live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> grief and disbelief are setting in across the uc santa barbara campus after a gunman went on a rampage with a growing tribute of flowers at the sorority house that was targeted. the leaves of several bay area families were forever changed. good morning, i am eric thomas. two grieving families are ready to leave for santa barbara after their sons were killed in a deadly attack. three young men in total from the south bay all students were founded inside an apartment in

isla vista before the shooting that would take three more lives. the coverage on the killer and his motive going with matt keller at the san jose high school a victim attended. >> three bay area high schools are mourning the loss of recent graduates including here in south san jose, the first victims in the mass murder in isla vista over the weekend. >> what happens in a home when a son, brother, and trend is killed to a senseless mass murder? for the family of 19-year-old george chen, there are no words. they sent out friend to speak with us. >> i am very sad. they feel so bad you are waiting outside and they want to tell me you don't is to spend the time here because...they will taught say anything. too much sadness. >> neighbors describe george as kind always willing to help and served as a scamp counselor and graduated from leland high

school. his life and the lives of two friends, james honk and david want were taken away. the roommate, elliot rodger stabbed them to death before going on a shooting rampage. a tense living arrangement with plans to move out at end of semester. they never got the chance. 20-year-old david wang loved computers and video games and basketball. >> a good kid. he was warm-hearted. he always helped others. >> 20-year-old james hong graduated from lynbrook in high school and james knew everyone and will be deeply missed. >> he talked to anyone. he was comfortable with would he was and he had a great charisma. >> the chen family left for santa barbara.

wang's family will head there today. >> the three other victims are from central and southern california. katherine cooper was 22 about to graduate with an art history try degree. her sorority student, veronica weiss was from west lake english and christopher martinez worked at the the iv deli. and ago from danville was in isla vista finishing a former high school classmate and he was hit by the rodger car. both legs were broken. he had surgery over the weekend and is trying to get better as fast h fast as he can. his sister said there is an outpouring of support at the family home and on social media we are getting more detail about

the shooter and the parents' desperate attempt to reach him and prevent the tragedy. >> from the outside, the gunman lived a nice life but he was driven to kill by loneliness. his parents knew something was terribly wrong. before the attack they received their son's chilling manifesto, the youtube posting confirmed their worst fear. >> forced me to suffer all my life and i will make you suffer. >> his parented jumped in the car to rush to santa barbara but were too late. >> the next target was the sorority house. >> i am going to enter the hottest sorority house of ucsb. two female students were shot and killed. >> next, a deli where panicked

studented dodged the bullets. another student died, chris michaels martinez. he was so much part of our lives that it is hard to ma'am how things will be like now that he is gone. >> the senseless violence continues circumstances killed and 13 injured. it end when he shot and killed himself. >> there was really, really upset about why the world was bad to him. >> the rodger family contacted the police concerned about his disturbing online rants but police investigates and found nothing suspicious. >> they were for a check to make sure he wasn't a danger to himself. >> if they demanded to search my room, that would have ended everything. >> the college community now has a long road to recovery. a memorial is set up for chris michaels martinez with flowers placed in the bullet holed that ripped through the wall behind

me. >> we are learning of an unusual gesture, today, from one victim's family to the rodger's family. can you tell us more? >> that is right. chris michael martinez father expressed sympathy for all of the victim families including that of the gunman. he said he would like to meet with the father his son's killer so they can work to prevent future tragedies like this from occurring. they have now both lost their sons and their lives should mean something. >> speaking of richard martin news he is calling if stronger gun control laws after the death his son and he talked to christopher less than an hour before he was shot and killed at the deli. his dad shared the photo of his son. he is blasting politicians in a very emotional outburst over what he calls their lack of response to ongoing gun violence. >> my kid died because nobody responded to what occurred in sandy hook elementary school. those parents lost little kids.

it is bad enough i lost my 20-year-old but i had 20 years of my son. >> martinez lashed out against the national rifle association at a saturday news conference and says that he is speaking out because if there are only stories in the media about the shooter and not the victims, that sends the wrong message. >> classes are canceled tomorrow at uc santa barbara for a day of mourning and reflection and a memorial service will be held tomorrow at four of the schools at the stadium to on those killed. students are also planning a memorial wall at the student center in the heart of isla vista and counselors are working extended hours. the chancellor says counselors from other schools like berkeley arin'ing to help. our reporter is live in isla vista covering the story for us and joining us for the live reports tonight at 5:00, 6:00,

at presidio we have temperatures in the low-to-mid 60's. the winds will come in and bring a change in the forecast. if you are headed out on the boat today, we will have the winds that could be nasty this afternoon. >> talk to you later, mike. this memorial day president obama is paying tribute to our men and women in uniform and pledging the nation will care for its military veterans. the president lid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown in arlington national cemetery. >> we have been reminded we must do more to keep faith with our veterans and families and ensure they get the care and benefits and opportunities they have earned and they deserve. these americans have done their duty. it has we ask nothing more we do our part. >> the president is back in the united states after making an unannounced visit to afghanistan surprising 3,000 troops at

bagram and offered solemn remembrances for those lost comrades and talked about the coming transition saying for many of you, this will be your last tour in afghanistan. as we mentioned there are ceremonies an the bay area this morning in honor of america's war dead this memorial day including an event at the presidio dating back 1 1/2 centuries. amy hollyfield is at the presidio. amy to. >> the ceremony got started and the band played "the national anthem." it is a beautiful day. we doubt that have the usual fog we have not morning at this time of year. look at the turnout: a lot of people here and all seats are taken and people are standing in the cemetery to watch the ceremony. this cemetery has more than 35,000 graves and each grave has been decorated with aing in. it is usually boy scouts would spend the week placing the flags at the tombstones but this year the girl scouts joined in and helped. this ceremony is one of the

largest in the nation. they expect about 2,500 people today. when youngsters show up on this day off from school the older generations notices. >> it makes me feel good when i see younger people bringing their children here because they will remember as we get older we tend to for get or the future generations forgets but we are brought to seat sacrifices it would make a difference i think. >> they started with a grand march and they are careful not to call it a parade to make sure they keep the mood somber. there is a special emphasis on remembering the vietnam veterans, their commemorting the 50th anniversary of the escalation of the war and dedicating the ceremony to vietnam easterns. many of the soldiers were deployed from here in the presidio. after the program they offer tours, 30-minute tours, of the national cemetery.

pavilion at a red light on the road before 8:00 last night after leaving a stone soul concert. a vehicle pulled up alongside and a man jumped out and police say he shot both the female driver and her male passenger with a handgun. they managed to drive to the medical center for treatment. no word on their condition. the suspect is described at 6' tall with a black mass and blue jeans. hunter pence is asking fans to be looking out for his missing scooter this is how it looks, and pence said and i quote, "someone dole my scooter. it is the same custom scooter used for the ballpark." he did not say where it was taken from. hopefully it will be found before long. fan support is pouring in and someone tweeted "call the batkid." >> lottery plus players you can buy hunter pence a new scooter

of us were in the 50's. live doppler 7 hd showing i have dialed up the wind to show you we have 14 miles per hour at half moon bay and 18 at sfo and 13 at santa rosa and everyone else is pretty light right now. the key, right now, is if you are taking your boat out, watch out because there is a small craft advisory with winds kicking up. pretty the sam thing along the coast and around the bay it will hang around until 2:00 tomorrow morning and along the coast, until at least 8:00 on wednesday morning. we will look, now, at our wind forecast and you can notice from the morning physical -- until now we have not changed. during the afternoon and evening, we have the cold front drawing near and it is pushing the winds more inland so it will be breezy as we head toward the evening hours. now, a look at what the winds are doing to the cud cover, it pushed right up against the coast and starting to peel it back so we will have almost as

much sunshine as yesterday at the coast but temperatures are cool, again, at 59 at half moon bay and 64 in san francisco, and mid-to-upper 60's along the east bay shore and low-to-mid 70's on the peninsula to the south bay and you can see the 70's and 80's in the north bay and the east bay valley. this is how it looked in san jose, plenty of sunshine this morning at the sham tank and breezy and cooler, but, sunny tomorrow. and we will have more weekend cooling and some clouds, then. interesting is the cold front is so dry when it comes through it will actually wipe out the many layer and it will be sunny and warm and the cold front starts to slide down tonight and it is so dry we will still have sunshine along the coast the next couple of days but the temperatures will drop. we have low-to-mid 80's in the south bay and 90's around los gatos and morgan hill and headed to santa cruz, almost 80 at the boardwalk with mid-70's to low 80's from millbrae to los altos and the coast, mid-60's to

nearly 70 if downtown and south san francisco and up north, bodega bay, upper 60's and we will have low-to-upper 80's in the east bay valley. in castro valley, 80 and through the dublin grade, you run into the mid-80's and low 90's around antioch and brentwood. good news, we will cool tonight and temperatures are back into the 50's. we will look at the seven-day forecast and four to eight degrees cooler tomorrow and total sunshine again and same on wednesday, we could tick up one-or-two degree on tuesday and mother nature is teasing us before she drops another cold front through on friday and saturday and sunday are going to be below average but a lot of warm sunshine for the outdoor activities and all that is going on this memorial day. eric? >> thanks, mike. still to come, money may not grow on trees but you could say it is up for grabs in san
