and cooler at half moon bay. now our highs for today. it will be a scorcher essentially inland with testimonies -- temperatures topping 100 degrees. and 80s for the north bay as well. i'll have the full forecast coming up. katie. >> thank you, leyla. with the high temperatures firefighters are urging caution this weekend of a a lawn mow are sparked a fire in the east bay. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has details from berkeley. mostly smoke. you see flames and the flames came up in minutes. >> it started moments after a landscaper fired up his lawnmower to clear some very tall, very high grass. it was very dry. >> that's what was crazy. 95 degrees in the middle of day mowing two foot high grass.

cancelled yesterday afternoon for people in hayward who live near a metal recycling center. a fire started in a pile of discarded appliances at simms metal management on industrial parkway. we show the flames putting out a lot of dark smoke. developing news at berkeley where two people are recovering from injuries after being shot. it happened at the laquinta inn at 8th and university avenue last night. some sort of party was taking place at the hotel at the time. two teenagers were shot. their injuries are not considered life-threatening. police say the suspect vehicle described as a white sedan was seen leaving the area. more developing news in oakland. police are investigating a triple shooting that left one person dead that happened around 10:30 last night in the area of 82nd avenue and eighth street. a teenage girl believed to be 15 years old died at the scene. she has not been identified. two men were also shot. they were taken to the hospital. their conditions are not no one.

no word yet on any suspects or arrests. a scare at the hayward bart station after two groups of teenager fire shots at each other. it comes at police are cracking down on youth violence in the east bay. sergio quintana has details. >> reporter: it's not clear if the shootings were connected to any incidents over the past week but police say it involves a lot of young people that team to gather at a particular place and violence erupted. >> we were invited to ride along with one of the team leaders. >> we want to head it off at the beginning. we want to affect the arrests of the formal or informal leadership of the group when they commit crimes. >> in hayward police say shots were fired between two groups of teens when shots were fired at the bart station parking lot. there are no reports of any injuries, but police have recovered six bullet casings. this is the latest in the string

of incidents the last few weeks, including a kidnapping in san leandro and a large group of unruly teens last week at bayfield mall. >> it took a large contingent of officers to come by and get the group out of there. to escort them out and make sure that they didn't create any more crime or intimidate anybody. >> curtis wilson works at the mall. he said that wasn't the first time. >> sometimes they break, sometimes they steal, sometimes it's terrorizing other customers or the people. >> the lieutenant said the aim of the task force is to quickly mobilize lots of officers from different departments. they want to make arrests if necessary, but they are really hoping that the teens get the message that their behavior wouldn't be tolerated. abc7 news. police are still searching for an inmate who escaped from the san francisco county jail. yesterday morning a deputy was escorting 40-year-old timothy to

the jail's basement to take out the trash when the inmate ran out a door and escaped. he is serving a sentence on drug charges and is scheduled to be released july 24th. actor and comedian tracy morgan remains in intensive care and the driver who slammed into his bus has been charged with death by auto. the driving of an 18-wheeler was dosing off and didn't notice traffic ahead of him was stopping. he rear-ended his limo bus causing it to overturn. morgan ace comedy writer, james mcnare, died at the scene. morgan was in the bus when it overturned. he was performing a stand-up performance in dover, delaware. he has started in "saturday night live" and" thirty rock." >> san bruno wants to know what is behind a state regulator he is decision to stop investigation inside of pg&e.

last week the public utilities commission shelved these strength test records. no reason was given but pg&e refused to produce information about the records. since the p.u.c. regulates the pg&e, it sounds like a back room deal was made. >> it is unacceptable. we are bitterly disappointed that the p.u.c. filed and then withdrew a motion that was intended to compel the release of those -- or the identification of those records. >> investigators say sloppy recordkeeping was a leading cause of the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. >> a prominent trainer called a cinderella story turned into a nightmare. the co-owner of california chrome is being called a sore loser this morning after his horse failed to win the triple crown. >> c. chrome on the outside. tonalist. tonalist. it won't be a triple crown this year! it's going to be close. it's going to be very close.

>> a memorial service was held yesterday for christopher martinez, the victim of last month's shooting in ilya vista. martinez was one of six people killed by elliott rogers in the rampage at uc santa barbara. happening today, don't be surprised if you see extra police around redwood city. there's an emergency response drill today from nine to two at roosevelt elementary school. it's just getting underway right now. some streets around the school are closed. today's drill will include a helicopter and some pyrotechnics. the police say the exercise is a response to recent school shootings across the nation. >> yesterday a federal judge ruled wisconsin's eight year ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional because it discriminates against same-sex couples. wisconsin's attorney general said she will appeal the

decision. >> this morning we have a story about a bay area woman who wanted to plan ahead for her own cremation and wound up locked in a contract she couldn't afford. it certainly added stress to an already emotional time of life. mike finney stepped up to help. >> joanne stewart is trying to recover from a painful operation. at the same time she's trying to plan for her death. >> because i wanted to surprise my children, one thing they didn't have to do for me. >> joanne doesn't want to burden her two daughters with funeral decisions and expenses so she arranged things herself. >> i believe it was over the internet. an e-mail solicitation asked if she was interested in cremation. she said yes.

a person from smart cremation came to her home and explain the services. >> they would give me a box, they would notify my children. >> joanne paid up front to avoid finance charges and she signed a blank contract letting the salesperson fill in the rest. that's when things went wrong. >> i kept getting bills. $300 more. >> the bill said the plan cost $1,652, not $1200. joanne called the salesperson right away. >> i said my deal with you was $1,200, and she said i'll be right there. she made an appointment. i dropped my own plans. she never showed up. >> she contacted company headquarters. a manager said the contract was for $1,652. joanne tried to get a copy but said she was ignored. >> i said i want my money back because how do i know that when i do die you don't hit my children with -- well, your mom can't have this because she still owes this much money. joanne asked 7 on your side for help. we contacted smart cremation and their parent company in texas.

they sent joanne a copy of her contract. turns out she was on a finance plan with monthly payments and interest due, but they said they wouldn't hold her to it. they said they will process the contract as written. when we determined the customer recalled the terms differently, we offered to honor the smart plan on the terms she recalled. or refund her money. we are disappointed we were not able to assist this customer but was able to have the opportunity to resolve as she wished. joanne received this refund for the full $1,200, which she gave to her >> it was so frustrating to go through this and not accomplish anything until i did get your help. >> this points out how important it is to never sign a blank contract. in fact, you should always get the terms in writing first, review it thoroughly, then sign it. our thanks to smart cremation for giving joanne a refund and

relieving so much of the stress. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. >> nasa is unveiling 12 projects being considered here are a few of the studies in phase one. a 730-mile long pool of liquid on saturns titan moon. capturing and despinning astroids. also testing how bacteria from earth can survive on mars without contaminating the planet. and using high energy light in space to generate oxygen. this morning nasa and astronomers around the world are tracking a huge astroid expected to pass by the earth today.

nicknamed the beast because of its size, it's expected to pass almost within 800,000 miles of the earth. three times farther away from the moon but still close for an astroid that big. the beast is estimated to be between 800 and 1300 feet wide moving at a speed of 31,000 miles an hour. but nasa said zero chance of impact. nothing to worry about, just something to think about, if you can process all those numbers. but you can be out and enjoy the weather. >> absolutely. everybody has quite a spread between the coastal areas and inland. let's look at what is happening right now. already making their way to santa cruz right now. a live picture of the beach. under some hazy conditions for the moment. we are going to be seeing a shallow marine layer that will stick with us along the coastline for most of the day today. but as we talk about what's happening in the radar satellite, live doppler 7hd. we don't have anything in the way of rain makers.

no major cloud cover expected except for just along the coast, that marine layer. quite a few things happening today. giants will take on the mets. we do have the first pitch at 1:05 under very sunny skies. high u.v. index as well. that means make sure to pack the sunscreen. we also have the san mateo county fair. temperatures will reach 730 degrees by 11 this morning and by 3:00 upper 80s. a comfortable 79 degrees by 7:00 this evening and a cool down once the one sets. the week ahead, a little more. we expect to see the high temperatures today. they will dip down to the 80s by this weekend and temperatures will ramp up later on friday into saturday and sunday, as well. in san jose, above average temperatures for the next couple of days and then we are going to see a low swing there. below average temperatures for thursday, friday. and temperatures coming back up for friday. here's what is happening. highs for today around the bay

area, sunshine. san jose 91 degrees. along the peninsula 90 degrees in redwood city. 71 degrees. we afternoon going to top out degrees. and as we head into san francisco 79 degrees downtown but 72 degrees in the sunset district as you are heading out to the sunday streets along the great highway, on the cooler side. make sure that you keep your skin nice and covered. 1:02 for cloverdale. a little bit cooler in berkeley and oakland. in the mid-80s. and the mid-to upper 80 in san leandro. 90 degrees castro valley. inland temperatures topping into the upper 90s to the low 100s. keep yourself well hydrated. highs around california going to be pretty hot for much of us. 102 in chico. 112 in palm springs. things will cool down overnight.

>> welcome back. this morning some federally protected birds injured when a bay area contractor accidentally trimmed a tree and hurt some birds. the herrons were hurt in the incident and were released yesterday at the martin luther king junior shoreline park in oakland. some will keep an eye on them. >> we do some monitoring with the birds because they get banded. the eagles and other birds get special plastic bands, as well so is the public can spot them easier. the sealed bands are hard to read. >> last month a tree trimmer accidentally cut down the birds' nest doing work at the post office. the tree trimming company is paying for the birds' medical care.

antibiotic resistant salmonella has developed and led to many people getting sick last year. they say there is evidence that links the it to the processing center in california. >> we think they have an obligation to show they are using antibiotics safely and they haven't done that. >> what you have to understand about salmonella, if you handle the chicken properly, if you cook it to 165 degrees, there's no risk of illness. that said, we are working to reduce salmonella. >> foster farms said it recently spent $75 million to reduce salmonella risk. the company said it put in place stricter screening processes for birds and made demands that its suppliers prove the livestock they supply is healthy. a bay area man completed a harrowing journey more than 3,000 miles away from home. he organized a swim off the coast of haiti to help lift the nation out of poverty.

and also save children's lives. christian sze has the story. >> reporter: the mood is upbeat as he gets set for the mile of a lifetime. a challenge. a five mile charity swim in the caribbean. a stanford graduate and silicon valley entrepreneur is the organizer. he gave us this video to use. >> we are raising money for a program to help children learn how to swim. >> although haiti is an island, dozens of local children drown each year. too poor to focus on water safety. jim and his friends are starting a swim on a tiny island and ending on the western coast an hour from the capitol from port-au-prince. they are ready for any hazard. >> we have rash guards and we have anti-jellyfish lotion. i had no problems at all. one woman had a little bit of jellyfish on her lips but kept on swimming. >> in a skype interview after the swim, jim tells me
