it is so good to see you, michael. >> yes. it was a moment. >> it was. we'll solve the mystery ahead. we begin with breaking news. an unprecedented crackdown on cybercrime for the first time ever the u.s. is directly targeting a foreign government. abc's chief justice consultant pierre thomas. pierre, that target is china. >> reporter: good morning, george. we're expecting big news in the war against cybercrime. abc news learned for the first time ever the u.s. government is going to accuse another country of hacking u.s. business interests to gain unfair economic advantage. the diplomacy implications are enormous as the justice department is expected to announce criminal charges as early as today against government officials in a foreign country. as you say china is the focus. intelligence officials have long believed that the chinese government has been engaged in a state-sponsored hacking and economic espionage stealing so much research and development from u.s. companies that it's affecting national security, george. >> so, pierre, can the fbi can actually arrest chinese officials and how do they expect the chinese to respond?

>> reporter: that's the prickly issue, george. these government officials are international fugitives but it'll be difficult if they don't leave china. as far as the response, unclear how the chinese will respond since this has never happened before but they probably won't like it. >> this is a big day. another major crackdown on an international ring that's reaching right into american homes. >> that's right. a huge case expected out of new york today where prosecutors will announce the results of an international takedown that will show how hackers can touch you right in your home. these hackers arrested in more than 18 countries developing software, allowing criminals to secretly take control of home computers. they can monitor as people use them for financial transactions and in some cases can turn on your home computers and secretly film you in your bedrooms. >> wow. so many dangers online. pierre, thanks so much. >> big news right there. to that potentially deadly respiratory virus, mers is on the move this morning. the very first case transmitted right here on u.s. soil. abc's steve osunsami has the latest and joins us from cdc headquarters in atlanta.

good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, robin. investigators here at the cdc say they are still not 100% sure how this disease is spread. it's the first known transmission of this potentially deadly respiratory disease on u.s. soil. an illinois businessman testing possible for mers on friday. his first test was negative. he never felt sick. doctors had already sent him home for two weeks then cleared him for travel when they discovered that his body had fought and killed the virus. here's how they think he caught it. he had extended face-to-face contact with patient number 1, an indiana man who flew in with the disease from saudi arabia. they had two 40-minute meetings, sat six feet apart and shook hands. health officials are watching anyone who had close contact with both men. >> we're offering the opportunity to be tested and reassured and exclude it. >> reporter: the cdc says it's still much easier to catch the flu or the common cold telling

us most new cases will come from the arabian peninsula. >> travel season is to the peninsula is about to kick off. we've got pilgrimage holidays and ramadan coming up at the end of june. >> reporter: this morning, health departments in at least 30 states are working with federal health officials to track down passengers who shared flights with patient number 1 and patient number 2 who had to be hospitalized in orlando. both men flew from saudi arabia. they underline that this is a new disease. that it isn't terribly contagious but does kill, more than 160 people have already died from this. most of them in the middle east. robin. >> we do have to keep that in mind. thank you. for more we turn to dr. richard besser who spent many years there at the cdc. in fact, that's where you were before we were lucky enough to have you join us. remind us again what mers is. >> stands for the middle eastern respiratory syndrome and it's a respiratory infection that can lead to pneumonia and the concerning thing is that up to a

third of people, 30%, can die from this infection. >> the concern about its spreading here in the u.s. where does that stand? >> this weekend it was really a big turn in this investigation. the concerning thing is the person who got the infection only spent 40 minutes with the infected patient. 40 minutes face to face and a handshake. that's very concerning. the encouraging thing is although he was infected, he didn't get sick. his body fought it off. >> we don't know if that's the norm. that has to be of concern. >> i talked to the cdc last night. how serious really is this infection? how serious is this infection? could there be a lot of people that get it but have no problem? until they answer it they'll be all over it. >> yeb -- yes, they're going to stay on it. thanks. there was a big move in the business world. a blockbuster merger that could create major changes in how we pay for television and connect to the internet. at&t is buying directv for nearly $50 billion and abc's david kerley is here with what these details could mean for

you, good morning, david. >> reporter: this deal is about getting bigger and competing with other behemoths who want to be the ones that you pay for your internet connection and tv. the $48 billion deal, which will launch at&t deeper into tv space quickly, provides not only satellite content but also be able to provide tv on mobile phones as well. adding directv's 20 million subscribers will make the phone company number two behind comcast and comcast is also trying to get bigger as we speak attempting to convince regulators that it should be allowed to buy time warner. that would solidify its position as number one, the number one source for pay content. now, the bigger these companies are, george, the more leverage they have with the producers of that content. the tv networks and the cable networks. >> does it give them power to raise prices for consumers? >> yes, what will it mean for you and me? at&t says it will provide more competition. in announcing the deal, it says directv will allow it to provide

customers with new, competitive choices. we'll see what the regulators say. >> okay, david, thanks very much. this morning's other top stories from amy. good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news from florida where a search is under way for a swimmer who may have been caught up in powerful rip currents. lifeguards on daytona beach spotted the swimmer in distress last night but then he vanished in the rough surf before they could get to him. sunday's strong rip currents led to dozens of rescues and remains high today. more breaking news. a possible easing of tensions between russia and ukraine. this morning russia's president ordered all of the troops stationed near ukraine back to their bases. so far nato says it is not seeing any changes on the ground. and three months worth of rain has fallen in just three days across the balkans. sweeping homes like this one from their foundations. the unprecedented flooding has now threatened to swamp serbia's main power plant. dozens have already died and entire towns have been washed away leaving tens of thousands homeless. california's governor is warning the state is bracing for

what could be the worst wildfire season ever. four fires are still burning near san diego. at least 47 homes are destroyed and so far, damage estimates are more than $20 million. and fire fighters at a home near san diego found themselves under fire. you hear that? that's ammunition stored inside this garage firing itself off. bullets were flying. luckily no one seriously injured but one firefighter hit on the nose by a shell casing. near boston a public bus crashed through a guardrail and nearly plunged onto the turnpike below. the bus dangled for hours until crews were able to tow it away. eight people including the driver were injured. and giving a whole new meaning to swimming trunks or at least one swimming trunk. let's take a look. sunbathers on florida's gulf coast over the weekend saw that. an elephant caught on video just wading into the ocean. it was reportedly a guest at a private birthday party. and finally, what a nice

>> reporter: good morning, robin. those remains are in a private room underground, but in the same building as that gift shop and so this morning some of the families tell me they are furious. this morning, the 9/11 memorial museum set to open to the public this friday is at the center of an intense debate. some 9/11 families pointing to the pricey coffee mugs, t-shirts, key chains and stuffed animals sold in the gift shop inside. and they're upset about the museum's $24 entrance fee. why? because the museum also houses some 8,000 unidentified human remains from those terrorist attacks. so as long as that sort of tomb of the unknowns is there, you're not going to walk in. >> no, i'm not going to walk in. >> reporter: jim lost his 29-year-old son, a firefighter, in the 9/11 attacks. it took more than six months to find some of his son's remains, the rest, he believes are unidentified and in that

repository. >> my son's friend will have to pay $24 to go down to pay their respects. i think that's a disgrace. it's the only cemetery in the world where you have to pay a fee to get in. >> reporter: another family telling abc news they are appalled by greed and commercialism. i wouldn't expect such an intrusion at arlington cemetery or at the pentagon memorial or at any cemetery. >> take the remains out of the museum and then i think there will be less opposition to the selling of the trinkets and the hats and shirts. sfw sfwlr. >> reporter: in a statement museum representatives tell abc news news -- "the museum receives no government funding and relies on private fund raising, gracious donations and revenue from ticketing and care phil selected keepsake items for retail." >> my son's helmet was crushed. we to want see it do well. let's never let it happen again. >> reporter: by the way, a lot of these items have been on sale for years here at an official gift shop at the memorial. the difference, the families say, is that now they are so

close to those human remains. robin and george. >> you can understand the families' emotion. thank you. we'll switch gears. what a weekend for california chrome. one race away from becoming the first winner of the triple crown in 36 years after his win in the preakenss. he started using a nasal strip to breathe better but may not be able to use them in the belmont stakes which means he may not be able to run. paula faris has the story. good morning. >> reporter: they're calling california chrome america's horse for a good reason. it's the ultimate underdog story. two everyday guys with a dollar and a dream buy a horse for next to nothing and now they are on the doorstep of history. >> california chrome reaching for the wire. >> reporter: with its win at the preakness over the weekend, california chrome is one gallop closer to horse racing's most elusive and exclusive club, the triple crown. something that has not been achieved since affirmed swept the kentucky derby, preakness and belmont in 1978.

bean stalking me that is at my home. >> her name? >> dr. monica wehby. >> reporter: the call to 911 made in april 2013 by wehby's ex-boyfriend andrew miller. the millionaire timber executive claiming the rising republican star is a stalker showing up at his home uninvited about five times in the last ten days. >> i had a relationship with her. >> okay. >> the relationship has ended and she's very, very upset and angry. she's been coming to my workplace. >> reporter: in that police report wehby admitted going into the house through an unlocked back door, telling an officer, miller would not, quote, answer, return her calls or talk to her at all adding "she just wanted to speak with miller to sort things out." the 911 tape was released days before tuesday's primary. so far wehby has been leading her republican opponent in the polls. in an odd twist, miller now says he supports his ex as a political candidate even voting for her, but while the accusations are definitely a

unfolded. >> reporter: is now charged with attempted murder and being held on $1 million bail. this mug shot of 30-year-old jill hansen, a far cry from the woman depicted online. her tumblr page shows an aspiring surfer and in this youtube video for her wet suit brand, she appears to be headed for success. >> reporter: >> i'm a surfer girl. >> reporter: but in a dangerous case of road rage, police say hansen apparently followed 73-year-old elizabeth conklin to her apartment building and intentionally struck her with her vehicle. >> she saw my car. it was the car she wanted. she followed me. she was going to kill me and get the car. >> reporter: she says hansen would have hit her again if not for the quick thinking of a good samaritan. christopher cory smashed the rear window of hansen's car. >> just saw her in her car getting ready to hit me again. he totally saved my life. >> reporter: hansen fled the scene on foot leaving her

some scary moments for a northern california teen stranded by a fast-moving current. tall trees and windy conditions hampered rescue efforts, but finally a chopper was able to lift him out safely. and a scuba diver off the florida coast had a heart-stopping close encounter with a menacing 12-foot-long shark. yep, that's a great white. he lurked around for two minutes which probably seemed like two hours to that scuba diver. he had a spear gun, was able to frighten the shark. they both got away unharmed. no luck for a golfer at a pro event over the weekend in texas. take a look at this ball. it bounces into the hole, amazing, and then it bounces right back out. not a bad shot, though, when you consider he hit it from over 60 yards away. he wound up with a birdie. and finally, america's official vocabulary just got a little big bigger. we've learned the 150 new words in the miriam webster's dictionary. among them, spoiler alert, hashtag, selfie and unfriend.

claiming in "the new york times" op-ed, "hungry, here's why," that not all calories are the same. and that we are getting hungrier because we're getting fatter. huh? >> if you choose certain foods that are more satiating like protein is the most satiating nutrient, then you will feel fuller throughout the day and you'll be less likely to crave refined carbohydrates and sugary foods, and this could be helpful in terms of weight loss. >> here's how the theory works. diets high in sugar and other simple carbs may prompt the body to store more calories as fat making it hard for your body to access or use them and ultimately re-triggering your hunger. another idea that doctors bring up, the set point theory. >> it basically says that we each have an individual set point that is genetically determined and that set point is the weight at which our body is most comfortable, and it's a weight that really resists change. >> and low fat may not be the answer.

foods marketed as low calorie or diet can actually be loaded with sugar. so what can you eat? the answer may surprise you, or maybe not. joining us now, abc news chief health and medical editor, dr. richard besser, back with us. your take? >> i was really blown away by this. when i was in medical school i was taught a calorie is a calorie, and so if you want to lose weight you just cut back on calories, but we're learning more and more how you get those calories makes a big difference. certain things like sugar affect us in a different way than protein and fats. they're more likely to make us hungry and more likely to go and form fat. >> the other aspect of this as you were talking about when we sat down, the set point. >> that makes sense to me. >> yeah, it is. what they're saying, our genetics define what that set point is, but the more we're exposed to these simple sugars, it can creep up our set point. >> can you bring it down? can you bring down your set point? >> well, it hasn't been tested, but what they hope is that by cutting back on those sugars, you're going to be able to gradually lower that set point

so you're not continually hungry when you cut back on your calories. >> bottom line this for us. because people are waking up this morning going, huh, what are you saying here? >> for some the big surprise will be that low fat diet that the heart association and others have put forward is really not the way to go. that the problem is when you cut out that fat, especially in processed foods, they add in all the sugar so the stuff tastes good. so you have to be careful. you want to cut out sugar, you want to make sure that you're shopping at the periphery of the store and not getting that processed food in. the chips, the crackers, they're loaded with -- >> they make you hungry. >> they make you hungry. give you a quick rush in sugar and plummets and you're hungry and you're trying to maintain that level in terms of set points. so if you shift your focus and think i don't want to be just

how do you get into character to -- >> how do i get into character? i watch everything that patrick has ever done starting with the earliest things i can find on youtube and try to emulate him every morning. it's a big, big, big character change for professor x. you get to see him doing things. >> it's just squinting. >> yeah, yeah, yeah, other people have methods and i just do that and that's it. >> well, i think by the end of this movie you start to see him stop doing that and i'll do it more like patrick -- >> the next movie down the road. >> that's for the next one. you're already thinking of that. how was it like to see your character being played by him? >> it was, first of all, flattering when i heard this was going to be my younger self. i never looked this good. >> oh. >> come on. >> never and so i thought, well maybe this -- people will remember me that i looked like

amazing things happen. >> it's all about being authentic and true to yourself and it really truly is. you said about "glee," "glee" opened doors, but the doors were open to you starting at a very young age. i love reading about your experience working on broadway starting with "les mis" as the young cosette. >> they would measure every weekend and if we were growing it would mean we would soon have to leave the show. the streets were my home from 8 to 23 and that was already a unique growing up experience that i learned so much from but it's as if i've had two different lives, one in new york working on broadway and this life in l.a. and so in the book i really wanted to just show like -- tell about that journey and how i went from one world to another world. i learned so much on broadway. >> yeah, it's very inspirational and you do get a real inside feel for what it's like to experience that. you also share some tips that i want to share with our viewers. you were kind enough to bring
