>> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us on this sunday, june 1st. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> the fog is behind you and the sun was up ten minutes ago. we are looking at the dense fog along the coast. half moon bay, and novato. it is awfully gray but the marine layer is shallow. 46 with the fog in novato. clear in concord at 52. you have clear sky in livermore. here's a look at the visibility in miles. and you will notice that it is over into the east bay but will get into some clearing quicker today. that means a modest warmup around the by and inland. we will see mid-and upper 80s inland. oakland today in the low 70s to upper 70s out toward castro valley. along the coast not much change.

clouds, breezy winds and temperatures in the 60s to the upper 60s, perhaps 70 degrees down around the airport. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. we have developing news out of san francisco this morning. where fbi agents are looking for a man believed to be armed and dangerous. authorities raided the apartment yesterday of ryan chamberlain and uncovered a large amount of what is believed to be ricin, one of the deadliest poisons in the world. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson has the story. >> dressed if full haz mat suits and mask, investigators were in and out of the polk and jackson street ground-level apartment all day. they removed a toolbox from the one bedroom unit and examined it in the courtyard. at one point robot x-ray machines and bomb disposal robot were both used. they watched from the rooftop.

they claimed no one was in danger and no one needed to evacuate. >> there is no risk to public safety. >> reporter: residents of the 16-unit building, subject of the searched apartment as a quiet man in his late 30s. >> i met him once or twice before. he's kind of a quiet guy. nice enough. >> he's not been seen all day. >> where is he right now? does he know? did he know it was going to happen? it's so random and weird. >> reporter: investigators were sprayed off once they emerged from the building. many folks didn't know what to make of the scene. >> i thought it looked like another crazy day in the city, like they were filming a movie, but they were not. >> reporter: #*. >> reporter: around dusk, the fire and police department both switched out their crews as the fib set up a mobile command truck. once again, the fbi is searching for ryan chamberlain, the man who lived at the apartment. they are warning anyone who sees

him that he could be armed and dangerous and they are asking you to call police. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> one of the bay area students killed in the isla vista rampage will be remembered with the memorial service today. 20-year-old david wong and two friends from the bay area were the first of six victims of elliot roger who went on a rampage last week. one person died after a big rig and two cars collided on highway 84. they believe the semi hit a ford on highway 84 near interstate 680. it appeared an s.u.v. then hit the two other vehicles around 5:45 yesterday evening. two people were hurt. highway 84 has reopened. we now know the name of a

man hit and killed by a bart train. he is 22-year-old tyler warden of el~cerrito. he died after being struck by a san francisco-bound train near the west oakland station. they believe he was walking in a restricted area along the tracks late friday night when he was hit. after five years in captivity, the last american soldier held captive by the taliban in afghanistan is a free man. 28-year-old sergeant bow bergdahl was released in exchange for five afghan detainees from guantanamo bay in cuba. abc reporter michelle franson has the story. >> release me, please. i'm begging you. >> reporter: the sergeant's plea has been answered. after five years the only american prisoner in afghanistan is now on his way home. u.s. special forces picked him up by helicopter from his taliban captors in the middle of the night along the afghanistan-pakistan border.

they told him we've been looking for you for a long time. bergdahl broke down in tears. >> officials say he was released in a three-party prisoner exchange. one american for five afghan taliban prisoners being detained at guantanamo bay, cuba. america america's ally, cutter, acted as a mediator in secret negotiations so the u.s. did not deal directly with the taliban. the afghans will not be allowed to leave cutter for at least one year. >> he wasn't forgotten by his community in idaho or the military. and he wasn't forgotten by his company. >> bergdahl's family got a call are from president obama and later joined him in the rose garden. >> i just want to say thank you to everyone who supported us both. >> i would like to say for beau, right now, who is having trouble speaking english, i'm your father, beau.

jew back in idaho, his hometown is preparing to celebrate their son's return. >> the community has not wavered in their commitment to get him free. >> i think we were the first ones to burst into tears and couldn't get silly grins off their faces. >> abc news, new york. >> more trouble at napa state hospital. a social worker has suffered serious injuries after a patient attacked her. the latest assault happened friday when a patient hit the woman, pushed her to the floor and kicked her several times. other employees came to help after she reacted her personal alarm. last saturday a psychiatric technician escaped after being assaulted. these are the latest in a series of attacks on staff members by patients. a report filed in federal court said mental healthcare for california prisons is inadequate. patients with severe mental illness did not receive enough psychiatric care or given medication instead of one-on-one treatment and returned to soon.

republican presidential straw poll. you can catch "this week" here on abc7 at 8:00 this morning. residents of treasure island are told there will be more radiation testing done to verify the safety of their homes. abc7 news reporter nick smith talked to residents who are concerned about this ongoing problem. >> it's so close to our homes. and you know it. and you just let it sit there. >> residents of pressure island are pressing state officials for new information about possible health risks associated with radiation contamination at or near their homes. >> i would like to see them take these people, including myself, relocate us, even temporarily, until the redevelopment is finished. >> this as hundreds of families continue to live in buildings separated by wire fencing covered with green mesh inches from contamination testing sites. >> i'm not sure that all of this is being said.

so i just ask as many questions as i can. >> members of the media weren't allowed to hear what she asked. before the community meeting started officials moved me, my microphone and our abc7 news cameras to the next room, far away from representatives being questioned by residents and well out of ear shot. >> there are cleanup sites within the housing area. >> officials with the navy tell me they spent nearly $2 million to pay for the cleanup of the island and they are doing everything to warn residents of potential health risks by communicating their findings openly. >> we will continue until we get regulatory closer on each and every on the island. >> they will perform tests of every residence and collect the data. but that may not end it. abc7 news. >> decades of family fun have ended. a roller skating rink closed for the last time in san jose yesterday.

a roller derby topped last night's at san francisco skate before they shut its doors at 11:00 p.m. san jose skate opened 40 years ago. the final night on the rink attracted generations of people. >> this has been a huge part of my upbringing. i skated here all of my informative years. it was a mainstay in the community. >> very disappointed. we have a pretty large regular following. a lot of people are very sad they are closing. >> the building's owner is considering turning part of the rink into a gym. election day is right around the corner but californians aren't exactly no one for getting out the vote. according to a census report, california ranked 45th in the nation for voter registration and 48th in voter turnout. state officials say one in four californians eligible to vote is not registered. the majority of ballots will be

cast by mail, but in order for the votes to count the ballots have to be received in time. if your ballot isn't in by 8:00 p.m. on tuesday, election day, the vote will not be counted. if you haven't mailed in your ballot yet, you can drop it off at most polling places or at your local department of elections. a frenzy in southern california as the hidden cash movement continues. hundreds came to the beach yesterday look for money. the mystery millionaire behind the widthen accounts #hiddencash. they looked for the cash buried in the sand. the phenomenon is now spreading. a restaurant owner north carolina has been leaving cash around his neighborhood. he said he got the idea from the

bay area man who started it all. an oakland boy's choir has won an international contest after combining miley cyrus and the human digestive track. ♪ >> the singers are from the pacific boys choir academy. this is their take on the miley cyrus hit "wrecking ball" called" digest it all." they changed the words to tell how we process our food. they are challenged to submit musical parodies related to the human body. the oakland choir won in their age group of third to fifth-graders. a choir of high-schoolers from sir francis drake high was a semifinalist in its division. sometimes being a good guy pays off. it doesn't hurt if you also help -- happen to have a really nice

was performing last year. ite been a tough hole. but in recent years other musicians have helped him out and dylan, now 29 years old, has always stuck by his dad. they share a house in petaluma. >> i think every father who has a son should have a son as great as dylan is to me. >> dylan was four when he first performed with his father at lincoln center. ♪ [applause] >> dylan's voice has matured a little since then. he's performed all over the country with lester and other great musicians. always hoping for his first big break. and it may have finally come. a few months ago the legendary producer, garda, happened to hear him sing at a benefit. >> and i thought, whoa. >> the two connected instantly. >> we feel like it's god's calling to keep alive music, good music. keep alive the new artists and give them a chance.

>> narda went home and started writing a song for dylan. >> it was like five in the morning and he called me and said tell me what you think of this. and he started playing it through his phone and it just blew me away. >> they started recording the song at the studio. ♪ come back to me i miss you >> and the walls have many of the biggest names in the business. just standing on the carpet is magic. >> you stand here so you can feel all of the greats of that been here before you channeling their emergency. -- channeling their energy. aretha franklin, whitney hughes stan, mariah carey, smoky robinson, the temptations, they have all been here. >> but one place they are trying to shake off the past is with the old business model where huge record companies got most of the profits. that is what happened to his father, who got no royalties from his biggest hits.

coast or richmond. live doppler 7hd showing the low clouds and fog. they extend down to the san mateo coast and you, too, half moon bay and pacifica will once again experience the gray skies. but you can see the sun. it was up before 6:00. it's 51 in the city, 53 san jose with the clear sky. morgan hill, the cool spot, 47. and from the exploratorium camera, pretty gray right here through about the 10:00 hour we will have the clouds and then we will begin to experience more sunshine and a bit after warmup downtown. 53 in fairfield. and it's clear in concord and livermore. fog is here, half-mile to quarter visibility around santa rosa, napa and novato. san jose with the clear conditions this morning. shaping up to be a warmer afternoon, near 80 degrees. we also have some drizzle at the coast. 28 be warmer around the bay and inland, but then another system sneaks in here tomorrow, bringing significant cooling. in fact, it will take a while

for the clouds to clear. temperatures will drop big time. so high pressure is off the coast. it will allow for another system to slide in here tomorrow. but before then we are looking at a little bit of a warmup. so that means temperatures, in fact just a little bit above average. maybe two, three degrees above average here in the south bay. 83 los gatos. santa cruz coming up about three or four degrees. 80 in sunnyvale. we will still have the clouds from half moon bay and pacifica. no change here. but you get a couple miles away from the coast. and you are well into the 70s for redwood city, palo alto. san francisco maybe a degree warmer than you should be this time of year and warmer than yesterday. 66. 64 in the city. up in the north bay you notice significant warming. we have the down-sloping winds and that northerly gradient a little stronger than the on shore push. that results in temperatures near 90 degrees. 80 novato.

and into the east bay really nice afternoon with 72 hayward. newark 73. 76 seas tremendous valley and inland as much as six degrees warmer than afternoon. 81 san ramon valley, 86 livermore and brentwood, as well as fairfield. if you are headed back to san jose for a second time or just experiencing the greek festival today, temperatures in the upper 70s by the middle of the afternoon. slowly dropping with full sunshine. so nice-looking day. accuweather seven-day forecast, mid-70s and 80s around the bay today. a little reversal tomorrow with more of an on shore push. partly cloudy and high pressure builds for warmer conditions wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday with 60s at the coast. the breeze will be there but 80s and 90s around the bay. i'll let you know how warm it will nbcsn your community by keeping track of bay area whether or here at twitter at live doppler 7hd. >> so are the 09s above average? >> yeah, as much as 10 degrees

>> the co-owner of the "philadelphia inquirer" is one of those killed in a plane crash in massachusetts. it happened last night. the editor confirms the death of lewis cass. just last week they bought out the partners in the inquirer for $88 million. their small plane crashed shortly after takeoff on the way to the atlantic city international airport last night. >> six missing climbers are believed dead on mount ranier in washington state. this comes as searchers discovered pings buried in the snow. searchers discovered a debris feel, suggesting the climbers got stuck in an avalanche. they were due to return from the mountain friday. a park spokeswoman said there was no way they could have survived. search efforts are currently suspended. >> four people are safe this morning after a sinkhole swallowed their car in

southwestern indiana. the driver, his girlfriend and two children managed to climb to safety from the passenger's side before the car sank into the 16-foot deep hole inensville yesterday. officials say a water main and sewer line had failed in the area. two children escaped with minor injuries after a bounce house was swept away by the wind. the bouncy castle got carried away by a gust in littleton, colorado. it went about 300 feet before stopping. one child was ejected from the castle as it tumbles in a public park and the other remained inside. the castle's owner said it had been securely tied down. >> still to come, a new regulation for uber and lyft drivers. some call the bill that just passed the state assembly a stiff punch to the pocketbook. and coming to the rescue. how and where you can adopt a furry friend this weekend.

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. from our east bay hills camera, this is vollmer peak. you see that beacon? 977 feet above. that is sutro tower above twin peaks. we are looking at low fog and clouds maybe above 600 feet with the visibility reduced along the coast up through the north bay. 53 oakland with some fog. the fog extends all the way down to the central coast. the on shore flow out of the

west, 10 to 20 miles an hour in the city again today. no changes right at our beaches but we will see temperatures climb to near 80 degrees in santa rosa, san jose. plenty of mid-80s in our inland east bay. enjoy the warmup today. just a mini one. it's a one-day warmup. we will talk about our cool down in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. a bill that would require more insurance for yourer and lyft drivers even when they are not carrying passengers has passed the state assembly and now moves on to the abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom tells us why some reporters call it a public safety measure. some drivers simply believe it could be a stiff punch to the pocketbook. [chanting] >> a flurry of fuzzy big pink mustaches gathered at this office in california. the woman wrote this bill. it requires companies like lyft. >> uber to insure drivers up to $1 million, even when they don't

have a passenger in the car. >> it tells us to purchase insurance we already have. >> uber provided some coverage. they made the change after a uber driver struck and killed a 6-year-old girl and san francisco and uber claimed no responsibility since they had no passenger in the car at the time. yourer's new policy is if drivers are not logged into the app, they are under their own personal insurance. but if they are logged on, they are covered. if they are cruising around waiting for rides, uber provides a backup policy just in case the personal insurance denies them. this bill would get rid of the gray area. full coverage whenever it is on. >> i'm concerned it would be passed on to the drivers or passengers or both and that could hurt of the community for both. >> the concern over a shrinking bottom line comes with new numbers by lyft's competitors. suggesting the drivers on these new platforms can make a decent

living. >> people using their own vehicle can make $74,000, it's incredible. >> compare that to $39,000 for the average taxi driver. uber said it's because demand is through the roof. >> we're doing more trips per hour than we've ever done before. >> but be careful of those numbers. unlike cabbies, they have to take care of their own car. >> it's the cost of owning a car and putting a car on the road and it will put on a ton of mileage. >> and insurance is another big expense. the bill still would require -- wouldn't require lyft and yourer drivers to have as much insurance as a taxi. >> full time commercial delivery insurance. we all have it. why shouldn't they have it? why should be the public have that protection? >> in san francisco, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. >> happening today, thousands of cyclists are hitting the road today to ride for to end a.i.d.s.. there is a multi day ride. it ends in in santa cruz.

the ride called a.i.d.s. lifecycle is seven days and wraps up next weekend in l.a. the goal of the ride, to raise money and awareness for people living with hiv and a.i.d.s.. >> parts of sunnyvale will be fogged tomorrow night in an effort to suppress mosquitoes with the west nile virus. last week the santa clara county officials confirmed that mosquitoes in the 906 and 907 area codes tested positive for west nile. weather permitting, the fogging will begin tomorrow night at 11. the mosquitoes pass along the virus when they bite people. in rare cases the virus can lead to death. hall of fame golfer phil mickelson said he has done nothing wrong. he's under the microscope as part of an fbi investigation into insider trading. here's abc news chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis with the latest. >> phil mickelson is at this

tournament in ohio, one of the most popular, best known pro golfers in the world known for winning the masters three times. he has a great short game but mickelson is in the spotlight for another reason. the fbi and sec confirmed to abc news they are pursuing an insider trading probe involving mickelson, los angeles gambler whether i will walters, and investor carle icon. there were trades made in 2011 in clorox stock and investigating whether icon was attempting to take over the company at the time, could have tipped off his brother walters, who then he evens number of golf courses and he could have tipped off mickelson. >> he friend told her it's a good idea to invest in clorox. if he has no idea where the

generations to come. they go periodically to pick out songs from their massive library. >> we have a list. and they send it back. >> then the real work begins. ♪ >> each song is carefully transcribed with the accompanying sheet music. that way anyone picking up the song later will know just how to sing it. ♪ >> the american folk song collection will turn 46 this year. with funding from the university more than 300 songs have been painstakingly transcribed and cataloged. today they are now online for everyone to enjoy. ♪ >> some you might know. ♪ >> others will sound familiar. ♪ >> and some will sound

comes the sun." it's been sunny in the east bay valleys. live doppler 7 shows the low clouds and contact. it extends through oakland and it is going to be situated along the short line today once again. so the changes come away from the coast. a little bit of mist and drizzle this morning, as we. so we will look for a little mini warmup. you can see sutro tower there. this is a view from our vollmer peak camera. and the marine layer is showers this morning. because of that we have the fog being pressed down along the coast. oakland 53 degrees. gray skies. san jose sunny. 48 morgan hill. and this is what i mean from the exploratorium camera. you see the low ceilings. visibility anywhere from about a quarter mile to about two miles and the fog extends along the central coast. watsonville, salinas, and monterey. here is a sunny san jose. we will enjoy temperatures today a little above average here. numbers lout much of the south

bay will be pretty warm. but cooling comes in for everyone tomorrow. in fact, the low clouds and fog will be slow to burn back. we will have temperatures coming way down as the system visits us. behind us we have high fire danger in the sierra nevada and high pressure building in quickly for much of the upcoming work week. here's a look at the cloudy east bay. emeryville. and the average temperatures for this time of year from the mid-60s in san francisco and near 80 livermore. you see upper 70s for redwood city. so right around normal there. san francisco a degree above normal and anywhere from three to six degrees warmer than you should be from the bay to our inland east bay. you can see the sun setting at 8:26. so we should have a very nice afternoon. if you thought it was cool yesterday, you are right. onshore push allowing for the cool, marine air to keep the city pretty chilly. we will look for the brief

warmup today. then another system cools us back. as for the state, it's been another warm day today. you didn't feel the influence much of the low clouds and fog. back to the 90s for sacramento. 94 chico with 77 los angeles. so the temperatures will be cooler here from half moon bay. 60 pacifica, 58. and stinson should get sunshine at 65. 77 palo alto. 73 in oakland. so modest warmup for most of you. mid-and upper 80s pour east bay valleys. if you are headed over to oakland this afternoon, bring the sun block. the hat. it should be a nice afternoon with temperatures in the low 70s. we will look for the warmup to get this started by tuesday. but in between now and then, here comes a cool down with a healthy marine layer tomorrow. and we should be about 5 or 10 degrees above average in those areas. and the coast stays with limited

he takes tommy malone deep for the three-run homer. they come back late, scoring six times in the seventh and this shot to right goes over his head. goes for a triple and brings home two. in the eighth, cespedes comes through with two on. this time for a three hitch run blast. cespedes3 for 5 with 5 rbis. oakland wins 11-3. they are ahead 3 1/2 in the west. in st. louis a wet and wild day for the offense. the rookie hit a solo shot off of petit. his first major league hit. the crowd brings him out for a curtain call. a few minutes later the game was stopped with rain. a 47 minute delay did not bother seem to bother the pitcher, who struck out seven over six shutout innings. more rain caused another delay. and the giants went down quietly in the ninth. closer trevor rosenthal struck out the side. st. louis wins 2-0.

giants struck out 13 times. >> at the ncaa regionals. stan ford lost to the host, indiana. he homers off john. 4-2 was the final. this is a double elimination tournament so stanford will play youngstown state later today. the spurs had a chance to close out oklahoma city last night and earn a rematch with miami in the nba finals. a bad ankle kept tony parker on the bench most of the contest. the spurs got it started with a bang. and down in the fourth, kevin durant puts his team on top with 35 seconds left. but they regain the lead and ginobili hits the three. he could barely watch as russell westbrook made two free throws. they would go to overtime. in o.t., duncan gets the bounce. puts the spurs up by three.
