>> now, this is a live picture from the bay bridge right now. super slow traffic. all of this as an estimated 4 million californians plan to hit the road over this memorial day holiday weekend. the start of the busy summer travel season. aaa says 2% more drivers than last year will hit the road in california. >> drivers are also dealing with a closure that is now shutdown from 6th street to the 101 interchange for the long weekend. it's expected to reopen by 5:00 tuesday morning. last night, crews began working to replace a damaged hinge that holds together two pieces of concrete. they plan closures in the northbound direction over the july 4th and labor day weekends to complete the project. >> those alting to fly got an early start. they got a jump on the crowds to

it's going to be normal as she goes. dropping down to about 61. now tomorrow and sunday just down the road a little bit, carnival, 36th annual carnival san francisco. we'll have early clouds and 63 but by noon clearing and 68 and mid 70s in the afternoon hours to a comfortable 67 by the time its over. now if you're thinking about going over to san ramone it's sunday and monday. it will be 71 at 10:00 but during the afternoon hours bright sunshine and mid 60s. i'll have that and a warmer weekend coming up in your accuweather 7-day forecast. >> a freak accident in san francisco knocked out power to 1200 customers in the engleside district. mist from fog this morning caused the dusty pole on fire near garfield and arch streets.

the outage is also effecting traffic signals at 19th avenue implths breaking news out of massachusetts where a car has crashed into the emergency room at a va hospital. it happened about 90 minutes ago. the boston fire department said one person was removed from the car. it doesn't appear there's any serious structural damage to the building. no word yet on what caused this accident. >> back here, morgan hill police are asking for the public's help to catch a man that tried to rob a woman outside a target store and then robbed a subway restaurant. the suspect is caught on video. matt keller is live with the latest. >> well, the manager of this subway restaurant just arrived here in the last 15 minutes. but investigators already know what this armed robber looks like and they're hoping that someone recognizes him and gives him a call. >> this target in morgan hill isn't like the target stores in

the bigger surrounding cities. here it feels like everyone knows your name. >> it's almost like the sitcom cheers. i don't know if you have ever seen that. probably. you walk in and everybody says norm, you know? >> police want to know this man's name. officers say at about 9:00 last night he pulled up next to a woman in the parking lot. he was driving a black four door sedan. it's possibly a chevy cavalier or dodge neon. he pointed a shotgun at her and demanded her purse. she backed away and kept her purse. no shots were fired. he ended up driving about a half mile away to the subway restaurant, pointed the shotgun at the workers, grabbed cash out of the register and took off. >> we believe he was desperate for any amount of money he could get. it also shows the fact that he, not wearing a mask or not concealing his vehicle, most likely knowing there was surveillance at the businesses made him more of a desperate

act. >> take a look at this. he is believed to be in his 20s with a slim build and mohawk. he has a tattoo of a cross on his left wrist and another on his hand. he was wearing a black punisher t-shirt and green shorts. police are hoping someone will turn him in for this terrifying and unusual string of crimes. >> it's weird. morgan hill you wouldn't expect something like that. >> police say a shotgun is an unusual weapon to use in an armed robbery because it's tough to conceal. they say they're looking at similar crimes in surrounding cities to see if any of those match up with this guy's mo. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> can dahls mark the spot of a deadly shooting in heyward. a 22-year-old man was killed. a 48-year-old man was wounded but expected to survive. it happened and police responded after somebody called in and reported shots fired and a car crash. >> and the search for the gunman

lead police to a nearby house. officers approached the property with weapons drawn but made no arrest. they're asking for anyone with any information to come forward. right now they're trying to figure out what lead to the shooting. >> happening now in oakland, police, firefighters and paramedics are crawling all over a school campus practicing skills they hope they never have to use. amy is is live to tell us what's going on. amy? >> eric, they just finished a drill involving a shooter and patients lying here getting new blood, fake blood applied to them so they can go through the drill. they want to do it because they want to improve on their response time. fortunately they can do that because it's just a practice. here's the scenario. there's a shooter on the loose at oakland high school and there's several victims. law enforcement needs to make the situation safe. emergency crews need to help the gunshot victims. this is all being acted out by

volunteer high school students that actually don't even need to be here. school isn't even in session today. >> it seemed like a really good idea and who doesn't want to be injured and run around school and get fake blood on them. >> emergency responders say with the number of school shootings we have seen happen across the country, it makes sense to practice in case it happens here and they want to try out a new tactic. in the past, paramedics waited until law enforcement said it was okay to go in which caused the victims precious time. >> naturally there's a transition to going in with law enforcement, not at the front but behind them in the warm zone. >> these students really appreciate the emergency teams for doing this drill. >> i think this is a great idea with all the recent school shootings i'm happy to see our district and our school and our city trying to make sure they're prepared if anything should happen. >> the good news is these teens are having fun. they're bloodied and battered

but still taking selfies and laughing but they're very aware they could find themselves in this situation. >> it is scary. i don't want it to happen but i want it to be prepared when it does. >> firefighters say they appreciate the kids so much for doing this. sometimes firefighters will pretend to be victims in a drill. but they say they all know each other. so it's just not the same. they say this feels much more realistic. live in oakland, abc 7 news. >> thank you. thousands of people are expected this weekend for a massive protest against police. local activists have been demonstrating since tuesday after officers shot and killed a man and it was all caught on video. katie is live in the newsroom. >> kristen, protestors believe the shooting wasn't justified. they point to recent history. this is the third fatal officer shooting since late march. the police chief is forwarding the cases to federal authority for review. >> the police chief welcomes any

investigation into alleged misconduct. to that end, he's sending both may shooting reports to the fbi and u.s. justice department for review. it's not enough to quite the unrest in the community fuelled by this amateur video. leading up to the shooting on uz, you see officers with guns drawn following carlos who is waving a pair of gardening sheers. demonstrators were demanding justice. they believed the officers didn't need to use deadly force. >> that's why they get paid for professional training. so they should have knocked him down. >> they should have used batons. he had little pruners that big and they could have used batons. >> the police chief has a different opinion about the shears. >> this is a weapon and a dangerous one and the way it's being manipulated.

new this morning. >> an update to that bay whale found dead. the mammal center said one of his volunteers found it beached this morning. the academy of sciences is trying to find out how the whale died. >> the key vote takes place in the battle of public access to the beach. they're looking at the bill followed by the peninsula lawmaker to force billionaire venture capitalist into a settlement. he owns a massive coastal property that includes the only land access to martin's beach. he closed off the path saying an old spanish land grant gives him the right. senator hill's bill would have the state seize it to regain public access. separately a judge is set to rule on a lawsuit over the same

this is abc 7 news. >> think you're stressed at work, believe it or not many people are actually more stressed at home. researchers at penn state tested saliva samples and found both men and women are more relaxed in the work place. if that's not surprising enough, it also found that men reported being happier at home than on the job while women say they feel better at work. the study found both people with children and those without had the same results. >> i'm going out on a limb but i think it's because men don't do enough house work so they're so relaxed when they're at home. >> we'll talk to jason about it. i don't think our wives say that. >> okay. >> he's not that relaxed. >> we'll talk to him on the

phone. >> all right. hopefully you won't see all work -- yeah, a little fun this weekend as it is a holiday weekend. >> it s. we're going to have pretty nice area in both areas. it's not going to get to terribly warm though. the airmass on top of us is about the same potential as the record setting one awhile ago but the difference is the winds. first let's look at live doppler 7 hd. you can see the clouds clinging to the coast but no drizzle out there now. it's the winds that continue to blow on shore that are going to keep this airmass from reaching it's potential and that's why when it gets hot this weekend it's not going to be overbearing. you can see the clouds dissipating rather rapidly on the satellite. even the high clouds starting to fade a little bit. the clouds will be stick kay long the coast. if you're thinking about walking the golden gate this weekend, sunday would probably be your better day for pictures there. now sfo, our camera shows an opening in the clouds but check the faa site and there's a 1

hour 2 minute flight delay because of the construction on the tarmac there and also the runway. something to think about. 77 in antioch, areas that already have sunshine. san ramon 70s. we have low to mid 60s around the bay. low to mid 50s up north and the clouds are keepg half moon bay and san francisco right now into the mid to upper 50s. you can see how bright the sunshine is over san jose and what we're going to have this weekend a summer spread. temperatures will be much cooler at the coast than in land. in fact, our greatest amount of warming will be inland today or through the weekend and miler highs next week. as far as today, let's go specifically. 78 san jose. heading to the boardwalk, about 68 degrees today. low to mid 70s on the peninsula. love that freeze and the slow sunshine about 66. low 60s along the coast and brisk from time to time. mid 60s downtown with more

sunshine. we'll have 78. 83 in santa rosa and napa. low to upper 80s from san ramon to brentwood. mid 90s in the central valley. still 68 in san diego and 70 in l.a. still getting cold air from the area of low pressure. tonight we'll have temperatures mainly in the low to upper 50s. if you're going to go out and watch the meteor shower from 11 to 1:30, you have to get up about 2,000 feet to see those. 11:00 is when they could start. the warmest day would be sunday. that's also the day with the most amount of sunshine at the coast. near 80s around the bay. it will still be warmer than average. just not quite as warm for memorial day monday and you can see tuesday, wednesday and thursday full of sunshine and dry. temperatures above average away from the coast. >> thanks, mike. >> you bet. >> up nerks, this week's perfect
