>> good morning, america. >> we're on camera. thank you for that friday edition of "pop news," lara. first up on "the heat index," a new study sending shock waves to those on a gluten-free diet. in a stunning reversal, the doctor who's findings kicked off the gluten-free craze, says now he's got it wrong. abbie boudreau has the story. >> reporter: gluten-free diets, popular with many celebrities, like miley cyrus and lady gaga, who say the gluten-free diet helped them lose weight. it was so huge, that even jimmy kimmel couldn't hold back. >> what's gluten? what is this thing you will not eat? >> it is a part, i believe, of the wheat that -- i really don't know. >> reporter: but the same doctor whose research is credited with sparking the gluten-free debate in 2011, is now reversing his opinions. >> we've just conducted a new study. we found that people who
8:17 am
believed that gluten was causing them gut symptoms, we could find no evidence for it. >> reporter: he says hard-to-digest sugars in wheat, rye and barley are likely to be the real culprits, not gluten. for those with celiac disease, having a gluten-free diet is still a must. but for the millions who don't have celiac, but who feel that going gluten-free would rid them of stomachaches and weight gain. he insists this time, he is positive the problem is seldomly due to gluten. for "good morning america," abbie boudreau, abc news, los angeles. >> wow. joining us now, abc chief health and medical editor, dr. richard besser. and you know these gluten-free diets have been very popular in recent years. >> very popular. i think part of the reason is celebrities talking about it for weight loss. celiac disease is a real thing.
8:18 am
1% of people have that. removing gre ining gluten is life-changing. these are the same doctors that did the study that says you may not have celiac disease but have a problem with gluten. >> if you don't have celiac disease but you believe you're feeling better because of the gluten-free diet, what do you say to those folks? >> there's a major mind/body connection. in this study, they had -- the whole group of people were off gluten. one-third they put on high gluten, low gluten and no gluten, all of them said their symptoms got worse. the belief this is working for you may actually help with your symptoms. and that's real. >> that's what i want to ask you is. is there any harm just getting rid of gluten? >> i mean, gluten is in wheat, in barley and rye. it's everywhere. it's a major life change to get it out of your diet. the one thing i worry about, could you have a problem that is caused by something medically that you're ignoring because you're self-diagnosing? i would get checked out first to see what's going on. and then, realize that this is -- there's a gluten fad out there. some people have a real problem.
8:19 am
but not everybody. >> thanks, rich. great information. >> thank you, doctor. now, moving on. in "the heat index" this morning. some game-changing jeans. celebrity stylist rachel zoe has raised fashion eye bros -- eyebrows, just as white is a fashion that can be worn all year. >> i believe that, too. >> i just said it. let's do it, everybody. but unlike black, white clothes show the dirt, obviously. until now. becky worley tried out the newest fashion must-have. >> reporter: white jeans. stylish. summary. stained. oh, man. but fear not fashionistas. the holy grail of white pants is here. yes. white jeans that promise to resist stains. really? they're from joe's jeans. the play dirty stay spotless line of white jeans, shorts, trousers and skirts, promises to repel liquids.
8:20 am
so to put these pants through their paces, i started with the standard stain creator, coffee. wow. it really just rolled right off my jeans. and what was left. i wipe it with a wet cloth. and the stain completely disappears. now, for one of the worst offenders, wine. looks like it might have soaked in. but a little wet cloth. that's incredible. but the real issue -- you need some frozen yogurt? >> yeah. >> reporter: oh, chocolate. this would normally be a nerve-racking endeavor. but for the sake of science, pour it on me, kids. wow. look at that. it seems like you can just push it away. are these normal pants? >> no. >> reporter: there is a little stain. but most of the frozen yogurt just beaded right off. the chocolate yogurt left more of a mark than wine and coffee. but it would be so much worse if it was just the standard cotton.
8:21 am
the folks who make these jeans say they're most effective with liquids. because solids with fats will dig in deeper and bond with the fibers of the clothing. they add that the jeans aren't impervious to pigment-based stains. a few other issues. the stain resistance only survives 20 washes. and the price -- this pair costs $179. ouch. if that means you don't have to buy a new pair of white jeans every summer, maybe it's worth it. if you can live with the price, these are white jeans you might actually live in. for "good morning america," becky worley, oakland, california. >> i don't know. i love the idea. >> i was impressed. i wasn't a believer that it could actually happen. but proof is in the pudding. she was able to wipe it off. and you could save some money not buying new jeans every year. >> yeah, a lot of money, but if you amortize -- i spill. >> and i spill, too.
8:22 am
we have these all over. it happens. >> thank you, becky. now, let's go to david. you have a special report coming out tonight. >> thank you. an incredible journey five years in the making. for some time now, we've been following children, who have been crippled by fear of their own anxiety. the parents, seemingly hopeless, wondering, will our children ever break free? but they and we never gave up on those children. 15-year-old bridget looks like your typical teenager on the outside. but inside, she is wrestling to break free from unimaginable fear. on this day, her progress is measured in inches. >> what do you think? >> like nine. >> well, come on. look at that. >> reporter: the woman at the other end of the sofa, is about to move from her chair to the couch. >> tell me what's going on? >> she got so close. and she's never been this close before. >> reporter: that woman who has bridget so terrified is her own mother. bridget has been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. her particular obsession, an
8:23 am
irrational fear that her own family is somehow contaminated. long before the worries, bridget was a beautiful little girl. smiling from ear to ear. a standout swimmer in the pool. fish in the water. and bridget is hardly alone in her fight against fear. her fight against anxiety. it's estimated 9 million children in america suffer from it, one in eight. he was just 8 years old when his mother took this video of him. >> i don't remember. get the phone. >> reporter: rocco's obsession revolves around the fear of getting sick. what would happen if when he leaves for school? >> you remember what i said. i don't know what i said. why do you do that? >> reporter: we have followed rocco for five years now, who watched as his parents got him out of the house, on to this carousel. at the time, distracting him. we talked about his little league. >> 17-1-1. >> reporter: 17-1-1? the biggest victory was just
