>> good afternoon, everyone, i'm larry beil >> the san jose police department is dealing with another problem, it's having trouble keeping officers over pay and pension issues. >> this week, four more resigned and this time for a new reason. abc7 news joins us live now in san jose with more. vic? >> well, the four officers from the department turned their badges in on monday. now, the new changes in this city's pension reform policies of measure b went into affect just on friday. measure b disability retirement plan has been a hot button issue

for the police union. measure b approved by voters in 2012, the union said one big reason is that injured cops who still work, could be left without a job or a pension. under the retirement limits of the proposition. that eliminating a safety net for officers getting hurt in the line of duty the change the counsel is offering allows cops and firefighters who don't qualify for disability retirement under measure b to get jobs elsewhere in the city, where there are retirement benefits, they'd be able to keep their old pay scale. now before that, all veteran cops went across the street to work at district attorneys, investigate scombroerz say the uncertainty of the new disability rules left them with no choice. the detective is a 12-year veteran. >> i've been hurt in the line of duty with the police department. they took care of me. i had to learn how to walk again

for help the shooter ran out the police haven't ruled out a possibility this is gang related. >> police have arrested this man, a 32-year-old phat lamb, accused of drunk driving in a richmond strict. it happened around morning and police say left him pinned underneath it before police arrived. >> in los angeles a jury heard opening statements today in a civil suit filed by brian stow. stow was in court for jury selection walking are from his wheelchair. he suffered brain damage and has a permanent disability. the civil jury will decide where the dodgers provided sufficient security in 2011.

not the way you might expect. there was a crime. someone broke into a car leaving a devastated mom without a birthday gift for her 3-year-old son. so the officer decided he was going to get involved and lend a hand the next day the officer showed up with a cake, a card and a birthday present for the little boy. he gave mom a $100 gift card. he says he did it because it was the right thing to do. >> so sweet. yes. nice when they go the extra mile. >> perseverance is a common theme of high school speeches . >> griffin is graduating at the top of his class in jacksonville his gpa is 4.65. >> he has been homeless, off and on for years following the death of his mom the 18-year-old never spoke
