releasing new photos this morning. celebrating barbara walters. a legend who broke down barriers in tv news, now saying good-bye after an unparalleled career. we'll take you behind the scenes of her last show at "the view." and the unprecedented gathering of women she's blazed a path for. all surprises her with a memorable tribute. now barbara says good-bye this morning. >> good morning, america. that doesn't sound like good-bye from barbara walters. >> not at all. she's unstoppable. >> we're going to have a lot of fun with her this morning. but first, this was the scene overnight in southern california. the fires overwhelming an entire hillside. you can see the hot embers flying right into the air. more than 2,600 firefighters now on the front lines, battling 10 unprecedented wildfires.
7:02 am
so many multi-million dollar homes burning up right now. a lot of memories going up with them. >> look at this one home. total destruction. that appears to be a television still attached to the furnace, to the fireplace. but the only thing left standing. and this is just so unbelievable. look at this, as well. the heat and wind creating this smoke whirl. or smokenado. >> we have team coverage this morning. ginger zee and abc's cecilia vega in escondido, california. ginger, these conditions are so dangerous. >> reporter: yeah, the krns far from perfect. we know this morning, two dozen homes, plus this one, and an apartment complex destroyed. we know that weather has been a huge factor. the state of california now in 100% severe drought. and santa maria at 105, the hottest may temperature ever. some of the others above the

century mark helping to incite the flames. flames racing across 10,000 acres. firefighters working to contain at least ten separate blazes. fire whirls emerging from the parched hillside, while smokenadoes and fires everywhere created close to zero visibility. >> i can't believe it. it's unreal. >> reporter: in san marcos, transformers exploding. >> there's an explosion. >> reporter: in escondido, a church up in flames. the entire state of california, moderate to exceptional drought. you can see the dry brush and the fire rushing up that hill. helicopter after helicopter dropping water and trying to save the homes above. at least 125,000 evacuation notices have been issued. hundreds, forced into shelters. >> we packed. do i not pack? do i run? >> i never thought we would be people asking for help. i thought we would be the people helping other people. >> reporter: the fires already claiming at least one life. investigators now urgently
7:04 am
trying to determine the cause. >> we all have suspicions, like the public does, when you have nine fires started all over the county. we are actively investigating the start of those fires. >> reporter: and you can feel the difference this morning. much cooler, and into the 70s bit weekend. better conditions into saturday. >> hopefully that cooldown will help. thank you, ginger. cecilia is there this morning, there with people who lost their homes or came within seconds of losing them. many still waiting to find out this morning, cecilia? >> reporter: good morning to you. the air as you can see, still thick with smoke. this home still smoldering. we believe this is the garage. here's a washing machine here. on this block alone, three homes destroyed. and so many people, still unable to return. overnight, the unsettling return. >> it's just devastation. it's irreplaceable. >> reporter: this resident getting a first look at the home that's been in his family for nearly half a century. >> you walk in, that's the living room.
7:05 am

7:06 am
i could feel the heat rub against my skin. it was really hot. >> reporter: many residents now left to wait and wonder. >> we're sitting here, waiting to see what happens, if we're going to be able to go back and see if the houses got destroyed or not. >> reporter: these fires have caused more than $20 million in damages. as ginger said earlier, forced more than 125,000 people into evacuations. the hope is that today, with the cooler temperatures people are allowed to return to their home s. >> that is the hope. cecilia, and ginger, thank you both. we're going to turn to l.a. clippers' owner donald sterling, fighting back against the nba this morning. sterling's lawyer says he will not pay the league's fine, laying the groundwork for a possible lawsuit. abc's ryan smith is here with the latest. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is what we have learned. abc news has confirmed that donald sterling fired off a letter to the nba, through his lawyers, big-time antitrust lawyers, threatening to sue. saying he has done nothing wrong. he's not going to pay the $2.5
7:07 am
million fine assessed by the nba. and the letter reportedly says that the controversy will be, quote, ajaud indicated. and it usually means a lawsuit is coming. >> he is clearly digging in. but the nba has a lot of firepower, too. how are they going to respond? >> reporter: they will respond swiftly and say they did everything by the book. we have the right to do this. we have the right to assess this kind of fine and they have a lot of backup for that. they essentially have this power under the constitution and bylaws. >> sterling signed a contract when he became an owner saying i will abide by the league's system of justice. >> reporter: right. but he can argue in the courts, they were arbitrary and capricious the way they assessed this fine. they didn't do the their is and cross the ts. that's a long shot for him not to pay this fine. >> wow. big battle ahead. ryan, thanks very much. let's get to amy with today's other top stories. >> good morning, everybody. we begin with breaking news for the second time in recent weeks. there's been a major disaster onboard a ferry carrying hundreds of people. this time, nearly 200 people are
7:08 am
missing and feared dead, after the ferry they were riding in capsized in a storm in bangladesh. survivors say they pleaded with the captain to stay close to the shore. but he ignored them. also happening right now, historic flooding in eastern europe. this video shows an entire bridge washing away downstream in bosnia, crashing into another bridge. four months of rain fell in just one day. and a massive attack caught on camera, as rebels in syria set off this monster bomb blast, destroying a syrian army base. they say they spent months digging a half-mile tunnel under that base and packed it with 60 tons of explosives. no word on the casualties. and veterans affairs eric shinseki is promising he will get to the bottom of the growing scandal at the v.a. hospitals. but he's refusing to resign. he testified on capitol hill about allegations of treatment delays and falsified patient appointment records. for the first time, shinseki
7:09 am
confirmed he's seen evidence that some v.a. medical centers are, in fact, cooking the books. >> any allegation, any adverse incident like this, makes me as -- makes me mad as hell. i could use stronger language here, mr. chairman. but in deference to the committee, i won't. >> he promised a hospital audit will be ready in three weeks. overnight, an explosion ripped through this apartment complex in indianapolis, blowing the roof clear off the building. four college students were inside and reported a strange odor. they say it may have been gas. but thankfully, everyone survived. and a young girl in pennsylvania is okay this morning after surviving a very close call. she was riding her scooter -- oh, my goodness, look at that. when a driver, fleeing police, crashed right on to the sidewalk, sending the 8-year-old flying, just missing her younger sister. but somehow neither girl was seriously injured. that suspect is now under arrest.
7:10 am
and finally, it all started with a sound in the middle of the night. a man near los angeles forgot to lock his door before he fell asleep on the couch. he sat up, trying to figure out what that sound was. and then, suddenly, the door pushes open. panic sets in as two glowing eyes are revealed. that is a black bear, staring right at him, face-to-face. they have a stareoff. he finally starts yelling and gesturing. flips on the lights. and thankfully, the bear decided to take off. i think the funnier thing is, he actually went back to sleep on the couch afterwards. i don't know if i'd be ever be able to sleep again. he did lock the door, though. this time, he locked the door. >> are there cameras everywhere? >> i know. seriously. i'm going to have a camera while i'm sleeping. i don't know. maybe it's a nanny cam. >> could be. we're going to turn to the turmoil at "the new york times." the top editor, the first woman with the job, fired after less than three years, sparking an instant debate.
7:11 am
was sexism behind her sudden pink slip? claire shipman here with the story. good morning. >> reporter: what a story, indeed. the central question seems to be whether abramson as a strong woman was held to standards that some men are not. some reported that bosses and underlings found her too pushy, which can, as we know, be a loaded term. debate has ignited about one of the most powerful women in the media world was sexism. or was a blatant sexism. her daughter even weighing in, offering this picture of her mom on instagram, calling it her new hobby. #girls, #pushy. "the times," in a memo to the staff, brushed to squelch the suggestion that she was let go because she confronted her bosses about being paid less than her equals for years. it is simply not true that jill's compensation was less than her predecessors.
7:12 am
the only reason for the decision was some aspects of our newsroom. but other reporters, including one from "the new yorker," suggested that she was paid less and frustrated. had hired a lawyer to help her. a move "the times" found aggressive. in the 2 1/2 years she was at "the times," the stock price at the paper almost doubled, digital readership increased and she gathered eight pulitzer prizes. still, many suggest that abramson's management style was the principle issue. and that has some crying double-standard. >> there's a perception that you don't want to work for a pushy, brusque woman. but when you work for a man, you almost assume that there will be a certain amount of power and aggression behind his leadership. >> reporter: in an interview with charlie rose after she was hired at the "times," she committed that her publisher had discussed her management style with her. >> he said, good, jill. delighted and engaged and wants
7:13 am
to talk about a great story. >> and bad jill is -- >> bad jill could interrupt and be bad. >> reporter: now, her successor will also make history. he's the first african-american to run "the times." i can tell you after talking to a lot of women at the paper, many are upset. a young woman told me, i don't know how to behave there anymore. and the veterans are saying, we had a lot of tough, crotchety male editors, and they kept their jobs. >> that's what you were saying in your book about women and confidence. >> reporter: she was displaying confidence in asking for more money. >> thanks, claire shipman. a warning about the popular sleeping aid lunesta. and its generic form. taken by nearly 1 million americans. the fda is cutting the initial recommended dose because of concerns about drowsiness the next day. abc news chief medical editor, dr. richard besser, is here. so what is the recommendation and why? >> the fda is saying anyone starting on the drug of lunesta or a generic form start with one milligram instead of two. so, half the dose.
7:14 am
the reason is, the effects of the drug lasting to the next morning. look at this new study. 7 1/2 hours after taking a 3 milligram dose, a lot of people were still having impaired memory, impaired coordination, which means no driving. 11 1/2 hours later, some people were still impaired. >> and they had no idea. >> that's what concerns me. they asked people whether they were functioning fine. many people who were impaired thought they had no problem. >> what are your recommendations? >> with any sleeping aid, you want to start with as low a dose as you can. for me, half of a starting dose works just fine. but try other things first. i found since i've taken up meditation, i rarely have any trouble sleeping. it's totally changed my approach to night time. >> and melatonin. there's natural things to do. >> there are. you don't want to reach for these pills right away. >> unless you need them. thanks, rich. have a good weekend. lara? >> all right, now. i'm thrilled to share this with all of you. a very special morning here at "gma." we are celebrating the one, the
