still iconic and offbeat but not everything went as planned during this year's bay-to-breakers race. a live report on the infamous aftermag of the race. a sign tonight that fire crews are gaining control of the majority of wildfires near san diego. abc7 news at 5:00 starts now. it was pretty crazy. there was -- i think i counted 12 people totally nude. >> runners mix width offbate revelers for the 103rd run of the bay bay-to-breakers race. despite a delay motion police and more rules kept things calmly moving during the bay-to-breakers race, but in keeping with tradition there was flash of outrageousness in the

crowd. organizers say they're serious about the future of the race. we have team coverage. sir gentleman quintana was there from start to finish. reporter: from sky 7hd you can see the first wave of runners leave the starting line. they were a little late because of a problem with cav holding. >> a couple pieces of infrastructure that needed to be completely secure. they were, and once be that the green light we started the race. >> it only took the lead runners 35 minutes to cross the finish line, but everyone was delayed by 25 minutes. for the elite runners of the race, the delay was an issue. >> we're a little cold. when i start my legs were tight because i warmed up but then i got cold again. >> diane johnson was the first female return across the finish line, 40:10. the aim of the new management

team is to turn bay-to-breakers back into a runners' event. >> in late '80s, almost 80,000 registered runners. i a true runner even. a couple years ago it became more of a speck >> there were plenty of cost can tsunamis and scantily clad participant. it was still a fun event. this is his 40th run. >> a really good job and last year a great job, so it's going to continue like think. it's a safer environment. >> there were more than thousands runners registered for the race inch san san francisco. >> our team coverage continue with cornell bernard with a rook at the effort to keep crowds calm and clean up. a different approach this year. reporter: and police and a no

tolerance policy for alcohol helped make bay bay-to-breakersa safer event. only a handful of people were arrested for being drunk in public and part of this chain-link fence around the square just blew town, about it was a big success. it helped keep neighbors happy and kept rowdy partyers out. the bay-to-breakers may be over but the memories and the trash linger on. after 40,000 runners and spectators moved through. city crews got to work sweeping streets, taking down fences, and washing the race course clean. controlling the partyers was another story. >> move back. >> extra police along the route enforced the no-alcohol policy. many had their booze taken away and dumped out. >> a lot of dumping. at 0 least the cops have been doing a good job of controlling. >> dwight was cleaning up his

own sidewalk on fell street. >> it was better this year. a little less public intoxication. less urinating. but still it's a challenge. reporter: check out the trash left behind in the panhandle to golden gate park. alamo square was a different story. half the park was fenced off, police on duty use, after too many complaints from neighbors about drunken spectators. >> with the closure of alamo square it was big advantage. we were able to ensure that the public was safe and there was no public safety issues inside the square, able to limit the intoxication and alcohol drinking. reporter: neighbors say it worked. holly butler is happy. >> my first year here but i'm glad they closed the parks. i was worried about the trash, and now it's clean. reporter: in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> breaking news out of san francisco. at a popular dog bark.

san francisco firefighters say man and his dog win over a cliff this afternoon -- went over a cliff this afternoon. firefighters repelled down the cliff and brought both the man and dog to safety. fortunately no one was hurt. you can see the firefighters there and the man some the dog coming back up. the chp says an accident led to two others on highway 101 in san jose just after 2:00 this morning near the oakland road offramp. a motorcyclists came across an accident and then crashed into a disabled car. the chp reports the motorcycle was hit three times by other vehicles. one car then slammed into a wall. the motorcyclists was seriously hurt. that stretch of 101 was shut down for several hours. a map faces charms -- a man faces charges for attacking 0 woman at a shopping mall yesterday afternoon at the plant shopping center. a woman started screaming, getting the tapings of nearby shoppers who alerted police. officers saw the sexual assault in progress. they arrested a transient,

59-year-old michael garcia, of san jose. san jose police are asking for your help to locate an at-risk man who is missing. 52-year-old joseph twitchle walked away from the holly's home care facility yesterday afternoon. he suffered a severe head injury and police say he has a mental capacity of a ten-year-old. he is known to frequent the 7-eleven store near blossom hill road in san jose. new details on the san diego wildfires. emergency officials lift all evacuation orders today as crews gained the upper hand on four remaining fires. a dozen wildfires burned in the san diego area this past week. ocean breezes and temperatures helped firefighters make significant progress. the fires, which span 39 square miles, destroyed at least 47 houses. returning home meant relief and

grief. >> we did our crying the first night or two. now it's time to go on with our lives. >> a wonderful blessing to be back at home. i was almost teary-eyed kind of thing. it's wonderful. governor brown is warning this could be the drought stricken region's worst wildfire season ever. >> very serious fire season, so we have to watch and be very careful. the california department of forestry and fire protection has responded to more than 1500 fires this year compared to 800 total during an average year. fire crews in san rafael took aggressive action against a brush fire this morning, keeping it contained to half acre. six other nearby fire departments were called in to help because san rafael cries were fighting a house fire. the brush fire started at the end of spring grove avenue.

the fire chief says evidence of camping materials was found in the area. the state may step in tomorrow and order people to stop pulling water from the russian river. at it considered a drastic move forced by the drought. state officials are considering curtailing rights to draw water from the river. the goal would be to ensures there is enough water to protect salmon and steelhead. water officials said the move would not affect water already in reservoirs but could prevent more from being collected. a nearly $50 billion broadcast deal just brokered today that could affect your cable company. we'll have details jew also, back on earth, the bay area's connection to the space mission and muni thinks it's come up with a way to ease overcrowding but some passengers won't be taking the idea sitting down. >> i'm in the accuweather

a popular new millbrae restaurant has until tomorrow to show it can solve neighbor complaints. residents saw the new restaurant on el camino real is causing problems withnoise and parking. and residents complain about the smell of chinese food being blown into their homes by loud kitchen fans. the restaurant has until tomorrow to build a sound barrier wall and establish long-term parking leases.
