good morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. it's 8:00 on sad, the first day of summer. let's start you off with a quick chuck of the forecast with meteorologist lisa ar jeb. >> the marine level is intact. it is shallow and will continue to dissipate but it will be backed up along the shoreline today. emeryville, you can see a bit of the low clouds. 55 in santa rosa. we do have a breeze in concord up to 23 miles an hour. 63 degrees for you right now. a few high clouds around today but with low 60s at the cost, the onshore flow keeping things

temp rate. temperatures are coming down a little bit from yesterday's reading. we'll talk about the second half of your weekend in just a few minutes. developing news out of berkeley where ten people are displaced follow an apartment fire. the fire broke out just before midnight at a building on martin luther king, jr. way. it took the fire crews an hour to put out the flame and the fires did $300,000 on damage. no word yet on what caused the fire. a five alarm fire that zoid several homes is out this morning. but the firefighters remained own the scene overnight. here's what the fire looked like at 5:00 p.m. yesterday. the front porch of a home on fire and a fire truck and a handful of firefighters trying to put it out. an hour later, another structure is destroyed by the fire. and as we zoom out, you see several fire trucks. by 7:00, you see the remnants of

the first house we showed you. all that remains is a pile of smoking charred rubble. >> wind gusts did not help a real problem for firefighters. the wind was moving 17 miles an hour to the west request gusts up to 25 miles an hour. it was also dry with just 22% relative humidity. one thing that did help the firefighters, water drop. a cal fire chopper kept swooping in with fire drop lets to help fan the flames. the fire spread very quick lip. abc 7 news reporter allen wong has more on how the homeowners didn't have much warning. >> it was hard because we don't really have much. >> reporter: it was supposed to be the home where evan and thornton were going to start their live together. >> we i grabbed my wedding dress and the dog and got out of there.

within minutes. and then the house is gone >> they lost everything but the wedding dress after a brush fire ignited along interstate 680. the winds were blowing at more than 20 miles an hour and embers were flying across the highway into the fields of core deal ya. >> at a rapid rate with this wind and vegetation, it was just like a flame thrower. >> reporter: within minutes they were dealing with a five-alarm fire. utility poles caught fire pulling down live wires in the neighborhood. and hector thought his home and dog were gone. when he arrived his home was there and mini the dog was waiting for him. >> i thought the dog was draped. i was worried for the dog. i'm happy, man, to see the dog. >> reporter: all lanes of interstate 680 were shut down for more than two hours during the friday rush hour. residents say fires along the highway are common but they had

never seen it spread this fast. allen wong, abc 7 news. >> fire investigators in san francisco has been tracking an arsonist who seems to be targeting construction sites in the south market area. according to construction crews at one development, one of the fires costs $30,000 in damage. our reporter has more from rin con plaza where another fire was set on thursday. >> crews quickly attacked the fire inside the structure. you can see a firefighter trying to pry open the hood of this car that was set ablaze. according to the resident here, an e-mail was sent out notifying tenants this was the second fire set this week. >> after the first fire the fire department came in and couldn't find the source of the fire, just saw smoke and that was it. the second one they saw a guy running 0 out of a parking garage after setting fire to a car and they're investigating the matter. >> reporter: this resident says building management may have pulled an image of a suspect

from surveillance cameras. other residents say the back-to-back fires are a concern. >> two days in a row it's kind of scary. >> knowing that there were other incidents that, you know, led um to these last two, i'm sure that's got a lot of people concerned. >> reporter: this is the latest in a series of fires that have been set at or near construction sites in this neighborhood. arson investigators with the san francisco police and fire departments are working together as a special joint task force. they want to catch whoever is setting these fires before anyone gets hurt. even getting out of this high-rise is now a concern. >> it's scary. of course we're on a really high level, so to get out of the building fast is kind of a scary moment for us, if the elevators aren't working. >> reporter: construction crews tell us they've increased security patrol and adding video cameras. two suspects are in custody and a third is on the run after an armed robbery in san

francisco. the robbery led to a police chase through the city which ended at ninth and mission streets when the suspect's vehicle slam into another car. three people in that car suffered minor injuries. police believe three to five armed suspects entered a nail salon at octavia and union streets and held up victims in a takeover tile robbery. no one was hurt at the salon. police are are searching for a man accuse odd f stabbing his ex-girlfriend and kidnapping the daughter. this man is considered armed and dangerous. they say he took the girl from their home on thursday and threatened to hurt himself and the girl. an amber alert was issued but he returned his daughter three hours later. he, though, is still on the lose. his ex-girlfriend has been released from the hospital. a company that owns a number of for-profit colleges says it may have to shut down. corinthian colleges claims a recent decision by the

department of education to delay the school's access to federal student aid means the school could run out of money. well the government says corinthian didn't provide document to regulators who were investigating claims that the schools falsified attendance records, jobs and placement data. coffee giant starbucks is raising its prices starting tuesday. on average, a drink will cost between 5 and 20 cents more and the cost of packaged coffee sold in grocery stores will increase by a dollar in late july. starbucks just the latest company to increase prices as the price of coffee increases around the world. starting today, drivers will not be allowed on a popular tourist attraction in san francisco. lumbard street will be closed for the next four weekends. the ban on cars will take place from noon until 6:00 p.m. on sads and sundays and also on july 4th. local traffic and taxis will be

allowed on lombard, as will the tax taxis. contra cost that county public health officials have confirmed the first human case of the years of the west nile virus. a man in his 60s had it but he's now out of the hospital and recovering. county officials also confirm that three dead crows found in oakley tested positive for west nile. it is typically spread by mosquitos and officials are stressing that it's important to protect yourself. >> there's evidence that people with 50 years or older as well as people with debee's the and hypertension may be more vulnerable. >> symptoms including fever, head ache and poddy ache. only 1% of people who are infested require hospitalization. it's good to avoid dusk and dawn because that's when the mo key tos are active.

stole america's heart that week will not play the weekend at the women's u.s. open. she did not make the cut. still, a huge achievement and she learned a lot this week. but as abc 7 anchor david mere reports, she also taught us a lot as well. >> reporter: she's the 11-year-old red white and blue this week, swinging her way into history. still wearing her braces, she came with her swing, her outfit, her caddy. hands on her hip and sending the message she's got this. she became the youngest player ever to qualify for the women's u.s. open. what she said about competing. >> i just want to go out there and have fun and play the best i can. and i really don't care about the outcome. i just want to have fun. >> reporter: and about dad who's been by his side. can your dad beat you? >> no. >> reporter: and after her first

yesterday the city looked at removing a few parking spaces to make more room for the buses. according to the mta, three parks spaces would be removed permanently. 30 other spots would be restricted at certain times. a public hearing on the issue got heated as the residents vow to fight the program. >> it looks extremely similar to what the status quo has been and that's a problem. >> this is a pilot and this is something we want to monitor as we go forward. if there are changes we have to make, we'll make them. >> tech buses currently have 220 stops in san francisco. the new plan would drop that number to 120. the mta board plans to vote in july. if approved, the pilot program will begin in august. with parking at a premium in much of the bay area, ear not shocked with prices here. but check this out. this sign posted in l.a. says one-minute parking. it's clearly a mistake. the picture who took the picture

posted it on a website where an l.a. city employee saw it and then tracked down the sign. a new sign is being made put it will read one hour parking. a record number of salmon have been making their way out to sea and it could be because of the doubt. according to our medial partner, the lack of winter rain may have kept the young salmon in the watershed where their survival chance is better. the fish born last year were in a holding pattern and didn't move downstream. water officials counted 20,000 in the marine watersheds this spring. the last high was 11,000 back in 2012. summer now today. so that's good news. but it doesn't necessarily mean heat. >> no. in fact it means typical bay area summertime. and you know what that means, we're looking at low clouds and fog. and with that the temperatures will be comfortable there. but yesterday it got warm

quickly and today red flag warning in western nevada where relative humidity will be between 5 and 10%. we had a strong northerly push and today more of the wind is coming off of the ocean and the northern gradient will be suppressed. we will look for the onshore push. so her's a look at santa cruz where it's already sunny. 56 in morgan hill, good morning, half moon bay, 54 for you, and the west winds will pick up today keeping san francisco in the 60s. san jose looking lovely this morning where temperatures are at about 60. we saw that. 63 out towards fairfield. and a south wind, over 20 miles an hour in concord. 60 for your. 58 in livermore, 55 in santa rosa. east bay hills, you see the fog

there. it is a shallow deck of low clouds and will be confined to the coast today. summer arrives at 5:51. we were into the 90s yesterday and today i think upper 80s should do it. the seasonal weather pattern takes us through the first full week of summer. here's why. low pressure is off to the east of us and high pressure offshore. and that alignment is what we get to allow the steady sea breeze and mother nature to keep things pretty temp rent around here. minor fluctuations around the early part of the week. then by wednesday looking like a strong system may visit us and bring the temperatures down. qualifying today in sonoma with warm temperatures, low 80s 3 clock. definitely bring the sun block and your patience. a lot of folk the out there for sure. san jose just around 80 degrees. tomorrow it's warmer in the

south bay for monday and tuesday and then slightly cooler with the incoming system on wednesday and thursday. the changes are not significant. santa clara 78, 78 in mill pea december and it will be coolary breezy here from south bay. 77 minute lo park, san francisco with that breeze, mid 60s and in the north bay look for 79 in petaluma, on the east bay, hayward, 74 in union city and you head inland even with the high clouds we'll manage low to mid 80s, maybe 89 in brentwood today. today and tomorrow looking identical but we'll get a little warmer inland come monday and tuesday. low clouds and fog will be more wide spread with a trough but it should wash out all together wednesday and thursday. we'll let you know how warm it's going to be in your community by keeping track of the bay area weather at twitter at live doppler 7 hd.

light northwest wind 6 miles an hour. you see a couple of high clouds around. a delta, 63 degrees, a little fog in half moon pay, concord has a breeze at 60 degrees. we'll look for temperatures to be slightly cooler. right now we're 24 hours away from yesterday's readings that were warmer. so we are looking at today that onshore flow kicking up and allowing for that sea breeze to keep the temperatures from getting too warm towards the coast and the bay. low 60s pacifica, ocean beach, half moon bay, 66 san francisco, around the bay look for low to mid 70s. pretty comfortable in oakland and berkeley. inland we'll be out of the 90s, mid and upper 80s. warming up. california fire officials have issued a blunt assessment of what kind of summer it's going to be. >> 2014 could turn out to be the worst fire season ever. >> cal fire has an extra $100

million in its budget and has hired 300 extra firefighters but they say that won't help if people in fire prone areas don't clear the bush around their homes and go the extra mile to guard against fire. >> ensure your roof is clean, ensure the gutters don't have pine needles and leaves in them. i guarantee i can find homes full of pine needles in their gutters. >> they're urging everyone to develop a ready set go plan. ready your home, set up an evacuation plan and go quickly if you're told to leave. california is in the third year of a devastating drought and farmers near brentwood are getting pretty bad news. they're getting far less water than they counted on. abc reporter laura anthony has details. >> as you can see, it's empty right now and it sounds like it might remain empty. >> reporter: this ten acre plot is all ready to plant for the

spring season but then the local irrigation system gave him a warning. >> i was advised that the plantings i planned to plant here i should not do due to the fact they're looking at having no water available to us. i intended to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers. >> reporter: now all he can do is wait, mostly the state water resources board to decide whether this district that supplies water to the plot will receive its allocation. right now the nearby canal is fool. but come july 1st, other growers in this area could be turned off completely. th he's been able to sustain his you pick operation by plans from the other water districts that likely won't see a cut from the state. from those he's able to offer his customers a nice array of

fruits and vegetables. but he still worries about the future of his family farm. >> i don't know how i'm going to finish out the year. i've got a fair amount of money all right invested in this particular property that if we do have no water on this property, it's certainly going to affect my bottom line to a pretty good extreme. >> the community of mountain house, west of tracy, is also 100% depend on the buy ron bethany district. the health and safety could would allow an exemption but there could be a complete ban on all outside watering. the state water board is expected to signal its intent as soon as next week. in mountain house, laura anthony abc 7 news. water conservation may become mandatory in much of the bay area very soon. people who get water were asked to cut back by 10% but that goal has not been met.

next week the san francisco pub luck utilities commission will update its consumption fugs and discuss the probability of mandatory water rationing. secretary of state john kerry is traveling today. 300 military advisers are being dispatched to assist the iraqi army. the militant group isis has produced a video hoping to recruit foreign fighters including american muslims. they've taken over much of iraq. meanwhile, demonstrators hold a rally calling for in new war on i rack. they're calling for the obama administration to focus on housing, education and jobs as opposed to another war. it gets under way at noon at powell and market streets in san francisco. a new report finds that the government has little evidence that treatment for post

traumatic stress disorder for veterans is effective. according to the "l.a. times" the government spent $3 billion on treatments in 2012 but neither the defense department or the va has consistently collected the data on how effective the treatments are. the report finds the va is still not meeting its own requirement of offering the therapies to every veteran in need. qualifying begins to morning at sonoma raceway for tomorrow's 350 nascar event. it always attracts quite a crowd and creates a traffic nightmare on highway 37. also, highway 121 if you're coming in from the north. abc 7 news reporter wayne freeman has the details. >> reporter: inside sonoma raceway, you're looking at nascar's first right turn of the year, literally.

the first day of summer. we will be slightly cooler today. we were well into the mid 90s yesterday due to a strong northerly gradient. that's backed pauf. the john shore push will be stronger today. that will bring a seasonal weather pattern for the first week of summer and into next week. the big changes are going to come on thursday. but first things first. we've got the high offshore allowing for the steady sea breeze throughout the day today. you know the drill. if you're headed to the beach, bring the jacket, probably won't need to sunscreen. we'll see a little bit of warming come monday and tuesday, then a trough drops down and that should cool us off by the end of the week. but across the state it is warm from 93 in sacramento, 99 in fresno, mid 90s in yosemite and we do have the high clouds across chico and the northern sierra from time to time today. if you want to go to the fair in

sonoma, it will be warm, into the mid 80s through 4:00 in the afternoon. but elsewhere we'll see the same, temperatures in the low 80s at the alameda county fair. another warm afternoon for you with 70s by 7:00 tonight. if you're has eded to oaklanding with should be a nice game for the game with mid 60s by about 1:00 as the red sox come to town. and of course sunny skies. around the bay, low 60s, 79 in san raphael, 86 in santa rosa, 80 san jose. so a little cooler than yesterday. look for 85 in morgan hills. so some of the warmer locations in the inland valleys and that will be the rule against again tomorrow. the drop in temperatures slightly on wednesday, thursday, should wash out that marine layer a little bit. but overall we'll keep the
