>> let's get right to abc's martha raddatz with the very latest on the growing anger over the circumstances of his release especially from his military unit. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this morning, bergdahl remains hospitalized in germany in stable condition suffering from malnutrition and receiving psychological counseling after five years with the taliban. but bergdahl's transition home could be especially challenging given the storm of controversy surrounding his release and his capture. bergdahl has yet to tell his own side of the storm, but this morning, stunning accusations from soldiers who served with bergdahl in afghanistan. >> i feel like he deserted us. he knew what he was doing when he deserted us. it was premeditated. it was thought out. he was not captured. he was not forcefully taken off the base. he left on his own accord.

>> reporter: bergdahl, an outdoorsman and skilled marksman, enlisted in the army while living in a small town in idaho. he was home-schooled, and he also loved ballet. in the beginning, fellow soldiers say he was thought of as a good soldier, although different. >> he was a little odd but not in an alarming way. he didn't have a cell phone. he didn't watch tv or watch movies. he just read a lot of books, and he studied several languages. >> reporter: but when he arrived in afghanistan in 2009, he quickly made it known he wasn't happy with america's role in the war. >> he was very upset with, like, the army's focus on how we were handling the war. >> reporter: it was within two months of his arrival in the war zone that fellow soldiers say he walked away from post looking for the taliban. his weapon and body armor left behind. but worse, they say, the subsequent search, costing at

least six american lives. but for those in his hometown and, of course, his parents, the father growing a beard as a show of support, there has been nothing but excitement over his release, but this morning, questions about a tweet that appeared to be from the father to a spokesman for the taliban days before bergdahl's release. the tweet was later deleted. but days later, the parents were in the rose garden with the president. >> the fact is, they are the parents of sergeant bergdahl. their son was held in captivity for five years. it was absolutely the right thing to do for the commander in chief, for this administration, to take action to secure his release. >> reporter: and just a short time ago, the chairman oe joint chiefs of staff, general martin dempsey, posted on his facebook page that "like any other american, bergdahl is innocent until proven guilty. the military won't look away from any misconduct," he said.

behind bars, accused of the unthinkable, stabbing their 12-year-old middle school classmate 19 times in the small, quiet town of waukesha, wisconsin. >> it's extremely disturbing as a parent and as a chief of police. >> reporter: the accused were in court yesterday, formally charged as adults with attempted first degree intentional homicide. abc is not releasing their names, as well as that of the victim. police say the victim is lucky to be alive. >> thankfully the victim survived. the wausha depa is deeply saddened that this 12-year-old girl had to suffer through this horrific crime. >> reporter: but the details of ted >> based on our investigation, it is believed that the suspects had planned to kill the victim >> reporter: authorities say the 12-year-old suspects were fascinated with a fictitious internet character known as the slender man. and planned attack believing he would reveal the himself. friday night, invited h a sleepover.

in by saying they were playing hide-and-seek. the girls told police, oe of them stabbed her repeatedly. the victim miraculously survived the brutal attack. she was able to crawl out of the woods to a road, where she was discovered by a passing bicyclist and rushed to the hospital for surgery. the accused were discovered on foot several hours later. >> once we located the two girl, it quick lyly became apparent that they were the suspects in this investigation. >> reporter: the victim is still in the hospital, but in stable condition. her attackers, girls she told police had been her best friends, in jail. police, with a warning for parents. >> i want to stress today that parents should not be allowing their children to have unrestricted or unmonitored internet usage. >> reporter: the two alleged assailants are in jail now. bail's been set at $500,000 each. and they're due back in court on june 10th. as for the victim, her doctors say she came within a millimeter of dying. her survival is a true miracle here. >> oh, that's just a shocking story. >> yeah. >> hard to digest. >> thank you, ryan. now, we're going to move to the shark attack which sent a young florida woman to the hospital, lucky to be alive. and a warning here. and some of the pictures you're about to see are tough to watch.

abc's john muller has the story. >> reporter: it's summer's worst nightmare. >> 911, what is your emergency? >> i have a shark bite. >> reporter: 22-year-old jessica vaughn was tubing with friends in ft. lauderdale sunday when she was attacked by what is believed to be a four-foot-long bull shark. >> start swimming out to the tube, and i get hit by something. at first it felt like it pumped my leg. >> reporter: jessica says the shark's tail then slapped her in the face. >> what did that feel like? >> a smack in the face. >> reporter: her friends springing into action but fearing for their lives, as well. >> i'm in the water. she's bit by a shark. and she's bleeding everywhere. there's nowhere for me to go. i'm right next to her. i could be next. >> reporter: a bystander called 911. >> did you guys tie off her leg? tie off her leg. >> reporter: after scooping her up into the boat, jessica was rushed to a nearby hospital, still in her bathing suit and sporting those unbelievable and undeniable bite marks on her leg. some of the images, too gruesome to show on television. >> she was very lucky.
