the girl's foster father, 37-year-old paul todeski is being held at san joaquin county jail on child abuse charges and

may now be charged with homicide. he was arrested after two weeks. the baby girl was airlifted from stom stockton to children's hospital in oakland. she suffered 13 broken ribs, a broken collar bone and a brain injury. a subcontractor has been fined for its role in the massive fire at a construction site in san francisco in march. the san francisco fire department reports says sparks from wheldon work near the roof likely started the fire that destroyed a 16-story prmt building in mission bay. the subcontractor is not named by damage is estimated to be $40 million. abc7 news has uncovered more about a woman accused of an elaborate rental rip-off scheme. we're learning the woman has an extensive arrest record. abc7 news reporter allen wong has the latest on the story only on abc7 news. >> i wanted to see your license number and make sure that we have all of that. >> no problem.

>> yeah. and then do you have an i.d. on you? >> manuel asanchez caught this woman trying to rent out heroicland home illegally. a prospective renter contacted sanchez after the woman asked for the deposit in the form of a blank money order. >> he recognized this woman? >> yes. >> how do you know her? >> she is a lady who was trying to scam me for money on a rental in oakland. >> this is another potential victim who says the woman tried to rent her the same house. it didn't work, but now, there's more to worry about. >> the lady, whoever she is, has pretty much all of my paperwork. the copies of my social, my brother's i.d.s, pay stub, she knows where i live, where i work. so it's pretty scary. >> what makes it more scary is that police who identified the woman as 33-year-old kayena satterfield of oakland has been arrested for fraud all over the bay area. >> do you recognize this woman? >> i do. >> detective joseph bocce of the

daley city police department said he arrested satterfield several times for fraud in 2012. he says she got caught returning stolen goods to stores that refunded her in the form of gift cards she later sold. >> she was able to con them into believing she was a legitimate customer making a return. >> bocce worked with corporate loss prevention investigators who say in two years, satterfield swindled marshall's home goods and t.j. maxx out of $120,000, and they had her arrested in four bay area counties. >> they assigned the bay area northern california corporate investigators for their business. to do this extensive investigation. >> detective joseph bocce says san mateo county will likely revoke satterfield's probation and issue an arrest warrant. meanwhile, the alameda county d.a. is looking into whether satterfield committed rental fraud and how many people she may have victimized. there are red flags to watch

for when renting a home. a lot of scam artists ask for the deposit or first month's rent in the form of a money order or a cashier's check and they may ask you to write it out to somebody else. another warning sign, if you're told to mail that money to an address that you're not familiar with. and oftentimes the rent is below the market average. basically, too good to be true. a business man in san francisco's mission district is the target of hate speech spray-painted on several properties he owns. he says this isn't the first time protesters have focused anger on him, saying he is partly responsible for the gentrification of their neighborhood. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has both sides. story. >> this is some of the graffiti covering the front window of new upscale grocery local mission market. the word "die" was painted outside local corner eatery. two other businesses were also tagged with hate speech. all of them owned by uron millgrim. >> they start their day by cleaning hateful speech off of

the windows, a tough way to start the day. >> one group has protested the businesses before. >> one fancy restaurant like his comes to the neighborhood, it means that not only does it drive up rents, people get displaced. >> but the alliance of californians for community empowerment says the graffiti is not theirs. >> that kind of graffiti does not help the situation. >> the group does accuse millgrim of discrimination, turning away large groups of people of color away twice in the past. >> last week i was part of a group of six white people who were easily accommodated in the restaurant. >> millgrim denies the claim and says he lives in the mission and employs a diverse staff. >> we don't discriminate. every day we open the doors for everybody. >> the community group demands millgrim and his staff take sensitivity training or face more protests. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. happening today, hospital workers and community members will come together in an effort

to save an east bay hospital. a public meeting will be held this morning at doctors medical center in san pablo. nurses, hospital workers and members of the community will discuss the next steps they plan to take to keep the hospital and its emergency department open. the hospital is set to close after voters rejected a parcel tax to fund the hospital. today's meeting gets under way at 10:00. a heads up for drivers this morning, for the next month, the last san francisco exit before the golden gate bridge will be moved. which means if you miss it, you'll be forced to cross the bridge and pay the toll to come back. early tomorrow morning, caltrans cruise will begin shifting traffic to a temporary road to work on the presidio parkway project. drivers will reach the merchant road exit, the last to stay in san francisco, 1,000 feet sooner than expected. work under way on a project to shut down part of interstate 280 over memorial day weekend. southbound lanes will close between downtown san francisco

and pennsylvania avenue, the closure begins next thursday, 9:00 a.m. and should be finished by 5:00 a.m. the following tuesday. thursday to tuesday. northbound lanes will remain open. additional closures will take place over the fourth of july and labor day weekends. so traffic notes to mark on your calendar. and weatherwise, how should we prepare? >> well, it's nice and sunny, you can tell. but we are looking at winds in the upper elevations here is mount tam. you know the camera sits about 1800 feet. we have gusts to 25 miles per hour. so it will be windy again, higher elevations and coast right now, 50s for everyone. 60s and 70s today. the 80s aren't far off and either is the heat. i'll tell you about it when we return. >> thank you, lisa. next? on fire and falling from the sky. the newest information on the search for survivors after a hot air balloon crashes into power lines. and neighborhood complaints about reopening this elementary school.

a judge halts work in the middle of the mas

>> announcer: covering the bay area, this is abc7 news. at 8:13, developing news in virginia police say one body has been recovered following a hot air balloon crash. the search continues for two other people who were on board. the crash happened just before 8:00. eastern time in dozwell, virginia, north of richmond. police say a pilot and two passengers were in the balloon when it hit a power line and caught fire. witnesses say they saw the balloon rapidly rise, they saw two explosions, and then the basket fell from the balloon. the balloon was part of the mid-atlantic balloon festival at

the meadow, scheduled for this weekend. the unidentified remains of 9/11 victims have returned to the world trade center site this morning. here you see the procession of police, firefighters and emergency vehicles. and then a flag-draped casket is lifted from the back of a police truck. there are nearly 8,000 pouchs containing bone fragments being moved from the city medical examiner's office to the new trade center site. they will be kept in a bedrock repos trry 70 feet underground in the new september 11th memorial museum which opens on may 21st. faulty guns forced the san joaquin county sheriffs office to pull all its deputies off the streets four hours on thursday afternoon. the problem started when some new guns were being tested at the range, and two of them wouldn't fire. so instead of risking that happening in the field, they had deputies turn in those guns, all 300 of them. old guns were handed out and

other law enforcement agencies, including stockton police provided protection during the changeover. well take a look at this picture. it was posted by the highway patrol in contra costa county, a little chihuahua somehow ended up on interstate 680 in the median. and certainly needed a little help to get to safety. no word on how the dog got there, how he's doing now. but certainly looked terrified at the time. hopefully now and forever, trusting the highway patrol. a san mateo county judge has stopped the building of a new school on the peninsula, saying increased traffic may put children at risk. it's a big victory for neighbors who sued to stop hoover elementary school in burlingame. abc7 news reporter vic lee reports. >> our worries from the beginning have been the safety of the kids being dropped off. >> joe hagerty is one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. he and the others point to the dangerous narrow streets that front the school.

like summit drive with its blind curves. chris fitzgerald is another neighbor and plaintiff. >> you can see in the neighborhood, there's no sidewalks, and there's windy roads here. >> hoover elementary school, it was built in the 1930s, then shut down in the late '70s because of declining enrollment. but now the district is bulging at the seams and thought reopening the school would accommodate the influx. expensive homes on the hillsborough side line the street across from the school. neighbors sued district last spring, citing the risks to children, the traffic impact of hundreds of cars and the overall effect on the neighborhood. the district said, its own traffic studies showed no safety risk. as the case wound its way through the court, construction continued, including a big new building. but the judge ordered the

district to stop all construction, saying there needed to be an environmental impact report. the decision surprised school officials. >> how can a handful of people prevent a school from opening, these residents bought their houses across the street from the school. it was always intended to be a school. >> superintendant maggie mckisic says all construction will be stopped. but there's been no decision yet on what the district's next move will be. vic lee, abc7 news. the city of burlingame and the town of hillsborough are hosting a community discussion on the school at 9:00 this morning at hillsborough town hall. happening today, san francisco will hold a fair to help young people find summer jobs. the sf summer jobs plus resource fair will give job-seekers ages 16-24 access to workshops and one-on-one coaching. volunteers from local businesses will be on hand to provide resumé advice, practice interview skills and discuss job opportunities. today's fair runs from 10:00

until 4:00 on pier 35 on the embarcadero. happening today, the postal service will be doing more than just delivering mail. postal workers will be picking up donated food. it's part of the annual stamp out hunger food drive. you're encouraged to leave nonperishable food donations by your mailbox. mail carriers will pick up the donations as they make their rounds, the food will be delivered to local charities, which provide it to people in need. we hope you can join us in a walk today, to prevent violence. it's the fifth annual walk hosted by 1,000 mothers to prevent violence in the bay area. hundreds of grieving mothers and family and friends will participate in a three-mile walk at the san leandro marina park. 1,000 mothers was founded by lorraine taylor, who lost her twin sons to gun violence in a drive-by shooting. registration begins in just a little bit at 8:30, at the park on monarch drive in san leandro and the walk gets under way at 10:00. our own abc7 news anchor sheryl

jennings will emcee the event. and it looks like weatherwise, it's shaping up to be nice for them. >> yes. very nice. >> a little breezy later on today. temperatures still, believe it or not, below average today. so i won't be saying that for quite some time. because the week ahead, while you probably heard about the heat we've been advertising, but still today, temperatures will be a little cool in spots, and a little breezy. look at the rain around crescent city and eureka, live doppler 7 hd they're getting some cool weather, but that's going to change for the north coast as well. temperatures cot hit 100 degrees in reading by the middle of the week. and you know what, we won't be far off from triple digits either. by wednesday, the warmest day forecasted. santa cruz right now, wow, it's nice down there temperatures are still cool in the 40s. 49 in gilroy. oakland, good morning, 48 degrees. it's 54 in san francisco. and mount tam, situated above 2500 feet, reporting wind gusts

of 33 miles per hour. so over into our east bay hills as well, 28-mile-per-hour wind gusts, it's 56 by the delta. and 55 in livermore. so very pleasant day today, with temperatures anywhere from a degree to four degrees shy of average. and in particularly here in san jose. going for a high of 71, you should be about 74 today. warmer weather tomorrow, the winds switch around to an offshore component. for mother's day. and we heat up. next week with possible records right on through thursday. so here's a look at the radar and satellite picture. the rain along the north coast is because of this area of low pressure. that's continuing to push east. but as it does, an upper-level high is building in off the coast. and that sets up the tight pressure gradient. so right now, winds verifying very breezy and by 4:00 this afternoon, 41-mile-per-hour wind gusts once again. point reyes, half moon bay not far behind and oakland, it will be breezy for you. in san jose, but here's

tomorrow. where the winds go offshore. and we'll be looking at still a breezy day. but numbers as much as nine to ten degrees warmer than today's readings. with the clouds, along the north coast, truckee could see some showers, otherwise 50 in the northern sierra, mid 60 in yosemite. and along the coast it will be fog-free. and we will look for some very gusty winds there, with temperatures in and around the santa clara valley, pretty nice. 71, 70 in santa cruz. 67 san mateo. with 58 in pacifica. san francisco, about average, 64. and in the north bay, look for a couple of pockets of low 70s from sonoma to calistoga. a cool day at stinson, 59 and more 60s in hayward. 67 in newark. winds up to 20 miles per hour, maybe better than that at times with 69 in fremont. you head out over the hills. here's where temperatures will be just about perfect. with mid 70s. 73 in walnut creek. and the accuweather seven-day forecast, the inland valleys

says her thoughts, prayers and support are with the families of the more than 200 nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by the islamic extremists. mrs. obama calls the kidnapping an unconscionable act. she says the u.s. stands behind nigeria's efforts to bring them back. >> i want you to know that barack has directed our government to do everything possible to support the nigerian government's efforts to find these girls and bring them home. in these girls, barack and i see our own daughters. we see their hopes and their dreams. and we can only imagine the anguish their parents are feeling right now. >> meanwhile, a report by amnesty international says nigeria's military did not respond to warnings that relks were about to attack the town where the girls were ak ducted. the first lady today honoring all mothers ahead of mother's day tomorrow.

rally at fort baker fishing pier where a petition to president obama will be signed. new details on the mid air collision over san pablo bay two weeks ago. the two planes were flying together after an air show when they collided, killing the pilot of a cessna. the other pilot tells federal investigators, he thought he had enough room to pass below the cessna, but he heard a thump and realized the two planes had collided. investigators found that his plane's tail fin had been crushed. the surviving pilot, whose name was not released, was in a korean war show plane and had just completed a photo shoot. after the crash, he continued on to his home base in amador county he said to avoid pop lays lated areas in his damaged plane. a fremont elementary school teacher remains on administrative leave. police want to take another look that at allegations that he slapped a student in the face. frederick burn is accused of

slapping a 9-year-old and squeezing the boy's face because he didn't know the answer to a math problem. bird had been cleared of the charges and was set to return to the classroom yesterday. when protesters were ready to greet him. but then investigators decided to reopen the case. school officials told bird to stay home. >> when that happens we place the teacher on administrative leave. since he's already on administrative leave, we continue it. >> it's not acceptable, it's not right and i will do everyone i have to do to make sure he doesn't come back. >> school officials say burg admits to patting the boy's face, but not slapping him. they wouldn't say what prompted police to reopen the case. san francisco giants fans who use ferries to get to baseball games are going to catch a break on fares. according to our media partner, the marin journal, ferry rates for baseball fans were set to rise 50 cents in july as part of an annual price hike. but transit officials say they don't want to increase fares mid

of volmer peak. you can see how sunny it is. the winds on the east bay, 25-28 miles per hour and we will have some of the winds translate down to the surface for a breezy afternoon in fairfield. 56 right now. it's 50 in napa. going for a high of 74 today. one of the warmer locations around the bay. your average high should be 74 in san jose. coming in a bit shy. 71. a nice afternoon and tomorrow warmer for everyone for mother's day. anywhere from five to maybe ten degrees warmer as the winds switch to an offshore component. and then after that, we're going to add another ten degrees on monday. and another five to seven on tuesday. could have a heat advisory by tuesday and we could see 90s in downtown san francisco. so locally windy today as the system passes to the north and east of us. it's an upper level high that builds in off the coast and with that the difference between the low and the high, creating the wind and in fact we're not done with it the winds will peak this

afternoon and this evening and then they'll begin to dial back. so 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts point reyes, it will be breezy from oakland to livermore. by tomorrow, look what happens. the little blue arrows coming from the north and east. we'll see the winds, a little bit less on the coast. but it really won't be until the middle of the week when you feel the heat there maybe the 90 around the shoreline. oakland for the week ahead, featuring the warmth with the temperatures in the 70s tomorrow. near 90 by tuesday and wednesday. and livermore, you know it's coming your way. it was hot a couple of weeks ago. but near 100, how about upper 90s by wednesday. tomorrow into the low 80s for mother's day and finally, in san jose, with today, temperatures a little shy of average. tomorrow coming up to near 80. and into the upper 90s, it doesn't really get much better until next friday. so high temperatures today with breezy winds in the east bay valleys. windy along the coast.
