inside. so, why does this keep happening? and candidate clooney? after the actor's upcoming wedding, will he make a move into politics? why there's talk this morning of a major career change. hey, good morning, everybody. army sergeant bowe bergdahl is now safely out of afghanistan after five long years as a prisoner of the taliban. just hours ago, he landed at a u.s. military base in germany, where he'll receive medical care. >> it's unclear when he'll reunite with his parents, who appeared with the president in the rose garden, just hours after learning that at long last their son is finally free. meanwhile, thousands of miles away in bergdahl's hometown in idaho, they're getting ready to welcome him back. with signs and yellow balloons.

all over town. of course, this is a town that never gave up hope that he'll come back. >> social media abuzz over the release this morning. bowe bergdahl number one trending topic on twitter. with words like wow, hooray and welcome home. we have team coverage of what is a developing story this morning. we start with abc news chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz who's in washington. martha, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. this was a dramatic rescue, five years in the making, all carefully orchestrated with bergdahl's captors. this morning, speaking from afghanistan, defense secretary chuck hagel said that sergeant bowe bergdahl's health was deteriorating and his life might have been in jeopardy. >> my name is bowe bergdahl. >> reporter: the army sergeant was released by his taliban captors after five years in a prisoner swap. one american citizen for five afghan taliban being held at the guantanamo bay military prison

in cuba for over a decade. the president speaking about the end of bergdahl's captivity, alongside his parents, in the white house rose garden. >> he wasn't forgotten by his community in idaho, and he wasn't forgotten by his country. because the united states of america does not ever leave our men and women in uniform behind. >> reporter: bergdahl was picked up by u.s. special operation forces from his captors on saturday. not a single shot fired. the noise from the helicopter so loud he was handed a pen to scribble "sf"? for special forces. the soldiers yelling back, yes. adding, we have been looking for you for a long time. bergdahl then broke down in tears. recovered along the border with pakistan, defense sources tell abc news overnight, bergdahl was en route from bagram air force base in afghanistan to a military hospital in germany where he'll undergo evaluation and treatment. before being reunited with his family. according to the defense

department, then-private first class bergdahl was abducted in june 2009 after going missing from his post at a u.s. base in afghanistan. since his disappearance rumors have swirled about how he left the base. from walking off the job to being grabbed from a latrine. >> very unnerving to be a prisoner. >> reporter: the taliban quickly claimed credit for the abduction. and in early proof of life videos, bergdahl was shown answering questions and eating. insistent that he was treated well even doing pushups to show he was in good shape. >> as you can see i'm strong and physically fit. >> reporter: but it's been four long years since the last video was released, showing the toil of years in isolation had begun to take its toll. >> every day i want to go home. the pain in my heart to see my family again, doesn't get any smaller. get me -- release me.

please, i'm begging you, bring me home. >> reporter: and while everyone is happy that bergdahl is safe, the administration is already being criticized with congressman mike rogers saying, "i'm extremely troubled that the united states negotiated with terrorists. i believe this decision will threaten the lives of american soldiers for years to come." dan and bianna. >> this deal remains controversial. martha let me follow up here, secretary hagel, when he spoke to reporters just hours ago, he ducked a question on this. but is bergdahl likely to face some punishment if it's proven that he deserted here? >> well, i think they'll look at the circumstances of his disappearance and captivity. but i imagine, even if they say he deserted, they'll look at his mental health at the time that happened and certainly five years in captivity is a long time to be held no matter what happened. >> let me ask you quickly about this prisoner swap. what does history tell us about

releasing prisoners from get gitmo? do they generally return to their job of trying to fight us? >> well, they certainly have in the past, dan, not everyone, but there's certainly a record of recidivism, going back to terrorism, or going back to the taliban or going back to wherever they started out. they'll be carefully watched in qatar for a year. but after that, i imagine the united states will try to keep an eye on them as well. but that's part of the controversy this morning as well, dan. >> thank you, martha. bianna, over to you. >> dan, thanks. meantime, this morning, we're learning more about the detainee swap for bergdahl. five top taliban leaders at the prison. and abc's muhammad lila has more from islamabad, pakistan. muhammad? >> reporter: good morning. from here in pakistan. of course, this is where u.s. officials believe that sergeant bergdahl spent most of his captivity. his release came at a high price. five taliban leaders, all of them, battle-hardened commanders are now free.

the biggest name among them, a man by the name of mohammad fazl, a u.s. army report once declared him high risk. saying that if he was released he would quote, likely rejoin the taliban. another of the detainees, abdul haq wasiq, reportedly had direct access total taliban leader, omar. they're all facing a travel ban meaning they won't be allowed to leave that country and certainly not return to afghanistan for at least a year. already, president obama facing heavy criticism from republicans who accuse him of violating a long-standing u.s. policy to not negotiate with terrorists. and in this case, these are five men who once that travel ban is lifted could very easily go back to endangering more american lives. bianna. >> yet clearly this was a risk the president was willing to take.

muhammad, thank you. and as we mentioned earlier, the release of sergeant bergdahl has been an ongoing crusade for his parents since he was taken into the custody by the taliban five years ago. the couple holding regular rallies in hailey, idaho. and tying yellow ribbons. abc's neal karlinsky is in this town. good morning, neal. >> reporter: what a difference here in the last 24 hours, you can see the "bowe's free at last" signs. gone up alongside all the yellow ribbons. here in bowe bergdahl's hometown, they never gave up hope. in tiny hailey, idaho, at this coffee shop where bowe bergdahl used to work, friends marked every day of his five-year captivity were overwhelmed. >> it's a big thing to absorb. i'm thrilled. i'm thrilled. >> reporter: bergdahl's parents flown to washington for memorial day and were still there to stand alongside president obama and give thanks saturday. >> their son bowe is coming home. >> we just can't communicate the words this morning when we heard from the president. >> reporter: bob bergdahl's beard, just one piece of a

complicated strategy to reach his son's captors. teaching himself his language, their culture. even keeping his watch set to afghanistan time. in a video he released on youtube in 2011, he addressed the taliban directly. >> it's past time for bowe and the others to come home. >> reporter: bergdahl was hardly a household name during captivity. but in his tight-knit hometown, there were annual rallies to keep up the pressure. ♪ gave proof through the night >> reporter: the circumstances surrounding his capture, though, remain murky. he may have been off-base at the time. >> i'm scared. i'm scared i won't be able to go home. >> reporter: in videos released by his captors over the years, he appeared both in and out of uniform. eating. and pleading for his freedom. during this time, he was promoted by the military back home. by 2010, he was shown advocating for the release of taliban prisoners. >> release me, please. >> reporter: in hailey, idaho, where the yellow ribbons have

been up for five long years, friends say they never gave up hope that one day he would be free again. >> never. i had never felt that he had been forgotten. he couldn't be from any place better. this place is amazing. >> reporter: later today, we'll hear from bergdahl's parents they're expected to fly back home here to idaho to address reporters this afternoon. it's less certain when bowe will be back home, though when he comes back here, there's bound to be quite a celebration. dan and bianna. >> a big and hard-earned celebration. neal, thank you. while they're celebrating in idaho, as we mentioned, the same can't be said for some on capitol hill, where top republicans are vocally criticizing the prisoner swap. even accusing the president of breaking the law here. let's bring in the host of "this week," george stephanopoulos. george, good morning. >> good morning. >> back to ronald reagan, presidents in this country have said, we will not negotiate with terrorists. isn't that what president obama has done here? >> that's what republicans are

charging him, going back to ronald reagan. presidents have negotiated with the release of prisoners if that's what they felt was necessary at the time. a big question, one of the questions i'm going to put to ambassador rice this morning, the president's national security adviser, will this put other american troops at risk? the second question is, this question of whether or not the president broke the law by failing to notify congress 30 days before the transfer of these detainees from guantanamo what the president says, the advisers say, this moved so fast, they couldn't talk to congress. they also say the president, even when he signed this law, he had the constitutional authority not to live by it. he had the constitutional authority to go around congress and do what he needed to do to get detain ees back to their home country. >> why not just approach congress? >> i think they were afraid these details would leak. this has been a five-year operation to get sergeant bergdahl home. apparently, they didn't even

tell president karzai of afghanistan for fears it would leak as well. it all came together very quickly in the final days. you might ask -- could they have called the speaker of house, the senate leader, the republican leader, the democratic leader of the senate, perhaps. the white house said this was moving so fast. >> we're not done hearing from republicans. dick cheney saying president obama is the weakest president he has seen in his life time. harsh words. all right, george, thank you. george will have the very latest on this developing story later on this "this week." in the meantime, more on the top stories from ron claiborne. >> good morning, everyone. deadly airplane crash in massachusetts. a private gulfstream jet crashed and burned. burst into flames shortly after takeoff from bedford, mass. >> i'm sorry to report that there were no survivors. our thoughts and prayers go out to their families and their loves ones. four passengers and three crew members were on board the plane when it burst into flames. among the passengers, louis katz a co-owner of the philadelphia

inquir inquirer, the daily news and philly.com. and former owner of the new jersey nets and devils. identities of the other victims have not yet been disclosed. a witness heard a loud boom before seeing a huge fire ball 60 feet into the sky. officials say the group was traveling to atlantic city, new jersey. the ntsb is investigating the cause of that crash. the plane could hold 3,000 gallons of fuel, some of which may have leaked. they're on the scene of the crash to assess how much may have spilled. and a wild shooting rampage in norfolk, virginia, leaves three people dead. police say a 29-year-old man james brown, started firing out of his car while driving home. 17-year-old on his way home from a graduation party was killed. mark rodriguez. caught in the line of fire. a police officer responding to the shooting was shot dead. the gunman led police on a chase before he, too was fatally shot by police in a struggle with the officer for his gun.

and in washington state, the search resumes this morning for six missing climbers now feared dead on mt. rainier, in what could be one of the deadliest alpine accidents. on that iconic mountain south of seattle. officials say the climbers most likely plunged 3300 feet. during their expedition. the climbers have not yet been identified. and overseas, there's been arrest in that deadly shooting outside of a jewish museum in brussels, belgium. a man was arrested friday in the customs inspection of a train and bus station in the southern french city of marseille. the suspect was apparently carrying an automatic weapon similar to the one used in last month's attack. that killed three and left a fourth person clinically dead. no word yet if it's the same weapon. and now to scotland, where three spectators at a car race were killed when a driver lost control of his race car and it crashed into a crowd. earlier the same day, another

track, also in scotland, a driver in a race there went off the track. his car slamming into spectators, injuring five of those feel. investigators trying to figure out what went wrong. and some terrifying moments for some school kids in holyoke, massachusetts, watch as a dump truck plows into a school bus. this happened on friday. the bus was carrying dozens of students. nine students, the bus driver and the dump truck driver were treated at area hospitals for only minor injuries. and finally, caught on camera, a bear, you see it there, apparently out for a leisurely stroll. in wisconsin. this happened saturday morning. the person taking the video, he tries to whistle to get the bear's attention. sometimes it works. sometimes it doesn't. >> you know this from experience. >> it didn't work this time. the bear kept walking around the local fire station for some reason. wildlife officials eventually trapped the bear and got it off the street. tranquilized it. it is safe somewhere. >> maybe that bear is looking for the hammock that we saw yesterday. >> yeah, possibly. >> lounging.

thanks, ron. >> exactly. we'll look into it. >> thank you, ron. in the meantime, one of the most popular athletes in golf, phil mickelson, caught in the crosshairs of a federal insider trading investigation. along with a legendary investor and big-time vegas gambler. mickelson playing in a tournament this weekend, says he's done nothing wrong. >> this is quite a story. abc's rebecca jarvis is here with more. rebecca, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, dan and bianna. if phil mickelson was rattled at that tournament in ohio, he hit it very well. this morning, new details are emerging about the insider trading investigation. pro golfer phil mickelson, known for winning the masters three times, this morning in the spotlight for another reason. the fbi and s.e.c. confirmed to abc news, they are pursuing an insider trading probe involving mickelson. las vegas gambler, william "billy" walters and outspoken billionaire investor carl icahn. the investigation centers on trades made by mickelson and walters. a golf course owner and poker buddy of icahn.

a source says both men traded chlorox stock in late 2011. just as icahn was mounting an attempt to take over the company. now officials want to know if he shared information related to the failed bid with walters and whether walters passed along that information to mickelson. >> i have done absolutely nothing wrong. and that's why i've been fully cooperating with the fbi agents and i'm happy to do so in the future, too. >> reporter: icahn telling "the new york times" that to suggest he did anything wrong is, quote, irresponsible. billy walters had no comment. experts say determining exactly what information mickleson and walters were given is crucial. >> it's not a crime to trade stocks based on a tip you got from your buddy on the golf course. if you know somebody is giving you information is not supposed to be giving you and you trade on that, that's insider trading. >> reporter: past probes of high-profile investors have been infamously complicated.

in 2004, martha stewart served five months in a federal prison for obstruction of justice and conspiracy tied to an insider trading scandal. she later settled with the s.e.c. over civil charges. abc news has learned no arrests here are imminent and investigators are simply gathering evidence at this point. sources say investigators are keenly aware of the high burden of proof but they want the public to understand that they take these allegations of insider trading very seriously. obviously nobody wants to think that the game is rigged and this is important to that. >> why is it so important -- so hard to prove insider trading? >> you not only have to prove that there were conversations about the trades, but you have to prove that they knew, that they knowingly traded on inside information. >> and we know that carl icahn, as you know, is a very outspoken figure on wall street. not one to be shy from going on tv. so i'm sure we'll hear from him very soon in these days ahead. >> his tweets and rants. >> thank you, rebecca. always fascinating.

>> thanks, rebecca. it has happened again. one of those bounce houses so popular with kids going airborne. we have pictures out of denver here. there are two children inside of that thing, trapped and terrified. abc's michelle franzen is here with the very latest. michelle, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. it's usually the hit of the party, right, the bounce house, kids can't wait to climb into. according to nationwide children's hospital, though, the number of injuries the past 20 years from inflatable bouncers has skyrocketed. turning a day of fun into a frightful moment. another terrifying scene saturday involving a bounce house. as this inflatable slide went tumbling across a field at a littleton, colorado, park. [ screaming ] the slide was tossed about for 300 feet until it finally came to rest. officials say two 10-year-old children were trapped inside, as it tumbled across the field. >> we saw the wind kicking up and all of a sudden, the wind

took the jumpie slide with it and we were just horrified. >> reporter: the alarming incident, a grave reminder of the dangers poised by the inflatable attractions, popular at carnivals and children's parties. just last month in upstate new york, a bounce house went airborne and seriously injured two children. in 2011, this bounce house in arizona went airborne, twisting and tumbling, ultimately violently crashing into a pole. just months earlier, horrified onlookers watched as this inflatable slide tumbled across a long island soccer field, sending 13 people to the hospital. >> oh my god! >> reporter: in this latest case, a firefighter said both children were taken to a local hospital but their conditions are not known. meanwhile, officials say it's important to follow all setup and safety precautions when using a bounce house. >> we wish those children and their families a speedy recovery. michelle, thank you. just convinces me that jake is not going to be playing in a

she left for a friend. abc's marci gonzalez has more on the efforts to find her. >> reporter: police haven't told us what that message said, only that they now have plenty of reason to suspect foul play. a week of searching and this morning, there is still no sign of nichole burgess. >> people are very concerned. >> reporter: the pinup model and single mother was reported missing last weekend. police called to her home just outside of nashville, after a friend claimed the 37-year-old sent her some kind of disturbing text last friday, then couldn't be reached again. here in her house, police found her two dogs. friends say she never would have abandoned. and in the driveway, burgess' car, with her purse, still inside. >> there are a number of things about this particular matter with nicole burgess that greatly concerns the police department. >> reporter: police not releasing any other details

about their investigation. her boyfriend telling our abc affiliate she was supposed to drive to visit him the day she disappeared but never showed up. burgess' neighbors adding they did notice something unusual that night. >> they was in the car and backed up in the driveway, which nobody backs up in the driveway over here. >> reporter: friends say they don't know either. wondering if she left against her will, who would have taken her and why? >> i think that probably everybody has forplated their on ideas probably, hearing the story and hearing who maybe has last seen her. we're just hoping that she shows up. >> reporter: and investigators say that burgess' 10-year-old son was with his father at the time of her disappearance. police have not named anyone as a person of interest but tell us this morning, they are following several leads. >> really feeling for her son. marci, thank you. another look at the overnight headlines and for that as always, it's mr. ron claiborne. good morning, again.
