[ siren ] >> reporter: at approximately 4:00 p.m. monday police received a call about a domestic dispute at this home. officer steve arkell ran to the scene.

shot and killed by resident michael nolan. police would approach the home in an armored vehicle. >> i'm shaking. i'm still shaking. all we could hear was gunfire. there were cops all around the house. >> i could hear him loading a rifle. >> reporter: a fire soon breaking out, the home exploding. moments later -- >> we went to each other, we have to get out of here. >> reporter: the house belonged to 86-year-old walter nolan, seen here on a stretcher. he shared the home with his 47-year-old son, michael. officials say the men were arguing before the explosion. the younger nolan didn't survive. >> it is believed mr. nolan was killed by the fire, or the explosion. >> reporter: the slain officer was part of the force for 15 years. he leaves behind a wife and two teenage daughters. robin? >> so incredibly sad. thank you. now, to the desperate search for the missing schoolgirls. the government is talking with the terror group in nigeria. and american-manned missions are under way. they're trying to locate the girls. hamish macdonald is in nigeria

with us for the latest. good morning, hamish. >> reporter: we can confirm that the government is talking to the syrian leadership of boko haram. this morning, the u.s. is sharing vital intelligence with nigeria, handing over satellite imagery, running manned surveillance flights, to help find those girls. this video may prove they're alive, claiming to show at least 100 of the missing, dressed in veils and chanting verses of the koran. the leader says they've been converted to islam. he wants to exchange the girls for prisoners. they're talking to leadership but not negotiating. intelligence analysts are scouring the video for clues. >> you can see large spaces between the trees. had a drone been flying overhead, when this happened,

they would have seen it. >> reporter: these are images of the burned-out school. remnants of the dorm where they were sleeping. in the ashes, all that's left is their schoolwork. it's clear that the united states and the u.k. are intensifying their efforts to help find these missing girls. but as they say, the trail is four weeks old. they're not holding out a lot of hope. >> time is of the essence to say the least. let's go down to amy who has the other top stories for us this morning. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with an emergency inside a coal mine in west virginia. and reports of miners trapped overnight. rescue crews have responded to an accident inside the brody mine in boone county, after indications of a possible roof collapse. two miners are now confirmed dead. as news of the accident spread, families rushed to the mine to check on loved ones. local media reports the mine has been cited recently for dozens of safety violations. we'll have more details as we get them.

and nasa is sounding the alarm about the warming planet. scientists are warning that the ice sheet at the bottom of the earth in western antarctica, is melting so quickly, it is unstoppable. by the end of this century, the collapsing ice will raise sea levels by at least three feet, threatening coastal areas, such as florida. and from the waters of the clib yan this morning, word of a stunning discovery. experts believe they have located what is left of christopher columbus' flagship, "the santa maria," just north of haiti, where it sank back in 1492. they hope to salvage some of that wreckage. a new orleans man is finally free after spending 34 years behind bars for a murder he did not commit, all because of prosecutor misconduct. reginald allen long claimed he was drugged before confessing to the murder of a police officer's wife. prosecutors admit that confession did not match the evidence.

contracted this? >> the good news is this virus does not spread easily person-to-person. everyone who has gotten it is a health care worker or a family member taking care of somebody. but if you travel around the globe and you get sick within a few weeks, the first thing you need to do is tell your doctor or nurse i've been traveling. it may not be mers. there's dengue, and all kinds of diseases out there. if you don't tell them that, they're not going to be thinking about it, you're not going to get the right treatment, and others could get sick. >> good advice there. >> thanks very much. now, into the investigation that left a former football player hospitalized, punched and kicked in the head sunday morning. one suspect arrested. and this morning, police are looking at surveillance video, hoping to find the second one. abc's alex perez has the story. >> reporter: this weekend, he was celebrating his college graduation. but this morning, former minnesota university football linebacker isaac kolstad is fighting to stay alive. the 24-year-old is in critical

condition, suffering severe head injuries after an altercation sunday morning with quarterback phillip nelson. a former star quarterback at the university of minnesota, named mr. football in 2011, before transferring to rutgers earlier this year. nelson was arrested and charged with assaulting kolstad and released overnight after posting bail. this morning, police are on the hunt, looking for a second suspect. the man seen here in this newly-released surveillance video, in a red shirt, running down the street. >> described as a white male in his early 20s, wearing a red t-shirt it appears. and jeans and the suspect's shirt was torn. >> reporter: kolstad and nelson crossed paths after a night at the bars in mankato, minnesota. getting into a heated argument around 2:00 a.m. sunday. authorities say kolstad threw the first punch and then walked away.

that's when investigators say the man in the red shirt ran up to kolstad and punched him in the face. so hard, witnesses say kolstad immediately collapsed. >> he immediately fell to the ground. i can still hear the sound of when his head hit the ground. it was horrible. >> reporter: surveillance cameras captured nelson approaching him, who was motionless on the ground, kicking him in the head. right now, he's been unresponsive for about ten minutes. >> reporter: nelson told police, he doesn't remember kicking kolstad. and rutgers is reserving comment until the legal process is complete. kolstad's family has already been told he will have permanent brain damage. but the extent of the damage won't be known for a few weeks. robin, george? >> we wish the very best for him. thank you. and we're going to switch gears right now. big story in the music business. >> the man is still putting out music, robin. >> it's a new cultural moment. a new album out overnight from michael jackson. it's making you move your feet, people. open up your ears. it's paired up with some of the

abc's matt gutman is tracking the case in south africa. >> reporter: it was the biggest turn in the saga in the pistorius trial. >> i indicated yesterday that i'd bring in an application. i'm ready to do so. >> reporter: gerrie nel, the pit bull, requesting psychological evaluation of pistorius, saying -- >> we will argue that the accused was not the most impressive witness. we will argue that his evidence be rejected. isn't that the only reason why a psychiatrist is consulted after his evidence? >> reporter: his defense witness, psychiatrist merrill forrester, diagnosed him with general anxiety disorder which she said affected how he acted that night and could play a role in his sentencing. you could see him biting his lip. she seemed to bludgeon the

interpret tags of events. >> there could be another explanation. that it was just lying. yeah. he could just be lying to you. >> reporter: and he's a danger to society. >> people suffer from generalized anxiety disorders are not dangerous as much. people with generalized anxiety disorders probably shouldn't have firearms. that creates the element of dangerousness. >> reporter: and it got worse. under cross, pistorius who pleaded not guilty, waffled about why he shot at the door. saying, among other things, he shot accidentally. it's not what he told the psychiatrist. >> he said to you, he fired at the noise. >> at the noise. >> you know that he said in court that, he denied he fired at the noise? >> it would appear that there are inconsistencies. >> reporter: now, the defense, forced into a position where it has to prove pistorius' sanity. saying he is not delusional. he's not paranoid. negating the testimony of what should have been the star witness, that psychiatrist. for 24 hours, oscar pistorius has to wait and learn if he has to be sent to a mental institution for as many as 30 days. robin, george? >> another twist in this trial.

was unable to tell a judge where he had been taken. the lawyer saying, i have no idea where he is. but that he's no longer in the united states. >> we had some rumor that she was planning on taking him to an indian reservation. >> reporter: kasem's children say their stepmother had barred them from seeing their father. this is the family's second bitter court battle over visitation. >> we did get a heads up from one of jean's family members, who contacted us and said, this isn't right. >> reporter: the l.a. judge has now ordered an immediate investigation into kasem's whereabouts and appointed the deejay's daughter, kerri, as temporary conservator. the lawyer representing wife jean kasem did not respond to our repeated request for comment. >> our main goal is to find our father and bring him to safety. >> reporter: potentially at stake, kasem's multimillion-dollar estate. a fortunate he earned partly as the voice for shaggy on "scooby doo." >> i'm casey kasem, counting down the hottest songs in the land.

>> good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news from west virginia. a deadly accident in a coal mine. reports overnight that the roof of the brody coal mine in boone county has collapsed. trapping some miners. state police now confirming two people have been killed. the mine has been reported for safety violations. but no word on what caused this accident. and abc news has confirmed, talks are underway between the nigerian government and the terror group that kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls. the militants are demanding the release of prisoners in exchange for the girls. but nigeria's government has refused to negotiate on those terms. manned aircraft are scanning an area the size of new england in hopes of finding those girls. and new details about this fiery home explosion caught on live television in new hampshire. a police officer was fatally shot at the scene. investigators say the fire followed an argument between a homeowner and his son. they say the son opened fire on the responding police officer.

and former "american idol" star clay aiken is expected to be named the winner of his congressional primary race this week, following the sudden death of his opponent. 71-year-old keith crisco died on monday after falling at his home. aiken was leading crisco by 369 votes. he has suspended his campaign out of respect for crisco's family. and a horrifying moment for this mother as her little girl slips from her arms under a train in australia. as the mother frantically tries to save her, passengers run and alert the conductor not to pull out of the station. bystanders were then able to rescue that girl, pulling her safely off the tracks. she was not injured, amazingly. and finally, bad news for people who like wine and chocolate. we've heard for years that a daily glass of red wine and a little chocolate protects against heart disease, cancer and early death, mainly because of an antioxidant. but a study out today is now questioning the benefits of that antioxidant.

during a nine-year study, doctors found it had no impact on a patient's health risks or longevity. but they say if you like your wine and chocolate, you can keep enjoying them in moderation. but they ask, if you haven't partaken yet, not to add it to your diet. >> people are partaking with michael strahan over there. he's in hot demand. he's as hot as chocolate and red wine. >> only nine years long. >> i agree. >> reporter: keeping residents informed about the latest weather affecting their city. but what viewers don't know is that two years ago, when abc 7's bri winkler was just 24 years old, she had a stroke. >> i couldn't even let it process that i was having a stroke. i didn't know what that meant. >> reporter: winkler said she thought she was fainting. >> the numbness spread to my face, then down to my arms and my legs. and i had to get on the floor and crawl. >> reporter: she says the entire left side of her body went completely numb. >> and i went to put on my workout shirt. and that's when i lost hearing out of my right ear. and then, it spread. next thing you know, i couldn't walk. >> reporter: doctors say strokes are unusual in young people. but they do happen. >> isn't it beautiful? >> reporter: "malcolm in the middle's" star, frankie muniz, at 26. another a year later. >> i couldn't say words. and i thought i was saying them. and my fiancee was looking at me like i was speaking a foreign language. >> reporter: muniz had a ministroke. when blood stops reaching the

brain. in bri's case, doctors found a blood clot in her brain. >> doctors don't recognize this as a stroke because they don't imagine this could be happening to them. because of that, they don't see medical attention. >> of course, it is shocking i was so young. i view it as a positive thing in my life because i do appreciate everything a lot more. >> reporter: today, bri is back at work, rain or shine, giving her forecast. and now, sharing a story that she hopes encourages others to be on the look out for signs of a stroke, no matter their age. >> from here on out, i want to spread awareness as much as possible. >> reporter: for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. >> good for her for wanting to do that. joining us now is abc news senior medical editor dr. jennifer ashton. how prevalent are strokes in younger people? >> you tipically see it in older people. its incident is increasing in younger people. one in ten strokes occur in people age 18 to 50 years of age.

so, it is important to understand that it's stroke awareness month, this may. and we need to be aware that strokes can hit at any age. even infants. >> that is kind of shocking. what are the special risk factors for younger people. >> usually we say, the same things that are bad for the heart, are usually bad for the brain. people with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, who smoke. sometimes it's due to communication in the heart, one side of the heart to the other. sometimes it occurs on women on certain types of hormones. sometimes we don't know. it's important to know what the signs and symptoms are. >> what are those signs? are they different younger versus older people? >> there's a lot of different signs. the three big ones that everyone needs to be aware of. facial droop. the letter "f." then, arm weakness or pain. we heard it with bri, it was one whole side of her body. and lastly, speech problems. this can save someone else's life. it can save your life. call 911. >> you should go straight to the emergency room. >> absolutely. >> great advice. let's go to michael.

and you got perfect 10s. does that limit the blow from being eliminated from the competition? >> the fact we were able to make some special dances, makes it a little easier. we're disappointed because we're so close to the final. and to be able to have one last competitive dance with each other would have been special. but i think just the journey itself. we're thankful for all of the opportunities. and the friendship we now have. you know, the big "dancing with the stars" family. we're a part of it now. >> you went out strong. went out really strong. i remember carrie ann saying after one of your dances, she wanted to live in charlie's world. sharna, you got to do that for nine weeks. what was it like? >> charlie's world can be kind of crazy. we were doing all of this traveling for the stars on ice tour. that was really insane. but it was wonderful to be part of charlie's world. he taught me so much about

positivity and the outlook on life. and not sweating the small stuff. it was as wonderful as i was the coach and the teacher to learn something from him, too. it was really a blessing. and like he said, we have a wonderful friendship now. i think that's even more valuable. >> you learned a lot, charlie. a lot of questions coming in. anita wanted to know, will you incorporate any of your new dances into your ice skating? >> oh, yeah. anytime you learn a new way to move your body, it's going to help you. especially in figure skating. you know, you're always learning. you're always finding new ways to express yourself and be better. so much of what we're doing on the ice is based on ballroom dancing. but we're always a little insecure because we know we're not doing it the right way. but for meryl and myself, now we know what we're doing. it's going to make it more special. >> it's hard to believe that someone who can dance on these little blades, and then to dance on their feet. >> it is different.

>> it's a different way of moving. the way you hold your partner. the way you lead. the center of gravity -- it's completely different. and you know, learned that the hard way. i expected it to be easier, honestly. it was incredibly difficult. but i learned a lot. >> you said right after, you are now on team meryl. >> that's right. >> 17 years y'all are together on the ice and then competed against each other. what were those emotions like? >> we talked a lot about it. it was a popular question. but for us, i think, coming off winning an olympic gold medal, achieving our lifelong dream together. we were in it together. even if technically we were competing against each other. we were so proud to see the other one out there doing their thing. i'm so proud of how well meryl is doing. and how well she's represented herself. i'm team meryl. go, meryl. >> you should be proud of yourself, with sharna, as well.

incredible performance you gave right there. and this was something -- this was a role you've been drawn to for a long time. you read "the normal heart" as a teenager. >> yeah. i read the play for the first time when i was 14 and living in suburban texas. it just blew my mind. i had no idea that this was going on. and no one around me was talking about it. it completely changed my world view. and getting to be a part of it 20 years later is just, like, the opportunity of a lifetime. >> that's one of the things that makes this so special. it is 20 years later. we're not in the middle of the crisis. we get to view it with the perspective of history. >> i think it's scary to think about it as a period piece. aids hasn't been eradicated. and there's 6,000 new cases of it every day. 30 years of the original production, it's getting a life on film as a really profound gift. >> you actually got to work a bit with the playwright, larry

kramer. you all worked together, filming a big party seen on the day that the supreme court struck down the marriage act. >> larry, in so many ways, is somewhat responsible for that moment, to be there with him on that day was just completely surreal. and one of those few times in your life when you feel like you're really in the right place at the right time. and that's part of something really special. and to see him there on that day, was just unbelievable. >> of course, we all saw you in "magic mike." lara insisted i bring up "magic mike." you had to go through a physical transformation? was it 30, 40 pounds? >> i stopped weighing myself after 35. i thought the number wasn't important. we had a couple weeks to go. matthew was incredibly helpful. i reached out to him. he gave me pointers. and i did my own thing, too. and he was very kind.

i'm loving me some valerie harper right now. she is defying the odds, facing lung cancer. doctors told her she had just three months to live. that was one year and four months ago. she is here to share some insight on survival and what she is doing to help other cancer patients. and we are so happy. please, please welcome valerie harper. >> thank you so much. i am so welcomed by you. and this is a great red-letter day. let's call it turquoise red letter day. you're launching this for us. it's called lung force. and it's about the real, real problem and opportunity that we have. >> number one killer. >> number one killer of women. and women were surveyed. and they said what cancer is the most dangerous to you? the percentage that said lung cancer, 1%. they perceived either breast cancer or ovarian or any number, which all need attention.

but lung cancer has been so neglected. and it's also been stigmatized. must smoke. when i say my mom died of lung cancer. oh, she was a smoker. never in her life. and that goes along with people trying to distance themselves from lung cancer because the real truth is, if you have lung cancer, you're in line for lung cancer. it's time to get the funding to fight it, to research it. more than anything, let people know what the deal is and how dangerous it is to women. >> that's why you have aligned yourself with the american lung association. >> exactly. they are great. they're 100 years old. older. >> they've been out there. >> they started out with t.b. and i think of them as a brave organization. back in the turn of the century, 1900s, who was doing anything for t.b.? this organization was saying, we have to do something. people have to breathe. >> you want to make it clear that that's what you have.

>> thank you. >> there was speculation that it was brain cancer. >> it's located in the lining of my brain. i'm on the cusp. but the lung cancer, the cell that's causing the disease, is lung cancer. and the extraordinary thing for me was having this opportunity to talk to everybody. and, oh, talk about corporate responsibility. everyone knows cvs. i shop there all the time. but they've done an amazing thing. they're going to lose 2. -- as high as $2.5 billion a year, by taking cigarettes off their shelves. they're removing tobacco products. i think that's sensational. people should cheer it. >> sending a strong message. you did when you spoke before the senate. >> oh. >> in the hearings. it was very vocal. i want to talk to you, we have so many people asking, how are you doing it?

they want to know. >> just like their neighbor. like you, my girlfriend. my tests were on friday last. really great. i mean, i have a smiling brain cancer. actually, he's a neurologist. he said, this is so good. we're moving in the right direction. i haven't shifted in any way. and i'm feeling well. i get tired. but i'm going to be 75. i mean, come on. >> you -- visualization, too? >> that i do. maybe you do. >> i do. >> i think it's really important. >> tell people. >> visualization is visualizing anything you want in your head. i visualize myself getting rid of the cancer cells. i touch them with a wand. i look like tinkerbell. i create anything i want. and you heal yourself through actually visualizing the cells healing. or kicking them out wherever they're sitting around. and i talk to them, too.
