remembered tonight. that was a very emotional day of mourning at uc santa barbara today for that service. abc7 news reporter attended the memorial and is live tonight from isla vista with coverage. that might have been pro found. >> yes. a powerful event. there is 15,000 people expected the stadium holds about 20,000 people. there are students sitting out on the field. it just wrapped up half an hour ago. one of the more powerful speakers a father of a student killed friday night. richard martinez is the father of a student doned down at the deli friday night. he called for students to mobilize to try to stop the violence. >> do you agree that the people in washington stud hear that not one more person should have to

die because of this ridiculous situation, then when i raise my hand i want you to shout so loud, that they're going to hear you. >> not one more! >> also in attendance, parents of george chen, before coming to the stadium they visited a small memorial of flowers and candles outside of the capri apartments talking with us about their son last night. >> we never thought this would happen to our son. he's a smart, diligent kid he -- it's one of the nicest boys i can imagine. >> they say their son lived in student housing but was visiting friends so they wanted to know where he died >> we wanted to see the place. >> they were at the memorial along with parents of the other two young men from the bay area killed at the capri apartments last night. george's parents talked with students there.

district attorney three years ago, he inherited a backlog of murder cases. some 8 to 9 years old. he was able to clear them, but this was an example of that bold adage, wheels of justice grind slowly. monica gonzales's 19-year-old son was stabbed to death in a party near san francisco state. police arrested martin martinez the next morning. the murder happened october 28, 2008. it's been almost six years the case has yet to go to trial. >> i'm angry. sad. and i can't take it anymore. i loved my son. i just want stay with us jus tis for him. that is all. >> monica's letters to politicians have not been returned she can't make sense out of answers she's heard in pretrial hearings. >> the defense has other cases, there is not a courtroom. someone is taking vacation. >> i personally don't like to

see any case sit around for a long time. >> but the district attorney says many things complicated case. there have been a succession of prosecutors and request for delays by the prosecutor. >> we've been ready to go to trial multiple times. the defense was not. >> after building for six years have you to wonder, what is going on? >> joe toomy says murder cases do take a long time to go to trial, but this is rare. he says long waits take a toll on cops, as well. >> there is nothing to tell the family. how many times can you tell the family it's been delayed? >> the defendant's attorney told us on the phone all parties want this to be concludeed and work towards that goal. but remember, martinez has been in custody the whole time. toomy says the defendant is not the only one with a right to a speedy trial. >> the people have a right to a
