the first pitch flubbed from rap icon, 50 cent. his throw from the mound going terribly wrong last night. how did this music superstar get so off pitch? and good morning, america. we're going to have to get a redo on friday. have a lot of news to get to this morning. including, nsa leaker, edward snowden. he's speaking out now. we'll get reaction from secretary john kerry. and the secretary's response for the troop withdraw from afghanistan. first, let's get to the death of maya angelou. we learned she was found dead in her home by her caretaker.

linsey davis has more on the woman who taught so many the power of the personal story. >> the story is my favorite place to be. alone and empty in the morning, it looked like an unopened present from the stranger. >> reporter: out the history shame up from the past rooted in pain. not only words of her poetry, they might as well be lines ripped from the pages of her life story. maya angelou did rise as a writer, dancer, and actress and most significantly as an educator. she taught the world about the power of words. >> i wrote this for every human being on earth. >> reporter: she was raised in arkansas 20 miles away from a town called hope. at 7 years old she was raped by her mother's boyfriend. she told on him and he was subsequently killed.

the event caused her to stop speaking for 5 1/2 years. ♪ i'm driven lord >> but once she opened her mouth her tongue became a pen of a skillful poet. poet poetty cured her mutiny she read "the heart of a woman" and "i know why the caged bird sings." in 1993, at president bill clinton's request. she wrote a poem. >> lift up your eyes, give birth again to the dream. women, children, men, take it into the palming of your hands. >> reporter: she combined her rich tenor with wisdom and became a sculptor of words ♪ i opened my mouth to the lord and i won't turn back no ♪

>> reporter: thousands pouring into a stadium for a memorial to remember the six killed and wounded for the deadly rampage that rocked this town to the core. >> why have such a beautiful place and beautiful people be hurt in this way. >> for as long as we hold them in our hearts they are not gone. >> reporter: at the podium. former u.s. homeland security secretary, janet napolitano and father the victim christopher michaels martinez, a future lawyer, and only child killed when gunman elliott rodger opened fire in this deli. >> if you agree that the people in washington should hear that not one more person should have to die, then when i raise my hand, i want you to shout so loud. >> not one more. >> not one more!

>> reporter: martinez reading statements on behalf of the families of rodger's roommate, james chang hong and his friend found stopped to death in their apartment, along with another roommate. george chen. earlier in the day sorority members holding hands outside the house where two sisters were shot to death and still so many questions whether anyone could have stopped rodger from carrying the plot he laid out in the 137-page manifesto called "my twisted world" now these students ready to return to the final two weeks of school with this hope. yes, there were resounding cheers out here. the classrooms will open within the hour. there will be memorials all week long and counselors on hand for it all. i can tell you this is a student body that will continue to

grieve for a very long time to come. we turn now to edward snowden, now in russia after revealing u.s. secrets. in televised interviews he revealed he wasn't a computer hacker, he said he was a high-level international spy. martha raddatz has more. >> you remember, he was referred to as a 24-year-old young hacker. 29-year-old hacker, with others describing him simply as a systems administrator. but snowden told brian williams, his role was much bigger than that. >> i was trained as a spy, in the traditional sense of the world, that i lived and worked undercover, overseas, pretending to work in a job that i'm not. and even being assigned a name that was not mine. i've worked for the central intelligence agency, undercover, overseas. i've worked for the national security agency overseas. and i worked for the defense agency overseas.

>> reporter: those agencies won't comment this morning. but he did have access to our country's most secret documents, downloading 1.7 million of them, which revealed more than has ever been revealed before about our intelligence gathering. lara? >> unbelievable. thank you so much, martha raddatz, in washington. george has more on this now. george? >> thanks. let's take this straight to the secretary of state, john kerry. mr. secretary, thank you for joining us. we heard from edward snowden right there. he said he was a spy, not a hacker. and last year, you said people may die because of his disclosures. do you have any evidence that people have, in fact, died because of his revelations? >> we have evidence that people are in additional danger because operational security has been breached. terrorists have learned firsthand, about methods and mechanisms in which the united states collects intelligence. and so, our operations have been compromised.

it's plain and simple. >> and let me move, now, to afghanistan because the president announced yesterday that all u.s. troops would be home by the end of 2016. and that's drawn a pretty harsh response from some of your former republican colleagues in the senate. john mccain, lindsey graham, kelly ayotte, called it a monumental mistake that will embolden our enemies. your response? >> i flatly disagree. there seems to be an industry of automatic opposition to anything. but the fact is, that everything that has been accomplished in afghanistan in the last five years has been accomplished with a deadline. when president obama came in, there was no policy. the president increased the troops. put a policy in place. and set a deadline for the afghans to take over security. guess what? they met the deadlines. the fact is, george, if you tell the afghans that we'll be there as long as it

takes, believe me, they will take as long as they want. it's only by setting a target that you can shift responsibility. >> after 2016, that force will be below 1,000 soldiers and other official, i believe. what happens is al qaeda returns in force. is the president prepared to stop the withdraw and send troops back in? >> the united states will do, and this president will do whatever is necessary to protect the united states of america, our forces, and our citizens. >> this has been america's longest war. is it ending in victory? >> i think it's ending in the best thing you can do, which is give the afghans the opportunity to decide their own future. this is their country, george. they have to want to fight for it. they have to be prepared to fight for it. and right now, they are. >> finally, sir, i want to ask you about the nigerian schoolgirls. yesterday, the nigerian defense chief said he knows where they are, where they're being held. does the u.s. know where they are? and does our government agree

with the nigerian not to man a rescue operation right now? >> i'm not going to get into the operational component of this, george. i will tell you that we do not yet have confirmation. but we have the people on the ground. and we're working very, very closely with the nigerian government. and obviously, we're hopeful that those girls can be returned to their homes. if there's any indication where they are, i can assure you we will know it quickly. >> thank you very much for your time this morning. >> thank you. let's get this morning's other top stories from amy. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with new concerns about medical care in the military. this morning, the army has fired the commander at one of its busiest hospitals. colonel steven brewster has been relieved of duty at ft. bragg womack medical center. his top deputies also have been suspended after two young patients unexpectedly died in the hospital's emergency room. those follow recent concerns of infection control at that facility. chuck hagel is ordering a 90-day review of the military's entire health care system. hagel is under increasing

pressure after reports of treatment delays and secret waiting lists at v.a. facilities. the state department is warning americans in libya to leave the country immediately because of growing security concerns there. just yesterday, gunmen attacked the home of libya's prime minister. a navy warship with 1,000 marines onboard has been sent to the region, in case evacuations are needed. and in central california, five firefighters have been injured battling a fire that erupted on monday. fumed by hot, dry conditions. mandatory evacuations have been ordered. and 100 homes are threatened. this is an incredible story. a mother in canada is thanking facebook for helping to find her baby after a kidnapping in a hospital maternity ward. surveillance video shows the moments before a woman posing as a nurse, took the newborn from a quebec hospital. staff and police quickly posted an image on facebook. and within minutes, a former neighbor recognized the woman, drove that her house and called

police, who broke down the door and rescued baby victoria. she was back in her parents' arms within three hours. amazing. and finally, it could be the worst ceremonial pitch ever thrown at a baseball game. take a look at rapper 50 cent takes the mound at the mets game. nearly hit a photographer. but since 50 is joining us this friday for our summer concert series, we're going to make him feel a little better. we we're going to show him other pitches that are worse than his. a few years back at yankees stadium, chris rock joined adam sandler on the mound. his pitch over the catcher's head. and this classic, mariah carey in her short-shorts and heels, walking very slowly. oh. her pitch speaks for itself. it's funny because when 50 cent was asked about his pitch, he said that his alter ego, chris jackson, actually threw the pitch. he doesn't know what was wrong with that guy. if 50 had thrown the pitch, he

would have been spot-on. we'll maybe give him a redo, right? 50 cent, this friday, in the park. don't miss it. we'll see what we can get him to do. >> free clinic. >> a little cage. he can throw. >> thank you, amy. we turn, now, to the u.s. marine being held in a mexican jail, arrested nearly two months ago for crossing the border with three loaded guns. he says it's all a mistake. and this morning, he'll make his case to a judge. pierre thomas is in washington with the story. >> reporter: good morning. a u.s. marine reservist says he has done nothing wrong. he's in jail in mexico fighting for his freedom. after nearly two months in jail, for the first time, u.s. marine andrew tahmooressi appear in front of a mexican judge for gun charges. he said it was all a mistake. he was out for a drive home, accidentally took the wrong

exit. left california and ended up in mexico. he said he volunteered to mexican authorities that he had legally registered weapons in his car. a loaded assault rifle, a pistol and a shotgun. >> i'm having a little bit of an emergency here. >> reporter: here he is, calling 911 on march 31st, at the time, asking for help. >> i crossed the border by accident. and i have three guns in my truck. and they are trying to possess. they're trying to take my guns from me. >> so, you're in mexico? >> yeah. >> there's nothing i can help you with, sir. i do apologize. you're not on american soil anymore. i can't really help you. >> reporter: but mexican authorities did not believe his story and locked him up. he now faces years in jail if convicted. the state department is actively engaged in the case. but so far, no breakthrough. tahmooressi, who did two tours of duty in afghanistan, described his desperation in this interview. with the san diego union tribune. so desperate, he says, he even tried to escape. >> i was nervous, you know, because i was missing my family. didn't seem like i had any hope at all.

and the people in there, they started messing with me. >> i want all of the legislators to know that we've got a marinei who desperately needs his freedom. i mean, he fought for this country, willing to die. >> reporter: this is complicated. according to the u.s. consulate in tijuana, in mexico, you're guilty until proven innocent. and mexican authorities have been deeply concerned about the flow of thousands of guns from the u.s. george? >> this is a strange case. okay, pierre, thanks. let's get the latest on donald sterling and the l.a. clippers. he's responding to the nba, vowing to keep his team, even as his wife takes steps to sell it. ryan smith has been tracking the story from the start. >> reporter: this morning, embattled los angeles clippers' owner, donald sterling, says the nba should give up its plan to oust him over his racist remarks. insisting in what he calls a

illegally recorded, quote, lovers quarrel, was to strip him of his constitutional right. in the 32-page response released overnight, sterling also denied the nba's allegations against him and said that a forced sale would leave his family, quote, owing several hundred million dollars in taxes. next up, that june 3rd hearing, where if three-fourths of the nba's board of governors votes to sustain the charge, sterling and wife, shelly, would be forced to sell. >> this is the sterlings' last play. they have a chance to have some say over lou the team is sold. but the nba holds the cards here. >> reporter: the nba confirming, that vote is still scheduled to happen. while shelly sterling told barbara walters just this month, she plans on keeping the clippers. >> i think half the team is mine. and i'll fight for it. >> reporter: according to espn, shelly is fielding inquiries from at least six serious bidders. including steve balmer. stars like oprah, floyd mayweather, grant hill have also

expressed interest. espn has also learned shelly wants bids by today. and a sale done before that june 3rd hearing. her attorney also telling abc news overnight, that mr. sterling, quote, has authorized shelly to, quote, negotiate the sale. but donald sterling's lawyer tells espn, his client was, quote, disavowing anything she's doing to sell the team. and any attempts to sell the team may be fruitless. even if shelly sterling were to sell the team by june 3rd, the nba has to approve any new primary owner. and may not accept any deal, whether either sterling owns part of the team. they want to make sure they are out of it completely. dan abrams is here. sterling is threatening to sue. can he win that case? >> very unlikely. it's an impressive document they put together, considering how much the facts and the sort of nba constitution work against him. so, i think that they recognize it's a real long shot for sterling. but he wants to keep the fight going. >> see how long it goes. now, let's get to ginger. you have the thunderstorms in new orleans. a lot of flooding today. >> severe storms happening along the gulf coast. that's why we want to begin in

are calling what happened, an accident. the other side, murder. >> there's a guy laying in the road. possibly dead. he got hit by a car. >> reporter: this is the frantic calls for help outside of ed's tavern. the driver who was not charged, also called police. and said he couldn't stop. police did arrest 23-year-old kenan gay, saying he shoved kingston into the street after a fight at the bar. he's on trial for second-degree murder. he is a law student and a former north carolina university football player, out with his girlfriend, who is now his wife. he said he was defending her. >> the fellow was putting his hands on my client's girlfriend. my client was trying to get her away from him. and it was right near the road. >> reporter: gay is pleading not guilty. jurors being selected today will

most likely hear that kingston was drunk. according to police reports, his blood alcohol level was four-times the legal limit. but jurors will hear from the bar owner. >> the suspect didn't pause. ran straight towards the sidewalk. stopped at the end of the sidewalk. and tossed him into the street. >> reporter: witnesses say that gay looked just as shocked as everyone else when kingston was killed. but then ran and had to be chased down. >> blonde, tall guy about 6'3", 6'4". >> reporter: gay could get up to decades in prison if he's convicted. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. let's talk to dan abrams. pretty straightforward case. >> the facts become so important here. on the one hand, you have the bar owner, taking this guy and throwing him into the street. right? that's not just protecting your girlfriend. that's taking someone, removing him from the bar.

walking him, in effect, into traffic. if the jury believes that, that's murder. the defense says, that's not what happened. what happened is, he simplyxd trying to get this guy off his girlfriend. pushes him. the guy stumbles into the road and gets hit by traffic. >> so, the surveillance camera, critical. >> the surveillance camera is going to be very important, as is the t!k)%5=9e of his now-wife. she becomes crucial in this case. >> wouldn't you expect she's going to defend him? >> and she may prevent him from having to testify. you expect she will support his account. but if she's able to support each and every part of his account, she says she was being harassed by this guy. that's where the surveillance tape is going to be important. does it seem like she was encouraging at all? et cetera, that becomes important in the context of the case. she is going to likely say, i was trying to get him off me. i wanted this guy away from me. my then-boyfriend comes up, protects me, pushes him, and the guy falls. >> how about the fact that gay

ran away? >> i don't think that's going to be a make or break issue. it's not helpful to the defense. but it's not going to be the key to the case. there you see, a picture of the bar and how far it is from the street. the question is, will a jury believe that he pushes him from the bar. the guy literally stumbles until he gets to the road and gets hit by a car. >> okay. dan abrams, thanks very much. we move to a burglar caught red-handed thanks to technology. a man watched on his cell phone as a man broke into his house. and with a push of a button, able to use the same phone to scream at the cook, through speakers installed in the house. reena ninan explains it all. >> reporter: what you're about to see is an alleged home invasi invasion, with an unexpected twist. watch as the alleged burglar slides open the unlooked sliding glass door. he turns around a surveillance

camera. what he doesn't know, two other cameras are still rolling, detecting every motion he makes. >> it was the real thing. and it happened to me. >> reporter: 29-year-old nisarg was eating dinner nearby, when he says his dropcam security htemñr sent an smartphone, telling him his sliding door had been opened. >> it's pitch dark. but these cameras have night vision. >> reporter: he says he watched as the invader grabbed his electronic equipment. he fought back with his iphone. tapping into one of the camera's loud speakers. >> i simply told him, hey, i can see you. just, please leave my home. >> reporter: scared, the alleged burglar does exactly that. >> being embraced more and more by the mainstream, as situations like this happen and we see proof of their effectiveness. >> reporter: thanks to this surveillance footage, police quickly tracked down the ñi suspect,xd 22-year-old.

i'd be concerned about taking this stuff for a long-term. >> the other big question. every time one of these crazes comes up, we ask the question, is there a quick fix to a problem like this, being overweight? or just struggling with weight? >> it's so hard. there's so many people who want to lose weight and need to lose weight for their health. but you can't keep doing what you're doing now, in terms of what you're eating and how you're moving and expect there to be a change. but the idea there's something you can take that's going to answer all those questions is really enticing. there's a lot of money to be made off of weight loss products. and so, you're going to see stuff like this come up again and again. >> there's stuff to take for constipation. >> well -- >> right. >> but it's not being put forward that way. >> and that's the danger here. it's being touted as, sort of a quick fix. >> exactly. exactly. and this is one that i would not recommend. >> there you go. >> thank you.
