>> welcome back to amy. >> i spent a lot of this weekend in isolation, because, between the stanley cup and the world cup, my husband was nowhere to be seen. >> how about the nba finals? no love for the spurs? >> i caught up on "walking dead" and some other great staples. that's what i did this weekend. >> it's wonderful to have you back. >> thank you. but first, the raging wildfire threatening the homes near bakersfield, california. more than a thousand firefighters on the scene, and abc's clayton sandell is there for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you can see that they have the roads blocked to some of the neighborhoods threatened by flames. this fire is only 10% contained, so overnight, two helicopters were flying in the dark to take advantage of the cooler weather to knock this fire down. this morning, planes and choppers are keeping up an all-out aerial assault, on a wildfire chewing through at least 2,000 acres of parched brush since friday.

>> it spread so far over, you could just see the flames. >> reporter: threatening 1,000 homes. lori ashley watched as flames came racing over the ridge towards her house. she and the dogs are packed and ready to run. how terrifying is it to watch it come right over the ridge there? >> i don't like it one bit. >> reporter: in all, 500 homes are evacuated. just over there, you can see a sky crane helicopter, dropping thousands of gallons of water at once. they're trying to stop the fire on this ridge before it reaches the homes just below. nearly 1200 firefighters are battling the blaze, some posting instagram pictures from the scorching, hot front lines. shifting winds, high temperatures and dry conditions remain. firefighters say two structures have been destroyed, they haven't said whether those are homes.

george? >> okay, clayton, thanks. now to iraq under siege, another town fell on sunday. and the u.s. embassy is on high alert. and security is beefed up, and u.s. staffers evacuated after a string of bombings in baghdad this weekend. and martha raddatz is in baghdad with the latest. martha, all sides mobilized for battle there. >> reporter: they certainly are, george. those 100 u.s. marines have now arrived here in baghdad to guard the u.s. embassy. and we witnessed an incredible sight this morning. young iraqi men lining up to defend baghdad. they came by the thousands. young shia men from all around baghdad, some barely in their teens, volunteering to fight jihadists that have taken a swath of iraq. >> and we will win the war. >> reporter: a marching band was there for the send-off. there seems to be an incredible zeal among these young men, they seem absolutely fearless. but they really have no idea what they're getting into.

these graphic images of mass executions of american-trained iraqi soldiers were released by the jihadist group, isis, which stands for the islamic state of iraq and syria. the group is threatening to impose strict, islamic law, killing thousands who stand in the way. but iraqi forces have been striking back. helicopters launching powerful rockets at targets near the main road leading to baghdad. and here in baghdad, a string of explosions blasted the city, killing as many as 15. those attacks and the threat of a massive isis attack on baghdad has prompted the u.s. embassy to evacuate a significant number of employees and bring in close to 100 specially-trained marines and 50 additional security personnel rushed to the embassy in baghdad. the u.s. has also moved three warships into the persian gulf, with president obama considering air strikes. the obama administration is also considering talks with iran to help with political

reconciliation here in iraq. but top republicans say action is needed now. >> if baghdad falls, if the central government falls, a disaster awaits us of monumental proportions. >> reporter: the embassy here is still open, but clearly they are fearing the worst. george and robin. >> thanks. now to amy with the other top stories. good morning, everyone. and we begin with breaking news, a terror attack by another group linked to al-qaeda militants, attacking a small town in kenya overnight, killing dozens of people. they set buildings on fire and randomly sprayed bullets as residents there were watching the world cup. it is the same group behind the attack on an upscale mall just last year. and some new outrage for target shoppers. hundreds took to social media overnight, after some target stores were unable

to process payments at registers. you saw those long lines and delays, target saying the glitch had nothing to do with data security and it apologizes. well, newly released photos show two grieving fathers at the center of last month's deadly shooting spree at uc santa barbara meeting for the first time. the father of one of the victims and the father of the shooter embraced and vowed to end gun violence. and overnight, starbucks announcing a generous offer to its baristas, paying for online course courses at arizona state, open to the 130,000 u.s. workers. a pilot who flies a plane for sky divers had to make his first jump to save his own life. he was in the cockpit when the last of the sky divers jumped and in that jump, damaged the plane's tail. so without control of the plane, he had to bail, floating safely to the ground.

the plane crashed, but no one was injured. and if you were up late last night, maybe you saw it right here on abc, the san antonio spurs wrapping up the nba championship with a dominating performance against the miami heat. abc's ryan owens is in san antonio. >> the spurs are the 2014 nba champions! >> reporter: redemption for the san antonio spurs, beating the heat just a year after falling to lebron and company in miami. >> kawhi leonard, you are the 2014 mvp. >> reporter: tens of thousands of fans flooded the city overnight, the final score, 104-87. the win in game five brings a fifth world championship to the spurs. and turns this 22-year-old with an unusual name into a household name. kawhi leonard just became the third-youngest mvp in nba history. >> we just played harder than we did last year. >> reporter: winning on father's day is bittersweet for leonard,

i was surprised to see how many kids are using caffeine. >> it's amazing. 73% of kids, tea, coffee, and sodas, and increasing amounts of energy drinks. >> and this study shows that caffeine hits girls harder. >> it hits them differently. for both, it lowers the heart rate slightly and it raises the blood pressure. after puberty, the boys heart rate goes down and the girls, the blood pressure goes up. >> what do you recommend? >> kids are not small adults, i think you really want to limit this. especially since so much of the caffeine comes from sodas, and we know how bad that is for children and adults. >> okay, richard besser, thank you. all right, now to new trouble for jetblue. after two headline-grabbing incidents over the weekend. one passenger was retrained, the company had to apologize after a fright attendant refused to let a little girl use the plane's bathroom. abc's david kerley has that for us. >> reporter: what a scene. a passenger out of control

shortly after takeoff from new york to las vegas sunday morning. passengers shocked, because the man had been sleeping. and listen, it sounds like his daughter tries to stop him. >> dad! dad! >> just woke up out of nowhere and started flipping out. >> reporter: crawling over seats, spewing at flight attendants, even swinging at them. >> they subdued him very fast. and they had him tied down and pinned in the chair. >> reporter: subdued, but the captain decided to make an unscheduled stop in detroit. >> you don't know what's behind it, you don't know how much more effort they're going to put into it. that's one of the reasons to get them off that airplane now. >> reporter: this morning the passenger has been released from a hospital. an fik spokesman said that it's unclear whether the man will face charges.

this isn't the only headache for jetblue. over the weekend, the airline apologized to the mother of a 3-year-old. it was early last week, monday, that this mother of a 3-year-old was to fly to new york from boston. stuck on the tarmac for 30 minutes, the girl needed to go to the bathroom. >> the flight attendant snapped back at me, no, sit down. i sat down immediately. i was pretty shocked. >> reporter: jennifer said summer couldn't hold it, she got up to clean up, and snapped at her again. and the captain took her to the gate to remove the passenger. she didn't have to get off. an off-duty pilot was sitting a few seats away. they originally offered her $50 for the purchase of a ticket. but in its apology, it said it will give $5,000 to the charity of her choice. a way to say we're sorry. robin? >> it's the least they could do. >> yes, the very least. this is so sad, the news that we learned over the

but the .44 magnum immortalized by clint eastwood. upton was cut down in 2013, and he died instantly. and now, vilkin is on trial for first degree murder. he has been pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense. featured on "20/20" in the '90s, rescuing deformed orphans, he was a hero to so many, including his girlfriend who we interviewed days after the shooting. >> what could i say? >> reporter: he never did build in this neighborhood, he tended it lovingly. he called it obsessive. >> none was permitted. it was a landslide property. it wasn't safe for the neighbors. >> reporter: upton allegedly called him outen it.

he told jurors upton was a bully. they said he brought the handgun with blood, not bushes on his mind. zeller said he only went out that day to call a truce. >> the dream home. no, it's all good. it's all good. we're out of here. >> reporter: those were allegedly among upton's last words. for "good morning america," matt gutman, miami. >> let's talk about this with dan abrams. so, how does this case look? >> not a strong self-defense case. you have an eyewitness who contradicts the testimony of the defendant. no one backing up his account other than his own testimony. with that said, remember, the prosecution, even in a self-defense case in california, has the burden to prove, in effect, that it wasn't self-defense. key elements of self-defense, was it reasonable to believe that? and was it necessary to do what he did? and, you know, i think that that's a tough argument for him to make. the prosecutors have the burden. >> but it's why he had to take

the stand with that real vivid testimony. >> without his testimony, there was nothing to support his claim of self-defense. and still evidence on the other side to indicate that it wasn't. so i think it was absolutely crucial that he took the stand in this case. and that now means whether the jurors believed him becomes the key to the case. >> how does him being a humanitarian play into this? >> it doesn't right now. because, when we're talking about what happened at that moment, whether it was or wasn't self-defense, whether or not he was a humanitarian is not important. it could come up in sentencing. and now to a quick-thinking west virginia girl who used facebook to save her father's life when no phones were working. she pleaded for help in a message when a tree crashed down on them during a storm. abc's gio benitez is here. >> good morning. the 10-year-old girl and her

social network turned out to be her father's lifelong. quickly leading to the hour-long rescue after daddy's little girl posted this. >> my dad -- oh, he needs an ambulance, please. >> reporter: this morning a father is alive, all because of this little girl's frantic plea to help him. >> i'm scared. my dad needs help. i had to post that. >> reporter: 10-year-old brianna vance turning to facebook after a sever storm tore through on tuesday, her dad and two friends had been sitting on the front porch when a massive tree came down on top of them. the storm knocked out cell phone signals, and no land line, but brianna was able to get online and immediately posting that plea for help. >> the lightning crashed and hit a tree, and my dad's almost dead. he needs an ambulance, please.
