>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, may 25th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning. looks like the fog is focus aid long the central coast right now. live doppler 7hd is clear. we are looking at the sutro tower camera where temperatures are on the mild side. 55 in san jose and 46 in half moon bay. that gives you an indication that the fog is not there insulating us along the coast. throughout the day today we will warm up quickly later on in the morning hours. so with the fog-free coast, temperatures will range from the upper 60s around stenson beach and point reyes to around 70 san francisco. around the bay into the lower

80s and inland lower 90s on top. slight cooling for memorial day. we will talk about that in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you. this morning we are learning more about friday night's mass murders near the uc santa barbara campus. there were ten incidents that left six victims dead, at least 13 injured b the rampage the killer posted videos on youtube. >> "tomorrow is the day of retribution. the day in which i will have my revenge." >> authorities believe elliot rodger took his own life after stabbing and shooting his victims. abc7 news reporter sergio has the latest from ala vista. >> at sunset on the campus of uc santa barbara, hundreds of

students hold candles in silence nevertheless columnly paying respects to the victims of a mass shooting. >> i was shocked about this. i don't know what to say. >> it is so surreal. we hear about it happening to other schools and i never would have thought it would happen to our school. it definitely is very hurting. >> this crowd includes students from uc santa barbara where many of the victims went to school and can't barbara city college where the accused shooter was enrolled. investigators reveal new details about the rampage. it spread across ten different crime scenes, starting at his own apartment. >> it appears as though suspect rodger murdered three victims within his residence. >> investigators say rodger went on to a sorority house armed with three handguns. he was not let in so he started shooting people in the street. two young people were killed, a third injured and remains hospitalized. at the deli mart a memorial.

this is where 20-year-old martinez were killed and where the first 911 calls for help were made. deputies engaged him within minutes. after exchange with deputy, it was over. he was found dead. it was not clear if he took his own life or if he was mortally wound by deputies. victims were stunned. >> i was here. i was here when the shots started going off. >> it's clear people here are still trying to grasp exactly what happened as the shooter went on a rampage. in ala vista, abc7 news. >> the surveillance was captured on surveillance video at the deli mart, one of the ten crime scenes. you can see people running for cover when the gunman began firing. several people were shot here, one fatally. and we are hearing how the shooting rampage unfolded from the voices of the first responders on the scene.

>> we have three down. we have three -- >> up date. witness who is a dark colored bmw, white occupant, male wearing a white shirt firing as he went by. >> thank you. we have another gunshot victim. shot fired! shot fired! >> firefighters and paramedics were unable to reach some of the victims until law enforcement secured the area. veronica wiese died, katheryn cooper, 22, both were sorority sisters. and 20-year-old christopher michael martinez, a second-year student the santa barbara. his father, richard, talked with christopher just about 45 minutes before he died. >> you don't think it will happen to your child until it

does. chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and -- they talk about gun rights. what about chris' right to live? when will this insanity stop? >> six victims are still hospitalized." two remain in serious condition. one of those injured in the santa barbara rampage is a 19-year-old university of pacific student who lives in danville. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley spoke to his family. >> the 19-year-old water polo star was happy to be hanging out with friends for the start of customer vacation. his dad said they web out to celebrate and get something to eat friday evening. nick told cnn there was a guy driving a bmw. i was on a long board and he aimed his car at our group of friends and gunned us into it. i have two broken legs and need surgery. police said i flew roughly

50 feet into a busy intersection. this is all so crazy. his dad got the dreaded phone call saturday from his friend. >> the left leg was shattered like a firecracker. his right leg -- or right ankle, as we understand it right now, is broken. he has fractures to his face. it will be a long recovery for him. but he is alive. six people aren't. >> nick graduated from san ramon high school lift year and swims on the water polo team for the university of the pacific? stockton. his family has been glued to the tv coverage of the rampage, trying to piece things together. >> he's alive. i mean, the real thoughts have to go out to the other families who were not as fortunate. >> they hope nick can come home in the next day or two. leslie brinkley, abc7 news. now to the killer,

22-year-old elliot rodger. his family attorney said he was diagnosed with highly functional as berger syndrome, which is a form of autism, often associated with people who have problems with social situations. we are now getting a glimpse of his life through youtube videos and are 141-page manifesto. >> the girls are not sexually attracted to me. i have a major problem with that. major problem. that's a problem that i intend to rectify. >> elliot talks about his troubles in a series of youtube videos titled why life is so unfair. santa barbara city college student lived in ala vista. the county sheriff's office said they were familiar with him. he claimed he was the victim of an assault but the investigation revealed he may have been the

aggressor. in january of this year he accused a roommate of stealing three candles and made a citizens arrest. then less than a month ago family members asked them to check on him after his parents discovered his youtube videos. but when sheriffs went to his apartment they determined he didn't meet the criteria for a mental health hold. >> the deputies found him to be polite and courteous. he down played the concerns for his welfare and the deputies cleared the call. >> rogers told deputies he was having difficulties with his social life and probably wouldn't be returning to school in the next year n a rambling online manifesto entitled my twisted life, rodger described his fear, saying the police would have searched my room, found all of my guns and weapons arks long with my writings about what i plan to do with them. i would have been thrown in jail, denied of the chance to exact revenge on my enemies. abc7 news. coming up at are 5:30 we

will have more on the shooting rampage and the response from uc precedent janet napolitano. a pilot made a grasslanding just after 7:30 last night. fire crews rushed to the scene as a precaution. no one was injured. a group of boaters had to abandon ship after it hit a whale. the five people on board told the san mateo county sheriff's office they were boating five to ten miles offshore when they felt the vessel hit a whale. the motor stopped working and they drifted into the rocks at the beach. now a salvage team is work to go get the boat off the rocks. >> but the fear is it being in the surf zone, it being stuck in the ground up against the rocks with surf like it is that the boat will come apart and potentially spill what fuel it has left. so we are making every effort to get the boat off the beach all

hospitals and clinics, as a part of trying to improve their treatment after reports of falsified reports and delays in treatment. v. a. facilities are enhancing capacities at their clinics so vets can get care much sooner. the va is facing allegations veterans have died waiting for treatments at va centers and employees have falsified records to core up the situation. people raised money last awareness about posttraumatic stress and suicide this weekend. they organized a candlelight veggity at the pittsburgh bay point bart station. during the vigil people blew out their candles when they thought about how many lives are lost when a veteran commits suicide. he made it his mission to raise awareness about ptsd. >> at least 8,000 a year because

they aren't reporting the veteran that drinks a little too much, drives his car into a wall or over the edge. >> the group wants to end the stigma associated with ptsd, hoping people will not refer to it as a disorder. on this memorial day weekend a new study ranks california as the worst state in the country for military retirees. california ranks at the low end of the list in several metrics. economic environment, healthcare services and overall quality of life. researchers say california's high housing costs and having nearly the highest percentage of homeless vets appears to have played a role in pushing the state to the bottom. on this memorial day weekend general martin dempsey, the joint chiefs of staffs, talks to martha raditz in an exclusive

well as san jose. another vantage point for you from our roof camera. we see a few cirrus clouds there. 51 santa rosa, 59 concord. upper elevation winds are gusty and at the coasted to winds will gust over 25 miles an hour throughout the afternoon. here's a look from our exploratorium camera. our forecast highlights, the cloudy skies at the coast, mainly south of san francisco. warmest day will be today with temperatures above average and them slightly cooler tomorrow as the sea breeze kicks up and the fog returns but we will still likely see temperatures around 90 inland tomorrow. but here's a look right now at our radar and satellite composite and high pressure is building into the west coast. notice the jet stream, the storm track well to the north. that will allow for that marine layer to be compressed. the sea breeze still intact but it will even be warmer at the coast. forecasting the highs in the

upper 60s today at some of the beaches in the north bay. low pressure will drop out of the gulf of alaska and that will cool us off. take a look at had this hurricane, amanda. increasing to category 4 with wind gusts of 165 miles an hour. winds now 140 miles an hour. it will strengthen a little more but then it will weaken quickly into tomorrow and then it turns into what we call a remnant low and no threat to the coast of mexico. but interesting. first hurricane of the pacific. 83 in san jose, 90 in gilroy. a few numbers in the outlying areas will be approaching 90 degrees. 80 mountain view. the 60s in the sunset. dilly city. 71 downtown. in the north bay highs mainly in the mid-and upper 80s. but calistoga, cloverdale 91. napa warmer than yesterday at 90 and today in berkeley how about 77 for you as well as

flagstaff since the fire was sparked last tuesday. the acreage will likely double because firefighters have decided to let the fire burn through rugged unreachable terrain. the fire is only 5% contained. firefighters are going door to door in the oakland hills teaching people about this year's fire denger and making sure their homes are ready for the fire station. they need to have 30 feet of defensive space around their property. it is dry and windy, as lisa has been telling us and that has firefighters on edge as they try to talk with 26,000 homeowners in the area. neighbors have not gore gotten the 1991 oakland firestorm that destroyed 3,000 homes and killed 25 people. here we are 24 years later and, you know, we could have another event like that. you have condition like this. one careless move and we have a

gunman, 22-year-old elliot roger, planned that killing spree for at least a year. abc news reporter has the latest from i will russian >> this was a chaotic, rapidly unfolding and convoluted incident that involved multiple crime scenes. >> police say it all began at the apartment of suspect elliot roger, a 22-year-old student at santa barbara city college, stabbing three people to death in his home. investigators say roger then got into his black bmw, methodically gunning down pedestrian. one person came face-to-face with him outside the local deli. >> he almost kind of had a smirk like he was excited about it or happy about it. pretty scary. >> moments later police say he killed chris michael martinez.

three people were shot and killed at a myrtle beach hotel. officers arrived at the bermuda sandoval hotel last night finding four victims. three were pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken the hospital, condition unknown. witnesses say the shooting started with a fight in the streets. divers had to recover the body of a woman who died after her car crashed into a canal. it happened on highway 4 in san joaquin county yesterday morning. the chp said someone called 911 to report the crash about 6:00 yesterday morning. investigators say they don't know why the driver lost control and skidded off the road. and investigators want to find out more about a man's body found floating near san jose's marina at the southern end of san francisco bay. the san jose fire department provided these pictures of the scene. a kayaker discovered the body around 10:15 yesterday morning.

it is unknown exactly how that man died. school lunch programs are under fire. their effort to make kids eat healthier is getting a failing grade. but that is not stopping some from continuing the fight against obesity and diabetes. abc7 news reporter nick smith checked out one of those programs in san pablo and has more. >> do you want some, honey? no? >> fruits and vegies can still be a tough sell to kids and this group of first to fourth graders have heard it all. >> they eat too much junk. >> they played host to the west contra costa unified school district health and fitness festival. event is designed at getting families to adopt a healthier life style and to introduce kids to better choices while they are young. they think they can curve the trend of obesity and childhood

diabetes. >> vegetables help you bus they make you healthy and strong. >> most know it is good for them but that doesn't mean they want it. some let the fruit and vegies sit on their plates without touching them, most winding up in the trash. the lawmakers say even to get kids to eat anything but pizza has failed. new school lunch standards have been phased in that set fat and sodium limits. >> it just takes time. >> when they go home they can teach their parents. >> sounds simple enough burks healthier programs like this are expensive to run. >> i mean, we are very limited when it comes to the child nutrition program. we do when we can with the reimbursement we have. >> who can tell me what the difference is between a fruit and vegetables. >> local venders helped to make up the difference that school budgets don't. she brings school budgets of every shape, size and location

lehman melendez talked to her about overcoming challenges. >> when she was about to enter fourth grade her parents were told their daughter measured very low on aiq test. peters, who this year is u.c. berkeley's top student, only found out about it a few years ago. >> my parents were sort of laughing to themselves. i asked what's so funny and they said it's funny is someone who was told they would never read at the college level is now about to be admitted to the world's best public university her parents fought on, push to go enroll her in advanced classes. peters have pursued everything in life with the same kind of intensity. >> the classes i think i work hardest in or ones i find myself intellectually engaged and courses that normally wouldn't come easy to me. >> she earned a 3.98 grade point average but the university medal is also given to students whose ideas benefit others.

>> the latino communities are disproportionately impacted. >> most recently she worked in salinas to bring awareness to the nitrate contamination problem in the drinking water supply that affects so many families there. she made it her project to work on water and sanitation project in several countries. she also speaks openly with another issue, her bout with depression. >> something you learn how to deal with and make your own and it's not easy, but i think to be able to overcome it has made me stronger. >> she will soon leave berkeley to continue her studies at the university of man chester and then oxford in the u. k. in berkeley, abc7 news. >> i love that story, don't listen to other people's expectations. >> yeah. here's a beautiful shot outside. 56 in livermore, and numbers there will be well into the

why everything is better. well, the weather is certainly better today than it will be tomorrow, if you like warm temperatures. >> that's right. we've been featuring this warmup, one-day warm up, although it will still be warm in the inland valley. how quickly the coolness returns. but today you will still are the sea breeze, just the look of the marine layer for most of you. it is situated along the central coast here's a look at live doppler hd. checking out the clear conditions. sutro tower showing a few high clouds and temperatures ranging from the mid-40s half moon bay to the mid-50s. san francisco 53. a west wind. 56 in oakland. here's mt. tam. nice and clear. upper elevation winds a little bit breezy. 50 in novato, 51 santa rosa and napa with 56 in livermore and a look from the exploratorium

camera where we have another clear shot for you. the clouds are south from monterey and salinas. we will look for the clear conditions inland. a quick warmup. temperatures today will be above average and slightly cooler tomorrow at the coast and around the bay with the return to some low clouds and fog. so from our radar and satellite vantage point you can see the main feature here is an area of high pressure. as it builds into the eastern pacific, it pushes the storm track to the north and really wipes out the marine layer. once again the winds will be gusty later on today. over 25 miles an hour at the coast out of the northwest. although temperatures will be warmer, we will climb into the mid-and upper 60s. but it will be capped in the upper 60s with the sea breeze. low pressure visits us and temperatures begin their low decline beginning tomorrow. look at the numbers, though, away from the bay. wow, 99 in sacramento. 96 in chico with near 100 as well in fresno. 92 yosemite.
