>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks nor joining us on this sunday, may 18. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. good morning, everyone. you can see some clouds over the north bay but with upper elevation winds we have a slightly warmer air mass this morning. numbers from the low 50s in nap but to the low 60s in antioch. we have a little bit of fog out there with partly cloudy skies. if you are he haded into san francisco the bay to breakers, 50s will greet you. and then through 9:00 upper 50s. we will break out into sunshine by 11:00 and low 60s by 1:00. the rest of the bay area, the sea breeze will keep things cool

at the coast. gusting at times to 30 miles an hour. san francisco a high of 64 today. up and 60s around the bay with just mid-70s for our inland valleys. we will talk about our cool down for the beginning of the work week and our warmup in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news out of san jose where two lanes of highway 101 are shut down following a traffic accident involving multiple cars. it happened just after 2:00 this morning near the old oakland road off-ramp. it appears a motorist came across an existing accident. that motorist was hit multiple times by other vehicles. the person was taken to the hospital. no word yet on his or her condition. we will continue to follow the story and have updates as they become available. happening today, we are just hours away from the start of america's oldest iconic footrace, bay to breakers. this year there will be some changes as race organizers and police step up enforcement.

abc7 news reports from south of market where preparations are underway. >> reporter: the starting line to bay to breakers is taking place at howard and main street. it's where 40,000 runners will begin their 8-mile trek across the city to the great highway. >> i can't wait to run! >> suzanne and her three kids came from north carolina. they got their t-shirts. we just wanted to have an excuse to come out here and do something together as a family. we are expecting craziness. we are cool with this. >> new race management wants to curb some of the craziness with no alcohol. no bags or backpacks. nothing on wheels like floats or strollers, and if possible, no nudity. >> we encourage everyone to attend in clothes. it's again in the hopes that itt is a more family friendly environment. >> half of alamo square park is fenced out to keep out drunken

spectators who manage to take it it over every year. the neighbor has seen it all. >> people drinking too much and having to relieve themselves. >> it's a good thing more porta-potties that been placed along the route. but despite that, san francisco's spirit of the race hasn't gone anywhere. >> we're going to be wearing wigs and like tight dresses. i'm not sure we can run the 8 miles, but we are going to try. >> came all the way from texas to run the race and this is my friend rob and he's running in costume. >> what are you going to be? >> i can't tell you. it's a surprise. >> in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> if you plan to come into san francisco for the race, bart will be running earlier than usual this morning with service starting in just an hour at 6:00. trains running before 8:00 will run at 20-minute intervals. and a ferry will make four early

morning trips to the san francisco ferry terminal which is just a few blocks from the start. here's a look at the route. the race begins near the embarcadero, winds its way through the city, through golden gate park and ends at ocean beach. for a full list of road closers, go to abc7news.com. this morning authorities are trying to determine the cause of a fire in san francisco's inner sunset district. the fire started just after 9:00 last night in the garage, spreading to the first and second floors of a home near 15th avenue and irvin street. it took about 15 minutes to bring it under control. no one was hurt but there was concern someone may have been trapped inside. that person was later found safe. the weather is helping crews battling the wildfires in southern california. >> it's one of the most dramatic starts to our season that i've seen. >> and it's going to be a busy fire seen. cal fire has already respond today 100 percent more fires

than normal this time of year. firefighters are still trying to get ahead of the flames in san diego county. kbc news reporter russell hawthorne has the latest. >> reporter: it is relentless out here. cal fire and this crew is showing no signs of fatigue. and homeowner steve anderson couldn't be more grateful. he knows he shouldn't be here. >> i thought there was half a percentage point the house would be here. >> it's still an evacuation zone. >> it just barreled down this valley, this tornado fires coming up in the air. >> cal fire said the roots of the trees are still on fire, making them a danger for falling or flareups. >> this one here, it broke right in the middle.

>> anderson said he's only human. he left his wife in town and hiked in to check things out. >> i lived here about 15 years and i've never seen anything like it. unbelievable how much they did to save our house. >> you guys have done it. impressive. >> in san marcos, russell, abc news. the marines have joined the firefighting efforts in the county. they have been helping local fire agencies by using military aircraft. closer to home helicopter squadron 462 dumped water on fires raging on the north side of camp pendleton. an oakland girl and her family should be celebrating her 9th birthday today you, but she's fighting for her life. she's in critical condition in children's hospital oakland. we show you the scene in east oakland near 66th avenue and

oakland boulevard. she was playing on her front porch when a stray bullet hit her. it came from four houses away. two men drove up and started at the intended target, a man starting in the front yard. the oakland mayor said they are working to find those responsible. >> this is the police department's top priority this year. we have people in the field and we want people to come forward and tell us what they know. >> the intended target of the shoot wag was 47 years old. he was hit twice and is expected to survive. >> this morning a lee-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after nearly drowning in a brentwood swimming pool. it happened around 5:30 yesterday evening. firefighters were able to revive the boy. he was taken by ambulance toizer hospital. a medical helicopter was responded but was cancelled after the boy regained consciousness. three bodies have been recovered and identified from

folsom lake east of sacramento. you may recall we told you about a boat that capsized there. the bodies of 54-year-old man and 53-year-old man were found yesterday afternoon. the body of a 47-year-old man was recovered friday. 48-year-old john smith was also thought to have been aboard the boat when it crashed last saturday. the group's speedboat was believed to have been traveling more than 100 miles an hour before it crashed. eight people were arrested from a sinking canoe yesterday in san mateo county. these are pictures of the screen off coyote point. 8 people were in a canoe that lost a stabilizing pontoon. they were found clinging to its side. they were taken back to shore where they were treated for minor cuts and possible hypothermia. family and friends of a missing 19-year-old man with a

traumatic brain injury are marking the upcoming first anniversary of his disappears in san francisco. shawn was last seen may 21st of last year during a visit to his former high school. he called his father from golden gate park before he disappeared. yesterday's walk for shawn followed what was thought to be the path from school to the park. >> there's a huge community commitment to search for shawn. i think with social media there's a lot more awareness and that families need help. if you don't know someone is missing, you can't look for them basically. shawn's family has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to his situation. a spacecraft is ready to return to earth. the space x is said to leave the international space station and splashdown into the ocean.

it will bring back science samples, including those that help researchers understand plant growth in space. it's set to hit the pacific ocean near baja, california around noon. lisa argen is here with a preview of the accuweather forecast. seems like it's more back to normal. >> you are right. temperatures cool a little closer. here's tower camera. winds in the upper elevations are keeping things a little moldier this morning but by the afternoon we are still looking at a pretty healthy sea breeze. we will look at the numbers and lack add head. >> also ahead, a warning for pet owners. the new concerns about coyotes in the south bay. and imagine getting around the bay area like this. the big announcement from the company that makes this airplane.

>> at&t is another step closer to acquiring giant directv. los angeles times reports the two companies need their boards of directors to approve the $50 billion transaction. an agreement could be reached as early as today. the deal will allow at&t to shut down it's u-verse television service and free up its fiber lines which will increase broad past speed to u-verse customers. a popular restaurant has until tomorrow to show it can fix parking and noise complaints. while the new three story restaurant called hi wo. to. it's been drawing in customers but people say it's also causing

parking and noise problems in a nearby neighborhood. they will build a sound barrier wall and establish long-term parking lesses. coyotes are back. they are causing problems in parts of the south bay. this morning los gatos police are warning residents to keep a eye on pets and small children. >> rocco wasn't expected to survive. >> two here on his back and tail. >> the ten-year-old tabby is still healing after a coyote attack a few weeks ago. it happened in front of this man's house. he scared it off just in time. >> i walked out and saw him in the coyote's mouth. he was moving. but it was -- i didn't think he would survive. >> they really don't. coyotes are aggressive. they travel in packs and are

moving into more of los gatos. rocco was attacked just two blocks from downtown. residents are worried. >> be more aware, more cautious, especially with my son. >> but the problem is coyotes are becoming way too comfortable in these areas. they have even been spotted hunting in thedy time. >> they will go with they can find their elements. >> like food and water and, of course, small animals. there have also been a few human close encounters. joggers and people walking their dogs have reported having coyotes following them and watching them. >> it is squarely. really scary. >> that's why homeowners are banding together and keeping an eye on each other's animals. she was finally able to thank her neighbor. >> thank you for saving him from the coyote! >> lisa amin gulezian, abc7

alameda's south shore center. what will be weather be like, lisa? >> it's going to feel like spring. it has the past couple days. we had our significant cool down yesterday where east bay valleys saw numbers into the low 70s to mid-70s. and today, yeah, we are still going to have the wind at the coast. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. there's an approaching system in the pacific northwest that is allowing for the on shore flow to continue and wrap up. as we get started this morning, skies are partly cloudy. here's a look from emeryville right now. temperatures, with the upper elevation winds, are keeping things a little milder. notice a lot of mid-and upper 50s. oakland good morning, 57. san carlos 57 for you and 50 along the coast. morgan hill 59 from our sutro tower camera. it should be a very pleasant morning for the runners. 59 in novato, 53 napa, and upper 50s concord and livermore checking in at 58 this morning.

from our roof camera, partly cloudy skies. sunny and breezy this afternoon. the fog will bank up along the san mateo coast and we will look for the cooling trend to continue into monday. there's an outside chance of maybe some dry lightning and thunderstorms on tuesday as an area of low pressure passes us to the north. so as we go through the next several hours, some patchy fog here and there but the sea breeze remains and that allows for the temperature spread to be in the 60s and 70s today. notice the orange con tour way out in sacramento. those are the 80s once again. cloud cover will be coming into extreme northern california. even showers there. for us locally we continue to see the temperatures come down by a couple degrees today. so the area of low pressure, you can pick it out here to the north and west of us in that counter clockwise flow around it, keeping the healthy sea breeze coming into the bay. the east bay valleys. and as it passes to the north of us, it will still bring us the

cooler air. in fact, the outside chance of some mountain showers. but for us just increasing the fire danger. so you can see from our state wide map here the precip that is heading into northern california. pretty windy along the coast today. wind advisories are out for southern california, as well. in fact from this point south, 72 in san diego. 61 and windy conditions in the northern sierra. so high temperatures today ranging from the low 60s with fog here. pacifica, half moon bay. breezy winds, gusts up to 30 miles an hour at times. 66 in oakland. look for 68 in fremont. mid-70s vallejo and livermore with about 72 in san jose. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. you will notice highs today very pleasant. it will be breezy, though. by tomorrow we will look for a few more clouds. and that possibility of dry lightning into tuesday. that will allow for the system

>> a super size rendition of a child bath toy is earning celebrity status back east. this 40-foot version of a rub by ducky is on display in the museum of art. it's a floating creation by a duck artist that's taking his creation all over the world. it's bobbing on the waters in the u.s. it's meant to remind people that all living creatures share the same water. the duck will be in los angeles in august. right now there aren't any plans for the duck to come to the bay area but there is a facebook campaign underway to try to bring it here. girls from three south bay high schools spent yesterday building. engineering students from santa clara university hosted the event. they want to encourage girls to pursue a career in science, engineering and technology. they work together on a project

we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, carolyn, good morning. in less than 30 minutes we will have the official sunrise. partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 50s. winds are up over the upper elevations and that's what's keeping it pretty mild out there. 57 by the delta. 53 in napa. we will look for the sea breeze to return today. but in the meantime only cooler air at the coast compared with this time yesterday. everyone else up a few degrees. we will look for the west winds to pick up. the fog and mid-level clouds will continue to clear throughout the morning hours. by 11:00 there is cloud cover from the peninsula and south bay but we are on our way to once again see plenty of sunshine. and i'll look at the cool down for a couple days ahead in a few minutes. lisa, thank you. nigeria's president said the

like i did if they were concerned. and why did it take two days for them to get tired of the media coverage? >> the shelter contacted him and he was able to pick up his dog yesterday. in oakland plans are back in motion to build hundreds of new homes on the site of a former naval hospital. sun cal has repurchased the 165-acre property in the oakland hills. the developer plans to build 960 homes and 82,000 square feet of shops and restaurants at 580 and mountain boulevard. the company lost the land when its real estate partner lay man brothers went bankrupt. sun cal had to buy back the property and the layman brothers estate. in 2005 the land sold for $105 million. sun cal is not saying how much they paid this time around. a group of landlords and renters rallied to improve relationships between the two groups. >> you and i are neighbors and

friends. >> you and i are neighbors and friends! >> yesterday members of the group "betterhousingpolicies.org" marched. leaders say they want changes to housing laws that will encourage small landlords to rent space. they say more units on the market will help drive down housing costs in san francisco. elderly residents of a century old convalescent home in san francisco are wondering where they will live come july. another senior care provider wants to take over the university mound lead's home in san francisco, but at this point the home is planning to close. >> you may not have heard of university mound ladies home, but it's been here in san francisco's better toll law neighborhood since 1884. a gift from james lick, once one of california's wealthiest men. it's a nonprofit whose mission

is affordable, compassion national care for seniors but now the 134-year history of this residential facility may be coming to an end. >> it's very, very nice. >> bonnie has lived here for three years. she and 52 other residents were notified the home will close its doors july 10th. >> it's the beginning of the mission of this home, the ability to generate enough revenue from the resident fees were not adequate to cover the operating costs. >> bill is the interim executive director. >> our number one primary concern is finding new homes. >> trial i don't want to move my mom. >> gene feels the same. he said it would be very difficult for his 91-year-old mother, gloria, to move from
