it hadn't happened in 50 years. good friday morning. we do begin with the battle for ownership of the los angeles clippers. >> there is a deal on the table for former microsoft ceo steve ballmer, to buy the team. but clippers owner, donald sterling, says he won't sell. abc's tahman bradley has the overnight developments. >> reporter: it looks like the los angeles clippers have a new owner. espn is reporting the sterling family trust signed an agreement on thursday to sell the team to former microsoft chief steve ballmer. the price tag, a record $2 billion. the agreement was reached without the blessing of owner donald sterling. his wife, shelly, pushed the sale. mr. sterling may consider legal action. >> there's something really wrong. somebody is talking to the girlfriend in the privacy of their home. and then, winds up losing his life and his property. >> reporter: shelly sterling had

hoped to find a buyer before an nba meeting next tuesday, when league owners could have snatched the clippers from the family as punishment for donald sterling's racist comments about african-americans. there were reportedly three bids for the clippers, all north of $1 billion. the relationship between donald and shelly sterling is complicated. >> we're still married. but we're estranged. we have more of a business arrangement in our relationship. and we have a love relationship. >> reporter: shelly sterling's agreement with ballmer goes straight to the nba for final approval. but donald sterling is not backing down. >> it's not going to go away just by a sale. he's not going to -- he doesn't want written on his tombstone, donald sterling, racist. >> reporter: steve ballmer worth more than $20 billion, would become the richest majority owner in sports. he was vetted by the nba back when he was part of a group trying to buy the sacramento

kings. john and diana? >> all right, tahman. thank you. we'll be following that today. another big story on this friday. the embattled head of the v.a. has a high-profile appearance today before a group of veterans. >> eric shinseki is expected to outline his plan to resolve the crisis in health care at v.a. hospitals. his job could be on the line. here's abc's jonathan karl. >> reporter: sonia nicastro's husband, ralph, a vietnam veteran, died last year while waiting more than a year to get cancer treatment at the v.a. hospital in phoenix. she told abc news, she wants the man in charge to go. >> secretary shinseki needs to be removed. i don't care if he steps down, gets fired. he needs to be gone. >> reporter: and there's a drumbeat in congress, too. in the wake of the blockbuster report finding systemic deception and incompetence, delaying care for thousands of veterans, at least 100 members of congress, many of them democrats, have called on shinseki to resign. the big question now, what about the commander in chief? very simple yes or no question. does the president have confidence in secretary shinseki?

>> jon, the president addressed this question from the podium. >> reporter: he wasn't asked directly. does he have confidence in secretary shinseki? >> the president believes and is confident that secretary shinseki has served his nation admirably, heroically as a soldier. >> reporter: does the president, right now, have confidence in secretary shinseki? yes or no? it's a very simple yes or no question. you told us last week he did have confidence. does he have confidence now? secretary shinseki is digging in. in a closed door meeting with veterans groups, he vowed to fix the mess. >> at the end of the day, he's used to being shot at and blown up. so, this probably doesn't distract him that much. >> reporter: jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. one week after the deadly rampage near the university of california santa barbara, we're now learning new details. the santa barbara sheriff's office says deputies were told the shooter, elliot rodger, had posted disturbing videos online.

but they didn't view the videos when they visited rodger at his apartment last month. a former roommate says he was also concerned after overhearing rodger on the phone with his parents. >> the topic matter was there is a lot of frustration for how he's not having a good time at school. and how no one seems to want to hang out with him. and it just got more and more serious. >> coming up on "good morning america," an exclusive interview with one of the sorority members who was injured in the attack. the search for the missing malaysia airlines jet is just starting what will be a months' long break. during that time, more powerful sonar equipment will be brought in to search the floor of the southern indian ocean. investigators said yesterday that the area where some of those pings were detected is not the plane's final resting place. firefighters had a tough time battling a massive building fire near l.a. it broke out last night at a metal plant before growing out of control and spreading to adjoining commercial buildings, trucks, even r.v.s. the entire building collapsed. and the smoke could be seen

miles away. but there were no reports of any injuries. and a fire at a fertilizer storage facility has forced the evacuation of a five-block radius in athens, texas. flames shot 60 feet in the air at the height of the fire. firefighters had to stand down and let it burn itself out because the ammonium nitrate was stored at that facility. that's the same fertilizer that sparked the explosion that killed 15 people in the town of west last year. this time, though, no one was injured. a little bit of intrigue at the white house. first, "people" magazine tweeted this photo of hillary clinton, mentioning that she was on her way to a meeting at the white house. then, the tweet disappeared. later, the white house confirmed that clinton and president obama shared a private lunch. apparently it was so private, that it never appeared on the president's daily schedule. south of the white house, last night, an event that was

southwest will also pay another $100,000 for another similar offense. facebook founder mark zuckerberg and his wife are donating $120 million to san francisco bay area schools. it is the biggest allocation to date of the $1.1 billion of the facebook stock that the couple pledged last year to the nonprofit silicon valley community foundation. four years ago, zuckerberg donated $100 million to the newark, new jersey, school system. critics say there's been a little improvement but not as much as there should be. ford recalling more than 1 million cars among several newer models for potential steering problems. the popular ford taurus and other models are being recalled because of problems with the license plate lights and floor mats. "maleficent" is poised to cast a spell on moviegoers this weekend. disney's new twist on "sleeping beauty" starring angelina jolie is expected to wrack up $60 million at the box office. seth macfarlane's crude comedy, "a million ways to die in the west" is expected to make $25 million.

fetal position on my left side. and then, she kind of scratched me good or bit me or tried to stay down, or however. again, i didn't even try to stand up. i didn't even try to fight back. >> and then, she says the bear left. gamboa suffered lacerations to her neck, arms, legs and a torn ear and neck injuries. she was released from the hospital yesterday. now, to a health alert about measles. there have been 288 cases so far this year, the most since the virus was eliminated in the u.s. back in 2000. the biggest outbreak is among the amish in ohio. many of them were unvaccinated and got the measles during a trip to the philippines. abc's dr. richard besser says vaccination is the key. >> i talked to the cdc about this. and they're very concerned. there's two things they want everyone to do. if you're an adult and you are traveling overseas, make sure you've had at least two doses of measles vaccine. if you're unsure, get the

vaccine again. it's safe. for everyone here, make sure you and your children are vaccinated fully and on time. >> and dr. besser says measles is not just a nuisance. it can be deadly. before vaccinations began in the early 1960s, measles sent 48,000 americans a year to the hospital. about 500 died. the government has announced new and tougher laws on tanning beds used by millions of americans. the fda says sun lamps must now carry black box warnings, cautioning anyone under 18 not to use them. but officials stopped short of banning their use by minors. experts say using an indoor tanning salon even once increases the risk of melanoma by 59%. now, to a medical emergency that forced singer bret michaels off the stage last night in new hampshire. three songs in, michaels was forced to leave the stage, suffering from extremely low blood sugar. he's had type 1 diabetes since childhood. michaels was treated by paramedics. he has since apologized to his fans. no word on whether the scheduled

♪ dannon pushing the limits. however, i didn't know the impact a brain injury can have. the risk got real for me after sustaining a traumatic brain injury while i was training for the 2010 winter olympics. you really need to educate yourself about brain injuries and how dangerous they can be. after my injury the doctors were saying that the helmet saved my life. wearing a helmet to prevent severe traumatic brain injury is a must... and so is learning what you can do to prevent concussion.
