>> california chrome has won the preakness. >> can this horse, with humble beginnings, do what hasn't been done since 1978? good morning, everybody. let's get straight to the breaking news this morning involving comedian tracy morgan. in critical condition right now after a crash on the new jersey turnpike. you're looking at a shot right here of the robert wood johnson university hospital in new brunswick, new jersey. this is where morgan was rushed right after the accident. >> and of course, this is the latest twist in a life of major ups and downs for this often hilarious, and sometimes controversial star. perhaps best known for his role on "saturday night live." abc's gio benitez is following the story. gio? >> reporter: as you said, morgan is in critical condition right now.

the accident happened on the new jersey turnpike, a stretch of road often considered one of the most dangerous roads in the northeast. and this morning, an official tells us, a truck may have caused the accident and rear-ended a limo. comedian, actor, author, tracy morgan was involved in a serious car accident overnight. traveling back from delaware, after the launch of his standup tour, turn up sunny, morgan was reportedly involved in a six-car pileup near cranbury, new jersey. just five hours ago, comedy central comedian ardie fuqua saying, quote, this is what it looks like from the stage to see a standing ovation from 1,500 people. then, we traveled back to nyc in style in a luxury mercedes sprinter. road life is a good life. #tracymorgan. preliminary information is comedian tracy morgan is one of those injured in the accident. he is in intensive care. the hospital tells us morgan is

listed in critical condition. 4 people were brought in from the crash site located just 50 miles south of new york city. this video shows a pileup involving a walmart tractor-trailer and several other vehicles. 45-year-old morgan started his career on the tv sitcom "martin" with martin lawrence back in 1992. >> i'm brian fellow. >> reporter: in 1996, morgan joined "saturday night live," where he was a regular until 2003. he played characters like brian fellow and astronaut jones. in 2011, morgan created a firestorm within the gay community, saying he would stab his son if he were gay. he later apologized, calling it a misunderstanding. the father of four recently ended his starring role on the show "30 rock" in 2013. his youngest child will be 1 next month. and we've also learned one of the other people involved in that accident died on the scene of that crash. morgan's publicist was not available immediately to comment on this story. but we're told, he could have head injuries.

a very serious situation here. >> you described this as a dangerous stretch of road. in fact, they call it the black dragon? >> reporter: yeah. it is straight. it is fast. and a lot of cops pull people over there all the time. we don't know if speed had anything to do with this but we're told, by police, that now, a truck was involved in this accident. and could have caused it. >> our thoughts and prayers with tracy and his family. a father of four. gio, thank you. >> thank you. we're going to turn to the violent weather blasting through parts of the country, with states from colorado to arkansas, getting rocked by some twisters and strong storms. julie durda from wlpg is tracking it all this morning. good morning, julie. >> that's right. good morning. and hello. good morning, america. we are dealing with severe storms from the rockies to the southeast, for the fifth day in a row. check out the severe weather we have reported over the last 24 hours. over 300 severe storm reports out of the 319 tornado reports. you have to see this video of what occurred over the last 24 hours. check it out.

>> get in the truck. >> reporter: overnight, severe storms tore through several states. from colorado to arkansas. tornadoes near trinidad, colorado, tearing through fields. uprooting trees. hail coming down so thick you can barely see. and in arkansas, large chunks of steel whipped at 105 miles per hour. and sheds lifted off their foundation. and in little rock, winds reaching 87 miles per hour, leaving a wake of damaged roofs and debris. the wind knocked out power for an estimated 47,000 residents in little rock. to the midwest, where heavy rains and winds soaked oklahoma to missouri. rains blinded the driver making his way through the flooded streets. roofs being ripped off of apartments. and power lines tore down. look here where the wind tore off the roof of this apartment complex, sending water rushing

down inside. >> it was like a waterfall coming down. >> reporter: the rain and the wind causing the roof to collapse. >> all of our furniture, our pictures, it's gone. >> and unfortunately, the severe weather threat again is right around the same area that had to deal with it yesterday, from the central portions of the united states, all the way east, and towards the mississippi valley. they would deal with strong winds, large hail and tornadoes. again, you want to keep yourself posted to your local abc station for more. dan? >> busy day. harrowing pictures. julie, thank you. this morning, police are investigating the home of a man with anti-government views who allegedly launched a full-frontal, heavily-armed assault on a courthouse in georgia. >> the video was frightening. and this morning, a deputy is being hailed as a hero for stopping the gunman before he carried out his twisted plot. abc's steve osunsami has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the police say this could have been a slaughter. that's the word they're using this morning. and they're crediting that deputy with saving many, many

lives. witnesses recording it on their cell phones couldn't believe it. listen for yourself. that's gunfire. a gunman in a silver suv, trying to drive through the front of the forsyth county courthouse north of atlanta. >> i heard pat, pat, pat. maybe three or four. >> reporter: look here. authorities say that orange smoke is smoke from grenades he dropped to stop police. they say the gunman was dennis marx, a self-described sovereign citizen who hated the government and was due in court friday to answer drugs and weapons charges. police say he shot deputy daniel rush who was working outside. and the deputy shot back, a decision that saved everyone in the busy courthouse. >> the officer that was shot as a fractured fibula and tibia in his right leg. good deputy. saved several lives. >> reporter: police say marx was carrying an assault rifle, tear gas, pepper spray, hand grenades, a bomb and flex ties he planned to use to restrain

people. they later found four explosive devices at his home. a whole team of deputies at the courthouse rushed to the scene of the shooting and opened fire. marx was killed in the gun fight. >> they shot windows out of the car. and the guy fell out on the ground. >> reporter: marx's hearing was over an arrest for marijuana possession with intention to distribute. last year, he filed a lawsuit against the sheriff's department, accusing deputies of illegal searches and using excessive force. the family of the injured deputy tells police they've received threats on social media from marx's supporters. police have dealt with marx before. saying he's a known problem. they continue to investigate his home. dan and bianna? >> steve, thanks. this is not the first time a so-called sovereign citizen has turned violent. the fbi has designated sovereigns as domestic terrorists. and as you know, i've covered this movement for many years. take a look. >> i'm a sovereign. i'm not a american citizen. >> reporter: they have disrupted courtrooms.

>> the unit has shots fired. >> reporter: led police on high-speed chases. and even engaged in murderous shoot-outs with police. as you can see in this video of a 16-year-old emerging from his father's van with a rifle and killing two officers. there are an estimated 300,000 sovereign citizens in america. it's a decentralized leaderless movement, loosely built around an ideology, often spread on the internet, which argues that people who declare themselves sovereign, don't have to follow the laws the rest of us do. so, many sovereigns believe they don't have to get driver's licenses, pay taxes or honor their debts. sovereigns have even attempted to take possession of foreclosed homes. as this 23-year-old rapper did in a neighborhood of boca raton, florida. that young man was linked to this figure, james mcbride, the founder of a mysterious group called divine province. he gives classes around the country and claims that his

power derives from this seal, which was a gift from former pope benedict. are you saying you have some sort of papal authority here in north america? >> in the globe. >> reporter: in the globe? >> that's right. >> reporter: so, you have primary control of the earth? >> correct. >> reporter: that seems like a lot of power. >> i understand. it is. and a lot of responsibility. >> interesting conversation there. we should say that most sovereigns, including that man, james mcbride, vocally disavow violence. but sometimes, sometimes, when their beliefs repeatedly over and over clash with the government, some of these people can lash out, as we saw at that courthouse. >> and it's frightening to think it could have been worse, if it were not for that police officer they're calling a hero this morning. we're going to turn to the serious deck collapse in the water at a popular tourist spot near myrtle beach, south carolina. vacationers eager to snap pictures of a rainbow found

themselves in the middle of a horror scene. and michelle franzen is here with the latest. good morning, michelle. >> reporter: the group has gathered on the sprawling deck, ready to mark the happy moment with a photo. when suddenly, the wooden structure gave way. more than a dozen people are recovering after a deck collapse at an ocean front inn in south carolina. >> it's horrific. wood and splinters and nails and a lot of blood. >> reporter: police say about 25 people were on the deck. about 12 to 15 feet off the ground, when it buckled like a trap door. >> the people on the bottom suffered the most serious injuries. >> reporter: that rescue effort, massive in scale. ten ambulances, six fire trucks, various police and a helicopter were called in. >> we have injures possibly broken ribs and difficulty breathing. all of the others had broken bones, contusions, sprains and that type of thing. >> reporter: witnesses say the group was trying to take a selfie, against this rainbow

that appeared after a thunderstorm right before the deck came crashing to the ground. >> i was standing there. and all of a sudden, the deck started to collapse. and i jumped quicker than some people did. >> reporter: officials say at least a dozen people were taken to a local hospital to be treated for what they describe as nonlife-threatening injuries. meanwhile, investigators will be checking out that deck, trying to determine the exact cause. >> big questions. michelle, thank you. this weekend, hillary clinton is making news with her exclusive interview with abc's diane sawyer, the first before clinton's new memoir, called "hard choices" comes out next week. in this clip we're about to show you, clinton talks about her health, after republican strategist karl rove asked whether she may have suffered brain damage as a result of a fall back in 2012. >> reporter: how is your health? >> it's very good, thank you. >> reporter: how serious was it? >> it was, you know, it was i think a serious concussion. >> reporter: the clot in addition. the clot had dislodged? >> well, that was the scary

point. >> reporter: you had trouble with vision. >> i had because of the force of the fall, i had some -- i had double-vision for a short period of time. and i had some dizziness. i felt fine. and i felt it was kind of silly that i was supposed to stay in bed. i ran into congressman paul ryan at the inauguration last year. and i had read he was this great athlete. and i said congressman, did you ever have a concussion? he said, yes. i had several. i think three in the last one was serious. but my mother was smart enough to make me stay in. what happens to athletes, soldiers, young people in car accidents, all the reasons why people get concussions, is they kind of shake it off. and i felt like, you know, i can get back up. i can go to work. and the doctor said, no. you're going to stay and rest because then you will have a complete recovery. fast forward, i go home for christmas. go to new york for christmas. and i want to go back to work. my doctor says, let's just do an mri to make sure that

new details this morning about aaron ybarra, the alleged gunman accused of opening fire inside seattle pacific university, killing one person. the 26-year-old faced a judge on friday after he admitted he wanted to kill as many people as possible. and then himself. instead, police say john meese, a student building monitor, pepper sprayed and tackled ybarra as he reloaded his gun. the terrifying moments captured in the 911 call to police. >> there are two people standing there. and this guy walked up behind one of them, lifted his rifle and shot. >> he's in here. >> okay, where? >> oh, god. please, hurry. >> one student was killed in that attack. another is in critical condition. ybarra is being held without bail and is now on suicide watch. overseas, in iraq, officials say gunmen have stormed the university in the anbar province, best of baghdad.

they are holding students hostage inside a dormitory. iraq security forces have launched an assault on those gunmen. it happened at anbar university, which is near the provincial capital of ramadi, which have been taken over by extremists and anti-government militants for months now, since back in december. and radio legend casey kasem is in critical condition this morning. this, as the family feud over his health care heats up. a washington state judge is putting kasem's daughter, not her stepmother, kasem's current wife, in charge of medical care. kasem's wife, jean, was allowed separate visitation to her ailing husband. separate because of the animosity between her and his children from a prior marriage. and surveillance video of a wild shoot-out in a texas store. this was back in march. it's just been released, this video. 20-year-old charles brown, armed with a gun, gets into a struggle with a clerk behind a counter, who reaches for his own rifle. a second worker then pulls out his gun and opens fire on brown.

the alleged holdup man, brown, fights back by throwing bottles of motor oil before he's shot by that worker, the second worker. then, as he lays on the floor, he begins spilling antifreeze and sets a fire. and realizes he set his own pants aflame. and police came to make the arrest. the store owner, that clerk behind the counter, he was killed in a separate incident this past week in a shoot-out in that same store. and the cia is joining social media in a rather mischievous fashion. the spy agency sent out its first tweet on friday, saying we can neither confirm nor deny this is our first tweet. quite a sense of humor, the cia. well-known for their sense of humor, of course. the cia twitter handle has 353,000 followers, they claim. the cia has joined facebook, they say. and finally, this guy is my hero. 89-year-old bernard jordan. he went missing from his nursing facility in england on friday. police were looking for him. it turns out he had gone to

normandy, france. he had sneaked out of the nursing home because they wouldn't let him go. he's a veteran of the royal navy in the war, world war ii. hopped on a ferry to attend the 70th anniversary of d-day celebrations. posing, as you can see there, with the ferry crew. jordan is reportedly back at the facility. no harm, no foul. and he says he plans to do it again next year. if they don't let him out, he'll sneak out. >> he hasn't lost a thing. >> 89 years old. and got the spirit. >> 89 years young. >> fight the power. ron, thank you. we have an unusual bear on the loose story this morning. it involves this little guy, gallivanting through a neighborhood in florida. it's pretty cute. but the baby bear was getting very close to a day-care center packed with baby humans. and abc's sara haines is here to tell us what happened next. good morning.

>> good morning. these animals can look beautiful and cute in their own homes. but when they get close to our homes, it gets a little scary. watch this. a small bear roaming free down a driveway in a florida community. scaling fences. climbing telephone poles. >> he came down espanola this morning. and the lady honked the horn. he jumped the fence. >> reporter: concerned neighbors looked on, as the bear inched closer and closer to a local day care. >> i hope they protect that day care over there. >> reporter: employees brought the children inside and called authorities, who deemed the bear not a threat. but it's not the first time we've seen bears come too close for comfort. remember this? a couple visiting relatives in california, locking a front door and just steps away, that bear staring them down. >> once i closed the door, i turn. it's a bear. it's a bear. >> reporter: last december, a florida woman had a close encounter with a family of bears after her pool became their playground. >> oh, my god.

the new hope this morning in an infamous missing child case. >> could authorities finally be zeroing in on what happened to madeleine mccann? the 3-year-old missing in portugal while on vacation with her parents seven years ago. and abc's alex marquardt has the latest from our london bureau on the search that was suddenly extended. alex, good morning to you. >> reporter: that's right. the search for clues in an area next to the hotel where madeleine mccann was taken, was supposed to end on friday. now has been extended by a week. this, as british media this morning is reporting that british police would like to speak with three people of interest. it is in this dense brush that this forensic team is hoping they will unearth new clues into madeleine mccann's disappearance. using sniffer dogs and radar equipment, investigators are searching above and below ground. here, an officer lowering himself into a drain to search an old sewer system. bags of potential evidence, being taken away for analysis. >> my sense is this is all just being thorough. they don't really know what they have.

it may or may not match. you're talking about a field that's probably been played in for years by other children. nothing may come of this. but it's extremely important to do it. >> reporter: the search site is about the size of three football fields. just 300 yards from where little madeleine's parents were having dinner at their hotel, when she disappeared from the upscale portuguese resort. that fateful night, now seven years ago, a man was seen carrying a little girl through this area. in a new facebook post, madeleine's parents, gerry and kate mccann, wrote, we're kept updated on the ongoing work in portugal. and are encouraged by the progress. thank you for continuing to stand by us and supporting our efforts to get madeleine home. just last month, the mccanns expressed frustration with the pace of the investigation and hope. >> we miss you, every day. since that very first day. we're waiting for you. we're never going to give up. and we'll do whatever we can to
