an outbreak of severe weather. from large hail, tornadoes and c flash flooding. pummeling parts of the country. out here in the rockies, and all the way to pennsylvania. >> here it goes, bro. >> reporter: tornadoes appearing here and around denver, colorado. eight reported touchdowns, including this one at the denver international airport. shutting down the airport for just over an hour. flights were delayed and canceled. passengers ordered to evacuate and seek shelter. six jets damaged from falling hail. hail so heavy, up to five inches in some places. snowplows, rarely seen in may, out in force on major highways. overnight, heavy rains in dayton, ohio, closed interstate highways, where cars were submerged, even floating. >> i've never seen it like this. >> reporter: floodwaters inundating entire neighborhoods, throughout ohio. >> i can't even go home. there's no way out. everywhere you look, the water is high. >> reporter: and in elk county, pennsylvania, water rescue

crews, plucking people from their homes and businesses. and this region isn't in the clear yet. a whole new round of storms and heavy rain will come blasting through later on today. robin? >> clayton, thank you. now, to that raging wildfire in arizona. it's threatening a popular tourist destination, putting thousands on alert for thousands of evacuations. strong winds stoking the flames and more firefighters on the way. abc's ryan owens is on the front lines there in sedona, arizona. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: robin. good morning to you. behind me, quite a site. the world famous, beautiful red rock canyons of sedona. this morning, they are not quite red and perhaps not quite as beautiful, because that white smoke has settled here around this popular tourist destination, just in time for the long holiday weekend. fierce flames move closer to homes. and overnight, more elite hot

shot crews move in. 15 are battling the blaze now. 20 more on the way. gusty winds are so unpredictable, more than 3,000 would have to evacuate at a moment's notice. >> a little crazy. a little scary. >> reporter: this fire has expanded to nearly seven miles. exploding ten-fold in 24 hours. deep inside these canyons. just listen to the crackle in this time-lapse video on youtube. >> think about what you need to get out of your home very quickly. >> reporter: about 500 firefighters are on the front lines this morning. including those hot shot teams that specialize in this unforgiving terrain. firefighters from nearby prescot are here. just last year, 19 members of its hot shot team were killed in arizona's deadliest ever wildfire. there are several helicopters and air tankers leading the aerial assault. but late wednesday, they were grounded because of those howling winds.

>> our livelihood's up there. >> reporter: this couple runs a resort here. they are praying the planes can fly again to save this long holiday weekend. in one of america's most beautiful tourist destinations. just look at that smoke rising above the iconic red rocks of sedona. a lot of the firefighters and equipment that are now battling this blaze, came directly here from the wildfires in san diego. it is just shaping up to be one of those fire seasons. robin? >> unfortunately so, ryan. thanks so much. i was just in he is dsedona las. such a beautiful area. 14 we're going to turn to the breaking news overseas. escalation of violence in ukraine. the government blaming pro-russian they call them terrorists. martha raddatz is in washington with the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is one of the deadliest attacks in weeks. and it happened at a checkpoint manned by ukrainian forces in

that volatile eastern part of the country. journalists saw bodies of the dead and about 30 wounded, scattered across fields near the checkpoint. the witnesses say the troops were attacked by pro-russian insurgents. ukrainian armored vehicles were set on fire. a military helicopter had to swoop in to rescue the wounded in grave condition. and rebel commanders are showing off weapons they seized like trophies. there's also sporadic fighting elsewhere in the east. >> this attack comes in the context of russian troops actually pulling back from the border, correct? >> reporter: u.s. officials say they see no mass withdrawal of russian troops from the border. but the nato secretary-general, says there has been some activity, which may suggest they are preparing to withdraw. and of course, we have the upcoming elections this weekend. and more violence is expected. >> okay. martha raddatz, thanks very much. now, to president obama speaking out for the first time,

and privileged to be with my family. that's i want all the time. all the time i cry for her, for my mom, and my sisters. >> reporter: while clutching her daughter, she describes the nightmare she suffered at the hands of ysidro garcia. her mother's exboyfriend who she said assaulted her, made her change her identity and married her. >> i can do nothing. i had to do what he want. >> reporter: she says garcia brainwashed her in believing her family didn't want her. and threatened to deport her family, making her too afraid to ask for help. >> you have to remember, this is a 15-year-old girl. he's all she's got. that's when the brainwashing starts. >> reporter: but she grew worried about her daughter's safety, and turned to facebook, contacting her sister. and finally, tuesday, she worked up the courage to call police, ending a decade-long nightmare. >> i was really afraid about everything because i was alone. i think i was alone.

but i wasn't never was. my family was with me. >> reporter: now, the neighbors in santa ana say they never suspected anything. they thought garcia was a loving husband. but now, he is due in court, facing kidnapping and a host of other charges. amy? >> john, thanks so much. and new evidence this morning that americans are on the move. the census found two of the three fastest growing cities in the u.s. are in texas, thanks to the energy industry. the other is in utah. in fact, the seven-fastest growing cities are all west of and frightening scene in ft. myers, florida. a car burst into flames after being rear-ended. a police officer quickly helped both victims escape. the driver admits she was playing with the radio before the crash and was not paying attention. and finally, imagine running out for your morning coffee and seeing this in the parking lot. a driver in canada rescued a baby moose that was lost and kept running into traffic. so, he plopped the moose into his car.

rescue center, he remembered why he went out in the first place. he wanted to make that pit stop for coffee. so, where did he go? he went to tim horton's. one website said a baby moose at tim horton's. can the story get more canadian? >> a doughnut. that moose is cute. we're going to turn to a truly bizarre incident in baseball. a fight breaks out in a minor league dugout. ends with one player missing a chunk of his ear, bitten off by his own teammate that has now been suspended. abc's ryanfá smith is here with the details. good morning, ryan. >> good morning, george. >> you have a veteran catcher on the one hand. fighting and biting his teammate in the other. baseball's second-highest level. and the fight, landing the player doing the biting in big trouble. >> are you crying? >> reporter: they say this is true -- >> there's no crying in baseball. >> reporter: apparently, ear-biting is a whole different ball game. monday night, during the seventh inning of a minor league game, between the salt lake bees and the albuquerque isotopes,

catcher miguel olivo and alex guerrero get into it, during a pitching change. over guerrero's failure to make a play. the players argue as they walk to their dugout. and a fight breaks out. that's when, boris says, olivo took a bite out of guerrero's ear. so severe, plastic surgery was required. to reattach it. olivo and his represents have not comments on the incident. dugout fights in baseball are nothing new. in 1977, reggie jackson and his manager, billy martin, went at it. in 2002, barry bonds and jeff kent exchanged blows. but like mike tyson before him, ear-biting, clearly crossing a bizarre line. >> i've been in baseball for near 35 years. i've never seen anything quite like this. this is extreme behavior. >> reporter: and biting has its consequences, like in this incident last year, where luis suarez bit an opponent. that player immediately protested.

that chomp, earning suarez a ten-game suspension. but olivo's bite could cost him a lot more. the dodgers releasing a statement wednesday, saying he's been put on the, quote, suspended list. and, quote, will remain suspended, pending the completion of an investigation. their teams' parent company, where the teammates got into the fight, the dodgers, say they don't condone this type of behavior. and reportedly, the salt lake police are investigating. but as for guerrero, his agent today us, he is major league ready but possibly on the shelf for four to five weeks. now, the dodgers had an injury to one of their infielders the very next day. so, if not for this injury, the agent thinks he could have played in the major leagues right now. >> good to hear they don't condone it. >> reporter: so many snickers over here. >> but fights happen all the time. >> reporter: all the time. >> in the heat of the battle, fights happen all the time. mike tyson taught us all a lesson.

right now, we'll get the latest on the montana homeowner who killedym a teenager prowlin through his garage. on court wednesday, he pled not guilty to charges that he set a trap and deliberately killed the teen. abc's neal karlinsky has the story. >> reporter: this morning, markus kaarma says he's accident in the killing of diren dede. he is accused of killing dede in his garage, after the exchange student went into his garage looking for alcohol. and setting off this camera. kaarma told policefá he had bee robbed before and was fearful. >> he is scared. he is worried about his family and what's going on and what his future entails. >> reporter: but prosecutors say this wasn't an act of self-defense, but of murder by an angry man who set a trap. >> many of the neighbors have contacted our office.

and have expressed serious concerns about neighborhood safety. they are scared of him. >> reporter: in court documents, kaarma is described as acting aggressive towards other drivers on the road. and of telling stylists at a hair salon, he had been waiting up at night for kids to come. prosecutors argued his bail should be raised to $500,000. the judge didn't agree, leaving kaarma free on his current, lesser bail. his attorney denies he was out to get anyone, saying now he's virtuallya'ñ prisoner in his ow house anyway. >> there's been death threats. he's uneasy being in his own house. >> reporter: if kaarma is cleared in the case, his troubles may not be over. outraged german authorities have submitted a letter saying, they are watching closely and could pursue a case of their own. for "good morning america," neal karlinsky, abc news, seattle. we move on, now, to the

massive hollywood lawsuit. rock star greg almond and movie a young woman, killed while filming a movie about almond's life. >> it is. the lawsuit names greg almond, the film's director and others in the protection, as well as csx railroad company in the death of the young woman on the crew. it accuses the director of setting up a scene on an active train track, withoutzv permissi from the railroad, placing sara jones and the rest of the crew in danger. deep in the swampland of georgia is a eventualries old train trestle. itb was here that william hurt and a crew of 20 gathered to film a dream sequence about gregg allman's life. trying to shoot on the bridge?

>> william hurt, playing gregg allmen, sitting in a hospital bed. >> reporter: according to the lawsuit, the movie's crew waited for two freight trains to roar past before they were ordered to set up the bed and the cameras on the tracks. but as the director, randall miller, yelled action -- the dream sequence scene turned into so, the entire crew, they're all on the bridge. and somebody yells, a train is coming. >> a train's coming. and then, everybody starts scrambling. >> reporter: a third train, two stories high, nearly as wide as the trestle itself, was on them in seconds. one of the camera crew, 27-year-old sara jones, was one of several who could not make it to safety. >> all these people are trapped. and ultimately, the train hits the bed. >> it just created shrapnel. shrapnel apparently hit her and caused her to knock her into the

train. >> reporter: she was killed instantly? >> apparently so. >> reporter: other people were also hurt? >> yes. we understand there were seven other people hurt. and a couple other of themxd rather badly. >> reporter: did you speak to the director of "midnight rider"? did he call you? >> randall miller called us that day. >> reporter: what did he say? >> he was nearly hysterical. and he was saying, i'm so, so sorry. >> reporter: do you hold him responsible? >> i believe those who made poor decisions, absolutely, need to be held accountable. >> reporter: sara's parents filed a lawsuit, aiming to do just that, accusing gregg allman, and the producers of "midnight rider" of wrongful death. accusing them of shooting a scene without permission of the railroad. and failing to warn the cast and crew of the danger presented. and actually concealed that danger by leading the cast and crew to believe they were on the railroad tracks with permission. allman is named because his executive producer of the movie

about his life. they say he is responsible for what happens on the set. the movie industry is still reeling from news of sarah jones' death. the crews on tv and movie sets began a campaign, slates for sarah. sarah's parents hope it will promote safety while filming. what do you hope her death will accomplish? >> we want the industry to re-evaluate itself. that's the bottom line. safety for sarah. >> reporter: other crew members on the set that day tell us they felt deeply uneasy about shooting on that train track but were afraid to speak up. and that's what sarah's parents want to change. criminal charges may come in this case, as well. charges for trespassing for negligent homicide. actor william hurt has dropped out of the project. but randall miller wants to continue shooting next month. that's created controversy and backlash. >> her parents, just want to

we're coming up, now, on 7:43, with that frightening moment caught on camera. people in an electrified pool in florida, getting shocked when they come in contact with the railing. a terrifying reminder as we head into the holiday weekend. and of course, summer. abc's matt gutman has the story. >> reporter: it's a harrowing video of an invisible po penalty killer. a florida pool suddenly becoming electrified. watch as this girl touches the rail and immediately goes limp. a man believed to be her father, sees her. when he touches the railing, he is also zapped. finally, he grabs her, yanking her out of the water. look at the top of the screen. an adult, drops and rolls a child out of the pool. look back at the railing, there's another young girl, a 5-year-old, seemingly lifeless

in the water. the surge of electricity, paralyzing her muscles. a man bhooefed to be her grandfather dragging her limp body from the pool. >> i was in the pool, the metal railing. i was swimming close to it and i felt the shock. >> reporter: the two young girls, one of them his sister, spent four days in the hospital. all of them survived. forensic photos seem to show loose grounding wires in the pool pump believe to be the culpr culprit. the same type of shock killed calder sloan, just a few miles away. >> he never stopped doing everything. >> reporter: that was at the family pool, where place say shoddy wiring may also have caused a deadly charge. according to the most recent figures from the consumer product safety commissions, from 2002 to 2011, 13 people died

helicopters and air tankers have been grounded because of strong, erratic winds. more than 3,000 residents are on standby to evacuate if the winds send the flames in their direction.ç and flights are back on schedule at denver's airport, after a reported tornado, one of eight in the area on wednesday. six planes were damaged by large hail, up to five inches of hail fell there. snowplows actually had to clear those roads. and new concerns this morning that the boston bombers may have had help carrying out last year's attack. federal prosecutors revealed the bombs used by the tsaranev brothers were fairly sophisticated with fuses made from christmas lights and a detonator made from model car parts. they say the brothers may have had some help building those bombs. but they have not yet identified any suspects. and a deadly attack this morning at a crowded market in northwest china. more than 30 people were killed when 2 suvs plowed through a crowd and set off explosives. the attack is blamed on muslim separatists. and back in this country,

police are reviewing surveillance video, showing two school buses colliding in long island, in new york. the larger bus had driven through a stop sign. the driver has been suspended, pending an investigation. both drivers and a student were rushed to the hospital. but they are all okay this morning. and mcdonald's is under pressure this morning, facing questions about worker wages at its annual shareholder meeting today. more than 1,000 protesters are demonstrating at the company's headquarters, pushing for higher pay. 139 were arrested wednesday for crossing police lines. and tough times at two of the nation's best-known retailers. sears parent company has reported a $402 million loss. and profits at american eagle are down 86%, forcing the company to close 150 stores. and finally, we all know that irresistible smell wafting out of cinnabon stores in the mall. but guess what? it's no accident.

"the wall street journal" has a uncovered the chain's secret strategy. and the story is going viral. cinnabon places all of its ovens deliberately near the front of the store and only opens stores in enclosed locations, like malls and airports. and the hoods over their ovens are weaker than usual, so the smell isn't sucked out. and they will heat trays of brown sugar and cinnamon, to keep the aroma in the air. they have vents that deliberately push the cinnabon smell out. when i'm at reagan national airport, i can smell the cinnabon. now, i know why. >> it's so hard. and you're eating it and you're like, why am i eating this? because it smells so good. >> i have no problem with everything you just said. and what they're doing. it works. >> it does. your brain chemistry. >> did you have any kind of withdrawal? >> yeah. the cravings. you walk through my neighborhood, as i showed you. and there's all these cookie and cupcake places. >> you notice them more? >> you feel deprived. i felt very angry at katie. >> sorry, dan. i'm so sorry. but you know, it's also hard, i don't know if you went out to dinner with friends. i went. and they had dessert came with the meal. curses. and it came out and looked so delicious. i found if you just say no altogether. i take one bite of something, i end up in the corner with chocolate sauce dripping down my face. >> that's easier. what do you think is going to linger from this? from the challenge? >> for me, it's really, i hope it changes the way i eat. i have been looking at labels much more 8carefully, ever sin i started doing this film. and so, i payfá attention. i shop totallysdifferently, george. i look at,ç you know, how many grams of sugar is in everything. and i'm shocked all the time. i think i'm just going to try to

still reduce the amount of sugar that i'm intaking every day because it just -- i've lost five pounds. i got rid of a little belly fat. it's not as poochy, tmi. i think it's really made me feel better and look better. >> you going to stick with it? >> i think i will stick with it with a few calculated sugar binges along the way, including one tonight. >> once you start, you start -- it makes you crave more and more. you have to do it sparingly. >> you've had a lot of fans keeping up with you. >> something like 26,000 people have done the fed up challenge. they've given me kips like putting vanilla extract in your oatmeal instead of sugar. and blueberries and nuts and chia seeds. and everybody is giving each other hints on how to stay strong. >> and your meditation helped you? >> it did because i could feel the cravings come up and try to let them pass.

those who sacrificed their lives in combat. a new major motion picture is out tomorrow. it focuses on the war in afghanistan, as seen through the eyes of soldiers on the front lines. it was shot by our abc colleagues, father and son journalists, who captured a raw, up close look at the humanity of our armed forces. "follow me," a powerful and haunting song from country megastar, wynonna. ♪ through the shadows of death >> reporter: written for a new film called "the hornet's nest," a raw and emotional look at the war in afghanistan. >> we have landed in the hornet's nest. >> go, go. >> reporter: it was shot and produced by our abc news colleagues mike boettcher, a veteran conflict journalist, and his son, carlos. >> i felt that we needed to more

fully tell the stories of the men and women in uniform there. and the only way to do it, was to be there with them full-time. >> i told him, i wanted to be with you. i want to go with you. i want to do this with you, dad. >> reporter: for two years, beginning in 2009, mike and carlos embedded with u.s. troops. >> snipers firing from the tree line over there. >> we were under heavy fire. and we didn't know if the other one was alive or dead. >> reporter: documenting the unparalleled heroism of the men and women who fight side-by-side, and follow one another into battle. >> americans go out there now. and god bless them. say, thank you for your service. but they don't have a clue what they're thanking them for, really. that's why i wanted to make a film that will show you exactly what it means. so, the next time you say thank you for your service, you'll know what the heck you're thanking them for. >> i asked these wonderful

servicemen to come in. i saw them outside. and it was so perfect, with you, wynonna. not playing at all. here with wynonna, a dear friend, and her husband, cactus. you saw "the hornet's nest." they became much big supporters of the film, they decided to perform a song. you have always gone out and really been there for people who serve our country. >> music is the backdrop for peacetime and war. and i tell my children every day how blessed we are to have freedom. this is about healing and community and fellowship. appreciate you guys and the women. so, you're absolutely right. i stood up and show up. >> you show up. and how this all came about, cact cactus, very interesting story. >> i was in a gym in l.a. she was doing "dancing with the stars." i was working out. i had a motorcycle accident, which happened a year and a half

ago. i was walking around with a walker, not my favorite in l.a. in a gym, everyone's beautiful. and a guy was standing in the corner, the producer of this film. and i came walking by. and he said, are you a vet? i said, i'm a musician. he says, you have to come see this movie. and we talk about wy and i writing a song. >> tell us about "follow me." >> as you know, from experience, when life hands you something, you have to make a choice. and these men made a choice to follow their leader down into the pits of hell. i don't know if i can do that. i don't know about y'all. but these men went where i don't know that i could. it's down in the hornet's nest, where they're surrounded by taliban and to save their brother. and -- brothers. and i just -- >> it was great to see the leader. >> "follow me," it hit me. >> i'll go, if you follow me. >> all right.
