good morning, i'm katie mardulo, it's 8:00 a.m., we'll start off with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. this shows the cloud cover, the high clouds over the north bay, it made for a nice sunrise and the sun doesn't set until 8:15 tonight between now and then, another four to eight degrees ever cooling, with 67 in san francisco. mid 70s in the santa clara valley and you have to go out to reach those 80s. most of the 80s shunted into the sacramento valley. look for the steady sea breeze to keep things cooler through the next couple of days. that's coming up. katie? >> thank you, lisa.

caught in the line of fire -- an 8-year-old girl is in the hospital after being shot in the neck. she was playing in her yard when bullets started flying. a man was also wounded. police don't know who the target was. it happened around 6:30 yesterday evening in oakland on 66th avenue near international boulevard. the girl was taken to shirld's hospital oakland. abc news reporter allen wong has details. police say bullets from half a block away pierced this wood fence and struck a young girl playing on the other side. >> i hear a little girl crying. >> juan garcia said he heard 10-16 shots and ran to help the girl who was bleeding badly in her front yard. >> how bad was it? >> it sounded like all i can hear. >> another man halfway down the block was also shot several dimes. but police aren't sure if he was the intended target or if he was caught in the line of fire. >> we don't have a good description. gunmen at all. >> it happened around 6:00 on 66th in this neighborhood east

of international boulevard. sky 7 was overhead as officers collected evidence. >> there was at least one vehicle driving southbound in the 1800 block of 66th at least two individuals exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds striking the victims. >> police say the few witnesses they have are not fully cooperating. in oakland, allen wong, abc7 news. police and fire crews are on alert in novato, they say an arsonist has set 13 different fires there. most were grass fires, but two were set at home in the neighborhood near south novato boulevard and redwood boulevard. abc7 news reporter have details. >> fire crews on watch. joined by five police officers on special patrol. hoping to keep a series of fires from happening again. one of them kept tracy barber up all night. >> she came over and started screaming and banging on the door. trying to get me up and saying

grab the babies, got to go. >> her neighbor, nancy pollock is the one who woke her up, pollock's husband shot pictures of the fire as it was burning yards from their home. it's their normally quiet greyhound shawna who is being hailed at a hero because she started barking. >> if it wasn't for her we would have been in trouble. it spread quickly. >> the dog's early warning prompted a quick call to 911 and a prompt response by the fire department kept the grass fire on the hill from getting closer to homes. this was one of nearly a dozen fires that were burning at about the same time in novato. one of thosesinged the front door of this home. they're all bringing back terrible memories of a fire bug on the loose just two years ago in this neighborhood. this time, tracy is spooked. >> if they were to do this again, their rooms are the first ones to go and it will be too late. >> she's decided her kids will not stay overnight at home for a

while. in novato, sergio quintana, abc7 news. investigators in walnut creek say four suspicious fires in a nearby park are related. the fire is in the same spot as a fire two years ago, and in the same area as three others in the past week. a fast response from cal fire crews in the south bay kept a brush fire from growing out of control. sky 7 hd was there as helicopters and planes dropped retardant on the fire which reached seven acres. it was first reported just after 4:00, between santa clara and santa cruz counties, in the mount madonna area near morgan hill. firefighters say no structures were ever in harm's way. major progress to report on efforts to put out the destructive wildfires burning in san diego county. officials say they are nearing full containment on all but two of the 11 fires that broke out this week. fires burning at camp pendleton and in the community of san marcos are still raging. but in other parts of the

county, residents have been allowed to return home. >> the fire blew down through the hills, kind of jumped over, come up the back hillside, we managed to keep my mom's house and their house next door. >> yesterday, a 57-year-old man pleaded not guilty to arson charges. after he was seen adding dead brush to a fire in oceanside. also fire investigators have concluded sparks from faulty construction equipment accidentally touched off the 1200-acre rancho bernardo fire. police in antioch are investigating the death of an 18-month-old boy who drowned in a swimming pool. sky 7 hd was over the scene after the child was found in a pool on simpsondale court. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. adults were there at the time of the drowning and are interviewing everyone who was present to determine how this happened. the family of one of the two b.a.r.t. track inspectors who were hit and killed bay train last year is suing the agency.

lawrence daniels' daughters accuse b.a.r.t. of being negligent when it sent him and christopher shepard to check for a dip in the tracks near the walnut creek station. both daniels and shepherd were veteran b.a.r.t. employees, the train was being operated by a trainee. this morning a san jose company is warning whoever stole a piece of equipment from one of its work trucks, what they have is radioactive. this device is used to measure soil density and moisture content. the silicon valley soil engineering company tells our media partner, the "san jose mercury news," the radioactive material in the tool is about the size of a tic-tac and surrounded by steel, but it can cause health problems if someone is directly exposed to it. walnut creek police are warning people not to be alarmed if they hear gunshots and screaming at a local school today. those sounds are part of a training exercise. at walnut creek intermediate school. the department says it's telling people ahead of time, so nobody

panics and does not assume the worst today. well this is a time of year when students across the bay area are celebrating prom. last night, that rite of passage was enjoyed by students of all ages. at lucille packard children's hospital. abc7 news anchor ama dates takes us to their prom. >> reporter: boys and girls, step up to the 10th hospital prom at lucille packard children's hospital. >> basically it's kind of a cross between a cirque du soleil and a kid-friendly moulin rouge. >> a prom that seems to surpass the traditional festivities by leaps and bounds, thanks to the men's and women's gymnastics team from stanford and cal. the perfect way for the children to forget about their illnesses, if only for a night. while at the prom. kids can get their face painted. get a caricature and play games and win prizes. >> that's so cool!

sonoma county's district attorney said she is still reviewing the shooting death of a 13-year-old santa rosa boy last october bay sheriffs deputy. according to the "press-democrat" district attorney says her office is still determining whether sonoma county deputy eric gillhouse should face criminal charges in the death of andy lopez, lopez was killed october 22nd as he walked across an avenue, carrying a b.b. gun. a former santa clara county supervisor found guilty of misusing thousands of dollars in public funds has been released from jail. our media partner, the mercury news reports george shirawkawa junior was released after seven months of a year-long sentence, he pleaded guilty to charges including corruption and gambling with public funds. he faces three years probation, during which he's not allowed to gamble and must attend counseling. this is one of the most

they say, well, this is really good. you should hear this. no, please put us on your do not call list. sometimes it works. >> one of most common questions we receive here in our 7 on your side office is -- is how-day get the telemarketers to stop calling me? meet erika elson, she has worked as a telemarketer in southern california for years. and she has a few insider tips to get telemarketers to stop calling. number one -- answer the phone. >> one mistake that people commonly make is that they let telemarketers call them over and over again without picking up the phone. >> elson says that's one of the worst things can you do. >> we'll assume that you're not home. or we can call you another time. >> number two, don't hang up. >> definitely do not hang up the phone as soon as the telemarketer has identified themselves. because we'll just assume you got disconnected and we will call you back. >> number three, after answering, insist to be put on their do not call list. early in her career, elson's

one final note, even if you are put on the list, political organizations, charities and surveying companies can legally still call you. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. happening today, hundreds of local children will release more than 2,000 chinook salmon into the san francisco bay. it's the kiss and release salmon event. officials say the salmon have reached the stage where they must be released into the bay in preparation for life in the ocean. organizers say the event is meant to be a fun experience for children, while teaching them about salmon conservation. today's event runs from noon until 4:00 at blacky's pasture in tiburon. good news for san jose state students returning next year. the school has scrapped plans to increase student fees for the fall semester. instead, the school is cutting them by $100. students had protested the fee, which would have been the highest in the cal state system. administrators plan to charge almost $800 a year, but instead now students will pay about

it was a garter snake, this is what one looks like. the delta pilot reportedly announced that it was on the runway and that a worker was being sent to retrieve it. passengers live-tweeted the incident. one man quoted the pilot as saying, folks, slight to delay due do a snake on the runway. ground crew working to apprehend the snake and take it to a sanctuary. the airport spokesman said the flight may have been delayed a few minutes or less. up next on the abc7 news saturday morning news -- a crackdown by police that could drive up the price of getting to the airport. they're targeting one group in particular. and we'll show you some new technology solutions that may help solve a major security issue at airports around the country.

time, near 80 around fairfield and concord today. perhaps morgan hill. low 70s, berkeley and hayward and the clouds will re-enter the picture tonight. a look at the cooldown further for the beginning of the work week coming up. katie. lisa, new this morning, president obama says he's heading to the baseball hall of fame to stress how tourism can lead to good-paying american jobs. in his weekly address, the president announced he'll visit the hall of fame on thursday. he said tourism is an export that can grow the u.s. economy. he's pitching to congress to spend more to modernize bridges, roads and ports. he says first-class infrastructure attracts first-class jobs. we know business owners don't seek out crumbling roads and bridges and backed-up supply chains. they set up shop where the newest, fastest, most convenient transportation and communications networks let them invent and sell goods made in america to the rest of the world as fast as possible. here's the problem -- if congress doesn't act by the end of this summer, federal funding

for transportation projects will run out. >> the president warns almost 700,000 jobs are at risk if congress doesn't authorize more transportation money by the end of the summer. a strong showing of police officers averted what was promised to be another afternoon of violence in downtown berkeley yesterday. for the past three fridays, students from area high schools have been fighting in the downtown area. this is video posted on the local news website, berkeley side showing what happened last friday. about 50 officers flooded downtown streets yesterday, hoping to keep the peace. >> there's been a lot of concern from the business communities, downtown community, our parent community obviously, their kids are going to school and moving around. the city has contacted us, we've been in discussions all week with the police department. >> berkeley side reports two berkeley high school students were arrested last week. and one student from an oakland charter school was arrested when he pepper-sprayed a crowd of teenagers. police say the violence stems from an off-campus dispute between berkeley and oakland

high schoolers. happening today, the family of a missing 19-year-old man with a traumatic brain injury will hold a walk in golden gate park to mark the first anniversary of his disappearance. shawn seedy was last seen may 21st 2013 during a visit to his former high school on oak street. he later called his father and then disappeared. that phone call was traced to golden gate park and today's walk will follow his presumed path from the school to the park. today's walk for shawn event gets under way at 12:30. bay area congressman eric sillwell says technology and private contractors may improve security around airports, but airports want passengers to pay for that smallwell sits on the homeland security committee and yesterday he featured, but did not endorse six companies which make perimeter security systems. this comes after 15-year-old yaya abdi hopped a fence at san jose and stowed away on a flight to hawaii. airports want congress to increase the cap for passenger

facility charges from $4.50, to $8.50, which means passengers would be paying for increased security. >> local money, and passengers that use our airports, they pay for what they use. and that money is kept locally and is reinvested back in our airports. >> congressman smallwell wants to create a pilot program to find a way to close gaps in security. a major runway safety project that could lead to flight delays begins today at sfo. two of the airports' four runways will be closed through september. the airport is pouring crushable concrete at the ends to prevent planes from overshooting the runways. sfo says the summer closure is the fastest option for finishing the federally mandated project. also aheads up for drivers in the santa rosa area. highway 101 at airport boulevard will be closed tonight into tomorrow morning, for bridge demolition. and clean-up. both northbound and southbound 101 will close at 10:00 and not

reopen until at least 6:00 a.m. also, the eastbound airport boulevard on-ramp will be closed from 7:00 until 10:00 a.m. southbound off-ramp to airport boulevard will be closed from 10:00 to 9:00 and the westbound airport boulevard on-ramp will be closed from 10:00 to 8:00. san francisco airport fed one ride sharing companies. they say drivers for companies like uber, list, and side car are operating at the airport illegally and now sfa is turning to state regulators for help. here's abc7 news reporter lillian kim. >> driving travelers to and from sfo is big business. so much so, that drivers for ride-sharing companies like uber, lift and side car are doing it anyway, without the proper permits. gregory bruno got a stern warning from an airport officer. >> just basically said, what are you commercial driver and i said well, no, i work for uber. he said that's commercial, you're restricted from picking up here. and told me to leave. >> many drivers have even taken

off their so-called trade dress, a pink mustache for example. but sfo office remembers still catching a number of drivers in violation. in a three-week period they've given warnings to 110 drivers. 101 were from uber. one from lift and one from side car. in a letter to california public utilities commission which regulates ride-sharing companies, sfo's director wrote, the disturbing lack of compliance with cpuc requirements raises serious public safety concerns at the airport. >> we're finding drivers that have expired licenses. finding drivers with no insurance. finding drivers that don't even, don't even own the car that they're using. >> sfo says a permit would solve these problems. companies would pay $1,000 deposit and $3.75 per ride. but uber says it's concerned with the tracking devices that would be required for all of their vehicles, which it says violates the privacy of their drivers and passengers. the same technology required for taxis and limos.

>> the weather is cooperating for the weekend. >> mother nature's air conditioning cranked up today and for the weekend. so as we check out live doppler 7 hd, we have a few clouds, not only the low clouds at the coast. but higher clouds from the north bay and breezy winds by the delta, wind gusts up to 31 miles per hour. fairfield concord you have a 24-mile-per-hour wind gust. half moon bay, here's a look at emeryville. beginning to see partly cloudy conditions, temperatures ranging from the upper 50s, san carlos, san jose, 59, 59 in half moon bay. breezy winds here, we're back to that again. and it should feel pretty good out there. here, santa cruz, you can see things brightening up already with numbers in the mid 70s. 58 by the delta. but it is going to be cool, our local bay area beaches from ocean beach, pacifica, half moon bay in fact some gusty winds, you've had it the past couple

days. santa rosa, once again up into the 80s, but only low 80s. so numbers will be about the same up in the north bay. but the cooling trend certainly felt in our east bay valleys. here's the mount tam shot. you can see the windy conditions up to 30-mile-per-hour winds above 1500 feet. we'll call it partly sunny this morning. sun and high clouds with a breezy afternoon not only today, into the second half of your weekend, and also monday as well. looking at the cooling trend, really encompassing all of us in the fact that another system is going to pivot down from this one will allow for some extra cloud cover and even maybe some mountain showers heading towards tuesday. but locally today, we'll have the sunshine, a few high clouds, and then we'll look for the next system to increase the cooling trend. today four to eight degrees cooler, another couple of degrees knocked down tomorrow. so partly cloudy in southern california and boy, they are happy about the onshore flow, the moisture air heading into san diego.

helping with the fire-fighting efforts, just 75 there today, 64 in monterey. upper 80s in sacramento. so still pretty warm there. with 70 in tahoe. but the cooling trend will be headed your way, too, very windy in the sierra nevada. 72 in oakland today. with san mateo coming in about the same. palo alto, 73, san francisco 67. so temperatures coming down to near average today. but still, in the low 80s for fairfield and antioch with the breeze reaching our east bay valley. so here's the way it looks outside right now. you can see a little puff of wind out there for the game tonight. 6:05. temperatures will be in the 60s, dropping to the 60s, it will be breezy, the sun setting at 8:15. and tomorrow for bay to breakers, if you're headed into the city early morning hours, we'll have the cloud cover, and numbers in the 50s. so near perfect conditions, 59 at 9:00, low 60s, 11:00 and 1:00 will increase the sunshine. the accuweather seven-day forecast then we'll keep the winds throughout the weekend and

40,000 registered runners or 100,000 expected fans, sunday's bay to breakers is sure to be a colorful collection of san francisco's finest. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. costumes can be so great. if you plan to come into the city for the race, b.a.r.t. will be running earlier than usual tomorrow and it will have extra cars, and the larkspur ferry will make four early morning trips to san francisco and the ferry terminal here in the city just a few blocks from the start. next, inventors and the maker fair return to san mateo this weekend. what this year's event is celebrating.
