live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> good morning, i'm katie marzulo, so glad you're with us at 8:00 a.m. let's start with a look at the weather with lisa argen. >> good morning to you, you know the fog is pretty much pinned down to the coast, live doppler 7 hd shows the marine layer down the coast. throughout santa cruz. and we will look for some rapid clearing today already from our roof camera you can see some of the fog trying to evaporate. it's 57 in oakland, as well as san carlos, half moon bay at 54 degrees half-mile visibility. temperatures are cooler with the fog, in the north bay. but we'll be looking at warmer conditions for everyone today. here's emeryville, gray right now, but later today, numbers climbing to the 70s. in the east bay, the coast, mid 60s to near 70.

inland, we're into the 90s today. even a hotter tomorrow. katie? >> thank you, lisa. developing news, investigators believe a gas heater may be to blame for one-alarm fire that destroyed a home in union city this morning. the fire broke out around 4:20 at a home on eighth street. authorities say neighbor saw the home on fire and called police, one person was inside at the time. but he managed to get out safely. crews were able to knock down the fire within 20 minutes and there were no injuries. new this morning, firefighters are investigating the cause of a vegetation fire that burned 100 acres in the east bay. it started at solano and sasoon avenues in bay point after 12:30 and the fire quickly grew. crews were able to get the flames under control at 5:00 a.m., no word on what started the fire. but there were no injuries there. police in the east bay are putting together a task force, after several violent attacks by large groups of teenagers. it's called wilding and it isn't just one city's problem.

departments from all over the east bay are banding together to put a stop to it abc7 news reporter allen wong has more from san leandro. >> they have kids that just come in here, they jump over the gates all the time. >> what are they doing? >> arresting people. one guy was exposing himself. >> over the past month, san leandro police say a growing number of marauding teens have been using b.a.r.t. to travel up and down the 880 corridor, mostly on weekends for the purposes of doing nothing but terrorizing people and intimidating others and committing other acts of crime. >> police believe this trend called wilding was sparked by a youtube video where about 600 young people roamed the streets of chicago last year, committing crimes. >> we need strength in numbers in order to safely curb the problem. >> several people here have been assaulted and robbed. and now police agencies from oakland to fremont have created a task force. >> not just five or six police officers will show up, but 20 or

30 will. >> police say many of the wilding crimes are affecting the bay fair center mall and other downtown shopping areas and surrounding cities. >> you see a lot of people just leaving the area and shopping elsewhere. it's sad. >> the task force is still being formed. but police say a full task force will be ready to respond as early as next week. in san leandro, allen wong, abc7 news. police looking for a man of accused of assaulting a won in san mateo. this is surveillance video of the man police say attacked a woman thursday on east third avenue. the victim says the man grabbed her from behind and wrapped his arms around her in a bear hug type hold. she was able to break free and was not hurt. the suspect is described as an hispanic male, about 5'2", and 140 pounds. court documents have revealed the san francisco man at the center of an fbi manhunt, bought enough biotoxins to kill hundreds of people. 42-year-old ryan chamberlain was in court yesterday, where fbi

agents explained while they didn't find the biotoxins in his apartment when they raided it last saturday, they did find bomb-making components. agents explained how they believed chamberlain bought the poison online on the tor network, which allows people to hide their online act at this time. agents said chamberlain bought the biotoxins on a dark net site. federal agents say a large mexican drug cartel may have been supplying a meth lab busted yesterday in san jose. these tubs hold methamphetamine in its liquid form, later to be converted into crystal meth. sky 7 hd shows agents removing it from the house. two adults were detained, and officers say there were two kids in the home during the raid as well. they are now in protective custody. happening today, there will be a memorial service for a san leandro teenager who was killed by a train.

18-year-old britney silva was hit by an amtrak train as she was crossing the tracks near hess perria boulevard and spring lake drive on may 19th. witnesses say silva was wearing ear buds as she was walking and didn't hear people shouting warnings, today's memorial service gets under way at 10:00 at union city apostolic church in union city. an ultramodern new micro hotel may be coming to san francisco. it's not the hotel that's tiny, it's the rooms. abc7 news reporter sergio quinn tan quintanilla has the story. >> this has been boarded up since 2011 after a failed attempt by the former owner to turn it into a nightclub and hostile. according to the "san francisco chronicle," this company has purchased the grant and will work with the hotel, a london-based company to convert the 110-year-old tower into a futuristic microhotel. the hotel has one other property

like this in the country, in new york's times square. some people have likened the rooms to capsule hotels you might find in japan. i showed pictures of the yotell in york to frequent travelers at sfo to see what they think. >> this is what they're supposed to look like. >> wow. that's actually a very high-end capsule. >> japanese capsules are more smaller. >> the big selling point of japanese capsule hotels is how inexpensive they are. but the planned yotel rooms are not that small and they won't be so cheap. >> i think if it's economical it would be great for younger people traveling. i think it would be fun to stay in one. a new experience. and if it's the price it right, why not? >> the ultramodern property in new york has 170 square-foot rooms going for about $170 a night. and up. it's likely prices will be slightly less in san francisco. sergio quintana, abc7 news.

what's lunch with one of the world's retchest men worth? nearly $2.2 million. last year a man paid that amount to have lunch in new york city with warren buffett and several guests, part of a fundraiser. all of the money from the charity power lunch with buffett goes to help feed people, house the homeless and maintain programs to prevent violence. horse racing history could be made in new york later today. it's been 36 years since a horse won the triple crown, but california chrome, bred in the central valley, has a chance to become only the 12th horse to ever win the kentucky derby, the preakness stakes and the belmont stakes. here's lindsay zarniack with other sister network, espn. >> california chrome shines bright in the kentucky derby. >> california chrome keeps getting better. and better. >> california chrome has won the preakness! >> if he does it one more time, he'll become the best race horse we have seen in 36 years.

>> i'd be a happy man before i die. eye been to four before that haven't made it i think this one could do it. >> this is california chrome this morning going for his jog hours before he runs the biggest race of his life. the story is fit for hollywood. right down to its beginning, when two first-time breeders, steve coburn and harry martin bought an average filly for just $8,000 and came away with a nickname that stuck. >> when him and i bought the filly, love the chase, chrome's mother, we were walking away and somebody at the barn said, man, you guys are real dumb asses if you buy this filly and race her. >> they gave their company the name, dap racing for dumb ass partners. if california chrome wins today, the $8,000 investment will be worth millions. the odds aren't necessarily in its favor.

the last to win the triple crown was affirmed in 1978. 12 horses have fallen just short since, winning the first two legs of the triple crown. and failing to win the third. these two have already cashed in on endorsements, according to espn's darren ravell, the horse has signed an endorsement deal with the sneaker company, skechers, wearing the snag every day. tongue in cheek nod to the horse's need for the nasal strips. the glory would go to jockey victor espinoza, a man riding for a second chance at a triple crown. after falling just short on war emblem in 2002. >> when he's coming out of the gate i was like wow, that was it. my chances go away. >> now all that stands between espinoza, the so-called people's horse, and history, is one and a half miles at the belmont. >> that was espn's lindsay zarniack reporting. golden gate fields is hosting what it calls the biggest belmont stakes party in the bay

area. the track has 10 live races on its program today, as well as a wine festival from noon until 4:00. california chrome has a lot of ties to the bay area. the jockey who you were just learning about there, victor espinoza worked and trained at golden gate fields in albany. so did the trainer, art sherman. he was a jockey and trainer at golden gate fields for more than 40 years. the horse's owners are steve coburn and martin and both tapped their retirement accounts to invest in california chrome. >> these are not the shakeikhs, these are not the oil people, these are not the millionaires that own this horse, they still go back to their job. they turned down $6 million for 50% of the horse and turned down over 2 million for the mare. they feel this is their dream and they're just enjoying the ride. >> and what a ride it has been. post time is at 3:52 this afternoon and we can let you know immediately the outcome of the race. just download the abc7 news app

covering cupertino, concord, wine country and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> developing news right now, after comedian tracy morgan is in critical condition at a new jersey hospital this morning following a six-vehicle accident. authorities say the "30 rock" star was riding in a limousine bus when the accident happened on the new jersey turnpike. in addition to the bus, the wreck involved two tractor-trailers and an suv. one person was killed, we understand four others are in the hospital with injuries. and happening right now, we want to take you live to this event, where hundreds of people have gathered to say their final good-byes to the late maya angelou. can you hear now a performance, they're singing and live music there. this is at wake forest university in north carolina.

the university is where angelou served as an american studies professor for more than 30 years. former president bill clinton has already given an address at this vechblt first lady michelle obama and oprah winfrey are there as well. we understand oprah will be speaking after this musical performance. angelou considered one of the 20th century's most famous african-american writers passed away on may 28 at the age of 86. a judge has ruled that the wife of ailing radio show personality, kasey kasem was in contempt of court for blocking his daughter from making medical decisions, the daughter was able to move the father to the hospital this week. he's in critical condition with an infection related to bed sores, he suffers from a debilitating form of dementia. >> we can fight it out late fer that's what she wants to do. i want to be there for my dad, i want to put everything aside, be around my father.

all of us, so he does happen to open his eyes and look up, his entire family is there. >> the judge also ruled that all members of kasem's family can visit him, just not at the same time, due to the animosity between his wife and his three children. new details, l.a. clippers owner, donald sterling, still has not signed off on the official sale of his team. that in the hopes the nba will rescind his lifetime ban and $2 million fine. according to reports, former microsoft ceo, steve volmer continues to wait for the official sign-off from sterling. sterling's wife negotiated the sale last week. sterling recently dropped his lawsuit against the nba for forcing him to sell his team. new details this morning, a chief neurosurgeon says giants fan brian stowe will need around-the-clock assistance for the rest of his life as a result of injuries he suffered when he was beaten outside of dodgers stadium. the "los angeles times" reports dr. william catten gave the

testimony yesterday. catten says stowe requires constant rehabilitation despite life-saving medical procedures to stabilize his condition. two men have pleaded guilty to the 2011 assault on stowe. new concern about pot farms and the effect on california's water supply. a new study says medical marijuana pot farms are making the drought worse by draining streams. researchers found each plant uses about six gallons of water every day during the 150-day growing season. despite the concern, water officials say legal growers shouldn't face if he more cut backs than any other farmers. >> notices are not related to marijuana, they're completely content-neutral if you're a senior water right holder, if you're not using the water for waste, committing waste around reasonable use, you'll have your water ride intact. >> but in lake county, officials say water ways are being contaminated by pot farms and the run-off is getting into the water supply.

earlier this week, voters there approved a ban on all outdoor groves, including those for medical marijuana. you may have seen goats grazing on the fields and hillsides of the bay area. they're eating dry grass and helping reduce fire danger. now we're getting our first look at a new study on just how effective these furry little firefighters are. abc7 news reporter laura anthony has details. >> imagine having a job where your only responsibility is to eat. all day, every day. >> it's like family. >> this is the nanny of sorts for goats for the thousands roaming the east bay in search of a good meal. happy, you think? >> absolutely. as long as they're eating, they are happy. they have fresh water, and they're good. >> here in concord, this herd is in a valuable weed abatement and fire prevention resource, with the drought in full force in the warmest months of the year on the horizon.

get to a check of the forecast. it sure doesn't look so great out there right now. >> there would be improvements minute to minute. so yeah, it is pushing down to the surface, the marine layer, that means sunshine will be quickly to follow. in parts of the east bay and up in the north bay, where it is still rather gray. live doppler 7 hd, here's the fog, it will be along the coast from the north bay down through santa cruz, it's going to pull away just enough that we'll get sunshine in most locations. but not everywhere. but tomorrow, that's a different story. that's why you're tung in. east bay hills camera now looking at the deck of low clouds and fog. but it is sunny over into the east bay. we're looking at still gray conditions, san francisco, 53. 57 in oakland, san carlos, 57. with 51 in morgan hill. half moon bay, visibility is reduced, with some dense fog. sunny skies in san jose, 54 novato. and still, pretty gray in santa

rosa. concord and livermore, upper 50s, sunny conditions there. a little breezy out by the delta. here's the exploratorium camera, we have the gray conditions, but not for long. summer spread today, keeping the fog at the coast. and then you're going to have to be right at the coast tomorrow to get any relief at all. because it is going to be a very warm day. we're not going to lose the onshore flow. so we're looking at the typical summer spread, although temperatures will be well above average. hot days inland for the next several days. but as we warm up today, peak heat arrives tomorrow. here's the dense fog in the north bay, santa rosa, as well as half moon bay. and it is much better visibility elsewhere. no delays at sfo, it's clearing there. here's a look at today's temperature in livermore, at 93. and the week ahead, with 102 tomorrow, almost as hot on monday. and then by tuesday, you're into the mid 90s. it's going to take until the middle of next week. until things really get a little bit more comfortable. in the south bay, 83 today,

santa clara, look for 82, sunnyvale, 71 santa cruz and on the peninsula, here's your fog, half moon bay, pacifica, 77, san mateo. 81 in palo alto and mountain view, san francisco, 70. daley city cool with cloudy conditions. 63 for you. we'll get some sun in sausalito. a nice day there, 72. 61 at stinson. with 85 in sonoma. mid and upper 70s, near east bay. getting warm towards fremont, 80. 79 in castro valley. look at the reds and oranges coming into play in the valleys here. with 91 in pittsburgh. 93 antioch, livermore, pleasanton, 90. the seven day forecast, we're not stopping there, much warmer tomorrow, as much as 10 degrees warmer around the bay. look at inland, 102 is what we keep seeing, antioch. monday, just slightly cooler inland. maybe not much change at all there. but the cooling is around the bay and the coast. gets back under the heavy blanket of fog throughout the rest of the week.

we're getting a unique glimpse into the life of a polar bear. thanks to technology. take a look. this is the first point of view video from a polar bear. temporary camera collars were attached to four female polar bears, giving researchers a chance to see the arctic through their eyes, you can watch them interacting with other animals, eating and swimming. the research is led by the usgs and uc santa cruz doctoral students. they hope to learn more about the effects of declining sea ice. up next, how president obama hopes to help new college graduates with heavy debt refinance their loans. also, a look at the new revelations about the government's telephone surveillance program and why a bay area judge called an emergency hearing.

it's 8:30, we're starting with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you, look at the dense fog, we have in emeryville this is really being pushed close to the surface, and we'll be looking at sunny skies in the next hour or so. with a warm-up under way. 59 in livermore and concord and here is a look at what we can expect for the rest of the day. the onshore flow stays with us, but it's a quick burn-off with the fog right at the shoreline today. allowing for a pretty wide range of temperatures. so we'll keep the 60s here with the gray skies. mid 90s inland with upper 70s around the bay. 84 in san jose and hot temperatures tomorrow. katie? >> lisa, thank you. new this morning, president obama is using the college commencement season to get behind legislation that would let college graduates refinance their loans. in his weekly radio and internet address, the president notes the program would be paid for by

closing test loophole force millionaires. he says the choice facing lawmakers is to protect young people from crushing debt or protect tax breaks for millionaires. >> the good news is senate democrats are working on a bill that would help more young people save money. just like you can refinance your mortgage at a lower interest rate this bill would let you refinance your student loans. and we'd pay for it by closing loopholes that allow some millionaires to pay a lower tax rate than the middle class. >> the senate is expected to debate the legislation next week. it faces significant obstacles. vice president joe biden is in ukraine this morning, where he plans to meet with the country's leaders. we have video this morning of vice president biden attending this morning's inauguration of ukraine's new president. his visit to the country comes at a chaotic moment for ukraine. hope that the election would resolve the conflict between the government and pro russian separatists is been tempered by deadly clashes between the two sides in recent weeks.

a judge has ordered an emergency hearing over the government's spy program. it comes one year and a day after edward snowden's first public disclosures on nsa spying. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom has details on yesterday's hearing. >> long before there was edward snowden, there was mark klein, the phone company worker who found out the equipment he was installing was for government spying. >> i didn't sign up to work for the nsa. and the way i thought of it, i was wiring up a big spying machine. >> the electronic frontier foundation used his documents to sue the government, claiming they were spying on americans and violating the constitution. seven years later, that case is still in court, no verdict in sight. >> we know that the government is doing massive domestic spying, spying that affects millions of americans. and we ought to be able to decide whether that's legal or not. >> but instead, attorney cindy cohen found herself in an emergency hearing, asking a federal judge to keep the government from deleting

evidence. klein revealed a secret room at the at&t switching center where the nsa was copying internet traffic and the eff is suing on behalf of a novelist who believes her communications were among the millions collected. now those communications could be automatically erased and the feds say stopping the systematic deletions could mess up their computers and harm national security. >> i don't mean to belittle the national security implications. but i believe the government tends to overplay that card and the american people are getting a little tired of it. >> about the judge sided with the feds and denied the request. >> the courts all along have been -- cowardly, i would say. or the best you could say, conservative and wary of getting involved. >> sitting in the back of the courtroom, mark klein had to bite his tongue as the justice department refused to acknowledge that the data even existed. >> i was tempted to say look at the nsa documents. look at the at&t documents. it's all been revealed already

and everybody knows about it. so why are they pretending? >> so for now, the nsa can keep systematically deleting to its heart's content. now it was just a year ago that we first heard about a program called prism. this nsa document shows that program, which records not only your phone records, but also your chat messages, your emails, even the recording of a voicemail message that you may have left for someone. in oakland, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. police say the accused seattle pacific university shooter admitted he wanted to kill as many people as possible. and then take his own life. yesterday, a judge found probable cause to hold aaron ibara without bail for thursday's shooting that killed a student and wounded three others. senior john nooes is being credited for stopping the assault when he pepper sprayed and tackled the suspect as he reloaded his shotgun. >> i saw john come out, he was shocked. he had this puzzled face. he was, his arms were shaking and he had like this stut anywhere his voice. i had never seen him like that

before. >> the student who died has been identified as 19-year-old paul lee. meanwhile, the attorney for the suspect says his client has had mental health problems for years. architects are showing off their design for the new sandy hook elementary school. the new facility is being built where the old school in newtown, connecticut, once stood. that's where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults, the designers say the new design has the appearance of embracing the students as they enter. the school will feature upgraded security from state-of-the-art surveillance to secure doors, but not by overwhelming students. >> we want to make sure that the new parents coming here will feel welcome. they won't see that, that the security has been designed any different than any other school. but that they know that they'll feel safe in this environment. >> construction will begin this year, the $50 million project should be finished and ready for students in fall of 2015. merchants in oakland's

fruitvale district are intensifying their protests against new rapid bus lanes. the route would go from downtown oakland, along lake merit, into san leandro on international boulevard. business owners along international oppose the rapid bus lanes, saying they'll lose as many as 150 parking spots on the streets. >> what we're supposed to do? move to another place? close it? sell it? >> from fruitvale to san leandro, as a matter of fact, we're gaining parking spaces. you see the red zone? those are going to be parking spaces. >> oakland is getting $190 million in federal funds to create 9.2 miles of rapid bus lane. the merchants say they'd rather see money invested in more security along international boulevard. happening today, two birds that were injured last month when trees were trimmed outside a downtown oakland post office are set to be released. five young black-crowned herons have been under the care of a

bird rescue since a contractor trimmed the trees on may 3rd. two of the birds will be released, along with a group of other orphaned herons at an event at martin luther king jr. regional shoreline park. which is on edgewater drive, happening at 1:00 this afternoon. the three remaining herons are still too young to be released. the contractor is facing federal charges in the incident, because the herons are protected by the migratory bird treaty act. still to come on the abc7 news saturday morning news -- the man behind the hidel cash. identified, what we now know about the peninsula millionaire. and taking a live look outside at 8:37, the view of the golden gate bridge. no traffic to speak of, but plenty of low clouds in the sky. lisa argen will have your forecast in a few minutes.

video, is the guy behind the free cash giveaways that started in san francisco and spread to san jose, and l.a. >> he seems to find a lot of pleasure in this idea of people, communities coming together over this. >> buzi is no stranger to self-promotion but said in the interview, this was attention he didn't want. telling the bold italic, he would have preferred to keep his identity secret so he could keep planting wads of cash without anybody knowing who he was. >> he loves the fact that it's caught on. >> buzi says he made his millions flipping homes on the peninsula. primarily during the foreclosure wave that consumed large parts of the bay area. since then, he says he has spent most of his time volunteering, traveling to more than 70 countries, and working with children through various charitable organizations. >> we started talking to a manufacturing company. >> he's also invested in this start-up. here he's promoting a smartphone case with a built-in cigarette lighter. we wanted to speak with buzi about his cash giveaway and his reasons for doing it we went to

heat but that's where it's going to stay. we still will be comfortable, still warmer around the bay. and the onshore low keeping the coast cool through the weekend or mild we should say. so here is high pressure, it is building in, it's strengthening, our onshore flow. will be weakening and that results in warmer weather for everyone. you'll notice across much of the state, it is very warm, with 98 in sacramento this afternoon. 101 in fresno, and despite the chance of an isolated thunderstorm in the mountains, 81 for tahoe. 95 southern sierra, with 73 in los angeles. and the fog should get wiped away from marin county. but staying on san mateo county. here's a look at san jose, where temperatures today will be getting warmer, in the low to mid 80s, but tomorrow, look at that, 93, still quite warm on monday. but then by tuesday, we're in the mid 80s, and the coolest day should be next thursday. with numbers in the 70s. so if you're headed to san
