good tuesday morning. i'm ryan smith, in for john muller. >> and i'm diana perez. it is a day of mourning on the university of california campus at santa barbara. one of the shooting victims, veronica weiss, was remembered last night at the high school where she played water polo just last year. >> classes were canceled at ucsb so the students could attend a memorial service for all of the victims. and abc's tahman bradley is tracking the latest developments. >> reporter: as campuses across california pay tribute to the victims, this morning, we're learning chilling, new details about elliot rodger's elaborate plot to kill, laid out in a 137-page manifesto and online videos. >> girls are not sexually attracted to me. that's a problem that i intend to rectify. >> reporter: 9:17 p.m. friday. rodger's mothers phone rings. a family friend says it was the shooter's therapist, asking if she read the manifesto, called "my twisted world."

alarmed, she checks her son's youtube channel. rodger's mother calls her ex-husband, hollywood director peter rodger, they race to santa barbara, alerting police. but it's too late. >> shots fired. >> reporter: ten minutes of terror. 12 different crime scenes. 13 wounded. three shot dead. and at rodger's apartment, his two roommates and one of their friends found stabbed to death. weeks before the violence spree, rodger's parents contacted police, who conducted a simple welfare check. deputies say they found no reason to take action. a painful reality of the families of the victims. >> nobody needs to own three semiautomatic handguns. it doesn't make sense. >> reporter: among the dead, 19-year-old veronika weiss, a water polo player, gunned down outside alpha phi sorority house. >> i'm glad she got to fulfill what she wanted to do. that's the one light of the situation. >> reporter: classes at u.c. santa barbara are canceled today

for a day of reflection and mourning. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> tahman, thank you. clearly it's going to be another emotional day in isla vista. >> several family members of the victims are there to see firsthand and share their grief. among them, the parents of 19-year-old george chen, described as a gentle soul. >> we would die 100 times, 1,000 times. but we don't want our kids to get hurt. it shouldn't happen to any family. should be the last one in the united states. >> a sentiment echoed by so many others since friday. and stay with abc news for the very latest on the deadly rampage. we have live team coverage coming up on "good morning america." and breaking overnight, severe weather causing damage from texas to north dakota. >> and that's where a tornado struck an oil field camp, injuring nine people, one of them critically.

the national weather service says the twister hit the camp of oil field workers about five miles south of watford city. 15 trailers were damaged. north dakota's oil boom is outpacing available housing, forcing thousands of workers into makeshift camps or trailer parks. and farther south, at least one funnel cloud appeared on the back end of the severe storm system pummeling texas. much of the state remains covered under tornado watches and flash flood warnings. and in some parts of houston, the storms dumped nearly half a foot of rain. >> and today, the wide band of severe storms is stretching from the texas gulf coast, to the great lakes, continues to march across the midwest. but it will be clear from the back end of that system, all the way to the west coast. >> across the nation, temperatures will mostly be in the 80s, except for new england and the pacific northwest. today's hot spot, phoenix at 108 degrees. to colorado now. they'll be searching again today for three men missing after a huge mudslide. the search has been slowed because only the lower third of the three-mile-long slide is stable. it's believed to be several hundred feet deep and about a half a mile wide. bill clark is the cousin of one

of the missing men. >> how can anybody ever expect or see anything like this coming or happening? they were just up there checking the water, afraid of losing a county road. >> family members are holding out hope that the missing men are safe in an area that doesn't have cell phone service. new this morning, malaysia's government has just released the satellite data used to search for the missing airliner. analysts are now reviewing the data, in hopes of finding new clues about what happened to the malaysian airlines plane. it disappeared last march, flying from kuala lumpur to beijing, with 239 people onboard. today's "wall street journal" says australian investigators believe the jet likely ran out of fuel before going down in the indian ocean. also developing this morning, an incredible claim from nigeria and more frustration in the search for the kidnapped schoolgirls. the head of the country's military says nearly 300 girls have been located. but it's simply too risky to rescue them. he refused to tell supporters where exactly the kidnapped girls were located. and the pentagon says it cannot confirm that claim. and pope francis has

announced he will meet with a group of sex abuse victims next month at the vatican. he is also declaring, quote, zero tolerance for any member of the clergy who would violate a child. it would be the first time the pope has sat down with victims of sex abuse. but the head of a group representing abuse survivors here in the u.s., says the pope's words are meaningless and just public relations. boston cardinal sean o'malley is helping to plan next month's meeting. breaking overnight, a fast-moving wildfire in mariposa county, california, has triggered mandatory evacuations. some 100 homes are threatened. warm temperatures and dry conditions fueled that fire, which grew more than 25-times in size. 20 acres to 500 acres. that, just over the weekend. currently, it's 0% contained and highly volatile. and another wildfire is growing in size in a remote part of alaska. the wind-whipped funny river fire, 60 miles south of anchorage, covers some

250-square miles and is only about 30% contained. authorities there ordered the evacuation of 1,000 homes. no injuries or and structural damage have been reported yet. and firefighters in arizona are reporting progress in battling that wildfire north of sedona. the 25-square-mile slide fire is now about 35% contained. no injuries have been reported. and again, no structural damage there, either, possibly due to the strong showing by firefighters. 1,200 of them on that scene. as he marked memorial day, president obama said the u.s. has reached a pivotal moment in afghanistan. mr. obama laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns yesterday at arlington national cemetery. and he told the audience that the nation's long war in afghanistan will be over by the end of the year. he also touched on the controversy over mistreatment and misconduct at v.a. hospitals around the country. >> as we've been reminded in recent days, we must do more to keep faith with our veterans and their families and make sure they get the care and the

drugmaker astrazeneca, at least for now. last week, astrazeneca's board rejected pfizer's $119 billion buyout proposal. the nation's biggest drugmaker promised it will not go hostile, by taking its offer to astrazeneca shareholders. the disgraced owner of the l.a. clippers, donald sterling, has until the end of today to formally respond to the nba's charges against him. all of the charges stem from sterling's racist comments. a week from today, the nba's hearing into the sterling case comes up. he's already agreed to surrender his share of the team to his wife, shelly. and she's now working to resolve the dispute with the league amicably. and if you didn't notice over the weekend, we'll tell you. get ready to pay higher prices for cheeseburgers. experts say the key ingredients cost about 10% more right now than last year. beef prices up 14%. cheese and bacon, also up, but not as much. that perfect storm, the drought out west, disease and strong demand. there is no hostility at the box office this weekend for marvel's latest blockbuster.

the summer-like temperatures this weekend weren't enough in some places to wipe out the final reminders of this year's extreme winter. americans celebrating memorial day along the shores of michigan's upper peninsula, weren't all that anxious to jump into the water because, as you can see, still floating out there in lake superior, huge chunks of ice. >> no. not so interested. >> not getting in just yet. now, for a look at your morning road conditions. rain and showers covering nearly half of the eastern part of the nation. with more flooding conditions in the south. wet roads in the pacific northwest and the northern plains. >> and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in houston, dallas, new york, philly, washington, chicago and detroit. all right. back to the news now. one witness described it as a scene of chaos. two people were shot in three, separate incidents in florida's clearwater beach. >> one of those shootings happened outside the hyatt regency hotel. five people are in custody. police say last night's shootings arose from fights and

do not appear to be random. police did cut off access to the beach and advised people to stay indoors. a bizarre accident in oregon. a 19-year-old man caused a three-car crash when he fainted while holding his breath as he drove through a tunnel northwest of portland. people are not sure why daniel calhoun was holding his breath. but some people hold their breath in tunnels as a game or superstition. an important medical alert this morning. pediatricians are recommending expectant moms take a supplement containing iodide. iodide is needed to make the thyroid hormones that ensure healthy brain development, before and after birth. experts recommend pregnant and breast-feeding women get at least 290 micrograms of iodide per day. particularly rich in iodide are sardines, herring and salmon. and thousands of dead fish are turning up in texas along galveston bay. making a stinky surprise for

tourists. low oxygen levels in the water may be to blame. and more bad news for residents. don't expect the stench to disappear soon. there's no plans to clean up those fish. ooh. and on the coast of san diego, one single, huge smelly dead fish. that one right there. a sea mammal. this dead whale washed up ashore for the second time less than a mile north of the mexican border. this 45-ton, 57-foot-long whale is the same whale that crews dragged out to sea last week. apparently they didn't drag it far enough. now, marine experts are thinking about burying it in the sand. >> that seems to make a little more sense. video of a wild motorcycle crash in pennsylvania. and it's getting a whole lot of attention online. a rider is following two others around a track at high speed. the two up front collide. and then, the bike kicks up in the air, there it is, striking the guy making the video. he says he is fine, but he admits he walked away with just

a few bumps and bruises. the guy said he never expected to get hit in the face with a motorcycle. not a whole lot of people do. on a much calmer level, l.a. dodgers pitcher yunjin ryu took a perfect game into the eighth inning against the reds yesterday. his bid for perfection ended when one of the reds doubled. cincinnati scored three runs in that inning. l.a. held on to win it, 4-3. the previous day, l.a.'s josh beckett threw the season's first no-hitter. >> the game so close. two, big performances. and the u.s. men's national soccer team plays the first of three practice matches tonight, ahead of next month's world cup. and for last night's playoff action, here's our friends at espn. >> good morning, america. time to wake up. he's kenny, i'm neil. this is the "sportscenter" set in bristol. we have to talk about sports. >> they're going to wipe this thing out. we're going to have a fancy, new set. you just hang on for that. right now, we have this. lebron james and the heat. up 2-1 games against the pacers. lebron, he traveled. but it doesn't matter. doesn't matter. this guy's good. scored a whole bunch of points.

extension, southbound, is open for business. it will reshut down fourth of july. southbound 280 is open. in dublin/pleasanton area we have a big rig and car that mixed it up. the car is in the ditch. there is slow traffic already. southbound 680 south of 580. otherwise the road work in the eastbound direction of 84 before the tunnel a couple of lanes until 5:00 this morning and san mateo bridge is looking good, the tail lights headed to foster city and everyone is moving fine. >> back to 280 for a look at the work that was done. we go to amy hollyfield long the freeway where traffic is already rolling and they fini ahead of schedule. >> that is right. we are standing on mariposa looking down. there are cars rolling. it is officially open. there are no problems. cars are driving smoothly with

no issues. they shut down a section of 280 over the long weekend to repair an old hinge that was holding the freeways together. while the lanes were closed, caltrain decided to take advantage of the time and get their own crews out there and they did extra work on 280 so must-needed repairs and wear and tear replacing the signs. they got some extra work done and are considering it a successful week. they think they will do this again but it will be northbound side fourth of july and labor day. the memorial day weekend the closure is behind it and it is called a "success." >> this morning all but three of the 13 people wounded in the deadly rampage at uc santa barbara have been released from the hospital while through details are emerging about the killer and
