>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks nor joining us on this sunday, may 18. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, good morning. live doppler 7hd shows a few streaks of high cirrus crowds around the bay and also some low clouds a a couple minutes ago the sunrise. you can see some of the fog floating by in the foreground. just a gorgeous sight this morning. if you head out temperatures are fairly comfortable in the low 50s to the upper 50s around the bay. good running weather for the bay to breakers. we will continue to see some sunshine. a little bit of cloud cover. the wind will kick in in the

afternoon and when they do we will see temperatures in the low 60s. so it will be very comfortable throughout the morning hours. and by the afternoon just mid-60s for the city. another vantage point from our roof camera and the rest of the bay area. we will enjoy upper 60s from the east bay from berkeley to oakland. as you head inland low to mid-70s. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news out of san jose where two lanes of highway 101 are shut down following a traffic accident involving multiple vehicles. it happened just after 2:00 this morning near the old oakland road off-ramp. police say a motorcyclist came across an existing accident and crashed into a disabled car a third vehicle then drove into the area and crashed into a wall. the motorcyclist has been seriously hurt. he's been taken to the hospital. no word yet on his condition. that accident is under

investigation. >> happening today. a san francisco tradition is getting ready to get underway in a few hours. this year there will be big changes in the annual bay to breakers race. >> every year they try to crackdown. >> it seems there's been an introduction of new rules. this year they have new management and they will try toen for the rules. i can tell you right now which are a couple hours out from the start of the race here at the starting line. you can see there are already volunteers and some participants that are gathering at the starting line. in a couple hours an expected 40,000 participants will begin their nearly 8-mile trek across the city to the great highway. again, this year new race management wants to curve some of the past craziness with new

rules. no strollers, and no alcohol, and if possible no nudity. they try to keep the true unique san francisco spirit of this race. >> i am with some girl friends and we will wear wigs and tight dress suppose i'm not sure we can run 8 miles wearing that. we will try. >> i came all the way from texas to run the race. this is my friend rob and he's running in costume. >> what are you going to be? >> i can't tell you. it's a surprise. >> extra police officers will be on the route. they will try to keep out drunken spectators who manage to take it over each here. and more porta-potties have been placed along the route. the start of the race is here. they are going to traverse throughout the city, and this race is going to end over on the great highway at ocean beach. it usually only takes the

frontrunners about half-hour to 45 minutes to get there. reporting live in downtown san francisco, abc7 news. >> i can see the no backpacks, no wheel list, but no alcohol, no nudity, that is going to be a challenge. >> i wonder how they are going to try to enforce the no nudity part. that's the one that always seems to get by somehow. >> exactly. thank you. we will look for you again and thanks for reporting live from the start of the bay to breakers. let's take look at the route. the race begins near the embarcadero. winds its way through the city, through golden gate park and ends at ocean beach. there is a full list of road closer on our website, abc7 news.com. this morning authorities are trying to determine the cause of a fire in san francisco's inner sunset neighborhood.

the fire started just after 9:00 last night in the garage, spreading to the first and second floors of a home near 15th avenue and irvin street. it took about 15 minutes to bring it under control. no one was hurt but there was concern someone may have been trapped inside. that person was later found safe. the weather is helping crews battling the wildfires in southern california. >> it's one of the most dramatic starts to our season that i've seen. >> and it's going to be a busy fire seen. -- season. cal fire has already respond ed to 100 percent more fires than formal this time of the year. firefighters are still trying to get ahead of the flames in san diego county. russell hawthorne has the latest. >> reporter: the heat is relentless out here. cal fire and this crew is showing no signs of fatigue. and homeowner steve anderson

couldn't be more grateful. he knows he shouldn't be here. >> i thought there was half a percentage point the house would be here. >> it's still an active evacuation zone. >> it just barreled down this valley, this tornado fires coming up in the air. >> cal fire said the roots of the trees are still on fire, making them a danger for falling or flareups. >> this one here, it broke right in the middle. >> anderson said he's only human. he left his wife in town and hiked in to check things out. >> i lived here about 15 years and i've never seen anything like it. unbelievable how much they did to save our house. >> you guys have done it. impressive. >> in san marcos, russell, abc news. the marines have joined the firefighting efforts in the county. they have been helping local

fire agencies by using military aircraft. closer to home helicopter squadron 462 dumped water on fires raging on the north side of camp pendleton. an oakland girl and her family should be celebrating her 9th birthday today, but she's fighting for her life. she's in critical condition in children's hospital oakland. we show you the scene in east oakland near 66th avenue and international boulevard. the girl was playing on her front church when a stray bullet hit her. it came from four houses away. two men drove up and started at the intended target, a man starting in the front yard. the oakland mayor said they are working to find those responsible. >> this is the police department's top priority this week. we have people in the field and we want people to come forward and tell us what they know. >> you are media partner, "the

oakland tribune" reports the intended target of the shooting is 47 years old. he was hit twice. he is expected to survive. >> this morning a three-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after nearly drowning in a brentwood swimming pool. it happened around 5:30 yesterday evening. firefighters were able to revive the boy. he was taken by ambulance to keiser hospital. a medical helicopter was responded but was cancelled after the boy regained consciousness. three bodies have been recovered and identified from folsom lake east of sacramento. you may recall we told you about a boat that capsized there. that was a week ago with four men on board. the coroner's office said the bodies of 54-year-old man and 53-year-old man were found yesterday afternoon. the body of a 47-year-old man was recovered friday. 48-year-old john smith was also thought to have been aboard the boat when it crashed last saturday. the group's speedboat was

believed to have been traveling more than 100 miles an hour before it crashed. eight people were arrested from a sinking canoe yesterday in san mateo county. these are pictures of the screen off coyote point. 8 people were in a canoe that lost a stabilizing pontoon. they were found clinging to its side. they were taken back to shore where they were treated for minor cuts and possible hypothermia. >> happening now, the space x dragon spacecraft is ready to return to earth. a live look from nassau tv. you see the control room there. space x is said to depart the international space station and flash down into the pacific ocean. it will bring back more than 3,000 pounds of nassau science samples, including those that will help researchers understand plant growth in space. the spacecraft is scheduled to hit the pacific ocean near baja,

still healing after a coyote attack a few weeks ago. it happened in front of this man's house. he scared it off just in time. >> i walked out and saw him in the coyote's mouth. he was moving. but it was -- i didn't think he would survive. >> they really don't. coyotes are aggressive. they travel in packs and are moving into more of los gatos. rocco was attacked just two blocks from downtown. residents are worried. >> be more aware, more cautious, especially with my son. >> but the problem is coyotes are becoming way too comfortable in these areas. they have even been spotted hunting in the daytime. >> they are an aggressive animal. they will go where they can find what they need. >> like food and water and, of course, small animals. there have also been a few human close encounters. joggers and people walking their dogs have reported having

lower part of your screen and high clouds above. temperatures mainly in the mid-and upper 50s. the breeze has allowed for the mild start. good morning morgue again hill. upper 50s for you and 54 in san francisco and 52 in half moon bay. temperatures low 50s santa rosa, 56 by the delta. and livermore right now is at 55 degrees. and about another 20 degrees of warming on top today for a nice spring afternoon. more clouds in the south bay. this morning we are looking at the partly cloudy skies. sunny and breezy at the coast this afternoon. the cooling trend continues today into tomorrow as an area of low pressure heads into northern california. that will allow for the sea breeze to continue to bring that cooler air across the bay. so here's a look at the cloud cover. you will notice that most of the fog, once again, banked up along the san mateo coast. and also that sea breeze allowing for the temperatures to

stay just in the 60s for pacifica, half moon bay, stinson beach. but you head a little inland and we will have the 70s from santa clara and maybe a couple 80s further out as you go into the sacramento volley. but for us today temperatures feeling a little bit more like we should for this season. an area of low pressure you can see the counter clockwise flow to this and that keeps the sea breeze right over the bay. and with the sunshine today it should be a pleasant afternoon. although we will continue to see the cooling effect from the low by tomorrow. it's spreading some showers in extreme northern california. higher elevations, the mountains, could see a thunderstorm and for the bay area maybe some dry lightning. we aren't going to see any moisture from any of the cloud cover. we see on monday. but the possibility for high fire danger as the low passes overhead. 83 in sacramento. so cooling down there with some breezy winds from the central

coast into the southern california. the mountains, as well. gusty winds. 98 palm springs. 60s and 70s should do it today with 71 in palo alto. 69 san mateo. look for 70 in santa cruz. mid-70s for concord and vallejo today. by the delta 77 trees. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. further cooling tomorrow. possibility of a thunderstorm higher elevations and the dry lightning. then the high fire danger behind it. we get high pressure building back in that stay lies the atmosphere. 60s coast, 70s around the bay. keeping it very pleasant right through the weekend. we are looking at memorial day on monday. >> and not this monday, of course, we are talking next weekend. >> yes. >> up next, a science project for girls only. a look at how a local group of engineering students is trying to inspire the next generation.

northeastern part of the country. this summer in paris, they discussed the islamic group and nigerian president warned of a growing trend. >> al-qaeda in south africa. it's no longer just that area, education is prohibited. >> some leaders have agreed to work together to liberate the girls. >> i think it's now become our girls. not just nigeria's girls, it's the world's girls. >> families are angry. there's a slowing response to free their daughters. they no longer believe nigeria's military alone can bring the girls home. it's clear the u.s. and western allies don't really trust the nigerians to do this properly and there's obvious suspicion from the nigerians about what the u.s. is doing here. all that must be overcome before the girls can be found and

brought home. abc news, nigeria. >> a san jose man is reunited with his puppy after someone thought they were doing the right thing by stealing his dog. charlie, the beagle, and his owner were on the way to tahoe thursday when they stopped at a costco near sacramento. it was in the middle of the day so david said he parked in the shade and rolled down his window. but 20 minutes later he said charlie was gone. someone took him and left a note that read water your dog or leave it at home. yesterday that took charlie dropped him off at a shelter. they could have called 911 just like i did if they were concerned about the health of the dog. why does it take two days for them to get tired of the media coverage? >> the shelter contacted the man and he was able to pick up his dog yesterday.

in oakland plans are back in motion to build hundreds of new homes on the site of a former naval hospital. sun cal has repurchased the 165-acre property in the oakland hills. the developer plans to build 960 homes and 82,000 square feet of shops and restaurants at 580 and mountain boulevard. the company lost the land when its real estate partner lehman brothers went bankrupt. sun cal had to buy back the property from the lehman brothers estate. in 2005 the land sold for $105 million. sun cal is not saying how much they paid this time around. >> a senior care wants to take over a university ladies home, but at this point the facility is planning to close. >> you may not have heard of university mound ladies home. but it's been here in

san francisco bartolo neighborhood since 1884. a gift from james lik, once one of california's wealthiest's men. it's affordable, compassion national care for seniors. but now the 134-year history of this residential facility may be coming to an end. >> they said they would close. it's a very, very nice facility. >> bonnie has lived here for three years. she and 52 other residents were notified the home will close its doors july 10th. >> since the beginning of the mission of this home, the ability to generate enough revenue from the resident fees were not adequate to cover the operating costs. >> bill is the interim executive director. >> our number one primary concern is finding new homes. >> i don't want to move my mom.

>> gene feels the same. he said it would be very difficult for his 91-year-old mother, gloria, to move from what he calls a wonderful place. >> we came for the convenience and price, but we stayed because of the level of care that people provide here. it's phenomenal. >> six years ago they faced a financial challenge here but a concerted community effort kept the doors open. now another player in the senior care business wants to step in and is proposing to work with the nonprofit pacific institute to acquire the ladies home. that proposal, along with others, is being evaluated. >> time is short. they have to work to find a solution. >> and 53 elderly women and men are counting on that. still ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news, an innovative method of keeping the bay area's water supply flowing in case after major earthquake. here is a live look from our

>> welcome back, everyone. it's 6:44 on this sunday morning. thank you for waking up with us and watching the abc7 sunday morning news. this is a live look from our roof cam showing you the ferry building. it is cool and breezing this morning. good running weather for bay to breakers. those runners will gather near those flag poles in just over an hour to run all the way to the ocean. >> in response to the ongoing drought, officials may ask people to stop pulling water from the russian reservoir. they could order people to stop doing so as early as tomorrow. the goal would be to ensure there's enough water to protect salmon and steelhead.

san francisco water bills may be going up by seven dollars to month. the public utility commission approved the increase last week to make improvements to the system that brings water to the bay area from the reservoir. we have a look at a plan to keep water moving in the event of an earthquake. >> from the ground it looks like any other construction site but go below ground and you sea why it's special. >> the hayward falls runs below this area. the hayward fault. >> keeping this pipe working in a major earthquake means securing the water fly supply for millions of people in the bay area. >> this is designed to protect the pipes. make sure the pipes are intact after an earthquake. >> alex overseas this project for the san francisco public utilities commission. he showed us around. it is like a giant room that surrounds the pipe.

it is allowed to move if there's an earthquake, down the middle the 72-inch pipe keeps water flowing. engineers designed two the largest ball joints ever manufactured to make sure it stays intact. this animation shows how the two work together. when a quake hits the pipe will sway and the walls will move. >> it's designed for up to 6 1/2 feet of earth movement. >> the new pipes will replace those built in 1952 and 1973. it will deliver up to 2.3 million customers. $392 million project is paid for by taxpayers. they approved the $4.6 billion water project to replace the water system the system of pipes, dams and reservoirs carries water from yosemite national park, across the central valley and into the south bay before going up the peninsula to san francisco.

>> the problem with the hetch hetchy program, we have to deliver water within 24 hours of a earthquake. >> work on the project is expected to be completed early next year. dan ashley, abc7 news. much of the work on the hetch hetchy up grades have been completed. 80% of the project is finished. >> lisa is just getting started with the weather forecast. fine-tuning the seque there. minute by minute. a pretty nice looking morning for the bay to breakers race. we will slowly climb to the lower 60s throughout the latter morning. you see some of the higher clouds over the bay. the cirrus clouds making it pretty. we have the low clouds be below and city between. very dramatic with temperatures ranking from the mid-50s half

moon bay in san francisco and upper 50s oakland, san carlos and morgan hill. the roof camera shows a little bit of a breeze out there. this continues to ramp up throughout the afternoon. here the embarcadero. west wind. 53 napa, 56 fairfield, 55 in livermore. upper elevations are looking at some gusty win. and with the gusty winds that has allowed for temperatures to stay a little milder this morning. anywhere from two to nine grease milder in general but along the coast a little cooling and a look at the upper elevation winds, 23 miles an hour up in the north bay with our east bay hills about 28 mile-an-hour gusts. so we will continue to see the gusty winds at the coast. sunshine on the way for san jose. looking for a pretty temperate day today. partly cloudy this morning with sunny and breezy conditions this afternoon banked up along the san mateo coast. keeping it cool there. and the tool trend continues into tomorrow as this area of

low pressure allows for that sea breeze to stay rather healthy along the coast. as it moves in. it will allow for the temperatures to keep them in check. just 60s and 730s. the lows and to the north of us, with that the possibility of thunderstorms. northern california, also the mountains. no moisture associated the extra cloud cover for us and maybe some dry lightning into tuesday. then it increases the fire danger. we are looking at the cooling trend in southern california. winds still pretty erratic and gusty from southern california. 75 los angeles and in the mountains it's been windy, lake tahoe 61 and 75 yosemite. temperatures around the bay with the cloud cover from san mateo and the gusty winds. it will be cool. low 60s from pacifica and half moon bay. stinson beach 64. 71 san rafael, 74 santa rosa and

livermore. as you are head today at&t block, you know the drill. it will be breezy throughout the afternoon. bring the facts and temperatures mainly in the low to mid-60s. should be pretty typical there. the accuweather seven-day forecast, a little further cooling tomorrow and then the temperatures begin to rebound come tuesday. a few more 80s coming into play for the middle and the latter part of the week but notice we aren't looking at any 90ths. pretty pleasant with a slow and gradual warm-up wednesday through next weekend. >> those 90s, we are off the hook. >> yu. >> and a few 100s, too. >> thanks, lisa. let's check out sports. this morning the a's will try to sweep their weekend series in cleveland. last night oakland overcame some adversity to beat the indians. here's mike shumann with the highlights and this morning's sports. >> good morning. well, the a's have been the king of swing in cleveland. no one more for rock n' roll.
