live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. drivers are urged to avoid a major intersection in fremont after a major crash involving a police cruiser and two other cars. good morning, i am kristen sze. cheryl is on assignment. the accident happened at paseo padre parkway and fremont boulevard before 9:00 this morning. it is still closed now while police investigate what happened. we are on the scene. nick? >> this is called an active investigation. it is tragic. they say two people were injured

and taken to the hospital. one is an on-duty police officer for the union city police department. traffic is still backed up down fremont boulevard to highway 880. this is a view from sky 7. we were over the scene minutes after the crash. police say they were called to the intersection of paseo padre parkway and fremont boulevard around 8:30 this morning after getting the 9-1-1 call for a traffic accident involving injuries. when they got here they found three smashed vehicles including that of an on-duty police officer. in the marked vehicle you can see it. the officer and a woman driving the four-door sedan and one of her two children were injured and taken to the hospital. the officer's injuries are not life threatening. he has been released. the female had moderate injuries and remains in the hospital along with the child in the car with her. >> the union city officer was spending to an in progress

burglary in union city at the time of the collision. the officer was driving with lights and sirens act separated at the time of the collision. >> the third vehicle was occupied by a man who stopped at the light at the time of the crash. the force of the impact from the police car and the sedan sent the cars crashing into his van and he was not injured. here at the intersection of paseo padre parkway and fremont, but the area should be clears in about four hours. it remains an active investigation. it is also a "spare the air" day. look at this picture of the east bay hills. today is the start of a long and intense least wave. you can almost see the heat. meteorologist mike nicco has the temperatures. >> the air is cleaner than 24

hours ago but that will change rapidly today, tomorrow, and possibly into wednesday. you can see behind me all the way to oakland with haze hanging there and total sunshine. we will look at the current conditions: everyone in the 70's but oakland is 67 and half moon bay at 62. today is the day we will feel it being warmer. yesterday we had the breeze that kept things in control. today we are anywhere from five to 11 degrees warmer than yesterday and we will not have were of a breeze. today is the beginning. tomorrow and wednesday is when we start to feel the heat everywhere but the coast and we could hit the mid-90's to low 100's so we have the excessive heat watch with the warm nights. you will not sleep well tomorrow night, wednesday night or thursday night. if you were going to head to the beach we have fast moving sneaker waves tomorrow morning through wednesday evening so be careful. >> with the heat there are several major concerns, potential fires, a high profile bicycling race and people's
