three victims frr the bay area. they were friends. the young men were found stabbed inside of the apartment where james and david lived with the gunman. >> abc7 news reporter live in isla vista now. mary? >> reporter: you can see students here filing into the stadium behind me and are about to host a memorial service to honor those who died the community heading down the long road to recovery. 19-year-old veronica wiess was a college freshman with dreams of a career in finance. dreams denied when she was shot and killed by a gunman on a shooting spree. her father, an abc employee told abc radio he feels sadness not anger. >> the world lost great kids. >> there were red flags about the gunman that killed six and wounded 13. a murder plot detailed in his

chilling 137 page manifesto. he e mailed the horrific plan in the minutes before he opened fire. but it was too late for them to save the victims. the rampage began in rodgers apartment. police discovered stabbed to death his two roommates and a visiting friend. his next target was a sorority house, an attempt to exact revenge on women he said rejected him. >> i'm going to enter the hottest sorority house of ucsd. he banged on the door. out sigh, he shot three women, killing two. next, a deli. panicked students dodged students and one was killed. >> we're trying to do is understand why chris died and try to make it mean something. because otherwise, it's just so

angeles courtroom today as jury selection began in a civil case filed over his attack that took place outside dodger stadium three years ago. stow, from santa cruz watched from his wheelchair as perspective jurors received instructions he suffered disabling brain damage during a beating by two dodger fans outside of the stadium in april, 2011. the suit seeks millions in damages from the dodgers and team former owner. >> two kaiser permanente buildings reopened after a criminal threat forced them to close this morning. the closure mainly affected patients who had morning appointments or needed to pick upper skripgss this afternoon. oakland police have not specified what is included in the threat. >> checking on the accu-weather

among those that will speak is the father of victim chris martinez along with uc system president janet napolitano we'll keep you posted as events unfold after what has been a horrific weekend at ucsb. moving on the president announced an agreement for u.s. troop withdrawal from afghanistan. but the agreement to keep just under 10,000 troops there after this year is contingent on the afghan government signing a agreement. it's america's longest war and today, president obama announced his game plan in afghanistan. >> now, we're finishing the job we've started. >> right now, there are 32,000 u.s. troops in afghanistan the figure dropping to # 800 after combat operations end this year.

the father posted this picture for his wife. it reads, quote, my boy west was just discharged from ucsf. it was exciting to see him in his car seat for the first time and to take him home. now i'm on my own with west. these are new pictures of baby west. there he is taking a nap. doctors delivered the healthy baby last week. the mother has been in a coma since she suffered a seizure in march. she'll be transferred to an intense brain rehab clinic to undergo more they are yeah p to try to wake her. a college sophomore is the youngest person to try to fly solo around the world the 19-year-old plans to take off from san diego tomorrow, saying his passion began at a young age. the trip will include 20 stops on five continents. >> i'm not nervous.
