good friday morning to you. we begin this friday with growing pressure on iraq's leaders to unite the country. secretary of state john kerry is expected to deliver that message in person. >> and 300 u.s. military advisers will soon be on the ground in iraq hoping to help stem the rising tide of violence there. abc's tahman bradley has more from washington. >> reporter: u.s. aircraft are flying over iraq 24 hours a day collecting intelligence as iraqi soldiers battle militants. additional american help will begin arriving within days. president obama has dispatched 300 u.s. troops who will serve as military advisers. the president ruled out sending in combat troops but left the door open for possible air strikes. >> we will be prepared to take targeted and precise military action if and when we determine that the situation on the ground requires it. >> reporter: on capitol hill, many republicans are skeptical. senator john mccain wants air strikes immediately. >> the president of the united states goes for fund-raising and

who served in the obama administration tells abc news that isis is more formidable than al qaeda was at the time of the september 11th attacks. in february of this year, al qaeda formally severed its ties with the group. al qaeda claimed isis was damaging their brand. and this morning, a serious scare for dozens of scientists at the cdc. about 75 workers at the government labs in atlanta may have been accidentally exposed to anthrax. investigators say the risk of infection seems very low but the employees are being monitored and offered antibiotics. abc's dr. richard besser explains why the precautions are necessary. >> this is a very unusual organism. it can live in your body for 60 days and then it can infect you. that can be deadly. there's why 60 days of antibiotics plus a vaccine. >> a cdc spokesman tells dr. besser "we are devastated. it is unacceptable. we're going to find out what happened and we're going to fix it." there is no danger to the public.

this morning minnesota seems to be the land of 10,000 floods. the governor has declared a state of emergency in 35 counties after an historic rainfall. this has been the wettest year in the twin cities area in more than 140 years. more than 4 inches of rain fell there yesterday and flash flood warnings are in effect. the people of a small south dakota town are cleaning up after a tornado but thankful there were no injuries or fatalities. officials credit tornado alarms, which sounded just motors before the twister plowed through the heart of the town. residents scrambled for shelter and survived. nearly two dozen homes were destroyed and another 20 were damaged. in the forecast on this last day of spring, the upper midwest will see heavy rain. it'll be pleasant along the west coast and hot in the southwest and south. in seattle, the high today won't crack 70, but phoenix will be well over 100. the center of the country will be in the lower 90s, hotter in kansas city than in miami. a california lawmaker is the

second most powerful republican in the house of representatives. kevin mccarthy has been elected majority leader. he's replacing eric cantor who steps down at the end of july. after his victory mccarthy promised to help republicans advance their agenda for the country. well, one year after the supreme court struck down a key provision of the defense of marriage act, president obama is set to extend a wide range of benefits to day couples. most federal agencies will now treat married couples equally regardless of gender. among the new benefits recognition of gay couples by federal immigration and the irs. president obama has presented the nation's highest military award to a 24-year-old veteran who almost lost his life in afghanistan. marine corporal william kyle carpenter received the medal of honor for jumping on an exploding grenade to protect a fellow marine from the blast. carpenter, a mississippi native, was severely injured. he lost an eye and spent 2 1/2 years in the hospital.

and the world of music has lost one of its most prolific songwriters. gerry goffin collaborated on the most enduring hits including "the locomotion," "a natural woman and this carole king classic. ♪ but will you love me tomorrow ♪ >> that song, by the way, hit the charts when he was only 20. she was 17. carole king called goffin her first love whose words and creative influence will resonate for generations to come. gerry goffin was 75 years old. turning now to what most of the rest of the world is focused on right now, the world cup. >> we have some headlines to tell you about this morning. uruguay and colombia earn 2-1 victories yesterday. uruguay's victory over england has likely knocked that country out of the tournament completely. >> and team usa takes the field sunday night at 6:00 p.m. facing off against portugal. you can watch the action on our sister network espn.

welcome back. with gasoline prices at their highest level in six years, even motorcyclists may be looking to go green so harley-davidson is introducing the live wire. an electric motorcycle harley says the bike does 0 to 60 in just 4 seconds and roars like a jet fighter plane. it can go as far as 53 miles before needing to be recharged and is expected in harley showrooms within two years. apple's decision to add a kill switch to its iphone seems to be paying off. cell phone thefts over the past year have dropped dramatically thanks in part to the switch which can render a stolen phone useless. google and microsoft says they will add a kill switch to their new phones. apple, google and microsoft control 97% of the u.s. smartphone market. upscale retailer coach is planning to close 70 stores over the next year. the company known for its pricey leather bags recovered after the recession, but sales have since

you'd probably write it off as a staged stunt. but it's real. a motorcycle ran into a car making a left turn flipping the driver into the air. and look at that. he gets up and walks away unhurt. when he saw the videotape, even the motorcyclist couldn't believe it. your ride should be much smoother anywhere else in the west, south, atlantic coast and new england but watch out for flooding in the south to gulf coast. and if you're flying, airport delays possible in chicago, detroit, washington and charlotte. back to the news this morning. a suburban denver man is feared dead after his house exploded. >> that's right. officials are using a cadaver dog, which they say has picked up a scent. his roommates say his car and motorcycle are still parked nearby. it's not known what caused the

blast, which knocked neighbors off their feet and sent debris flying. meanwhile, a yacht near san diego has been reduced to ashes after going up in flames. the 110-foot pleasure boat was undergoing repairs at a shipyard when this fire broke out sending thick, black smoke into the air. 100 workers were evacuated but a drone mounted with a camera was able to get close enough to capture these amazing images. no one was seriously hurt. a high-tech new tool has been brought into the search for a firefighter missing in the southern california mountains. mike herdman vanished a week ago chasing after his dog during a backpacking trip. a homeland security team is now using drones hoping to pinpoint his exact location in the rugged terrain. >> one of the major things that these things are going to be used for i think in the public sector is search and rescue and this will definitely raise the bar. >> searchers are also using harmonicas to lure herdman's dog duke. the dog has been spotted twice but ran away each time.

now to a warning to anyone who has bought a lottery ticket and told it was a loser. four people including these two women have been arrested in florida as part of a sweeping investigation into nearly 100 retailers. investigators discovered that nine of the top ten winners of scrapoff games in the tampa bay area were convenience store owners like this man who talked to her matt gutman. >> reporter: you've won 38 times for about $50,000. >> in four years maybe. >> reporter: how much money have you put into it, do you think? >> maybe 60 or 70. >> the scams are not limited to florida. this clerk from syracuse, new york, was convicted of swindling a customer telling him he had a $5,000 ticket when it was really worth $5 million. if you have a winning ticket, using the scanning machines at the scores. don't simply give it to the clerk. we now know more about the crash that critically injured tracy morgan. investigators say the tractor trailer that hit the limousine was speeding more than 20 miles an hour over the speed limit in a construction zone.

the preliminary report also says the truck driver had been working more than 13 hours straight and hadn't slept in more than 24 hours. topping our health headlines this morning, a new warning that tanning could lead to a tanning addiction. a new study from harvard finds that chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation triggers the release of endorphins, those so-called fee-good hormones similar to highly addict iive opiate drugs such as heroin and morphine. critics are quick to point out that exercise also releases endorphins and that the sun is still the best source of vitamin d. donald sterling of the l.a. clippers has been caught on tape again in a voice mail to one of his psychiatrists who declared him mentally incapacitated. the recording was used in court yesterday as the dispute heats up over his estranged wife's pending $2 billion sale of their team. shelly sterling's lawyers asked the judge to order her husband to stop making harassing calls like this one. >> they hired you for the purpose of finding me incompetent. i'm not incompetent.
