good morning, america. this morning, new battle. firefighters in southern california confront a new blaze, just as they're starting to get the upper hand on the ferocious fires that have burned over 25,000 acres. this, as people are now starting to return to what remains of their homes. >> and it was our dream house, you know? we just put all of our souls into it. mers spreads. the deadly virus has, for the first time, been transmitted on american soil. how did this happen? and how worried should we be? dr. besser is here with answers. they're off in the preakness. >> america's horse. california chrome erupts on the home stretch to win the preakness. >> california chrome has won the preakness. >> galloping closer to the elusive triple crown.

a photojournalist got a load of fire retardant up on him to fight the flames to stop the flames dropped on him from a dc-10 supertanker. >> bazi kanani reports this morning from san diego. bazi, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. firefighters are making good progress. and officials expect all evacuation orders will be lifted by later today. many more families returning to find just how close the blames got to their homes and some, like the owners of this home, finding nothing left. the fight in san diego county. this morning, firefighters are still working to contain four of the ten wildfires tearing through the county since tuesday. this new one erupting saturday. three of the fires are burning on camp pendleton. marines there, joining the aerial assault on the flames. some of them, just back from a different fight in afghanistan. more than 1,000 firefighters called in. 25,000 acres scorched. one dead. and already, nearly $20 million

in damage. this driver, learning just how quickly the wildfires are moving when the flames fly up the hillside, over homes and nearly right up to his wheels. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: what's lost for many families is priceless. >> we used to have two giant pillars that supported the house. >> reporter: the gilmore family in carlsbad, now digging to salvage memories. just hours before his senior prom, 18-year-old adam recovered one of the few remaining mementos of his childhood. >> one of the few things was a woody little toy here. it's pretty burnt to a crisp. >> reporter: these inmate crews are now working together with firefighters to get control of the wildfires. cooler temperatures and calmer winds are helping them get the upper hand, but it's just not enough to reduce the fire danger here and across the state. two-thirds of california in extreme drought after another winter and spring with almost no rain.

fire officials are pleading with residents to get serious about pfeifer prevention saying it doesn't take much in conditions like these to start a major fire. they say the first fire here was started by sparks from a construction vehicle. bianna? >> they're still on alert for more flare-ups. bazi, thank you. meantime, homeowners are beginning to return to the ashes. heartbreaking scenes as they pick through the rubble trying to salvage anything they can and summon the strength to rebuild their homes and their lives. we were there as bob and sophie payne returned to what was once their dream house. >> welcome to our home. >> it was our dream house. you know? we just put all our souls into it. >> it had a sprinkler system. but it got so hot that the sprinkler system didn't do any good. >> the plants, as you can see, they're dead. and then our big kitchen with a big nook. you can see the stool's still standing, kind of. >> last saturday, we had my daughter's wedding reception here.

tell us, how did this person, a man, get mers? >> yeah, so about two weeks ago, we talked about the first case of the middle east respiratory syndrome in an american worker from indiana who worked in saudi arabia. as part of the investigation, they tested everyone who had had close contact with him, and the person that they found just yesterday was one of those people who had contact. but the contact wasn't extreme. he'd two meetings with the indiana worker. the longest was for 40 minutes and involved face-to-face contact and a handshake. good news is, he's well. no signs of the disease. >> but does the fact that he got it just from a handshake concern you? >> that's very concerning. the big focus has been on very close contact. so, health care workers, family members who live together. here, 40 minutes and a handshake is not what we would normally consider close contact. and so, they're going to want to see, has the virus changed? or can it spread easier than we thought? >> so, only three cases thus far. we do know the virus can be deadly. so, should we be worried about this? >> clearly, if you're going to the arabian peninsula, you want

to follow the cdc guidelines for protection. here, they're going to check everyone who came in contact with this new case to see, did they pick up the infection? has something changed? i don't think people need to be alarmed about this. but it's very good that they're checking to see have there been changes and do we need to take different kinds of protection? >> given that you worked so many years at the cdc, it's a relief to hear you say that we shouldn't get alarmed by this. rich, thank you very much. appreciate it. meantime, let's turn to ron with the other headlines overnight. hey, ron. >> hey, good morning to you, bianna and dan. good morning, everyone. we begin overseas in nigeria where a new military offensive is under way to try to liberate hundreds of kidnapped girls snatched from their school now more than a month ago. sources in nigeria's joint task force are telling abc news, they believe boko haram is hiding at least some of the girls in caves in the northeastern part of that country. the u.s. and u.k. are providing surveillance support from the air. and, meanwhile, at a southern summit meeting in paris on saturday nigeria's president warned of the growing threat of boko haram linking it to al qaeda.

several leaders of african countries at that meeting said they would wage war against boko haram and work together to try to liberate the girls. and a cabinet shakeup in the obama administration. the president will tap san antonio's mayor julian castro to head the department of housing and urban development. he would replace shean donovan who will be nominated to be budget director. castro is a three-term mayor of san antonio, who delivered the keynote address at the 2012 democratic national convention and is believed to be a rising star in the democratic party. and an unprecedented new law in colorado has been the first state to enact a so-called right to try bill allowing terminally ill patients access to experimental medications even when the drugs are years from government approval. similar measures are pending in two other states. the fda says it is concerned about efforts that, in its words, undermine its ability to protect the public from therapies that aren't safe and effective. and a terrifying crash in little ferry, new jersey.

the driver of a pickup truck lost control of his car, sending him into oncoming traffic, before plunging off this bridge. luckily, a billboard sign stopped the car from crashing any further below. the driver managed to climb out of the dangling truck, onto the billboard and to safety. he walked away unharmed, but the bridge is going to need a lot of work to repair. and bring on the belmont. california chrome, the chestnut colt, won the preakness. and now has his eye set on horse racing's elusive triple crown. >> california chrome has won the preakness. >> reporter: california chrome came flying down the stretch to win the preakness by a length and a half. just two weeks ago, the 3-year-old colt won the kentucky derby. california chrome is from humble origins. the offspring of two horses that cost their owners $10,000. one of them, a line factory worker willing to gamble his money on a gut feeling. >> but california chrome shines bright in the kentucky derby.

>> reporter: now, having won the first two jewels in horse racing's triple crown, he's grabbed the attention of the whole country. >> california chrome has won the preakness. >> i just want everybody to know that this horse is america's horse. >> reporter: it's been 36 years now since the last triple crown winner, affirmed. >> it's going to be affirmed. affirmed is going to win the 101st running of the kentucky derby. >> reporter: with the belmont in just three weeks, california chrome's trainer joked about what could prevent his colt from winning the so-called test of champions. >> my concern is sometimes the weather. my biggest concern, that he doesn't catch a cold. >> and since 1978, 12 horses have gone to post at the belmont, having won the derby and the preakness. all 12 lost that race. so, affirmed back in 1978. i was at that race. and, look, go to youtube and check out the belmont in 1978. an amazing race.

way we haven't seen in a while. the clintons are everywhere. the biggest tag team in politics. there's hillary defending bill. >> my husband gave a lecture at georgetown recently where he walked through the numbers. yes, a rising tide really did lift all boats. >> reporter: and bill defending hillary. >> now, they say she's really got brain damage. if she does, i must be in really tough shape because she's still quicker than i am. >> reporter: in the past week alone, the clintons made 14 public appearances. in speeches, at museum openings and even squeezing in time for the extended family. campaigning for chelsea's mother-in-law, who is running for congress in pennsylvania. barely a day passing by when they weren't making headlines. >> hi, everybody. >> reporter: sometimes more than president obama. so, is all this a prelude to a 2016 presidential run? she played coy in barbara walters' farewell appearance on "the view." >> the question i want to ask is are you going to run? >> well, i am running, around the park.

>> reporter: republicans are following every word and striking back on how secretary of state hillary clinton handled the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, and even raising questions about her health. >> she had a serious health episode. this will be an issue in the 2016 race, whether she likes it or not. >> reporter: of course, we still don't know if she's running for anything. she likely won't make that decision until the end of the year. now, the question surrounding hillary clinton's plans will only intensify when her book is released next month. but republicans have something else in mind. that special congressional committee investigating the benghazi attacks will get under way this summer, with her role as secretary of state back in the spotlight. bianna? >> still so much scrutiny there, jeff. but 14 public appearances in 1 week for the couple. the clintons are one of the big stories our george stephanopoulos will be talking about this morning on "this week." and george joins us now. so, george, everyone from the right, the left, the center is talking about hillary clinton. i was struck by bill collins

which he wrote in "the times" op-ed yesterday, "hillary wants to be president so people will stop talking about her. >> the obama model, exactly. the clintons are catnip for the media. there's no question about that. and part of the reason they're getting so much attention right now is because washington is paralyzed, as well. not a lot of news coming out of there. but there's a little bit more going on. number one, karl rove and his questions about hillary clinton's age and health. the republicans know that she's unlikely to have significant opposition in the democratic party. so, they have to start their campaign early and in some ways try to make her old news by the time 2016 comes around. and the clintons had to respond forcefully to this one because these questions about age and health always come up in presidential campaigns. they can be serious questions. they know they have to rebut this with real force. and that's what they did. >> and yet, there's so much speculation about fresh faces. what is your take on julian castro joining the administration? is he the one to watch in 2016? >> it's the second time he was asked by president obama to be join the cabinet. he turned down a chance to be transportation secretary. apparently thought it was a idea

now. very good chance that he would be, especially if hillary clinton got the nomination, on the short list for vice president. no question about it now. hard for democrats to win texas. but to have an hispanic on the ticket in 2016 when the republican party and all their trouble over immigration with hispanics could be quite powerful. >> he is from texas. and he would be 42 at the time. george will have much more on this topic coming up later on abc's "this week." dan? >> always a relief to hear you describe 42 as young. thank you for that. >> that is young. from all of the political food fighting to a real food fight, specifically a dog food fight, two pet food companies are barking at one another in court. and abc's linzie janis is on the story. linzie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. purina and blue buffalo are locked in a nasty battle. and it's all about what's inside those bags of dog and cat food. blue buffalo is accusing purina of orchestrating a smear campaign that falsely attacks the quality of its ingredients.

purina is accusing buffalo blue of false advertising. meanwhile, pet owners are stuck in the middle, wondering if they're getting what they're paying for. this morning, a legal battle between pet food companies over what we feed our beloved companions is getting uglier. >> when you love them like family, you want to feed them like family. >> reporter: in one corner, blue buffalo, calling itself one of the fastest growing dog and cat food brands in america. and in the other, one of the biggest brands, purina. blue buffalo claims its pet food is free of chicken and poultry by-products and offers some grain-free varieties. >> i compared my big-name cat food to blue. it was clear. blue has everything i wanted and none of the stuff i didn't one. >> reporter: but purina says, that's just not true. last week filing a lawsuit against blue buffalo for false advertising. the suit alleges testing at an independent lab found significant percentages of poultry by-product meal in blue

buffalo's top-selling life protection products and that some of its grain-free products contain rice or corn. but now, blue buffalo is biting back with a countersuit refuting purina's claims about its ingredients and claiming defamation. in a statement on its website, purina says, "we stand by our complaint." >> it's really important that owners are getting what they pay for and that it's really accurate. >> reporter: and with american pet owners expected to spend nearly $23 billion this year on food for these treasured members of the family, the stakes are high. well, for dog owners that annual breakdown is about $240 a year. but the market for premium food is growing the fastest, with more pet parents seeking nutritious and natural food for their dogs. dan, i know you're a cat owner. what do you buy? >> i have no idea. my wife is in charge of the cat food. i just open it and feed it to them sometimes. >> but, as you mentioned, it's a billion dollar industry.

let's check the forecast now with erika martin, meteorologist from wtnh in new haven. she's here with a look at the weather. good morning, erika. >> good morning, everybody. now, conditions along the western seaboard is looking a lot better. we do have a cooldown here. sea surface temperatures between 50 and 60 degrees fahrenheit. the good news, much cooler conditions. fire weather is improving here. 73 for oceanside. 76 for santa barbara. and even though we do have some developing fog, we do need some moisture. so that's certainly some good news, however the same cannot be said for parts of arizona and new mexico. the texas panhandle also seeing fire weather danger. conditions will top out in the triple digits for phoenix and tucson. so, be mindful of that. conditions very dry and very gusty. gusts could reach up to 45 miles, 55 miles per hour, now, the midwest and the eastern seaboard, it's a cool start to the day. we have 38 in charleston and cincinnati. pittsburgh, 43 degrees. and we're also seeing a frost advisory issued for nine states. now, our live camera over new york city looking pretty nice

video, allegedly followed 73-year-old elizabeth conklin to her home wednesday. >> i drove home, and i drove into my parking garage, and i parked in my normal parking place, and i got out, and then, all of a sudden, i woke up in an ambulance. >> reporter: according to police, hansen intentionally struck conklin with her vehicle. conklin says she would have been hit again if one of her neighbors hadn't stepped in, smashing the rear car window with a crowbar. >> he saw her in her car, getting ready to hit me again. he totally saved my life. >> reporter: feeling lucky to escape with some bumps and bruises, conklin has her own ideas about what motivated the apparent attack. >> she saw my car. it was the car she wanted. she followed me. she was going to kill me and get the car. >> reporter: and just hours before the alleged assault, hansen posting to facebook that her life was falling into place writing, quote, i am becoming a professional.

an illinois man came into contact with an indiana man, who earlier this month became the first person in the u.s. with the virus. the two men met twice during a meeting and exchanged a handshake. and a freight train goes off the rails in scottsburg, indiana. this is on saturday, coming dangerously close to some homes. how or why the train derailed is still unclear. we're told engineers heard a pop and then a section immediately behind the engine left the tracks. and finally, not so fast. in the seventh stage of the tour of california bicycle race, spanish cyclist eloy teruel, celebrates as he crosses the finish line. one problem, there's still one lap to go. >> oh, no. >> yeah. the announcers, even the fans tried to signal him to keep going, but he appeared too hyped up to notice. by the time he figured it out, he had fallen behind and lost to slovakia's peter sagan who went on to win that race. talk about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. he experienced both. >> yes. within a nanosecond. >> yes. >> why is everyone helping me? >> i won.

tonight, as a hologram, at the billboard music awards. ♪ you know it's thriller >> reporter: in his appearance, michael jackson is set to twist, thrust and moonwalk back into music. but m.j.'s comeback is littered with controversy. ♪ i'm bad, i'm bad >> reporter: in an emergency lawsuit filed thursday, the two companies with rights to the hologram technology tried to pull the curtain on jackson's return stating they will suffer irreparable injury in the form of price erosion, loss of goodwill, damage to reputation and loss of business opportunities. the court, striking down the lawsuit, allowing the show to go on. >> they can still pursue this case. they can still try to get money damages. they can still try to prove that their patent was violated. >> reporter: in a statement obtained by abc news, jackson's estate said it wasn't surprised by the court's decision. the request to stop this extraordinary michael jackson event was ludicrous. you are all in for an incredible experience. ♪
