warning violent packs of people are attacking people at random. they are calling it wilding, a dangerous trend that made headlines more than 20 years ago. i'm dan ashley. these attacks happened over the past few days in san leandro on east 14th street and near the bay fair mall. abc7 news reporter alan wang is live at the mall with the story tonight. alan? >> dan, this has been taking place every weekend for the past month. the bay fair mall has been dealing with a lot of these problems, but it is starting to happen more often including an incident yesterday afternoon. >> yesterday i was driving down southbound on east 14th street and all of a sudden a gang of juveniles

were right in front of my car. >> he was witnessing a mop of teenagers surrounding this restaurant in san leandro. police caught two of them. >> one of the kids we arrested tried to take a car from the victim. he had a baby in the car. we arrested him with kid p thatting. >> for the past month san leandro police say mops of teens and young adults come into the city on bart from around the bay area and wreak havoc. a mob chased two teens from the bart to this mall where they beat and robbed them. >> he got pistol whipped. one of them had a gun and that's another issue we are dealing with. it is not just juveniles and young adults. >> police believe this video take inin downtown chicago last year -- in downtown chicago set off a trend. they used the social media to organize a flash mob that goes on a rampage. we have a city that calls for

service if you have to continue to watch the juveniles with their walking around it takes up all of our resources. now a group of cities are creating a task force to combat the problem. alan wang, abc7 news. we have new video of what lead up between an oakland student and a security guard. francisco martinez was attacked twice. this clip shows the first incident. it tipped him out of the wheelchair and then kicked him in the head. we showed this video to you last week. martinez admits he spit in the guard's face at some point, but the school and the police say that doesn't excuse mitchell's actions. he has been fired and charged with felony corporal injury to a child. martinez's family plans to file a lawsuit against the district. let's turn to the election

today. the hotly contested mayor's race has eight people running for the job. the front runners are supervisor dave cortezi and followed by the vice mayor madison nguyen. cortezi is the clear leader and 2% of the precincts reporting. it is early on yet. cortezi has union leaders cheering. lisa amin gulezian is live in san jose with the race to lead the bay area's largest city. lisa? 4*. >> residents turn to city hall for answers on the growing crime rate. they promise to improve public safety. >> i am phoning loyal supporters and asking them to vote. >> the campaigning seems to have paid off for mayoral candidates dave cortezi and

sam lacardo. both promised to improve public safety, but in different ways. >> we can keep our neighborhood safe not by spending more, but spending smarter. >> it offers better disability benefits and higher pay. he is backed by the public employee union. the county supervisor is confident he can work through problems and start hiring and retaining officers immediately. >> so the money is there to get back ip by 140. one of the reasons is economic. >> there are street ready officers in san jose. five years ago there were 1350. the councilman insists that the city doesn't have extra money. that's why he wants the police department to do more differently jie. there are things like utilizing technology and data analytics

that candy ploy our officers more effectively. >> he admits that he is worried the fiscally conservative path he lead the city on could end. >> he seems to have made a lot of promises to those who will be costly to deliver. >> they are running a close third at this point. abc7 news. >> in the race for santa clara county sheriff it looks like smith will win another term. she is well ahead of the captain kevin jensen. she has 60% of the vote. no runoff is necessary in the sheriff's race. now to the governor's race, governor brown is seeking an unprecedent fourth term. he has 55% of the vote with 36% of the precinct reporting. exit polling shows him in the runoff. that is certainly the expectation. his main republican rivals are tim donely of san bernadino county and the former treasury department official.

they will head to a runoff. the top two vote getters. in the south bay representative mike honda is facing a serious and well funded challenge from the fellow democrat. you have probably seen the ads on television. honda is well in the lead, but likely will face kana head to head in november because of the results there today as the returns come in in that race. now to the east bay one of the most expensive political races in california. the o ri nda vice mayor is running for state assembly in district 16. he is facing off against the mayor. we are looking at direct 16. katherine baker has 26% of the vote. glacier with 24% of the vote. our coverage continues on our

website, abc7news.com and you can find results for every county. >> six people in san jose have been forced from their homes because of a fire. video from the fire department shows smoke pouring out of the duplex near wilshire boulevard. it took firefighters 19 minutes to put out the flames. they made quick work. however it appears four cats did not make it out alive, but no people were injured. investigators say a san francisco man wanted in a nationwide manhunt had all of the components needed to make a dangerous explosive device. he has been charged with possession of an illegal explosive device. fbi agents say he took off in his car after they confronted him on saturday. when he blew through red lights they decided not to follow him. instead they went to his knob hill apartment. inside agents found components needed to wire together an improvised explosive device or an ied.

the items listed on the screen. the fbi believes if detonated that device could maim or kill. >> there were particular items found that caused us great concern and concern for the public safety and any event he decided to utilize those in such a fashion that it was growing to -- going to be a significant problem. >> he faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. chamberlain is expected in court tomorrow. >> if you take muni you are warned to brace for a third day of long waits and crowded transit vehicles tomorrow. agency officials are not sure if operators will continue a sickout that lead to mass cancellations of service since monday. they are asking riders to be prepared in case it happens again. only half of the 600 vehicles that make runs each day were in operation today. muni drivers are in contract negotiations and want more pay

our website, abc7news.com. a 6-year-old palestinian boy is taking his first steps tonight after several remarkable surgeries at lucille packard children's hospital to correct a severe birth defect. cornell bernard had a chance to meet this unforgettable young man. he's in the newsroom with more on the story. i envy you that. he seems like a terrific kid. >> he is walking and even dancing. not long ago he could only crawl or be carried by his parents. now he is taking his first steps toward a brand-new life. >> he is walking. a few months ago that was impossible for this palestinian boy from a refugee camp in the west bank. >> he has to basically relearn how to stand and relearn how to balance. >> he is working with physical therapists at the children's hospital at stanford where they performed several surgeries to correct his feet

facing the wrong way. >> it would hurt to look at him stand. he was never able to go to school. he was never able to play with friends in soccer. >> shoe shumann worked to bring him to the bay area and they took the case right away. >> when he stood before the surgery the foot was so deformed it was upside down. he stood on the top of his foot. there was no way to wear shoes. >> now he has plenty of shoes and made lots of thank you cards. >> thank you so much. >> his big personality is hard to miss. he is a huge 9er fan, and he is learning a little english, like his favorite restaurant. and check out these dance moves. his mom is beyond grateful for the care he received.

widespread. you contrast our weather with the severe weather that has been pounding nebraska is now moving in across the midwest. strongs thunderstorms across this area. we have severe thunderstorm watch boxes going that tomorrow morning. if you are traveling in that direction there could be delays. just be aware. look how many reports we had of flash flooding and funnel clouds and hail and tornadoes and hail is impressive. over 200 reports and nine tornado reports and they have seen flash flooding due to the heavy rain. very severe weather and that will continue into tomorrow morning. the exploratorium camera in the bay area, mild. we have the fog around. this is nothing out of the ordinary for us. temperatures in the 50s. 53 in san francisco and half moon bay 58. another live picture from the emeryville camera. temperatures in the 50s in the north bay and 51 in santa

rosa and concord and livermore. still mild there. east bay hills showing you the fog. warmer for most areas tomorrow and it will get hot inland this weekend. here is a pacific satellite picture. the trough has been holding our temperatures down and it is kicking out of here. the temperatures rise as the high pressure starts to build in. we will see 90s inland. watch out for the fog. upper 40s to the mid50s. and then tomorrow you will notice the fog pulling away from the bay. the temperatures will come up warmer in most areas, 90s inland. 60s near the coast where some fog will linger well into the afternoon. 66 in san francisco and 62 of a moon bay. 72 in oakland. up into the low 90s antioch, fairfield and 82 in san jose. the accu-weather seven-day
