good thursday morning, everyone. we begin with a story breaking overnight from southern california. the crash of a military jet into a residential neighborhood. >> the u.s. marine hairier jet went down in the extreme southeast corner of the state, in the desert town of imperial, 90 miles east of san diego, near the mexican border. >> dan haggerty, of our san diego affiliate was there. >> a fighter jet just crashed in this house right here. the pilot ejected. >> reporter: leo omeda flagged down our news van to show us his cell phone video. the shots you see here are only a few houses down from his front yard. >> watch out. get back. get back. get back. get back. >> reporter: you actually saw it falling and spinning to the ground? >> right. i saw it falling out of the sky, spinning out of control. and right when it exploded, we ran out there. >> reporter: a hairier jet.

authorities on scene told me, was headed from yuma to miramar, fell from the sky as the pilot ejected. >> get out of the way. >> reporter: it landed in a ball of flames that torched cars and homes, destroying three houses and evacuating an entire block. >> it's popping out. >> reporter: that popping is ammo. police told me one of the homeowners had weapons. and the heat from the jet fuel set off the bullets. we're learning, now, the jet's pilot had apparently noticed problems with his plane moments before he lost control. this neighborhood sits against the imperial county airport. and a worker there said off-camera, that the pilot was cleared to make an emergency landing just before he went down. and that's why he was flying over these homes. >> what about the guy that's supposed to be in there? >> reporter: the pilot didn't suffer any serious injuries. and should help military investigators figure out how and why this happened. >> our thanks to dan haggerty of kgtv. we'll have another update from the scene on "good morning

america." also happening right now, powerful storms moving through the plains and northeast. in parts of eastern colorado, they left damage and injuries in their wake. >> the national weather service said at least two tornadoes were spotted and several thunderstorms in the town of hugo. the storm spawned high winds and hail the size of baseballs. a nearly 1,300-square-mile area was under a tornado watch into the morning. the other major story we're following is that taliban video showing the release of bowe bergdahl. >> experts are poring over it for any possible clues. and there are new developments from idaho and capitol hill. here's abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: sergeant bowe bergdahl's idaho hometown has called off the huge welcome ceremony that was planned. they cite fears about security. the debate about the u.s. government's deal for bergdahl's release continues. five high-risk taliban detainees were set free in exchange for the p.o.w. on capitol hill last night, u.s. senators received a closed-door briefing. >> i believe the decision to release these prisoners put our country in jeopardy. >> these are all high-level

people. these are people that basically have the ability to go back and hit the ground running. we're concerned about that. >> reporter: this is the moment of this prisoner exchange, seen in this taliban video. bergdahl, clean-shaven and blinking. taliban fighters, high in the hills. a white flag, a sign for the americans. as u.s. helicopters approach, bergdahl is warned, don't come back again. you won't make it out alive next time. on the ground, bergdahl is met by special operation forces. a handshake and a pat-down to check him for weapons and explosives. the security precautions were extraordinary. as the man in the center does the pat-down, these men's arms stay straight. clearly, there's something concealed up their sleeves. >> they've obviously got some kind of weapons so if they need to shoot across each other, they're ready to go in case there's an ambush. >> reporter: defense secretary hagel reached out to bergdahl's parents to let them know, he's focused on their son's health, while the army investigates the circumstances surrounding his capture. john and linzie?

>> thanks so much. tahman bradley, there live in washington. and we've heard from another american being held by the taliban. caitlin coleman, seen here next to her canadian husband, joshua boyle. in this video released by coleman's family. coleman was pregnant when the couple disappeared almost two years ago in afghanistan. they were hiking in a region controlled by the taliban. >> we have not heard from them. we have not heard anything except for the videos. >> family say they're disappointed that their children and grandchildren were not freed as part of the same deal as bowe bergdahl. but they are still holding out hope for a deal based on humanitarian grounds. and a story we've been watching overnight from canada. there's an intense manhunt after three police officers were gunned down. authorities tweeted this photo of the suspect wearing camouflage and carrying two guns. they think he's still in the area where the attack took place. and residents are being warned to stay indoors and lock their

doors. gun violence is extremely rare in canada. russian president putin was uninvited from today's g-7 summit in belgium. but he was still very much a presence. the leaders of all seven nations issued a statement urging russia to recognize the results of ukraine's recent elections. in moscow, putin seemed to brush off being snubbed, and declared he was still open to dialogue on ukraine. that dialogue could happen tomorrow when president obama and president putin attend d-day anniversary ceremonies. and we first showed you this yesterday. now, the secret service is responding the concerns over this leaked video of president obama working out at a hotel in warsaw, poland. the spokesperson says other gymgoers were not asked to leave when the president came in to workout. they were not asked to refrain from taking photos, either. they say it's no different than when the president goes to a restaurant and other diners take pictures of him there. donald sterling is agreeing to sell the l.a. clippers. sterling's attorney says he made the agreement with the nba to resolve all their differences. the deal comes days after sterling filed a billion-dollar lawsuit against the league saying it was violating his rights by forcing him to sell.

the nba's owners still must approve the $2 billion sale of the clippers to former microsoft executive steve ballmer. the baseball world is mourning the loss of a true legend, don zimmer. his career spanned 66 years as a player, coach, manager, executive, as well. during that time, he was part of six world championships. as a coach of the yankees, zimmer was thrown to the ground by pedro martinez during a brawl with the red sox. this season, he was working with tampa bay as an adviser. he had been in a rehab center since having heart surgery back in april. don zimmer was 83 years old. all right. time, now, for a look at the weather across the nation. a narrow band of severe thunderstorms extends down from the great lakes into colorado and eastward, all the way out to the coast of the carolinas. showers will also stretch from new england into virginia. the rest of the nation will be clear. >> the western northern half of the country will be mild. temperatures in the 80s to the south. it will heat up to the 90s in the southwest. 108 degrees for phoenix. coming up, scientists say

better coverage. general motors is releasing much-anticipated findings today on the investigation of a delay of a massive recall. ceo mary barra is expected to explain why it took gm more than ten years to recall 2.6 million cars with faulty ignition switches. the company says the problem caused at least 13 deaths. but lawyers suing gm say at least 60 people died. and arby's has a hit on its hands with the smokehouse brisket sandwich. and that's not good for brisket lovers. the reason -- the fast food giant says it smokes the sandwich's meat for 13 hours. it's using more than 500,000 pounds of brisket every week. and that's pushing up prices significantly. some analysts fear a possible shortage of raw brisket, just as cattle herds are smaller than ever. a severe drought in south america is driving up coffee prices in grocery stores here at home. top-selling folger's and

severe storms that blasted through on tuesday night, including this car dealership in blair, nebraska. more than 4,500 vehicles were damaged, mostly from the tennis ball-sized hail. the dealership tallied up its losses at more than $162 million. ouch. but they say luckily no one was hurt. >> that's incredible. let's take a look at the morning road conditions. a band of rain showers will make from wet roads from the great lakes into wyoming and colorado. another band of storms will create flooding conditions from colorado all the way to the carolina coast. roads will also be wet in the northeast. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in philly, new york, boston, memphis and charlotte. now, the gold heist you're about to see seems straight out of the movies. police near seattle said the thieves managed to get $1 million worth of gold and jewelry without ever stepping foot into the store. >> they say the burglars lowered themselves to the roof of the adjoining store.

then, they cut away a portion of the wall and opened up the back of the safe. the owner was devastated. >> sure enough, it was completely wiped out. all of our inventory, stones, customer jobs, all of it. >> because the thieves never entered the store, there's no image of them from the security camera. and the motion alarm was never triggered. right out of a movie. a texas mom fighting back after her 10-year-old daughter suffered a sunburn on a school field trip. the san antonio school district doesn't allow students to bring sunscreen to school. officials say sunscreen is banned from campus because it's a toxic substance. but chrissy riggs is demanding a change in policy. she says skin cancer runs in her family. she wants her daughter protected. >> when you have several hundred kids on field day being burnt, you have to ask yourself, what do we want for our children? do we want them to be safe? or not? >> school says sunscreen is considered medication. and kids would need a doctor's note to have it at school. students at a washington,

d.c. high school got quite a surprise at their school's annual gay pride celebration. during yesterday's rally, wilson high school principal pete cahall took the mic, his hands shaking. he read a speech he didn't think he'd read out loud until that very moment. saying something he says he had waited 50 years to say. that he is gay. >> what i kept thinking is how can i be the principal of wilson and oversee a pride day and tell kids to be themselves and be who you are, and me not do that? it's hypocritical. >> students erupted into cheers. until that moment, cahall had told only a small circle of friends. not even his family knew. the west borough baptist church is now planning a protest of the school monday morning. students say they're preparing a counterprotest. now, some sports, starting with the belmont stakes favorite, california chrome. the triple crown hopeful will be wearing number 2 in saturday's race. ten other horses are entered, as

well. if california chrome wins, he will be horse racing's first triple crown winner in 36 years. by the way, secretariat also wore number 2 when he won the triple crown back in 1973. all right. and that's the logo right there for super bowl 50. you may notice there are no roman numerals. the nfl announced yesterday it is going with the number 50 instead of using the letter "l" on its own. the game will be played on february 20th, 2016 -- excuse me. february 2016. it will be at the 49ers new stadium. all right. the stakes don't get any higher these days in both the nhl and the nba. that's where our friends at espn come in. >> good morning, america. stan verrett and chris hassle. nba finals get going tonight. but last night, it was the stanley cup final, game one. and it was great. >> yeah. rangers and kings both played a lot of hockey to get there. and game one, they played a little bit beyond regulation, as

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. good thursday morning. we first have a check of the forecast. meteorologist mike nicco is here. >> good morning, tracking fog. especially along the coast. a mile and a half in half moon bay there is fog in san francisco. it is stretching to oakland. everyone else is okay. it will spread through the bay the next hour or two. from richmond and san rafael bridge to san mateo we could have fog. this afternoon, we will turnout like year. inland east bay is warmest. upper 80's to low 90. coast and san francisco, the mildest at 60 to 67. the rest of the bay is around 69 to 83.

here. this call came in at 1:20. a man was found unconscious on the brown and not breathing with visible injuries. the initial investigation was treated like a hit-and-run but now it is changing. homicide was called out. traffic investigation unit is not here. police are wassing -- police are canvassing the neighborhood. the area is blocked out. expecting to be here for several hours. in half moon bay friends and family of a young woman are demanding just first after she was shot and killed by a sheriff deputy. 18-year-old yanira serrano garcia went after a deputy with a knife on tuesday near her home. her brother read a statement at a vigil asking for an honest investigation into what happened. official say san
