we do begin with new details about a violent incident in new hampshire that led to a police officer and another man being killed. >> the explosion was caught on camera by a news helicopter. pieces of the house flying in all directions before the blast. an officer responding to that scene, shot and killed. the officer who died at the fiery scene is 48-year-old steve arkell. he was responding to a report of a domestic disturbance at the house where a father and son lived. then, as the house was burning, a powerful explosion. >> what they think is inside. but oh, my goodness. we should -- all right. scott is over the scene. what we just saw was an explosion in this house. >> reporter: the house that blew up belonged to 86-year-old walter nolan, who was seen being taken to the hospital on a stretcher. his son, michael nolan, is the suspected gunman in officer arkell's death. but michael nolan died at the

scene, either in the fire or because of the explosion. nolan and his father were arguing for an unknown reason. neighbors called walter nolan a friendly guy. but they say they didn't see much of his son. >> he'd come out for five minutes and go back in again. he never talked to anybody. he obviously had issues. >> reporter: as for officer arkell he leaves behind a wife and two teenage daughters. >> i join all granite staters in mourning the loss of brentwood police officer steve arkell, who died tonight doing his job, protecting his community. >> the governor has ordered all flags in new hampshire to be flown at half-staff to honor officer steven arkell. and now to our other big story this morning. widespread drenching rain causing serious fooding and damage overnight. >> a powerful line of storms making its way east. that's spawned tornadoes. and it's dumped several inches of rain. >> abc's tahman bradley has the details. >> reporter: this morning, millions in the heartland are

cleaning up after 48 hours of severe weather. >> big-time tornado, guys. >> reporter: violent tornadoes ripped through nearly a dozen states. >> you guys okay? >> reporter: here's a twister caught on tape in iowa. this dairy farm suffered millions of dollars in damages. a monster tornado in suffolk, nebraska, carving out this massive path of destruction. >> the winds were 70 to 95 to 100 miles per hour. and clearly, today, we saw the extent of what the wind damage did. >> reporter: in portage, indiana, a hail and windstorm downed trees and power lines. crews raced to help those stuck in the dark. >> we're concerned because my husband and i have a lot of meat and stuff in the freezer. >> reporter: overnight in ohio, a torrential downpour caused widespread flooding. >> really got ugly out there. >> reporter: this is a parking lot of a mall, looking more like a river. some people had to be rescued. but no one was hurt. nearly a dozen cars were submerged. in the west, up to three feet of snow in parts of the colorado rockies.

denver's coors field is littered with snow. in california, a different extreme. residents are gearing up for high winds and a heat wave. los angeles is expecting triple digits for thursday. >> i think it's too early to have this hot and this season. >> reporter: red flag warnings are in effect throughout southern california, through at least wednesday because of fire danger. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. as tahman mentioned, a torrid day in southern california. it will feel like summer all along the west coast. milder in the middle of the country. but warming up in the east, as well. breaking news from west virginia where an underground coal mine has collapsed. at least two miners are said to be trapped in the mine which is located in boone county. a rescue operation is under way. that mine is owned by patriot coal corporation. u.s. drones have now joined the search for the missing girls in nigeria. the aircraft can be capable of tracking cell phone conversations in real-time. about 100 of the girls were seen for the first time in this video.

intelligence experts are poring over the tape to look for possible clues as to the location. >> what we see is a lot of straw in front of the girls. that might suggest they're being held in an area where there are domesticated animals that are fed the straw. that may help narrow down the region. >> the leader of the terrorist network that is holding the girls is threatening they will never be seen again unless imprisoned militants are released. more news overseas. pro-moscow insurgents in eastern ukraine are seeking to join russia. but it has no intention of annexing eastern ukraine as it did in crimea back in march. and the acting prime minister of ukraine says he wants to hold talks with all of the parties involved. well, a stunning turn of events in a congressional race in north carolina. democratic candidate, keith crisco, died suddenly after a fall at his home. the 71-year-old former businessman was trailing "american idol" star clay aiken

after about 400 votes after tuesday's primary. if crisco could overtake aiken in a recount that's under way right now, the party would appoint someone to face the republican incumbent in november. the investigation continues into the hot air balloon in virginia that left three people dead. the balloon hit a power line friday, it burst into flames, killing the pilot and two women's basketball coaches from the university of richmond. the governor of virginia said the pilot may not have had any way of knowing that the power line was there. >> they didn't give me anything more than they believe it was flying low and hit a power line. that apparently wasn't on the map that the pilot was looking at or not looking at. we don't know for sure. >> the ntsb is calling for strict regulation. but the hot air balloon is calling the recommendations unnecessary federal oversight. texas is scheduled to carry out the first execution in the country since a botched lethal injection in oklahoma. attorneys for robert campbell are appealing for a stay, citing the case of clayton lockett, who

died of an apparent heart attack after officials stopped his execution. the attorneys say campbell runs the same risk if the punishment goes wrong. and nasa is sounding the alarm about the warming planet. new studies show that the ice sheet at the bottom of the earth, in eastern antarctica, is melting so fast, it's now unstoppable. 40 years of data shows the glacier has retreated so much that the global sea level will rise three feet or more by the end of the century. and that threatens low-lying coastal areas, like florida. barbara walters, retiring on friday after a groundbreaking career of more than 50 years. to honor her, the abc news headquarters now bears her name. disney's ceo bob iger led the ceremony, dedicating what is now called the barbara walters' building. barbara said she is honor. but her true legacy is having paved the way for many women who now work in broadcast news. she certainly has. >> she also said she wasn't going to cry. she's good at making everybody else cry. >> yep. coming up, the new kids on the block.

plant in texas. but he says there are no plans to move from california, despite continued complaints from neighbors who say the odors burn their eyes and their throats. the ceo says he'll only expand to texas if the state can produce the same superhot peppers he's able to get in california. a family settled with general motors over its faulty ignition switches is refiling its lawsuit. brooke milton's parents helped publicize the problem that eventually led to the recall. the attorney says gm engineers committed perjury during depositions and this led to them into settling. gm denies it was involved in a cover-up or any improper behavior. and at&t is in talks to buy directv for $50 billion, making it a big part of the tv industry. the deal could be weeks away. but sources say at&t could pay 90 bucks a share. it would follow the comcast/time warner deal earlier this year. and michael sam is good for the nfl.

in the commute. flooding around the gulf, into the great lakes and new england. light snow will make roads slick in parts of the rockies. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in houston, dallas, memphis, detroit and chicago. all right. back to the news now. clippers owner donald sterling igniting a new controversy, this time over his comments about magic johnson. >> in an interview, with cnn's anderson cooper, sterling expressed sorrow for recorded racist remarks that earned him a lifetime nba ban. but he was anything but apologetic to johnson. >> he made love to every girl in every city of america. he had aids. and when he had aids, i went to my synagogue and i prayed for him. i hoped he could live and be well. i didn't criticize him. i could have. is he an example for children? >> johnson tweeted a response, saying, quote, i'd rather be talking about these great nba playoffs than donald sterling's interview.

johnson later tweeted, as well, after this week, no more sterling talk. all right. in minnesota, a college football player left jail with a towel over his head after posting bail. 20-year-old philip nelson, charged with assault in a weekend fight that left 24-year-old isaac kolstad in critical condition. police say nelson was upset over a bouncer flirting with his girlfriend. they have released video showing another suspect from the scene, in hopes of identifying him. a second case of the deadly mers virus has been confirmed on u.s. soil. now, health officials are trying to contact 500 passengers that may have come in contact with the patient. the diagnosis was made in orlando, florida, ten days after the first patient turned up in indiana. the cdc says the new patient is a medical professional from saudi arabia, who was in the u.s. visiting family. >> he's in good spirits. i saw him this morning. he continues to progress well. >> mers or middle eastern respiratory syndrome has spread

mostly to health professionals. there is no vaccine or treatment. but doctors say it's contracted through repeated and lasting contact with an infected person. a judge in los angeles has ordered an investigation into the whereabouts of casey kasem. he's suffering from advanced parkinson's disease. he can no longer speak. kasem's children say they were unable to see their father because he's being moved around between medical facilities from his wife. the kids accuse the wife of elder abuse. an attorney for one of the daughters believe kasem has been taken to an indian reservation in washington state. a 5-year-old girl is being called a hero in north carolina. jaylee monteith saved babysitter's life when she fell down the steps and hit her head. she dialed 911 and took a 3-year-old boy who was visiting over to a neighbor's home to explain what happened. >> she can't get up. >> okay.

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good tuesday morning at 4:28. thanks for starting your day with us. >> first up we have the weather forecast. if you have air conditioning, it will be in use. if you don't...we are sorry. >> tonight is the first time of difficulty sleeping unless it happened last night and going forward it will be wednesday and thursday the same thing. you can see the winds are not blowing on live doppler 7 hd. look at the embarcadero, and the flags on the ferry building, they are not moving. that is a very unusual sight and usually that is a sign that a heat wave is here. look at the first forecast: 90 to 96 inland and up to 95 around bay and up to 87 at the coast.
