one home burned to the ground and others badly damaged. >> a fire fueled by wind and dry conditions spread so quickly people barely had enough time to escape. >> good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama dates. it started at about 3:45 this afternoon as a road side fire that spread into a neighborhood destroying one home. that neighborhood is in cordelia along interstate 680, a short distance from interstate 80. >> this is what it looked like at 5:00 p.m. it shows the front porch of a home on fire and a handful of firefighters trying to put it out. by 6:00 you can see another structure destroyed by fire. as sky 7hd zooms out they had hoses blasting the flames. and then at 7:00 you can see the remanence of the first house we showed you. it is now gone two hours

later. all that remains is a pile of smoking, charred rubble and the field is blackened and burned, but the fire is out. the wind was a problem for firefighters. sandhya patel was tweeting live updates. the winds had gusts up to 25 miles per hour. it was descry -- dry with just 22% relative humidity. >> one thing that helped firefighters were these water drops. they were dropping in with buckets to douse the flames. they contained about 500 gallons. there were ponds nearby that provided plenty of water. >> they are on scene moping up the hotspots. >> that's where alan wang is live for us. the fire spread so quickly. the homeowners didn't have a lot of warning. >> they really didn't and they are finally putting things to rest. they ray cleaning up the fire trucks and they are trying to figure out how this all started.

the cordelia fire chief just corrected the report. this town was in fleams and chaos just a few hours ago. >> it is hard because we don't come from much. >> it was supposed to be the homer when they were supposed to start their life together. >> our official wedding is in four months so i grabbed my wedding dress which is expensive and our clothes and the dog and got out of there. it was within minutes. the house is gone. >> they lost everything but the wedding druse when a brushfire ignited along 680. the winds were blowing at more than 20 miles per hour and embers were flying across the highway into the fields of old town cordelia. with the wind and the flame. >> within minutes they were dealing with a five-alarm fire.

utility poles pulled down live power lines in the neighborhood and he thought his home and his dog was gone. >> the dog was shot and i was worried for the dog. i am happy to see the dog. >> all lanes of interstate 680 was shutdown for two hours during the friday rush hour. residents say fires along the highway are common, but they had never seen it spread this fast. in cordelia, alan wang, abc7 news. >> california fire officials warn that this is something you can expect to see all summer long. >> 2014 could turn out to be the worst fire season ever. >> to help fight fires cal fire has an extra $100 million in the budget and hired 300 extra firefighters. >> two people are in custody and rete now a third is on the run after a robbery in san francisco lead to a chase

through the city. it ended at 9th and mission when the suspect's vehicle slammed into three others. police believe they robbed people in a nail salon on octavia and union streets. the officers nabbed two suspects and the third got away. no one was hurt at the nail salon. three people had minor injuries after the crashes however. fire investigators in san francisco have been tracking an arsonist who is targeting construction sites in the south of market area. according to construction crews, at one highrise development one of the fires caused $30,000 in damage. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana is live at one rine con plaza where another was hit yesterday. >> so far a lot of the suspicious fires have been set in dumpsters or just inside the fences of some of the construction sites in this neighborhood yesterday's fire is alarming because someone managed to get inside the

parking structure and start a car on fire and then run off. crews quickly attacked the fire in the parking structure at 1r nie con -- 1rincon plaza. according to residents here an e-mail was sent out notifying tenants that this was the second fire set this week. >> after the first fire the fire department came in and couldn't find the source of the fire 6789 . they just saw smoke. they saw a guy running out of the parking garage and they are investigating the matter. >> he declined to tell us his name, but the building management may have pulled an image from surveillance cameras. other residents say the back to backfires are a concern. >> two days in a row is scary, that it happened two days in a row. >> know thrg were other incidents that lead up to these last two i'm sure that has a lot of people concerned. >> this is in the latest series of fires set at or near

construction sites in the booming south of market neighborhood a arson investigators with the san francisco police and fire departments are working together as a special joint task force. they want to catch who ever is setting the fires before anyone gets hurt. after yesterday's blaze, even getting out of the highrise is now a concern. >> it is scary. we are on a high level. to get out of the building fast is a scary moment for us. >> construction crews tell us they increased the security patrol and are adding video cameras. abc7 news. >> a man suspected of stabbing his former girlfriend and kidnapping their daughter last night is still on the run. sunnyvale public safety officials say this man is considered armed and dangerous. they say this happened last night at their home near wolf and fair oaks. police say he threatened to hurt himself and the girl. an amber alert was issued and the girl was returned three hours later. the woman has been released from the hospital, but again

he is still on the run. a company that owns a number of for profit colleges may have to shutdown. they claim a recent department of education decision to delay the school's access to federal student aid means it could run out of money. the government made the decision because they did not provide documents to regulators investigating claims the school falsified attendance records, grades and job placement data. they have 27,000 students in california. starting tomorrow drivers will no longer be allowed on on a popular tourist attraction. they will be closed for the next four weekends. the ban on cars will take place from noon until 6:00 p.m. on saturdays and sundays and on friday july 4th. the local traffic and taxis will be allowed and so will pedestrians. it is part of a pilot program put in place after homeowners complained about noise and traffic.

dedication to a son who sac care pal balance see is -- cerebral palsy is going viral. he had this special chair made so he can take his son jonah with him on hikes. the picture was taken in 2012 as part of a park contest. they reposted it on father's day and it took off from there. because jonah grew so slowly james was able to carry him in a backpack for carrying children until he was 17. but they needed something bigger. jonah's mom says with the wheel pack they are able to take jonah about anywhere. that pint-sized golfer from redwood city that stole america's heart will not play the weekend at the u.s. open. she didn't make the cut.

but it was a huge achievement. she learned a lot from the pros, but she taught a lot as well. >> she is the 11-year-old in red, white and blue this wing and swinging her -- this week, swinging her way into history. wearing her brace she's came with her swing, outfit and caddie. hands a on her hip and sending the message, she's got this. she was the youngest player to qualify for the u.s. open. even before her history making winning stroke what she said about competing. >> i just want to go out there and have fun and play the best i can, and i really don't care about the outcome. it is just i want to have fun. >> about dad who has been by her side? >> can your dad beat you? >> no. >> she played on thursday and again today. after her first round, 8 over par 78, not bad, she walked up to the microphone and stepped up on to a box and trading her golf club for her ice cream. >> it was a lot of fun.

i struggled today. it was great. >> and then there was the lesson she learned we could all use. >> i learned that you have to be patient. one shot at a time. >> and at just 11 many wonder what about the pressure of the crowds? she says she loves them. she has been golfing for more than half her life now saying she got serious at about is 7 while waiting for her brother to finish on the practice range. about the age thing -- >> what is it like to be asked for autographs by people older than you? >> it is awesome. >> and even though today she didn't play as well as she did yesterday, it was still enough to make history and for others to make way for her. after all of the high stakes swings, now it is back to being the daughter from california who says she likes to read sherlock holmes. her immediate plans? >> eat some more ice cream. >> is she not a delight? that is david muir reporting.
