angelou moved to oakland with her mother at age 14, studying dance and drama in san francisco, became the city's 1 african american street car conductor. she told her protegee, oprah, her mother encouraged her to fight for the job. >> i went down to place an application. they wouldn't even give it to me. i went to my mother and said they won't allow me to apply. she asked me why. do you know why? i said yes, because i'm a negro. she said do you want the job? i said yes, and she said go get it. >> she expanded into writing penning several auto biographies and collections of poetry. maya angelou had a lasting impact and connection with glide memorial church.

update on breaking news out of vallejo. several small brush fires. >> these fires in between connector ramps for interstates 780 and 80 converge. we're joined by officer daniel hill. officer hill, thanks for joining us. what can you tell us about the fires at this point? what is the level of containment? >> well, sure. at 3:30 p.m we received reports of a fire off the right shoulder of the eastbound 780 to westbound 80. that fire escalated because of the dry brush, spreading across the freeway into the center

divide. at this point, it's a three-alarm fire. both benicia and vallejo fire are on scene. they're doing mostly clean up now, but the smoldering is creating heavy smoke the chp shut down all transition roads at this time. we expect to reopen them as soon as we can get the fire contained sorry. smoke contained and more manageable. >> officer, any idea what caused this? is there a car that overheated? anything like that? >> no. the fire team off of the freeway near residences in the area. we don't know about the cause of that. once the fire is put out, fire inspectors are likely to figure out if this is caused by perhaps an encampment or a residence. that is under investigation at this time. >> real quickly. how bad is the traffic right there? >> 780 moving as expected it's like traffic at this time. however, interstate 80 in both
